12 best ski bindings

Ski bindings are a crucial component of a skiing setup, connecting the skier's boots to the skis. They serve several essential functions in skiing, including safety, control, and performance. Here's what you need to know about ski bindings:

  1. Safety: Ski bindings are primarily designed to release the skier's boot from the ski in the event of a fall or sudden force, which helps prevent leg injuries, such as knee sprains or fractures. This release mechanism is known as the "DIN" (Deutsches Institut für Normung) setting, which can be adjusted based on the skier's weight, ability, and skiing style.

  2. Compatibility: Ski bindings need to be compatible with both the skier's boots and the skis. There are different types of bindings for alpine skiing, alpine touring (AT), and telemark skiing, each with specific compatibility requirements.

  3. Alpine Ski Bindings: These are the most common bindings and are used for downhill skiing on groomed slopes. They have a fixed heel piece and a toe piece that releases in the event of a fall or force. Alpine ski bindings are typically designed for maximum control and performance.

  4. Alpine Touring (AT) Bindings: AT bindings are designed for skiers who want to venture into backcountry terrain. They allow the heel to be released, facilitating uphill hiking and climbing.AT bindings can be locked down for downhill skiing.

  5. Telemark Bindings: Telemark skiing is characterized by a free-heel technique. Telemark bindings allow the heel to lift and descend while skiing, providing a fluid, knee-dropping motion. They are commonly used for backcountry and telemark-specific skiing.

  6. Binding Brakes: Most modern alpine ski bindings come with brakes that prevent the skis from sliding down the slope uncontrollably if they release from the boots. Brake width must match the width of the ski to function correctly.

  7. Adjustability: Many ski bindings are adjustable to accommodate different boot sizes. This feature can be useful for growing children or sharing skis among family and friends.

  8. Mounting: Ski bindings need to be properly mounted onto the skis, typically done by a certified technician. Proper mounting ensures the bindings release when needed and stay securely attached during skiing.

  9. Release Settings: DIN settings determine the amount of force required to release the boot from the binding. Skiers should consult a professional technician to set their bindings to the appropriate DIN setting based on factors like weight, skiing ability, and style.

  10. Maintenance: Ski bindings require regular maintenance and inspections to ensure they function correctly and release when needed. This includes checking for wear, rust, and adjusting release settings as necessary.

  11. Ski Binding Manufacturers: Various manufacturers produce ski bindings, including Marker, Salomon, Atomic, Rossignol, and Look, among others. Skiers often choose bindings based on personal preference, brand reputation, and compatibility with their boots and skis.

Choosing the right ski bindings is crucial for both safety and performance. Skiers should consult with a certified ski technician or instructor to determine the most suitable bindings for their skiing style and skill level. Properly maintained and adjusted bindings are essential for an enjoyable and safe skiing experience.

User questions & answers

Question: what set of brake widths do they come with
Answer: 92mm waist
Question: are these complete bindings, or heel only
Answer: The Bindings will come as a set. Both Toe and heel will be included and will have to be mounted in the skis, as they are not pre-mounted on rails.
Question: Are these children’s bindings? Do they come with the toes or are they just the heels
Answer: The picture you see shows only the back bindings. The order I received came as a complete set with both toe and heel mechanisms in the original box. I believe they can be used by children or adults as long as the weight requirements are followed (The weight of the person should be between something like 80 to 250 pounds, and the DIN settings are adjusted based on that - they go from 3 to 10). I'm an adult male about 190. The skis I mounted them to have an 80mm waist and the ski brakes cleared that distance correctly. I skied on them today for the first time and they worked very well. These are standard intermediate type bindings that mount directly to the ski. (My guess is that these bindings are what's known as NOS (New Old Stock). They are new, never used, but were probably manufactured maybe 5 or so years ago. The manufacturer might have produce too many, so the over-production sat in the manufacturer's warehouse for a year or two. Then they were sold at a discount to retailers, who over-bought and let some sit in their warehouses or on their shelves for a year or two. And now they are being sold off on Amazon. Just my guess).
Question: Can these bindings still be serviced today
Answer: Ski shops wont install due to legality's as they are too old. 8-10 years old.. Comes with heels only. Must be an expert installer and mount them yourself.

Answer: Well if your skis are 105 mm under foot then 100mm brake width aren’t gonna be wide enough. Your going to have to go to a 110mm brake width.
Question: Can these bindings support a 200 lb. man
Answer: I’d say yes.
Question: Would the ski brakes work on straight skies
Answer: They should. But make sure the width of the brakes exceed the width of the ski.
Question: do these come with mounting hardware
Answer: They come with mounting screws

Question: Tyrolia, can you supply a 130mm brake to fit this binding
