User questions & answers
Question: | Where are these openers made |
Answer: | Like the other person said, there are no markings on the opener that says the country its made in. But the packaging does say made in China. However, this opener works very well and I would still purchase it again even after knowing that its not really "Swiss" made. |
Question: | Does it work on oval shaped lids/cans |
Answer: | Yes, quite well on oval shapes, in fact . |
Question: | Does this have all the features of the Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid Lifter, but just with extra features (bottle openers)? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, it has the lid lifter, the bottle opener, and of course the safety can opener. It is heavy duty, not flimsy at all. I've been using mine for about a year with no problem. |
Question: | It specifically states "Dishwasher Safe" above; that's why I bought it. But the included instructions say to wash by hand. Which is it |
Answer: | Have not purchased, but here's some insight on being listed as dishwasher safe while the instructions say to hand wash. Many things for use in the kitchen are designed to be dishwasher safe, possibly due to there being many people who will put stuff in the dishwasher without considering if it's ok to do so. Dishwashers are not gentle. They very forcefully spray very hot water on everything, and during the wash prob of the cleaning cycle a gritty substance is mixed with the water to give it scouring power to essentially scrape off dried, struck on food. The top rack gets less power being further away from the water source, which is why some things are labeled as being top-track safe. Because of how dishwashers clean, manufactures will almost always recommend hand washing, as it is much gentler, even if their product is designed to be dishwasher safe. Also, hand washing will almost always lead to whatever needs washing listing longer than if you use a dishwasher. Silverware and other solid metal things that don't have some special coating (like Teflon or the seasoning of a cast iron skillet) and aren't mechanical are about the only things that you don't have to worry about damaging, aside from possible discoloration. |
Product description
Open your cans/tins with hygiene in mind courtesy of the Auto Safety LidLifter from Kuhn Rikon. Once attached via the automatic, ‘lock-on’ mechanism, the opener removes lids without any contact whatsoever with the contents of the can/tin. It also prevents the all-too-common problem of lids falling into the can/tin. The device is safe to use as well as being hygienic: it doesn’t actually cut the metal, which ensures that unwanted sharp edges do not remain on either the can/tin or the lid. After a full rotation around the lid - and a noticeable reduction in resistance - the can/tin is open (and no more turning is required). To complete the job, simply lift the lid from the can/tin using the mini-pliers/pincers.
- Designed for maximum hygiene and to prevent cross-contamination - opener never touches the food within cans/tins and lids won’t fall into the can/tin
- Automatically attaches via ‘lock-on’ technology that grips the lid (no need to clamp it on)
- Safer than traditional openers - device opens cans/tins without cutting the metal, which leaves no sharp edges on the rim or lid
- Lids are removed via mini-pliers/pincers once opened so no handling is required (see ‘Product description’ section below for instructions on how to use). Also includes a ring-pull opener
- Easy to clean (wipe with a damp cloth; don’t put in the dishwasher). Dimensions: 8 (L) x 2.5 (W) x 2. 75 (H) inches

Unlike conventional openers, the Safety LidLifter cuts into a can below the rim of the lid, so there are no sharp edges, the blade never touches the food, and the final turn of the crank doesn't inconveniently drop the lid into the can's contents. The turning mechanism works smoothly for both right- and left-handers, and the soft turning knob provides a comfortable grip. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this all metal gears |
Answer: | Yes, Wayne. The gears and cutter are Metal. The housing is made of Plastic. The actual cut occurs below the lip of the can creating a very safe cut instead of the more customary sharp tops we have all experienced. Kuhn Rikon products all have a 1 year warranty from the date of purchase and stand by their products. You should feel very safe about purchasing this as if you are unhappy with product, Kuhn Rikon will be happy to exchange or refund the cost. |
Question: | Does this open pop-top cans? The tuna I like now comes in such cans and I really don't like them--much harder to open |
Answer: | No it does not - I have been trying to find one that opens the Tuna Cans and cut the tops off the soda / beer cans with no luck. It is the best of the openers I have tried but not on the cans I wanted it to open. It may open some brands but not the tear off ones I have had. It did open a Goya bean tear open can. |
Question: | Will this work on any size can |
Answer: | It does work on any size can, however, based on my experience, I do not suggest that you use it on the largest can size. My can opener had been working fine for about 5 years. I do purchase large cans occasionally, and I noticed that the can opener would snap constantly when trying to open those large daddys. I now have to buy a new can opener because using it for the large ones affected its perfromance. So, my advice to you, and all out there, do not use it on the largest cans. |
Question: | Does this cut on the rounded edge of the rim lip or below the rim lip |
Answer: | It cuts just below the the rounded edge of the rim lip so that the entire top lifts off leaving no sharp edges to cut you and no metal shavings in the food. NOTE: It has a prying mechanism to lift the lid off, but as with other brands I have tried, sometimes it works beautifully and the lid comes right off easily, and sometimes you you gotta really work to get the lid off. But that's just the nature of this type of opener. This is the best one I've used; quality of build and function. Even when it frustrates, I still prefer it over metal shavings and the lid falling into the food. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it really work on screw tops? Even laeger ones like peanut butter size |
Answer: | No. While this is a fabulous can opener, I have found its other features to be of limited use. It will only loosen small caps like those used on soda (pop) bottles. Kuhn Rikon sells other products more suitable for your needs. |
Question: | Where is this made -- China |
Answer: | The Swiss family firm with its headquarters in Rikon has subsidiaries in Great Britain, Spain and the USA. An unmistakable Swissness also distinguishes the outstanding design of Kuhn Rikon products. The company has been running its own in-house design department since 2004. |
Question: | does it leave slivers of shavings from the can |
Answer: | This opener does not leave slivers of metal from opening a can. |
Question: | Is this heavy or bulky |
Answer: | That is more subjective than objective ; depends on you? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Am I the only one who doesn't know how to use this jar opener? I only make ugly scratch marks on the side of the lid (from the metal teeth). Help |
Answer: | You may have to let it sit on the counter top depending how bad . I've never found it to be emidiate. it should work . |
Question: | Would this open nail polish jars with their small pointed tops? My daughter lets hers rest not her sides, and so it's been a problem lately |
Answer: | It might; however, I think that it would require far more than one, soaking application. Two minutes alone would never do it, and instructions warm against extended submersion-time. Hence, I think it would require repeated applications, and that still might not be enough if it's stuck. |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | I think you can use it on rusty tools. I would think you need to soak the tools in it. I guess it depends on how bad the rust is. I think it's worth trying. |
Question: | Does it open really big jars or mainly small and medium size ones |
Answer: | I don't know, but it's pretty standard. |
