12 best bluegrass banjos
Bluegrass banjos are a type of banjo specifically designed for playing bluegrass music, a genre of American roots music that originated in the Appalachian region. These banjos have distinctive features and characteristics that make them well-suited for playing bluegrass music:
Construction: Bluegrass banjos typically have a resonator, which is a round, flat-back piece attached to the back of the banjo. This resonator enhances the banjo's volume and projection, making it better suited for playing in a band or ensemble setting where it needs to cut through other instruments.
Neck and Fingerboard: The neck of a bluegrass banjo is often long and slender, providing ease of playability and allowing for fast picking and intricate fingerpicking techniques. The fingerboard is usually made of hardwood, such as rosewood or maple, and is marked with frets to aid in precise note placement.
Tone Ring: Bluegrass banjos often feature a tone ring, which is a metal component that sits between the banjo head and the rim. The tone ring significantly influences the banjo's tone and resonance. Common types of tone rings used in bluegrass banjos include flathead and archtop designs.
Resonator Flange: The resonator of a bluegrass banjo is attached to the rim using a flange, which is a metal ring that secures the resonator in place. This construction contributes to the banjo's characteristic bright and loud sound.
Strings: Bluegrass banjos are typically strung with steel strings, which produce a crisp and bright tone. The most common tuning for bluegrass banjos is the open G tuning (gDGBD).
Bridge: The bridge of a bluegrass banjo is crucial for setting the banjo's intonation and tone. It's often adjustable to allow for precise tuning.
Scruggs-Style Playing: Bluegrass banjo is closely associated with the "Scruggs style" of playing, named after Earl Scruggs, a legendary banjo player. This style involves three-finger picking techniques that create the fast and distinctive rolling sound associated with bluegrass music.
Bluegrass banjos are essential instruments in bluegrass bands, providing the driving rhythm and lively melodies that define the genre. They are cherished for their bright and resonant tones and are a key component of the traditional bluegrass sound.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the tuner work for all string instruments |
Answer: | Unfortunately no, I only have the deck designed for 6 string guitars. |
Question: | How would you tune the smaller size banjo, also size wise would you say concert or tenor ukulele |
Answer: | Hi Jay - There isn't currently a deck designed specifically for bass guitars at the moment. This deck however can still be very useful to a bass player. For example all of the note cards, interval cards, key cards and theory cards will still apply. The only cards that might not apply well are the chord cards and the scale cards because it might be tricky for a bass player to visualize removing the last 2 strings. I hope that helps. |
Question: | Is there a left hand version available |
Answer: | Hey! This deck is intended for both left handed and right handed players, charts are written the same regardless of what your primary hand is. |
Question: | Can someone tell me why they suggest tuning to open c as opposed to open g |
Answer: | Can you please send me an email at [email protected] and I'll send you a copy of the pdf. |

A resonator back provides more projection of sound in the Goodtime 2. It's made here in the USA, at the Deering shop with the same tooling used to make the top of the line banjos. Greg Deering designed the Goodtime banjos because there were no low priced banjos of enough quality for people to actually learn on without difficulty or giving up. He remembers what it was like to want a good banjo and not be able to afford one, so his gift to others is the Goodtime banjo line.
