12 best inline water heater

An inline water heater, also known as a tankless or on-demand water heater, is a device used to heat water as it flows through a pipe or a heating element. Unlike traditional water heaters that store and continuously heat a large tank of water, inline water heaters heat water only when it is needed. This design offers several advantages:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Inline water heaters are more energy-efficient than traditional tank-based heaters because they don't continuously heat and reheat a large volume of water. They only heat water when you turn on the faucet or appliance, which can lead to significant energy savings.

  2. Endless Hot Water: Since inline water heaters heat water on demand, you won't run out of hot water during a long shower or when multiple appliances are in use simultaneously. This makes them ideal for households with high hot water demands.

  3. Space Savings: Tankless water heaters are compact and can be mounted on a wall, freeing up valuable floor space. This is especially useful in smaller homes or apartments.

  4. Longevity: Inline water heaters often have a longer lifespan than traditional water heaters because they don't suffer from the same wear and tear that comes from maintaining a tank of hot water.

  5. Temperature Control: Many inline water heaters come with precise temperature control options, allowing you to set the water temperature to your preferred level.

  6. Reduced Standby Heat Loss: Traditional water heaters can lose heat through the walls of the tank when not in use. Inline water heaters do not have this issue, further enhancing energy efficiency.

To install an inline water heater, a qualified plumber typically needs to connect it to the main water supply and gas or electrical source, depending on the type of heater. It's essential to choose the right size and type of inline water heater for your household's hot water needs.

Inline water heaters are commonly used in residential and commercial applications and can be found in various sizes and models, including electric and gas-powered versions. They are particularly popular in regions with high energy costs or where space is limited.

When considering an inline water heater, it's essential to factor in your hot water usage patterns, the unit's capacity, and the type of fuel source available to ensure that it meets your specific needs. Proper maintenance, such as descaling and cleaning, is also necessary to keep the unit functioning efficiently over time.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it necessary to connect an expansion tank to this heater (for safety purposes)? It states something to that effect in the user manual
Answer: The expansion tank for this heater is not required. Most people already have these installed in their homes but if not then it would be Ok without it as there is a pressure relief valve on top if something happened. GlobalTowne is an authorized Bosch distributor.
Question: would this be able to supply a shower
Answer: A standard flow shower head is around 2.5 gallons per minute. A low flow head is around 1.5 gallons per minute. The recovery rate for a 90 degree temperature rise is 6.8 gallons per hour! So even the 7.5 gallon unit would only provide 4 minutes of shower time before the temp dropped off dramatically. (even at the low flow rate..)
Question: Can be used "in-line with a large hot water source"? Would it help a large bathtub that runs out of hot water before it gets full from main tank
Answer: If your bathtub is bigger than your main heater tank, this unit isn't going to do much for you. It will add 2.5, 4, or 7 gallons to the capacity of your main tank, depending on which Bosch unit you buy. The 7 gallon unit requires a specially wired circuit. You will also get a little bit of lukewarm water that was in the line between your main heater and the Bosch unit. Unless your main tank is awfully small and your bathtub massive, the 4 gallon unit should work for you. Maybe a demand type thankless heater in your bathtub hot water feed would be a better choice, but be careful to size it properly for your desired flow rate and temperature rise. Also a tankless is likely to require special wiring.
Question: When this heater is connected to the hot water line, what happens with the cold water that was sitting in the pipes
Answer: When the tap is opened, the hot water in the unit flows out. The colder water that was sitting upstream of the unit, enters the unit to be heated. If the tap remains open, the newly heated water flows out, being replaced eventually, (depending on the distance to the main water heater), with the water from the main water heater. You will probably set the unit temperature to equal the main water heater temperature, if you want to keep a constant temperature, but other scenarios are possible.

Minimize Wait Time for Hot Water

Waiting for hot water at a sink located far from a primary heating source can be frustrating. Only having access to cold water from a sink is just not useful, and plumbing a hot water line to every sink in a home or business requires time and money. To get hot water where it’s needed, when it’s needed, a better solution is to use the Tronic 3000 T from Bosch: a point-of-use electric mini-tank heater. This heater can supplement a primary water heating source, or be used under a single sink. In fact, the Bosch Tronic 3000 T can be used for three different applications: as a sole water heating source for a single sink, as a supplement to an existing heater located far from the sink, and as a buffer installed in-line with tankless water heaters that experience intermittent cold water, also known as 'cold water sandwiching'. No matter the configuration, there’s minimal stand-by loss from this premium mini-tank water heater.

Product description

This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 67°F and above. This model is well suited for heating up to 2-Gallon per minute, which is the equivalent of one shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 67°F and an output setting of 105°F. Digital Temperature Control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1 Degree. This model can also be used in colder climates as a Point of Use for a sink or other low flow application. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. When sized properly this water heater will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 11 requires a minimum 125 amp electrical panel for installation with 60 amp double pole breaker connected to set of #6 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 1/2" compression fitting with the option of 1/2" NPT adapter included. For additional assistance please feel free to contact our support center at 877-474-6473.

User questions & answers

Question: Ours has only been in service for less than a year - will not adjust temperature to anything above 85 Deg. F. What do you think is the problem ? kds
Answer: My only guess is that the rheostat (variable resistor) that the temperature adjustment knob is attached to may be faulty. If that isn't it then I don't know. Sorry.
Question: The warrenty says that this unit must be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, for them to honor the "life time warrenty." why
Answer: Hello Bob, The reason is the same as why an innumerable number of gadgets around the world have that little "warranty void if removed" label. Because getting inside of one requires a certain level of training and expertise. Same with this unit. GadgetsGo is an authorized Ecosmart dealer. Kind regards,HenryGadgetsGo
Question: My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion
Answer: Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met.
Question: what amp breaker is required
Answer: The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. 

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water

Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.

Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.

Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used to keep a low temp of 80°F on an indoor fish pond
Answer: No, This could not be used for this type of use.
Question: Is the temperature adjustable to 104 degrees F
Answer: There is no adjustment -the heater is automatically "on" when the water is being circulated. Works very well in keeping the water temperature about right. If water temp gets too high for comfort-not our experience- you can just shut off the circulating pump.
Question: Does anyone know why the tub pump and this heater have to be on seperate 15A circuits (as opposed to one 30A GFCI circuit) for both
Answer: Most wiring in a home or outlet is rated for 15-20 amps. So is your wiring. You can add a sub panel box and have 15A and 15A, upsizing your wiring to said box along with bigger breaker 30-40amp breaker. High load circuits require their own dedicated breaker, so if it uses more Amps than the product is rated the breaker turns off preventing any property damage or worse, a fire. It is best to call a licensed electrician, just because you upsize your breaker does not mean the wiring is meant for a bigger load.
Question: Can I use this one for my whirlpool tub american standard model
Answer: Yes. This is exactly the same as the EZ-Heater which costs $200. This is the OEM version and will fit in the blank coupling that is in the American Standard whirlpool tubs.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the recovery time if the 7 gallons of hot water is used
Answer: I have the 4 gallon tank and it is not too bad for the reheat
Question: Can I reduce the pipe's size from 3/4 in to 1/2 in without any negative effect on the unit
Answer: No harm to unit.....Max water flow will be reduced a little.
Question: Can i use this to replace a small rv hot water heater
Answer: Yes, but realize that it's electric and draws quite a few amps, most rv water heaters are propane.
Question: The Manual request for the ES8 a 20 Amp breaker and 12GA wire. The wattage however is 1440 with 12 Amps. Why then 20 Amp breaker and not
Answer: I would use a 20 amp circuit with 12 ga wire but there are no inrush concerns with a resistive load. A heating element does not have a higher initial current draw like a motor. It draws 1440 watts or 12 amps at 120v. Since 14 ga wire must be fused for 15 amps, this device by itself is already at 80% of the circuit’s capacity.

3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Water System AP430SS, Helps Prevent Scale Build Up On Hot Water Heaters and Boilers

3M Aqua-Pure

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The 3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Water System AP430SS is designed to help reduce scale build-up and corrosion - thereby helping to extend the life on hot water-using appliances such as water heaters (standard (gas or electric) and tank-less), boilers, clothes washers and dishwashing machines, and on plumbing fixtures like faucets, pipes, and shower heads. The AP430SS provides a flow of up to 10 GPM with ¾” NPT inlet/outlet connections. Scale is calcium and magnesium deposits that often form when hard water is heated. Water hardness is responsible for most scale formation in pipes, water heaters, finishes and flat surfaces, and other water using appliances. Over time scale build-up can significantly shorten the life of any water-using appliance. Also scale buildup inside pipes causes loss of water pressure as the interior gets smaller and smaller over time. The AP430SS contains polyphosphates to bind calcium and magnesium hardness minerals, helping to prevent them from precipitating out (or becoming a solid) and building up on metallic surfaces. Polyphosphates also helps prevent corrosion by forming a thin protective layer on the metal surface. The 3M Scale Inhibition Water System AP430SS is tested by NSF International to NSF/ANSI Std. 42 for material and structural requirements only. The overall single vessel/cartridge design of the AP430SS makes the 3M Aqua-Pure AP431 Water Filter Cartridge change-out easy for professionals as well as end users. Change disposable filter cartridge every 6 months or sooner if you observe noticeable reduction in water flow rate. The AP430SS is to be installed on the cold water supply line of the water heater or at point-of-entry of water into the home. Tools and parts required (not included): one ¾” stop and waste valve (compression type), PTFE tape, two ¾” male x ¾” street adapters, one ¾” compression gate valve, and pipe cutter. Read all instructions carefully before attempting to start installation. The existing shut-off valve remains in place and still acts as the cold water shut-off. This filter system has 3/4” connections. The AP430SS can be adapted to various pipe sizes by using reducing adapter on either end. Installation fittings can be sweated or threaded. Use galvanized fittings for installation of galvanized pipe. Aquapure by Cuno hot water system protector to reduce scale build up in pipes and extend life of water heater. Installs on cold water side of hot water system to inhibit scaling and corrosion.

User questions & answers

Question: Just received. It appears a lot of water bypasses the filter, can someone confirm this is not the case? Mine is just like customer uploaded photo
Answer: Not a filter, a water treatment cartridge. Rated at 10gpm by the manufacture, a small amount of the water flow is diverted down into the cartridge through a single hole in the elevated tab, in the center of the tee. The polyphosate is slowly dissolved and a small amount of treated water flows back up and out 3 small holes around the elevated tab. According to the manufacture it only takes 2-3 parts per million to treat for scale. A little bit will do ya.
Question: Does this help with water spots on glasses and scaling on bathroom fixtures
Answer: We have a lot of calcium in our well water. The heat from the hot water tank is what causes the minerals to form scale. We placed this on the cold water side of the hot water tank and noticed a big improvement in water quality, especially on shower doors and dish washer. I have changed it twice now. The first time at 3 mos because the info says it can clean up existing scale in pipes and fixtures. The bottom line is if your water is very hard that will affect how much benefit you get from this product. So will you be happy with a 50% improvement in quality? I know I am cleaning faucet screens a lot less. Still have a jug of vinegar around though! Hope this helps.
Question: GPM seems to low. I have 2 Tankless units, EACH one does 9 GPM
Answer: we have an electric tank less that is rated at 4.5 GPM. We have very hard water in this part of MA and also have a well. We have been in this house for 30 years and have had problems with pipes rotting away. When we installed the electric tank less we installed this filter also. We used the heater for a few months and than had the plumber perform the maintenance suggested by the tank less mfg. It was clean as a whistle. Our flow rate is not as high as yours but if you had one in line with each heater - i would think it would work fine. Our heater used 120A for 4.5 GPM - if yours is electric it most use a lot of power! For our use I am very satisfied with the filter and given our water quality situation and how clean the heater was - i would highly recommend this filter.KR in MA
Question: Can this system be installed with the filter in the horizontal position (copper pipe is running vertically
Answer: In my opinion, if this is collecting any particles before getting into Tankless water heater, the particle should fall in vertical direction so filter should be installed in vertical direction. I installed my filter in vertical direction before cold water is getting in to the tankless. In order to get a right answer, it would be the manufacture because they are the one who designs the filter.

Based on 3 reviews Check latest price

Product description

This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 62°F and above. The ECO 18 is capable of heating over 2.5 gallons per minute, which is the equivalent of one water saver shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 62°F, and an output setting of 105° F. Two showers emitting no more than 1.5 gpm each can be run simultaneously when incoming water temperature is above 70° F. Digital temperature control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1°. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. However, when sized properly it will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 18 requires a minimum 150 amp electrical panel for installation with 40 amp double pole breakers connected to sets of #8 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 3/4" NPT. For additional assistance please feel free to contact our support center at 877-474-6473.

User questions & answers

Question: How do know which size to buy? We will supply two bathrooms, dish washer, clothes washer. What size should I choose
Answer: I noted someone below stating they got the largest one and they can only run one water source at a time. My guess is they installed it wrong by not getting the electric hooked up right, or maybe the unit was just defective, or they live in Alaska. I went under size with an Eco 27 a few years ago because that’s all my electric panel could handle. We have zero issues in the summer. During winter months we can only run one shower at a time and have to slowly fill a tub (maybe 3/4 fill speed). To save as much money as I am on electric bill and have unlimited shower lengths (only 1 person at a time mid-Dec to mid-March) is totally worth it. On here today because I’m thinking of upping my panel size so was thinking of going with a larger one now. Regardless, CCRC’s experience with the largest unit not working is nothing like the experience I’ve had, and again I intentionally undersized mine for the house. The website has a clear chart to explain size you need based on number of water fixtures in your home and ground water temperature.
Question: Can this unit supply a 3,700 sq foot home with 3 1/2 baths
Answer: In the lower states it can, but in the northern states, multiple simultaneous users, it will be overloaded. If you can afford a 3,700 square foot home, then you can place a unit in each appropriate demand zone and be very glad you did. I love mine, live in KY, get great supply when the water is above 60 degrees, and then it slows the flow as the temperature drops. I have dishwasher, washing machine, garden tube, 2 showers, 3 sinks and 4 people. It is better than great in the summer, okay spring and fall, and we are conservative in the winter.
Question: What is the power consumption of this tank-less heater
Answer: The instantaneous power consumption while the hot water is running is quite high (up to 18kW or 27kW depending on which model you’re looking at on this page). However, when no hot water is being used, the power consumption is 0 (or a minuscule amount to run an LED light or something). The total power consumption over the course of several days or longer should be much lower than a tank heater but the short term power usage while the heater is making hot water will be much higher than a tank heater. It’s just that the unit sits idle most of the time while a tank heater will use power fairly frequently even when no hot water is needed as the water in the tank cools off over time and needs to be re-heater fairly constantly
Question: remote
Answer: This unit does not have the ability to have a remote temperature control.

Stiebel Eltron Tankless Heater – Tempra 12 Plus – Electric, On Demand Hot Water, Eco, White

Stiebel Eltron

Based on 616 reviews Check latest price

Product description

"The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 12 Plus Tankless Water Heater features exclusive Advanced Flow Control German patented technology invented by Stiebel Eltron to automatically maintain water temperature for constant comfort. It’ll reduce flow slightly if hot water demand exceeds capacity to ensure that hot showers will never be interrupted. Tempra 12 Plus will typically use 15-20% less energy compared to conventional electric tank water heaters. Although, it’s possible to save significantly more energy depending on personal home usage habits. The difference is that conventional tank water heaters continually store hot water, and as a result, lose 15%-20% of the total energy consumed to the environment around them. This is called standby heat loss. Tank water heaters that use gas or oil are even less efficient, because they also lose heat through their vents to the outdoors. Our tankless water heaters do not need venting, and will not store hot water, waiting for you to use it. They operate on-demand to provide continuous and endless hot water when you need it, and not waste energy when you don’t. CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDE - ANSI/UL Std. 499, CSA Std. C22.2 No. 88, ISO 9001, WQA tested & certified against NSF/ANSI 372 for lead free compliance. User questions & answers

Question: Can the flow rate be adjusted up from 0.5gpm to say 1gpm or 1.5gpm (understood that the output water will be corresponding less hotter)? thanks in adv
Answer: This is a 199,000 btu model, a 3/4" gas line is required to have sufficient gas supply.
Question: degree water going in what degree will be at the tap
Answer: rinnai recommends the GTK03 Grundfos kit for this unit
Question: are any of these tankless water heaters plug in
Answer: I think, you need buy a WiFi module, call Rennai and ask. Circ-logic did not work for me, I had to install re circulation pipe. Because of the high minimum flow requirements, this unit did not work with any regular re circulation pump, so wasted money buying a Watts pump. And paid double for the labor. Rennai told me that I should have bought their thankless heater with re-circulation built in.
Question: Would you recommend this model for a shower in a guest bathroom
Answer: IT CAME WITH ADAPTERS ON THE TOP. NO PIPING.

3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Replacement Water Cartridge AP431, For Aqua-Pure System AP430SS, Helps Prevent Scale Buildup On Hot Water Heaters, Boilers, Plumbing Pipes and Fixtures

3M Aqua-Pure

Based on 838 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The 3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Replacement Water Filter AP431 is designed for use with 3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Replacement Water System AP430SS. The system is designed to help reduce scale buildup and corrosion - thereby helping to extend the life on hot water-using appliances such as water heaters (standard (gas or electric) and tank-less), boilers, clothes washers and dishwashing machines, and plumbing fixtures like faucets, pipes, and shower heads. Scale is calcium and magnesium deposits that often form when hard water is heated. Water hardness is responsible for most scale formation in pipes, water heaters, finishes and flat surfaces, and other water using appliances. Over time scale buildup can significantly shorten the life of any water-using appliances. Also scale buildup inside pipes causes loss of water pressure and reduced flow as the interior gets smaller and smaller over time. The AP431 replacement water filter contains polyphosphates that bind dissolved calcium and magnesium hardness minerals, helping to prevent them from precipitating out (or becoming a solid) and building up on metallic surfaces. Polyphosphates also help prevent corrosion by forming a thin protective layer on the metal surface. Cartridge change-out is easy for professionals as well as end users. Change disposable filter cartridge every 6 months or sooner if you observe noticeable reduction in water flow rate.

  • DESIGNED FOR USE WITH 3M Aqua-Pure Whole House Scale Inhibition Inline Water System AP430SS
  • HELPS PROTECT HOT WATER HEATERS: Polyphosphates, included in this product, help to inhibit scale buildup in hot water heaters (both standard (gas or electric) and tank-less styles) and boilers. Helps extend the life of hot water heaters and hot water using appliances, pipes, and downstream plumbing fixtures such as faucets and shower heads.
  • MAINTAINS EFFICIENCY: By inhibiting scale buildup on heat elements, helps maintain water heater efficiency.
  • EASY TO REPLACE: Easy change-out makes system maintenance easy.
  • HIGH FLOW RATES: Rated for up to 10 gallons per minute (gpm).
  • PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS: System has a pressure range of 25-125 PSI (862 kPa) and operating temperature of 40-100F (4.4-37.8C).

User questions & answers

Question: Is the active ingredient polyphosphate? Can I use this to protect against corrosion within the copper pipes
Answer: This heater is manufactured in China
Question: What is the thread size at the top of the filter
Answer: when its on the highest level from one to ten and ten being the highest its a seven.
Question: How do you know when to change out the filter? Is there a gauage on the filter to show you when it is full of dirt
Answer: Yes, this heater has a built in thermostat that will adjust the heat output and electrical use as the room temperature changes. It never shuts off completely, which eliminates the hot/cold cycling effect created by most portable electric heaters. . Unlike most portable electric heaters that have the temperature sensor inside the heater, the BDISC6 has an external temperature sensor that more accurately senses the room temperature and adjusts the heat output accordingly. .
Question: Can I used this with a spa steam generator? Or do I need a sediment filter. Don't know what the difference is. If you can help please respond
Answer: Thank you for your question. This unit will range from 5 amps min to 12.5 amps max. If set on auto this unit will cycle on/off according to temp set at. If you would like please call 1-800-776-9425 for our tech department to do trouble shooting.
