I believe they a carbon fiber composite. Mine are around 15 years old. The cases are protective but require some maintenance on the zippers in Salt environments. I have used them extensively from Maine to Aruba. I recommend you explore the manufacture websites when getting detailed info on equipment. On the specific rod you list, I have taken Cod, amberjack, Sailfish, Mahi, Wahoo and Baracuda on it. I also have the spinning version too. No problems or issues with the rods at all.
