Answer:	My son is also 9 and wore between a youth small and a youth medium (he is small for his age). I opted for the youth small because he is smaller but also because he was wearing it under a football jersey. His jersey was really fitted (snug). I think you want it a little more fitted so the pads don’t move around too much.

Answer:	My son just turned 10 and is average build we bought him a youth large. He wears it for every game and has not complained one time. I think you should go with a youth large it’s tight enough to not bother and roomy enough for growth

Answer:	The long sleeve version does have elbow protection. That's what I got my son. The short sleeve, obviously, does not. The shirt is identical otherwise so they must just have one description up.
