KMC is a well-known manufacturer of bicycle chains and related accessories, and their pliers are designed to assist cyclists in various chain-related tasks. Here's what you need to know about KMC pliers:
Chain Link Removal: KMC pliers are primarily used for the removal of chain links. They are designed to make the process of breaking and rejoining bicycle chains more straightforward. This can be especially useful when you need to shorten or lengthen a chain to fit a different gear configuration or replace a damaged link.
Compatibility: KMC pliers are typically designed to work with KMC chains specifically, but they may also be compatible with chains from other manufacturers. It's essential to check the product specifications to ensure compatibility with your specific chain.
Precision and Ease of Use: These pliers are engineered for precision and ease of use. They often feature ergonomic handles for a comfortable grip and precise control when handling the chain.
Durability: KMC typically produces high-quality tools and accessories for cyclists, so their pliers are designed to be durable and withstand regular use. They are made from sturdy materials to ensure longevity.
Versatility: While chain link removal is their primary function, some KMC pliers may include additional features or functions, such as built-in chain hooks for easy installation and removal of master links or quick links commonly used in modern bicycle chains.
Maintenance Tool: KMC pliers are a valuable tool for cyclists who perform their bicycle maintenance, whether it's for routine cleaning, chain replacement, or adjusting the chain length to accommodate different gear setups.
Compact and Portable: These pliers are usually compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry in a tool bag or bike repair kit for on-the-go maintenance or repairs during rides.
When working with bicycle chains, having the right tools like KMC pliers can make the job more efficient and less frustrating. However, it's essential to ensure that the pliers you choose are compatible with your specific chain type, as different chains may have variations in link design and size.Always follow proper safety procedures and guidelines when working on your bicycle's drivetrain components.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this tool just for removing the chain or can you use it to install a chain too |

Question: | Wouldn't a pair of needle nose pliers perform the same function |
Answer: | I tried needle nose pliers and id did not work for me (they kept slipping). The KMC opener worked like a charm and instantly released the link. |
Question: | How wide does it open |
Answer: | It sits open. It is wide enough to fit in one chain link. When the handle is depressed, the jaw closes and releases the missing link. |
Question: | I use a SRAM chain with a PowerLock master link. Would this tool work for non-KMC chains |

User questions & answers
Question: | How it is different from park tool mlp- 1.2 chain plier? or both are same |
Answer: | You need to see the head of the pliers. They are shaped differently. The version with curved edges on both sides can be used for removing or installing the master link. |
Question: | If one already owns a chain tool, is this also necessary? Thanks |
Answer: | Only if your chain uses missing ling links kinda like what's listed below assuming the link works. If it doesn't just search "bicycle chain missing link"http://smile.amazon.com/KMC-MISSING-Bicycle-8-Speed-6-Pack/dp/B001AYJF3S/ref=smi_www_rcolv2_go_smi?_encoding=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 |
Question: | Is this the newer 1.2 version that opens and closes or the older 1 version that only opens links |
Answer: | This is the MLP-1.2 No tool is required to assemble a quick link/powerlink. |
Question: | It opens the links fine, but can't get it to close them, is their a trick |
Answer: | No trick that I could see. Just put the outside of the jaws in the links and open the handles until you hear a click. I think they are great! So much easier than trying to pull the chain to get it to click into place. There are two versions of these pliers. One does not have the correct shape on the outside of the claws to set the master link. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried these with the sram quick links? i see a one star review saying he/she broke them and if any links will it is sram |
Answer: | I haven't, but SRAM quick links don't require a tool. You squeeze the sides together and pull the link apart. Trying to use the tool without pressing the sides in could very well break the tool. |
Question: | Does this tool work to break a Shimano Deore 12 speed chain |
Answer: | This tool doesn't "break" chains. It opens quick links. Conex makes quick links that don't require a tool. There is another company that makes one of these tools that nests and holds a spare quick link. I hope this helps. |
Question: | Does it work with 12 speed eagle |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on 12 speed drivetrains |
Answer: | I don't see why it would not. Chains from 9 speed and up are (at lease for Shimano) the same width of the inner, what changes is the width of the links. This tool only touches the inner part (the round cylinder that touches the gears). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a 2x10 set up |
Answer: | Yes it will....although it may depend on your type of cassette and crankset, whether it requires a directional chain since the KMC is non-directional....there was a faint "crunch" on my shimano 2x10 set up...that "crunch" went away when i switched to the shimano HGX chain which is a directional chain...otherwise it is designed for the 2x10 set up |
Question: | Wanting to know this'll work with the Shimano Ultegra 6700 10 speed cassette |
Answer: | Yes, it works fine on mine. I run an Ultegra 12-25 cassette and ultegra shifters and have no problem. I like this chain better than SRAM or the shimano chain. |
Question: | Does it work with Campagnolo cassettes |
Answer: | Works well with my Campy Chorus and Record cassettes. These shift perfectly and have a long lifespan. |
Question: | Does this come with a master link |
Answer: | The KMC X10.93 does indeed come with a master link. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Dumb question! How the heck to I resize the links? Can this be done by hand or do I need a chain tool thingy |
Answer: | Yes, you need a chain break tool to shorten chain. I nailed two finishing nails a few inches apart to a 2x4 in my garage ceiling. Then I hang the new and old chains beside each other to eyeball the length required. But you still must count the links since the old chain has typically stretched compared to the new chain. You then break the new chain then install. |
Question: | Does this chain work with a 2x9 drive train? Shimano deore xt specifically |
Answer: | Recently I changed my bike's drive train from 3x9 to 2x9. I only removed 3 links to have a better fitting. |
Question: | What is difference between X9.93 and X9.99 ? Are all bicycle chain the same in size, width and gap |
Answer: | The 9.99 is all silver, the 9.93 is sliver/black. Both work the same the 9.99 will last a little longer in a wet climate (less rust). They are both good working 9 speed chains. |
Question: | Is a master link included |
Answer: | Yes. KMC Missing Link is included. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is thia a hollow pin chain |
Answer: | NO ! This is a solid pin chain. I just checked both of my bikes. Good , inexpensive chain for heavy use and heavy people. I run 217 to 222 lb. of muscle and I get about 2 years of hills with this chain on my commuting bike (12 miles each way, 2-3 times a week) much of it on dirt road and rail trail so lots of grit. Speaking for Freddie Mercury, "Get on your bikes and RIDE !" Have fun. |

Question: | Can anyone explain why these might wear out simply by connecting and disconnecting them 2 or 3 times. Why would this cause any significant wear |
Answer: | I think they are just covering their butt. I've disconnected them on several occasions with the correct tool and had no problems with reuse. Good luck. |
Question: | will this product work with a Electra Townie 7D bike |
Answer: | If your chain measures 1/2x 3/32 inch it will will work. |
Question: | Will this work with the kmc narrow z-72 7-8spd? the reason i ask is that this chain appears to be more narrow then other chains |
Answer: | Yes, this will work, the chain is a ½ x 3/32, as long as the chain has those measurements which all 5,6,7 and 8-speed chains have, so you should have no issues. |
Question: | Will these work with SRAM 8 speed chains |

Question: | I've never changed a bike chain before. My bike has 56 links. Does this chain also have 56 links - is this the standard number of links in a chain |
Answer: | I'm guessing you have 112 links. chains are sold long and have to be cut to size with a chain tool. this chain is 116 links, so it will work for you so long as you can get your hands on a chain tool. |
Question: | can you still use a regular chain tool to get the correct length or does it use a special chain tool |
Answer: | Regular chain tool worked for me. Was a bit more effort needed to get the pin started through. After it started to move, was no problem. |
Question: | Can i used for MTB |
Answer: | This is designed for road, but I would think if your bike is only 10 speed cassette in the rear, you would be ok. I would look for something designed specifically for mtb, and the gearing of the cassette. |
Question: | Is this chain directional |
Answer: | No. It's not directional. |

Question: | How many links |
Answer: | Dear valued Amazon Customer, This chain has 116 links. If you have additional questions about the KMC X10SL 10- Speed Chain- call us at 1-877-BIKEAID (245-3243) and we would be pleased to assist. Thanks and best! |
Question: | Does this come with the missing link, no tool chain break link |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with a missing link but you will still likely need a chain tool to shorten the chain to the proper length. You could put the chain on as is with the missing link but it would likely be too long. |
Question: | Will this work on a fat bike with 2x10 shramx7 derailer |
Answer: | You should have no problem with a 2x10 setup. Sram or Shimano will be fine. |
Question: | I need 118 links total. Is this 114 + 2 links or 116 +2 links. If it is only 116 total can I use 2 master links |
Answer: | buy the KMC Missing links...however you will need to get 2 regular links from another chain... the (KMC missing links) simply replace the male part of regular chain links and therefor offer no extension arrangement on their own....however they will serve a coupler for the addition regular chain links in your application.....in my opinion this works better than using chain pins |
