13 best bar and chain oils
Bar and chain oils are essential lubricants used in chainsaws to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the cutting chain and bar. Here's what you should know about them:
Purpose: Bar and chain oil is designed to reduce friction and heat generated during the cutting process. It provides essential lubrication to the chainsaw's cutting chain and the guide bar, preventing premature wear and prolonging their lifespan.
Viscosity: These oils are typically thicker and more viscous than regular motor oil.The higher viscosity helps the oil adhere to the chain and bar, even at high chain speeds.
Adhesion: Bar and chain oils are formulated to stick to the chain and bar, even when the chainsaw is in use. This adherence ensures that the chain remains lubricated throughout the cutting process.
Minimizing Wear: The primary function of these oils is to minimize friction between the chain and the bar, which, in turn, reduces heat generation and wear on both components. This helps maintain cutting performance and safety.
Cooling: In addition to reducing friction, bar and chain oil also helps in cooling the chain and bar. Chainsaw operation generates heat, and the oil aids in dissipating this heat, preventing overheating and potential damage.
Environmental Considerations: There are different types of bar and chain oils available, including mineral-based, synthetic, and biodegradable options. Some users prefer biodegradable oils to reduce their environmental impact, especially when cutting in environmentally sensitive areas.
Winter and Summer Oils: Some manufacturers offer specific bar and chain oils formulated for use in different temperature conditions. Winter oils are more fluid and suitable for colder climates, while summer oils are thicker to handle higher temperatures.
Chain Lubrication Systems: Many modern chainsaws have automatic chain lubrication systems that deliver oil to the chain and bar as needed, ensuring continuous lubrication during operation. These systems help conserve oil and reduce waste.
Reservoir Capacity: Chainsaws have an oil reservoir for holding the bar and chain oil. Users should regularly check the oil level and refill it as needed to ensure proper lubrication.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of the chainsaw's lubrication system is crucial. This includes cleaning the oil delivery channels, replacing oil filters if applicable, and using the recommended type of oil for your chainsaw model.
Safety: Using the right bar and chain oil is essential for safety. Insufficient lubrication can lead to overheating and potential chain derailment, posing a safety risk to the operator.
Compatibility: It's essential to use a bar and chain oil that is compatible with your specific chainsaw model. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure you're using the right type of oil.
Bar and chain oils are an integral part of maintaining and operating a chainsaw efficiently and safely. Regularly checking the oil level, using the correct type of oil, and keeping the lubrication system in good condition are essential practices for chainsaw users.

Question: | Can this Oil used for Stihl brand chainsaw machine |
Answer: | The best way I found to light these is to have a small pair of metal rings and pick up and hold the coal cavity side up and light the bottoms of it and then place them on your burner. Then you can place your incense, herbs, or oils while the heat is still on the bottom of the coal(but it does not take long to get hot!) |

Question: | Is it 200 ml |
Answer: | It is about 4.5 feet long (54") 20 " deep. 34" to grill surface. 46" high at top of grill cover. To me it seams small for a 4 burner. The grill surface is only 24" X 16". |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this oil transparent when new or black? Some other bar and chain oils I've bought are black. does it make a difference |
Answer: | It is dark, but not quite black. It works well and as intended, so I don't think the color matters much, if at all. |
Question: | How long does the oil stay or keep after purchase |
Answer: | It is like any other oil. There is no 'shelf life'. I will say this - we live in a remote area of Montana and buy our fire wood by the logging truck-full. We have a Stihl Chain Saw with a 32 inch bar and cut 8 to 10 cords of wood a season. We use this chain oil every year and it not only lubricates, it seems to help the chain to stay sharper longer. It has been awhile since we bought the quart size - we buy it by the gallon now. 'Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is 6 oz ok for my 80cc bike I have a 1 gal tank and I need 20:1 for after breaking in and 16:1 for breaking in need a response fast I need oil |
Answer: | you can make the mix what ever you want just read the mix instructions |
Question: | I have never used this before. Do i need to buy anything else for my trimmer |
Answer: | I assume you have a 2 cycle trimmer. Read the manual on the correct oil/gas mixture. Most American built trimmers use a 40:1 or 50:1 mixture. 40:1 is 2.6 oz. per gallon. A little less oil if 50:1. Chinese 2 cycle motors still use 25:1 or 20:1 oil mixture. Use 5.1 oz. of oil per gallon of gas for 25:1 or a little more if 20:1 mixture. |
Question: | How many gallons will this treat if one whole 16 oz bottle is used |
Answer: | I use 50:1. That takes 2 oz per gallon so I get 8 gallons per bottle. It is great having the squeeze section so you can precisely measure before filling gas can. |
Question: | What size (oz) is the measure cup on top? Say I neeeded 3.2 oz |
Answer: | It has numerous markings including 32 to 1 or 3.2 oz there is a graduated scale on the side, loosen the cap and squeeze gently until the desired amount is reached. Should you decide to go with this, I used a sharpie to highlight the markings to make then easier to read |

User questions & answers
Question: | If it burns up my bar and chain with the 3 yr warranty will they buy me a new bar and chain |
Answer: | Yes. That is its purpose. |
Question: | Does It Contain Butter |
Answer: | It is NOT just 30-weight motor oil. It has a tacky additive to make it stick to the chain rather than flinging off. Motor oil is NOT an interchangeable product for this purpose. One oddity: it IS good for lubing antique spinning wheels, or anything else where the prospect of oil flinging off is present. This would, I think, make it very good for bike chains in that regard, though I am uncertain that it lubricates as well as a use-specific product might. Maybe stir in a little molybdenum disulphide or graphite? |
Question: | Is this acceptable in place of 54-026, whats the difference if any? use a small li battery saw (b&d lcs |
Answer: | Yes certainly. I use it on my Stihl Wood Boss all the time. The oil is just put onto the chain to keep it cool and running smoothly. No special oil is required. I would recommend that you use Stihl brand oil to mix with the gas however. |
Question: | Is this an all season oil |
Answer: | The control is within 5 meters and the child can control it remotely! |

User questions & answers
Question: | My pole saw has a little reservoir to add oil too. I guess it's a self oiler? So would this oil work? My neighbor just said just get chain oil |
Answer: | Yes, it is a self oiler. I've bought this oil to put in the reservoir. Bar and chain oil is what they recommend. I thought I was buying the gallon size for only $11.49, but was sent the qt for $6.68. Just make sure you double check what size you want. Good luck! |
Question: | Is the item contents one full gallon (128 oz.) of bar & chain oil |
Answer: | No, I only received 1 x 32 oz from Amazon (and not bottle"s" or "1 gallon") as described in the title. This one was directly sold by Amazon.com. |
Question: | Is it Biodegradable |
Answer: | No, it doesn't say that on the bottle. |
Question: | Why does the guy in the ad have a girls chainsaw |
Answer: | Not sure what a "girl's" chainsaw looks like. My mother, who is in her late 60's, uses the same chain saws as the men do when we cut trees down. Your "cute" little comment just confirms my thought that you are a "little" man and have most likely dealt with wee-willie syndrome for years. |
