User questions & answers

Question: I just returned this smart plug after their tech support told me it could not be used with Kindle Fire. Any good alternatives
Answer: I used my smart phone to get the app from google play store and set it up. You may be able to use your computer. It works well with the echo it is just a dace to get there. Good luck
Question: Can you plug in a power strip to this device
Answer: Yes - however, please bear in mind that toggling the Smart Plug on/off will affect all appliances/devices plugged into the power strip. Please also make sure the total power draw from the appliances/devices connected to the power strip does not exceed the Smart Plug's load specifications: Input voltage: 100 - 120VAC, 15A Output voltage: 100 - 120VAC, 15A Maximum Load: 15A Maximum Power: 1.8KW Regards, TP-Link Support
Question: What is max wattage of device to be connected to Smart Plug
Answer: Mine caught on fire with a little 1500 watt space heater, and to compare, my hair dryer is 1875 watts (not plugged into a smart plug of course), so it doesn't take much for these to catch on fire. Be careful if you use anything in it larger than maybe a desk lamp in my opinion. I unplugged all 3 of my kasa smart plugs and won't use them anymore.
Question: Does this device retain the settings if power is disconnected? Power outage, breaker blown, etc
Answer: Two parts to this answer... First, yes it retains it's settings if the power is off or it's unplugged. Second, I powered on my lamp then unplugged the unit from the wall. Upon plugging it back in after a couple seconds it turned itself back on (the last state it was in) and within a few more seconds re-connected to my wifi network.Hope this answers peoples questions about power outages and operation...

F.A.Q

  • Keep active locations in the camera's field of view. Your Arlo camera has a 110-degree viewing angle. Position your camera so that the space that you want to monitor is within the camera's field of view.
  • Elevate your camera. Mount your Arlo motion-detection camera at least 7 feet (2.1 meters) above the floor and aim it slightly downward for the best sensor performance.
  • Ensure that side-to-side traffic crosses Arlo's field of view. Arlo's motion sensor is much more sensitive to side-to-side movement across its field of view than to movement directly toward or away from the camera. The best area for motion detection is 5 feet to 20 feet (1.5 to 6 meters) from the camera position.

How can I extend the range of my Arlo system?

Instead of connecting the Arlo base station directly to your router, you can connect the base station to an Ethernet port on a Wi-Fi range extender or Powerline adapter. This means you can put the Arlo base station farther away from the router or in a central location in your home to get better coverage with your Arlo cameras.

Does motion detection work through glass or windows?

Motion detection does not work through windows reliably. Arlo cameras use motion detection technology that is inhibited by glass, especially windows. Passive infrared, the type of motion detection used by Arlo Wire-Free cameras, detects changes in heat. Most glass used in homes today is insulated, limiting the movement of heat through the glass.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the range of this device and is it z-wave or z-waze
Answer: This device supports Z-Wave Plus. You can find the manufacturer "documentation" here: https://goo.gl/0pAVzn (it is pretty sparse/basic)Their documentation unfortunately doesn't get into specifics regarding range. My current implementation with this device in my setup also doesn't really stretch the range yet (but I hope to soon).
Question: Where can i find the drivers for windows 10? device reports itself as "hubz zigbee com port" and "hubz z-wave com port" however no drivers can be foun
Answer: The question is drivers for what? It is using the com ports, so it is being recognised, but you want to do something with it, right? What do you want to do? Some piece of software that you are using on Win10 must be able to use a Zigbee or Z-Wave device. If they need that, they can communicate with the required comm port.
Question: Work good on pi 3b+ with openHAB
Answer: I bought one a few weeks ago. It's not hard to find. And it works with openHAB on a Pi 3b+.
Question: Can this work with Xiaomi's sensors
Answer: Yes. I got this to read xiaomi aqara temperature sensors with home assistant installed directly on a Pi and also on a virtual box instance with windows 10 as a host.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this thermostat control a z-wave outlet to turn on a plug-in heater at a set room temperature
Answer: I believe the short answer is "no" - However depending on what 'hub' you are using for automation, once you add this unit to your smart devices you might be able to set up an automation script where the hub would send the command to turn on the outlet for the plug in heater when the thermostat reaches a certain low temperature and turn it off when the temperature reported by the thermostat reaches a certain 'high' temp but would be done on the controller level - not within the thermostat. Hope this makes sense! I think you can do this within the smart things app if you are using that but would have to test and I don't have the smart outlet or a need to do this myself.
Question: Is this a standalone unit, or does it require connection to a hub
Answer: The beauty of this thermostat is it has a very simple user interface and it will work manually or connected to a z-wave hub. In manual mode, you do not have a scheduling function, but that's what you use a hub for. I have about 10 z-wave devices connected to a Wink hub (about $70) and set schedules through the app, which is a much better interface than, say, the touch screen interface on many of the Honeywell thermostats and doesn't cost a cent to maintain the schedules on the Wink cloud. So, if you don't care about schedules, it doesn't matter. If you do, then a setup like Wink is more universal and you won't be paying for extra thermostat features that you don't even use.
Question: Does it work with google home. if so what hub do i need
Answer: No, not directly as Google Home is not a zwave controller, you need a z-wave hub/controller first to control zwave devices. The only zwave controller that is compatible with Google Home at this time, is SmartThings hub, so if you have an ST and GH, yes they will work together.
Question: The manual says DO NOT USE batteries if you are using your house power (i.e. common 24V). Can you use batteries as a back up power source
Answer: There's not much reason to. If your furnace/AC has power, the unit would have power. If it doesn't, there's nothing for the thermostat to do because they won't turn on anyway. Its not a programmable thermostat, so there's no settings to lose. Your automation controller has to be the source of the schedule for this, so you'd just set it to recover the device when power came back on. That said, it probably won't hurt anything to have the batteries in there. The real issue is you do not want to join it to the Z-wave network using batteries if you're hard-wired, because it joins the network differently to conserve power. I suspect that's really why they say that.

GoControl Plug-In Lamp Dimmer Module (Z-Wave)

The GoControl Plug-In Lamp Dimmer Module (Z-Wave) offers Z-Wave network remote control for a connected dimmable lamp. Just plug the module into a grounded AC wall outlet, connect the lamp, and turn the lamp off or on or control its brightness with your Z-Wave controller. The module's button offers local control of the lamp, and its AutoSense feature lets you turn the lamp off and on using its native switch. The Dimmer Module also works as a repeater for your Z-Wave network, extending it an additional 130 feet.

What’s in the Box:

Control Your Dimmable Lamp via Z-Wave Network

The GoControl Plug-In Lamp Dimmer Module (Z-Wave) provides Z-Wave network control to a connected dimmable lamp. Simply plug the module into a grounded AC wall outlet and then plug the lamp into the module. Once the module is added to your Z-Wave network, you can dim the lamp or turn it off or on remotely with your Z-Wave controller. The module has two outlets: one is powered at all times, while the other is controlled remotely through your network. This 120-volt AC module offers a maximum of 300 watts of power.

AutoSense Offers Local Power Control for Connected Lamp

The Dimmer Module's AutoSense feature ensures that you can control your lamp's power, even without using your Z-Wave controller. Simply turn the lamp's manual switch off and then on, and AutoSense will instruct the Dimmer Module to turn the lamp on. The module also offers local control: push and release the module's button to turn the lamp off or on, or hold it down to control dimming.

Module Supports 40 Kbps Data Transmission

The Dimmer Module can offer networking support for systems that stream metadata, such as song title, artist, and album information for streaming audio to displays around your home.

Works as a Repeater for Your Z-Wave Network

For the Dimmer Module to work with your network, it must be within approximately 130 feet (via line of sight) from your Z-Wave Controller or the closest Z-Wave Repeater. However, this module also works as a repeater, extending your network up to an additional 130 feet via line of sight to reach other elements of your Z-Wave network that would otherwise be out of range of the hub or controller.

Compatible with All Other Z-Wave-Certified Products

Like all Z-Wave-certified products, the GoControl In-Wall Receptacle Outlet (Z-Wave) is compatible with other Z-Wave devices, including those made by other manufacturers. The GoControl family of Z-Wave products also includes switches, dimmers, outlets, thermostats, light bulbs and lighting retrofit kits and plug-in modules as well as security devices, including alert sounders, passive infrared motion detectors, and door/window sensors.

Question: is it zwave plus
Answer: Yes,Z wave
Question: The motion will not connect to to smartthings, please advise, what I am doing wrong
Answer: You may need to first reset the motion. You can do this with your SmartThings hub. Place the SmartThings hub in General Device Exclusion Mode (https://support.smartthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/200878314-How-to-exclude-Z-Wave-devices), then tamper the motion. Then try to add the motion again. GoControl Passive Infrared Motion Detector (Z-Wave)

The GoControl Passive Infrared Motion Detector (Z-Wave) provides motion-based security alerts and can also let you know about temperature changes for the area being surveyed. This wireless indoor security device senses motion activity and alerts you via your Z-Wave network. Its motion detection range is between 6 and 32 feet, and it senses and reports changes in temperature of 2 degrees Fahrenheit or greater, if desired. You can associate it with up to five connected Z-Wave devices to create your own customized home security alert responses. If the detector is tampered with, it will send you an alert and keep its red LED light on until reset. This motion sensor is compatible with all other Z-Wave-certified products.

What’s in the Box:

Senses Motion and Sends Alerts

The GoControl Passive Infrared Motion Detector (Z-Wave) is a wireless indoor security device that senses motion activity and reports it via your Z-Wave network. It has a long-life battery and sends an alert signal when the battery needs replacement. Its motion detection range is 6 to 32 feet, and it offers a horizontal coverage angle of 120 degrees. It can report temperature changes of 2 degrees Fahrenheit or greater.

Anti-Tamper Feature Alerts When Detector Is Disturbed

The Motion Detector's anti-tamper feature sends you an alert if the sensor's cover is removed, and the sensor's red LED light will stay lit once the cover has been disturbed. You can use your Z-Wave controller to connect this sensor with up to four others.

Compatible with All Other Z-Wave-Certified Products

Like all Z-Wave-certified products, the GoControl Passive Infrared Motion Detector (Z-Wave) is compatible with other Z-Wave devices, including those made by other manufacturers. The GoControl family of Z-Wave products also includes switches, dimmers, outlets, and plug-in modules as well as security devices, including alert sounders, passive infrared sensors, and door/window transmitters. User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with an existing Nexia system or do I have to have a different controller
Answer: It works with Intermatic controller (old enough), but I think it should work with different controllers too.
Question: Can anyone share (written or a picture) of how they mounted this device, as it does not fit ito a decora opening
Answer: I'm not sure if this helps, but mine sits on top of my garage door driver. The contacts are wired directly to the remote terminals, and i fashioned a power cable that is plugged in with my garage door opener.
Question: Is the load side isolated from the 110 side? Can I use the load side as a spst low voltage switch
Answer: Yes. They do ask that power for this device and the switched load be fed off the same circuit, but I'm not sure why. And when you're switching a low voltage load, like a garage door opener, this doesn't make sense to me (and that is a common usage for this device)
Question: I just bought one of these. I was told it was what I needed to control my garage door. I have received it but I have no idea how to wire it up. HELP
Answer: This unit is pretty simple to wire once you understand what a few simple things about the unit. 1. The unit needs 110v power to operate. Bummer but with the 110v the unit can act as a Z-wave repeater. I took an extra computer power cord I had, cut the computer end off and wired it to the unit, just match the color of the wires. Use wire nuts to tie the wires together and if you have electrical tape, wrap the wires and nuts for added safety. 2. The unit just acts like the button on your garage wall by closing the contacts (completing the circuit) on the garage door opener, the manual button. Find the two wires that go to the wall switch and wire each of the blue wires to each of those contacts. One of the wires is easy to find since that one wire is the only wire on one of the contacts. Once you find that one, follow that single wire to it's pair. 3. Pair up the unit Z-wave controller and you are good to go. Best of luck. Unit works great with Smartthings and a multisense sensor by the way. For additional help, see my comment below.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I associate my z-wave lamp dimmer with this switch so the commands go directly to the dimmer instead of the Smartthings hub
Answer: No. This switch requires both a device handler and a smart app and it runs in the cloud so it must use the hub and the internet.
Question: It works with toggle switch
Answer: This is a scene controller that works only with a smart hub, like SmartThings or Vera, to run a scene. The scene can be configured/programmed to "toggle" some smart switch, but it may require additional configuration and depends on the smart controller.
Question: I could include it to my smartthing hub. But I can't find a way to associate with lights or switches. Do I need a code to get this work? Not easy
Answer: You have to use a smart app like "Button Controller" to associate it with your lights.
Question: Is this compatible with the Wink Hub
Answer: Nope. Could never get it to work with my first gen wink. Returned it

Question: Will this work with a wink hub
Answer: Yes, I have it working with mine.
Question: Does the button turn on/off the load AND allow the outlet to continue to be controlled by the z-wave controller
Answer: One half of the outlet is a standard outlet. The other is a Z-Wave controlled outlet. The button is used mainly to include the Z-Wave outlet into the Z-Wave network during setup.
Question: can anyone confirm the LED light color? Description says its blue but I saw a review indicating it was green. Anyone know what the peak wattage is
Answer: LED is green.About the peak wattage, it says 15 Amp... It depends about the load type, If you are connecting a inductive motor there is a "factor power" to consider.. FP can be around .8, it means w=FP*Voltage*Amp. 0.8*120*15= 1440 watts... And for resistive load FP=1, so w=1*120*15= 1800 watts. If you are not sure what kind of load you have, try don't go more than 1300-1400 watts.Hope it helps :)
Question: Is the top or bottom of this plug the zwave controlled plug
Answer: Top plug is always on. Bottom plug is switched with z-wave control.
