14 best compost turners
Compost turners are specialized tools or machines used in the composting process to aerate and mix organic materials in compost piles or bins. They are designed to make the composting process more efficient and effective by ensuring that the materials decompose evenly and that adequate oxygen is available to the microorganisms responsible for decomposition. Here's what you should know about compost turners:
Aeration and Mixing: Compost turners are primarily used to aerate the compost pile. Good aeration is essential for composting because it provides oxygen to aerobic bacteria, which break down organic matter.By turning or mixing the compost pile, compost turners help distribute oxygen throughout the pile, preventing anaerobic conditions that can lead to bad odors.
Types of Compost Turners:
- Manual Turners: These are simple tools that you manually insert into the compost pile and turn to mix the materials. They are suitable for small-scale composting and are often shaped like pitchforks or corkscrews.
- Hand Crank Turners: These tools have a rotating mechanism, usually operated by a hand crank, which helps mix and aerate the compost pile with less physical effort.
- Tractor-Mounted Turners: Larger compost operations may use tractor-mounted turners, which are more substantial machines that can handle large volumes of compost. They are often used in commercial composting facilities.
Benefits:
- Faster Decomposition: Regularly turning the compost pile with a compost turner speeds up the decomposition process, resulting in finished compost more quickly.
- Improved Quality: Well-aerated and mixed compost tends to be of higher quality, with fewer clumps and more uniform decomposition.
- Odor Control: Proper aeration and mixing can help reduce foul odors in the compost pile.
Size and Design: Compost turners come in various sizes and designs to accommodate different composting needs. The choice of a turner depends on the scale of composting, the type of materials being composted, and available space.
Maintenance: Compost turners require minimal maintenance. Keep them clean and in good working condition to ensure efficient composting.
Safety: When using manual or hand crank compost turners, it's important to exercise caution to prevent injury. Wear appropriate protective gear and be mindful of your posture and movements to avoid strains or accidents.
Composting Tips: To maximize the benefits of a compost turner, follow these tips:
- Add a balanced mix of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials to the compost pile.
- Avoid overloading the pile to allow for proper aeration and turning.
- Turn the compost pile regularly, especially when you notice that the internal temperature is not rising or when there are signs of poor decomposition.
In summary, compost turners are valuable tools for anyone involved in composting organic materials, from small-scale home gardeners to large-scale commercial composting operations. They promote efficient decomposition by aerating and mixing the compost pile, resulting in faster decomposition, improved compost quality, and better odor control. The choice of a compost turner should align with the scale of your composting activities and the materials you are composting.

Shouldn't you enjoy everything in your garden? The Compost Crank is built to last. It's an easy, highly effective, and enjoyable way to tend your compost bin. It penetrates any material like an auger. Simply grasp the free-spinning handles, and crank clockwise into your pile. Lift without turning and the corkscrew pulls compost up from the bottom to thoroughly mix and aerate. Depending on how heavy your compost is, you may need to repeat this step layer by layer because it could be too heavy to lift. Once you've loosened the material you can go deeper. The tool is long enough to reach every corner of the bin, and light so you are lifting the compost and not the tool.

Question: | What is the hight and width of the clawed part |
Answer: | I suppose you could, considering the way it is made. Introducing a new way to "crank" up your compost heap from Lotech Products, the inventors of the original corkscrew compost aerator, the Compost Crank.
The Compost Crank Twist is a fast, easy, highly effective, and enjoyable way to tend your compost bin. Modeled after our original Compost Crank, the corkscrew aerator design easily works its way into any sort of compost, whether it's just light leaves or dense sticks and vines. It can be comfortably used with one or two hands. Simply grasp the curled handle, and twist the tool clockwise down into your pile. Lift straight up without turning, and the corkscrew pulls compost up from the bottom to thoroughly mix and aerate. Twist in, and twist back out to create air holes. Twist in the center, lift out and shake compost to the side to dig a hole and bury fresh material. The Compost Crank Twist is a complete, high quality composting tool.
The aerator never clogs. Simply lay the spiral on top of your compost or on the edge of your bin, and "unscrew" the stuck on material. Built to last for as long as you compost, you can rest assured the Twist will be there ready to mix your pile whenever you are.
Lotech Products is committed to making it as easy and effective as possible for people to compost.

User questions & answers
Question: | can i use this crank on a pile of horse manure |
Answer: | The Compost Crank Compost Aerator has been outside in rain, sleet, snow, -30F degree temps and 100+F degree heat since 2015 and still works incredibly well. If you are referring to the $28 "umbrella" style handle versus the offset "crank handle" In my opinion, the design of this handle would work easier and faster to screw in to the compost than the less expensive "umbrella" type handle which would take more effort to screw down into the compost. In my opinion, it is a well made product and well worth the cost. |
Question: | Can it be left outside? Any problems with rust? Thanks |
Answer: | Roughly about 40-45 inches long, total length. The auger portion is around 6 inches long. I didn't actually measure as it was out near the compost pile ready to do its great jobchurning up and oxygenating the pile. |
Question: | has the handle coming off issue been resolved with the design |
Answer: | My compost pile is pretty compacted too. I just start by not turning the compost turner all the way down into the pile. Just start with a shallow layer near the top and once that is broken up, go through again turning deeper into the pile. I am not too strong either so this worked for me. |
Question: | Is it tedious to continually drill down with this model, which doesn't have the 2-handed crook mechanism of the more-expensive model |
Answer: | Absolutely. I am an active 70 year old woman and I can manage it. It turns into the compost like one of those old hand drills our dads and grandpas used to use. You can drill down deep or only 6 - 8 inches depending on the amount of strength you want to exert to pull it back up. If you go deeper than you can pull, just turn it out backwards. I am pretty sure you will like it. There are two models...get the more expensive one...it is worth the money. |

- Easy to use – fantastic for beginners! The large openings and removable door make it easy to add Scraps/clippings and remove finished compost. Deep Fins on the body provide great ergonomic handholds.

Continuously swapping sides after finishing will create an uninterrupted flow of rich, healthy compost. Total capacity 37 gallons (5 cu Ft)
- Excellent aeration – all our composter models feature aeration holes as well as deep Fins to break up clumps inside the chamber and mix lots of oxygen into the compost. Tumbling composters allow far greater aeration than standard models.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the best mixture of scraps to put in the composter to start the first batch in a brand new yimby tumbler composter |
Answer: | Yes it does. It does not come with a mat. |
Question: | Any tips for winter usage, once temperatures cause the compost to freeze |
Answer: | Yes, if you print a cake on a shirt and make decorations for it then you could use it for cake decorating purposes |
Question: | do you have to put it together and is it difficult we are not good at assembly |
Answer: | I use a teflon sheet and no you don't have to press too hard. I used to use my iron and this thing is AAAAAmazing!!! Time and heat control... no more guessing or over heating. |
Question: | Is it bear proof |
Answer: | Your iron may be greatly superior to mine...But the advantages that this heat press has over my iron are these: 1) I'm able set the exact temperature I need. (I didn't realize what a difference this would make!) 2) The heat press is HEAVY. I want a lightweight iron for ironing clothes, but want pressure (which weight provides) for heat transfer designs. 3) This heat press has a timer. I've been amazed how much better my work turns out when I'm a little more careful about the timing. These are the three major advantages I've found in using a heat press over my iron. To be truthful, any heat press probably delivers these. But the smaller, more compact size (even with the largest, the 12 x 10--which I purchased), and hence, easier storage when not in use...is what tipped the scales for me when choosing the Cricut over the other brands of heat presses. Hope this helps your decision-making! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How sturdy is this item? Will it fall over in a strong wind? I live where the winds blow fairly hard at times |
Answer: | I actually toss a little bit (maybe 6 cups) of soil from my garden in my compost when starting it out and it seems to give it a good kick. Just add 50/50 green and brown material with it and it will take off. Make sure to check it often if it gets sunny outside. Compost seems to dry out fast when it's hot, due to bacteria and fungus using a lot more water when it gets hot. |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | I keep adding to my compost all winter. I just don't turn it over as often, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. While nothing will "cook" during the winter, you'll have fresh material on standby for when it does start to warm up. I suppose my only tip would be to make sure you add material to it during the daytime and make sure your composter stays in a sunny spot. The door can freeze "shut" at night due to the lower temperatures and any moisture along the track.I've already been through one winter with it and I sincerely had no issues and didn't have to make any changes to the way I used the tumbler. |
Question: | at what point do I stop putting waste in and stop so it fully composts? There seems to be a lack of info about the transition |
Answer: | You have to assemble it. I brought it about a year ago and put off trying to put it together until yesterday, because of all the reviews saying it was difficult. I didn't find it hard to figure out how to do it , and thought the instructions that came with it did a good job of showing you how to do it . It was time consuming because you have to put in 57 small screws with the nuts. I'm a woman, 76 years old with no especial insight on assembling things. It looks like it will do a good job for me. |
Question: | can we get compost tea |
Answer: | NO, NOT AT ALL. Compared to actual bear-proof stuff, this lightweight plastic thing is like playdough. It's not pretending to be otherwise. Bears require heavy metal and tricky locking mechanisms--and, even so, they still break open car doors and trunks. If you have bear issues, maybe keep this in an area enclosed by a tall, strong fence, or in a garage/shed/barn, if you have one big enough for that to work and not overwhelm you with stink. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this composter black bear resistant. If not - do you know of one that is |
Answer: | Don’t really know because it was bought for my wife who has two other compost containers. She has transferred some material to the new one. She does love her new composter. States that it is exactly what she wasted. |
Question: | Can I leave this outside in the winter or will it wear out faster? I could put it in my garage but worried it would smell |
Answer: | I have no idea. The description doesn't mention that it is BPA free. I would think this is a question for the seller/manufacturer. |
Question: | Can it be assembled as a single chamber |
Answer: | 43 gallons is about 0.2 cubic yards. |
Question: | Is the plastic of the compost bin BPA free |
Answer: | Yes, you can use it as a single chamber tumbler. but if so, the design of 2 doors would be redundant. |

Answer: | We live in North Carolina and had a very hot summer last year...record amount of 100+ days. We have only had the bins for a year and have seen no breakdown. The only thing that had happened was in a bad storm we had a 12in tree fall on one of the bins and all it did was tear the top about 2in between holes. We are very pleased with how they are and for the price you can't beat them...Hope this helps |
Question: | Can I overlap it around a wire mesh composter |
Answer: | You can, tho there's really no need to. The bin comes with five interlocking plastic "keys" that keep the bin shut pretty tightly. I've used my bins for about two and a half years now and they have stood up to all the wear I could put them to... Mainly putting it up, filling it up to the brim, and taking it down to move it on many multiples of occasions. In fact, I found that the method of using this composter most efficiently is using it to contain all of your materials in by filling it, (preferably by green and brown layer mixing), letting it sit for a day, and then taking it down and setting it back up next to the first stack to refill again. Using it this way, you could potentially have a number of mounds all working sequentially in a row composting, and when one is ready to turn, just use the bin set up next to the oldest to turn the pile into and repeat. These bins are very hardy, I have gotten a lot of use out of mine without the need for any wire mesh just using those keys to keep the screen closed. One thing that may be valuable to you, depending on how fast you can fill it, are little wire stakes to hold it into the ground, though I've never had any issue with it wanting to fall over at all unless there are heavy winds, or if you don't have enough starting material to form as a nice base to hold the circle in place as you fill it. Usually about a foot or two will be fine to keep it up as you fill it progressively, though it's really meant to be used for massive amounts of materials to fill it, as the process of composting works best when the pile is greater than three feet tall. If you do not have much starting material, you could potentially decrease the diameter of the bin to as small as you choose to, as the composter material can be overlapped and still locked together to a pretty small circle if need be. |
Question: | Can you buy two of these and use them to construct one uber large bin |
Answer: | When I realized that connecting 2 of these together results in FOUR times the volume (volume of cylinder increases by square of the radius, and radius doubles if circumference doubles), I went ahead and gave it a shot. It is working GREAT for my purposes, which is simply as a large leaf bin instead of paying to haul the leaves away (and eventually I will get some good leaf mulch out of it). I currently have 3 of these bins, 2 connected together purely for leaves, and 1 stand alone for which I will attempt a hot compost. Before filling the connected bins it was fairly floppy, but once it was about half way full (30 minutes of scooping leaf piles using my hand leaf grabbers) it gained good structure. It's not going anywhere, and we've already had high winds. I have not needed to use stakes for either setup, as they are rigid and heavy when reasonably full (even with just leaves!) and I intend to keep them full. So if you have a ton of leaves like I do, this works great and is much more efficient than multiple single bins. But it does require a good amount of material to remain in the bins at all times. If you plan on a hot/active compost, this is probably not a great idea for the reasons others have mentioned. I have a picture of the connected structure if anyone is interested. |
