12 best chair alarms
Chair alarms are devices designed to enhance the safety and well-being of individuals who may be at risk of falling or experiencing mobility issues, particularly in healthcare and senior care settings. These alarms are categorized as mobility daily living aids and fall prevention tools and are commonly found in hospitals, nursing homes, and home healthcare environments. Here's what you should know about chair alarms:
Purpose and Function: Chair alarms serve as a proactive safety measure to alert caregivers or healthcare providers when a patient or elderly individual attempts to leave or transfer from a chair or wheelchair without assistance. The main purpose is to prevent falls and accidents.
Components: Chair alarms typically consist of the following components:
- Pressure-sensitive pad or sensor: Placed on the chair or wheelchair seat, this pad detects changes in pressure when the individual attempts to rise.
- Alarm unit: This unit emits a loud sound or signal when pressure is applied to the sensor pad.
- Cord or connector: Links the sensor pad to the alarm unit.
Operation: When a person sits on the chair equipped with a chair alarm, the pressure on the sensor pad keeps the alarm unit silent. However, when the individual attempts to stand or transfer out of the chair, releasing the pressure, the alarm unit is activated, emitting a loud alert sound. This prompts caregivers or healthcare staff to respond promptly to assist the individual.
Types of Chair Alarms:
- Wireless Chair Alarms: These systems use wireless technology to transmit the alert signal to a receiver or pager carried by the caregiver, offering more flexibility in monitoring.
- Corded Chair Alarms: These alarms have a cord connecting the sensor pad to the alarm unit, which is typically placed nearby.
Benefits: Chair alarms help prevent falls and injuries by notifying caregivers or healthcare providers of a patient's movement. They are especially valuable for individuals with dementia, impaired mobility, or those at risk of wandering.
Usage Settings: Chair alarms are commonly used in:
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Nursing homes and long-term care facilities
- Home healthcare settings
- Assisted living facilities
- Hospice care
Considerations:
- Chair alarms should be positioned and adjusted correctly to ensure they effectively detect attempts to leave the chair.
- Proper training and education for caregivers and staff on how to use chair alarms are essential.
- Chair alarms are part of a broader fall prevention strategy, which may include other safety measures and equipment.
In summary, chair alarms are valuable safety devices in healthcare and senior care settings, helping to prevent falls and accidents by alerting caregivers when individuals attempt to leave their chairs or wheelchairs unassisted. These alarms contribute to enhanced patient safety and well-being.

Product description
This wireless/cordless system has both the bed pad and chair pad. When the patient lifts their weight from either pad, the alarm will sound up to 100' from the pad. Pads are made of a high quality soft vinyl, incontinence protected and feature a layer of foam for more comfort for the patient. The alarm monitor is about the size of a large coffee cup and can be easily carried about the home. The alarm features 3 volume levels and an on/off switch. The bed pad should be placed under the lower sheet in the bed, or in the chair. When the patient lifts their weight from the pad, the alarm will sound. The caregiver can take the alarm anywhere up to 100' from the pads and still receive the alarm. This system will also wake the care person at night so they can rest easy, knowing they will know the moment their patient starts to rise from their bed. This system operates on 3 C batteries, (not included) however, to reduce the amount of batteries you will use for the life of your products, you might wish to purchase an AC adapter for this alarm unit. Contact seller for details.
- Complete system includes 1 wireless bed alarm, 1 cordless bed sensor pad, and 1 cordless chair sensor pad. All items have a 1 year manufacturer warranty. System enables the caregiver to decide where to hear the alarm notification. Use this product for fall prevention; know when someone is getting out of a bed or chair unattended.
- Place the cordless bed sensor pad 30" across the width of the bed, under the fitted sheet, positioning the pad under the resident's shoulder blades for an alert when the patient is sitting up in bed. For an alert when the patient is exiting the bed, place the pad underneath their hips.
- The alarm will sound continuously when weight is removed from the pad. To silence the alarm, either turn the alarm off, (switch located on the side of the alarm), or reapply weight to the bed sensor pad.
- Place the cordless chair sensor pad on the seat of a firm chair. Alarm will sound when the resident is arising. Alarm will sound continuously when weight is removed from the pad. Silence the alarm by turning it off, or reapply weight to the chair sensor pad.
- The wireless alarm can be placed in a convenient location with the caregiver, up to 100 feet away from the cordless sensor pads. Alarm features adjustable volume and a gentle chime alert. The entire system is pre-programmed and ready for use upon delivery. Use 3 “C” size batteries for portability, (batteries not included). Or purchase Smart Caregiver AC Adapter model AC-04, (sold separately).
User questions & answers
Question: | Could i add an dditional chair alarm to this system? My dad has 2 chairs that he mainly uses during the day |
Answer: | You may add up to six products to the cordless alarm that you currently have which is the 433-EC. |
Question: | Is this made by Smart Caregiver |
Answer: | Ye, it is made by smart caregiver |
Question: | Do you recommend this product for a king sized bed |
Answer: | The pad size is not depending on the bed size. The 10x30 is recommended for anyone 120lbs and above. The 20x30 is recommended for anyone below 120lbs. It will work fine with a king size bed. Please the pad horizontally across the bed with the bottom of the bed pad above the person's waistline so when person does get up his or her body will be completely off the bed pad alerting the alarm monitor. This is the best way to get the quickest alert response time. |
Question: | Do you need to reactivate the alarm each time the person gets up? How does the alarm know if the person is on the bed or the chair |
Answer: | No, you do not need to reactivate the alarm. The weight of the person laying on or sitting on the pad keeps it off. When they get up and their weight is gone, the alarm sounds. When they lay on or sit back on it, the alarm goes back off. There is a button to push when the person lays down or sits on the pad. When you get them up, you push it to turn it off while they are away from the pad. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can someone with a pacemaker use this device since it has a magnetic connection |
Answer: | Not sure. |
Question: | im actually looking at this to sound an alarm when my dog pulls a couch cushion to chew on it. it seems pretty straight forward, but it’d work |
Answer: | To turn off the alarm you have to hold the button in for almost a minute with ours. I do apologize if you have tried that and doesn’t work |
Question: | Does the chair pads work too with this same device |
Answer: | I would say it is fairly loud, but then if you need to monitor someone who may leave a chair when they should not without assistance, you want it louder. It is not a steady sound but more of an intermittent beep. It worked very well for me as I would move it from my husband's wheelchair to his recliner. |
Question: | Does it have a clip on the back? I want to buy something for my dad to alert if he falls and we are not in the room |
Answer: | I believe the monitor/alarm has to be attached to the pad. |

I ended up using a baby monitor to amplify the sound for when I was asleep. I hope this was helpful. |
Question: | Why does the pad only have a 14 day warranty? Does it not last any longer than 14 days |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the distance cover range |
Answer: | lol, one person says I do not know what size battery it takes, another says AA's and yet another says AAA's. Kinda makes you wonder doesn;t it! Why even try to answer the question if you have no idea what size battery it takes? |
Question: | can you order more than 1 alarm box |
Answer: | Yes. The alarm is quite loud. This has kept my Mother from many falls through the day and night. Good purchase. |
Question: | Has anyone replaced the battery? where can i find one? tm-11(v |
Answer: | The base unit has a Velcro strap on it that I have attached to the bed rail. Then I attach the clip (which is hard to open and latch but VERY secure) to my mom's shirt around her shoulder. I guess you could attach the velcro loop on the base set on a belt. Didn't read original? . Then where would you hook the clap? My mom would see something bulky on her belt and dismantle it asap! |
