13 best fuzz pedals
Fuzz pedals are a popular type of guitar effect pedal used to alter the tone of an electric guitar by introducing a distinctive, saturated, and fuzzy distortion sound. These pedals are widely used in various musical genres, particularly in rock, blues, and psychedelic music. Here are some key details about fuzz pedals:
Sound Characteristic: Fuzz pedals create a thick and saturated distortion that can range from a mild, warm saturation to an intense, buzzy, and chaotic sound. This unique texture adds a distinct character to the guitar's tone.
Transistor-Based: Fuzz pedals typically use transistor-based circuitry to achieve their signature sound. Germanium and silicon transistors are commonly used, each offering a different tonal characteristic. Germanium transistors are often associated with a smoother, warmer fuzz, while silicon transistors can produce a harsher, more aggressive fuzz.
Controls: Most fuzz pedals feature basic controls such as volume, gain, and tone. These knobs allow guitarists to adjust the level of fuzz, the overall volume, and the tonal characteristics of the effect.
Vintage vs. Modern: Fuzz pedals come in various designs, including vintage-style circuits that aim to replicate the sound of classic fuzz pedals from the 1960s and 1970s. Modern fuzz pedals may incorporate additional features, such as EQ options or additional gain stages.
Notable Fuzz Pedals: Some well-known fuzz pedals include the Fuzz Face, originally produced by Dallas Arbiter and later by Dunlop, the Big Muff Pi by Electro-Harmonix, and the Pro Co Rat. Each of these pedals has its unique sonic characteristics and has been used by famous guitarists across different genres.
Usage: Guitarists use fuzz pedals to create various effects, from a fat and creamy sustain to wild and chaotic textures. Fuzz is often used for solos, rhythm guitar parts, and experimental sonic exploration.
Chaining with Other Effects: Fuzz pedals can be used in combination with other effects pedals like overdrive, distortion, and modulation pedals to create complex and layered sounds.
Placement in Signal Chain: Fuzz pedals are typically placed early in the signal chain, before other gain-based effects like overdrive and distortion, to achieve the desired tone and texture.
Power Supply: Fuzz pedals can be powered by batteries or external power supplies, depending on the model. Many modern pedals use standard 9-volt DC power.
In summary, fuzz pedals are a crucial part of the electric guitarist's toolkit, offering a distinctive and versatile distortion effect that has been used by countless musicians to shape their signature sound. Whether you're aiming for a classic vintage fuzz or a modern twist on the effect, there are numerous options available to suit your sonic preferences.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best fuzz pedals on the marketProduct description
The super badass variac fuzz is a dream come true for guitar players chasing vintage fuzz tone. This tasty fuzz is aggressive and biting, and with the twist of a knob, you can drag it into that “dying battery” territory much prized by tonechasers-no need to manage a collection of half-dead batteries. To create the super badass variac fuzz, the MXR design team dusted off a rare vintage silicon circuit, tuned it up, and added a variac control so you can set the pedal’s voltage anywhere from 5 to 15V. For that wonderful saggy fuzz effect you get as a 9V battery loses its power, just lower the voltage by turning the variac knob counterclockwise. Increasing the voltage raises the effect’s headroom, opening up the fuzz for a more transparent sound at 15V. The super badass variac fuzz’s simple interface is rounded out with tone, output, and gain controls, and it all comes in a road-ready housing with true bypass switching.
- Set voltage from 5v-15v
- Lower voltage for “dying battery” effect
- Increase voltage for more headroom & clarity
- The Package Dimensions of the Product is 2.5"H x 5.5"L x 4.5"W
User questions & answers
Question: | Does it sound different with a buffered pedal before it? I.e., should it be first in the chain like other fuzzes |
Answer: | It depends on your preference! If you typically likes fuzzes at the beginning of your chain, then I would suggest trying it at the beginning of your chain. Then I would suggest trying it elsewhere on your chain to experiment. There are really no set rules. As for the buffer, same idea. Some people like buffers to get a “clearer” signal, some people prefer no buffer to get a darker tone. |
Question: | Can you use a 9v power supply with this |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Does this pedal have that nice violin like lead sound? similar to eric johnson |
Answer: | Eric Johnson uses a strat into a marshall. The pedals for that sound are a vintage tube driver, a vintage echoplex tape delay, and a plate reverb. It's also technique. |
Question: | can I have this gift wrapped |
Answer: | I dont see why not. I guess that's a question you should pose to Amazon |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this digital or silicone pedal |
Answer: | Silicone analog i belive |
Question: | What chip(s) does this use |
Answer: | No clue...but its 25 bux and pretty awesome for the price..yeap its plastic but its 25 bux.. type 2 fuzz is my favorite. Sounds like fumanchu |
Question: | Would any 9v battery (6lr61 size) itself would run the pedal? if it does, how do i turn it off? do i get to take in/out the battery every single use |
Answer: | Yes on the battery. The pedal turns on and off with the foot switch. You dont have to remove the battery to turn it off. Unplug the input cord will also turn off the pedal. I use a multi tap adapter with mine as they are cheaper in the long run. |
Question: | Does the pedal vary the fuzz or is it just on/off fuzz switch |
Answer: | This is a direct clone of the Boss Hyper Fuzz, which in turn was a super-high-gain clone of something else (I lost track). The design is such that the pedal's gain control does very little, and the pedal does not clean up with the guitar's volume knob. Essentially, you get two fuzz sounds, plus EQ, as well as a very useful clean boost function. It puts serrations into your single-note lead lines, and extra power into power chords; and it can help create a titanic parallel bass tone. Anything more complicated than that, even major third intervals, will go to mush. That said, Boss Hyper Fuzz pedals are $250 and up on Reverb as of this writing, which is fool's money if you ask me, considering the limited range of the design. $25 is a better price, even if you find yourself only using the boost function and EQ most days. |
