Answer:	The difference between a TRS plug/jack and a TRRS unit has nothing to do with Apple vs. the rest of the world. Earbuds from any manufacturer that have a TRS plug are listen-only (Left & Ground wires for left channel, Right & Ground wires for right channel). 3 leads = stereo listenining, period. In contrast, a TRRS plug inserted into a TRRS-ready jack provides a fourth lead, which is what makes its mic work.
