12 best lab thermometers
Lab thermometers are specialized instruments used in laboratory and industrial settings to measure temperature with a high degree of accuracy and precision. These thermometers are designed to meet specific requirements and standards for scientific and industrial applications. Here's what you need to know about lab thermometers:
Types of Lab Thermometers:
Liquid-in-Glass Thermometers: These traditional thermometers consist of a glass tube filled with a liquid (usually mercury or alcohol) that expands or contracts with changes in temperature. The temperature is read by observing the level of the liquid against a scale on the thermometer.
Digital Thermometers: Digital lab thermometers use electronic sensors to measure temperature and display the reading digitally. They are often equipped with features such as automatic data logging and high/low-temperature alarms.
Infrared (IR) Thermometers: These thermometers measure temperature by detecting the infrared radiation emitted by an object. They are non-contact and suitable for measuring the temperature of objects that are difficult to access or are in motion.
Thermocouples: Thermocouples are temperature sensors made of two different metal wires that generate a voltage proportional to the temperature difference between the two junctions. They are highly versatile and can measure a wide temperature range.
Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs): RTDs use the change in electrical resistance of a wire (usually platinum) with temperature to determine temperature accurately. They are known for their stability and precision.
Calibration: Lab thermometers are typically calibrated to ensure accuracy. Calibration involves comparing the thermometer's readings to a reference thermometer or a known temperature source to adjust it if necessary.
Accuracy and Precision: Lab thermometers are designed for high accuracy and precision, often with specific tolerances and standards that must be met for scientific research and industrial processes.
Temperature Range: Different lab thermometers are designed for various temperature ranges, from cryogenic temperatures to extremely high temperatures, depending on the application.
Application-Specific: Lab thermometers are used in a wide range of applications, including chemistry, biology, pharmaceuticals, food processing, environmental monitoring, and industrial processes such as quality control and materials testing.
Safety: Some lab thermometers are designed to be intrinsically safe or explosion-proof, making them suitable for use in hazardous environments.
Recording and Data Logging: Many modern lab thermometers have the capability to record temperature data over time, allowing for analysis and documentation of temperature variations.
Traceability: In scientific and industrial settings, traceability is crucial. Lab thermometers are often traceable to national or international standards to ensure consistency and reliability in measurements.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance and handling are essential to ensure the accuracy and longevity of lab thermometers. Regular calibration and careful storage are common practices.
Overall, lab thermometers are essential tools for researchers, scientists, and technicians in various fields, where precise temperature measurement is critical for experiments, processes, and quality control. The choice of thermometer depends on the specific application and temperature range required.

User questions & answers
Question: | will this fit a 24 40 thermometer adapter |
Answer: | Yes. The thermometers are approximately 6.5mm in diameter. The normal thermometer adapter has an opening in the center of 7mm, with an O-ring so that they will accommodate thermometers between 6-7mm. The center hole is the same whether it is a 14/20, 19/22 or a 24/40 adapter. |
Question: | What is the diameter on this thermometer |
Answer: | Approximately 3 mm. Same as most glass thermometers. Same size as what is in a beer brewing kit. |
Question: | Can this be used outdoors to measure temperture |
Answer: | Hi Robert! My name is Mike at Bel-Art/H-B Instrument & SP Scienceware. Absolutely! I hope this answered your question, but if not, please email me at [email protected]… |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is its Range |
Answer: | 0 to 220 F or -20 to 110 C. It is a partial immersion thermometer (the tip of the thermometer up to about 2.5 " is to be exposed to the liquid of gas to measure the temperature). It is NOT total immersion thermometer (cannot be totally placed in the oven or similar to measure the temperature). |
Question: | how long is it |
Answer: | It is 11 3/4 ". about 12 inches. |
Question: | Is it a mercury thermometer |
Answer: | No, it is not mercury filled. Please read this for filling: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_thermometer |
Question: | how is its acuracy |
Answer: | Doesn't agree with other thermometers. Maybe it's only useful for liquids, too slow to react to changes in air temperature. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used on animals |
Answer: | It's highly accurate. So long as the probe can be inserted into whatever medium whose temperature is stable for a short period, it should work. It's highly accurate in my aquarium, though I've not tried it on animals. |
Question: | Description says + or - 1 degree c accuracy. how is that considered traceable accuracy? traceable needs to be to more than +/- .3c or .5f |
Answer: | I think that your definition of "traceable" is faulty. To be traceable, it must have been tested against a certified standard, and show to be accurate within the stated specs - with appropriate documentation. It's more complicated than that, of course, but there is nothing about "+/- .3C" in the definition of "traceable." |
Question: | Can i recalibrate this if needed |
Answer: | Yes. You can send it to Thomas and they will re-certify the unit. |
Question: | Would like a thermometer accurate to 0.3 f but only need range from 60 to 90 f. maybe limiting the range can produce that accurracy. models |
Answer: | Precision electronic thermometers are available--as are precision liquid-in-glass thermometers--but , either type can be seriously expensive. (BTW: "Precision" is meaningless for consumer grade thermometers, like "heavy-duty" or "professional".) These days, the best digital thermometers are vastly more accurate and stable than the best LiG. I've got Brooklyn Thermometer 24" LiGs that don't even come close to my Martel BetaProbes. You can do a poor man's single-point calibration comparing this Thomas model to a fever thermometer--which is required to be +/-0.2F around body temperature (but not all actually are that accurate). Fertility thermometers ~claim~ +/-0.1F. If you are an electronics-techie type (or know one) medical catheter themistors cost $12 to $15 and can be read to the accuracy you need with any decent DMM (Digital Multi-Meter). The Amphenol MA100GG103A can be found at Digi-Key or Mouser, and also here on Amazon: ASIN B00DKYM3EY. A table to convert resistance to temperature is in the data sheet. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this thermometer get the temperature in a dryer |
Answer: | I doubt it. The wavelength of the sensor is 8-14 microns and plexiglass has very low transmittance beyond about 3 microns (according to this spec sheet http://www.plexiglas.com/export/sites/plexiglas/.content/medias/downloads/sheet-docs/plexiglas-general-information-and-physical-properties.pdf). Whether or not the material your dryer door is made of is the same is another matter. If the transmittance is close to zero then you will essentially be measuring the temperature of the outside of the door. |
Question: | Does this work on internal meat temperatures |
Answer: | If you cut the meat in half you might be able to take the surface temperature of the meat, but then your meat is going to be cut in half and that's not real appetizing. Blue cheese is very appealing, maybe some bacon. |
Question: | Will this take the temperature of a child's fever also |
Answer: | If your child can open their mouth and hold it open for a few seconds, then YES! It is an extremely accurate way to measure temperature! Just point the dot at the back of the throat, and it gives you an immediate and accurate reading. I'm at a loss why people only considered pointing it at their foreheads or other external body parts. |
Question: | What is the range (distance from gun to target) or recommended for this gun? How accurate is it at 6-8 feet range |
Answer: | The 12:1 ratio means at 12" the gun is accurate for a one inch spot. So at 6'-8' it will be accurate for a 6"-8" inch spot. So the farther you get away from the spot being measured, the less accurate it will be. Like Cheryl said, think of it like a cone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What do you do with the min/max button. How do you use it |
Answer: | If you are taking several temperatures of an item over time, e.g., you are wanting to bring the temperature up over 145F, and you begin taking a temp every few minutes, after a few minutes you walk away from the process and can't remember what your last reading was - the max value will tell you (the most recent max value recorded). The same applies in reverse, say you are bringing a temperature down over time, you check every few minutes, walk away from the process, can't remember your lowest reading - the min value will show you the most recent value recorded. It can be a useful feature. That is basically the way I use that function. If you think you are going to use it that way, clear the values in memory first, so you start with a clean record. |
Question: | Can I put the whole thermometer in the oven? Or will this melt it |
Answer: | I wouldn't. It can take the heat of a dishwasher but that's not close to the temps used in an oven. I've stuck mine into a roast to see if the inside is at the proper temp like using an instant read digital thermometer. It does fine in that capacity. |
Question: | Can this be calibrated |
Answer: | Saru, my owner's manual does not mention calibration. I'm sure the factory has a calibration routine but this may not be accessible through a secret button combination (or it could be?). Here is the specification nugget for this probe and for my purposes this is accurate enough not to need calibration: Temperature Range: -40° to 450°F (-40° to 232°C) * Accuracy: ±1F° (±0.5C°) from 32° to 212°F (0° to 100°C) * Resolution: 0.1°Regards, Rich |
Question: | What do you do with the min/max button. How do you use it |
Answer: | All I know is the max is most likely a preset number, press the button and it shows on mine 190.4 and the min shows 46.4 on mine. I use mine for work, I test concrete so I haven't had the chance to check out all the features. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the item durable? - Is this item easy to use? - What are the dimensions of this item |
Answer: | They have been pretty durable. Have only used 2 and none have broken. They are 12 inches long and smaller than a pen around. not sure on circumference. Snuggly fits in a rubber stopper. |
Question: | Are these glass thermometers |
Answer: | Yes. They are glass. |
Question: | What is the diameter of the thermometer |
Answer: | The diameter of the thermometer is very slightly out of round. It measures 0.241" to 0.244". The fluid bulb end is slightly tapered to 0.220". The very upper end was melted, slightly flattened and formed into an eye that can be used to hang the thermometer with a cord or wire. Max outside diameter of the eye is 0.250". Overall length is 11.75". I hope this helps. John Kerwin |
Question: | Can these be used for dry temperatures? Looking at temperature variations to model global warming and the effect of albedo on temperature |
Answer: | I purchased 10 of these thermometers 3 years ago. I've used two of them to measure my pool temperature. The other 8 have been in the kitchen pantry for 3 years now. I pulled them out and read each one. 4 of them were within 1 degree of each other, and were obviously measuring the ambient temp in my pantry (76F). My handling of the units could easily account for the 1 degree variation. The other 4 were measuring way LOW in the 50-60F range. Upon closer examination I noticed that the red alcohol indicator fluid on these 4 had separated with a section at the very top of the thermometer and the rest at the bottom of the thermometer. I don't know why this happened other than the whole package of thermometers was laying on its side for 3 years and has seen a lot of temperature fluctuations while in a strange orientation . I don't know if this will help to answer your question, but my personal belief is that these SHOULD be perfectly suitable to measure ambient air temps as well as liquid temps. Good luck.
