10 best radio controlled clocks
Radio-controlled clocks, also known as atomic clocks or atomic synchronized clocks, are timekeeping devices that automatically synchronize their time with a radio signal transmitted by atomic clocks maintained by national timekeeping organizations. These clocks are designed to provide highly accurate and reliable timekeeping, making them a popular choice for both residential and commercial use. Here are some key points about radio-controlled clocks:
Accuracy: Radio-controlled clocks are renowned for their accuracy. They are designed to maintain timekeeping precision within a fraction of a second, thanks to the radio signal they receive from atomic clocks.
Atomic Clocks: The radio signal received by these clocks comes from atomic clocks operated by national timekeeping agencies, such as NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) in the United States or the PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt) in Germany. These atomic clocks are incredibly precise and provide the basis for accurate timekeeping worldwide.
Automatic Synchronization: Radio-controlled clocks are equipped with a radio receiver that picks up the time signal broadcast by atomic clocks. Typically, they synchronize during the night to minimize interference and ensure accurate timekeeping.
Time Zones: Many radio-controlled clocks can automatically adjust to different time zones. When you set your clock to a specific time zone, it will receive the radio signal and adjust itself accordingly.
Daylight Saving Time: These clocks can also automatically account for daylight saving time (DST). When the DST signal is received, the clock will either move forward or backward one hour as needed.
Battery Powered: Most radio-controlled clocks are battery-powered, which means they continue to keep accurate time even during power outages.
Indoor and Outdoor Models: Radio-controlled clocks come in various styles and designs to suit different preferences and settings. Some are designed for indoor use, while others are suitable for outdoor applications and can resist weather elements.
Home Decor: Radio-controlled clocks are available in a wide range of designs and sizes to complement various home decor styles. They can be found in wall clock, tabletop, and desk clock formats.
Easy to Set Up: Setting up a radio-controlled clock is relatively easy. Typically, you need to insert batteries, choose your time zone, and let the clock synchronize with the atomic clock signal.
Reliability: These clocks are highly reliable and require minimal maintenance.Once set up, they will automatically maintain precise time without the need for manual adjustments.
In summary, radio-controlled clocks are a popular choice for accurate and hassle-free timekeeping. They receive radio signals from atomic clocks to ensure that they always display the correct time, including adjustments for time zones and daylight saving time. They come in various designs to suit different home decor styles and are known for their accuracy and reliability.

User questions & answers
Question: | What if we set it to international time zones, will the radio interfere with this |
Answer: | Yes. This clock is made to work atomically only for the 4 time zones in the US: Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern. Outside of these time zones, the quartz capability operates, while the atomic capability is inoperable. |
Question: | Is the clock totally silent? I can't stand the noise that some clocks can make. I do not want to hear the hands moving at all |
Answer: | I have never noticed any noise out of the clocks. I have 10 or more at my work. Some are in offices and no one ever mentioned noise from them. I have a kuckoo clock at home, so I must admit clock noise is not an issue for me. |
Question: | Does this clock "tick-tock" or is it silent? Thanks |
Answer: | Mine varies, sometimes silent and sometimes ticks rather loudly, easily audible from across the room if nothing else is making noise. However it's a fairly low-pitch airy tick sound that I don't find annoying at all. I probably wouldn't want it in a bedroom or a study room though. |
Question: | We have tried 3 times with new batteries and the clock will work for 5 hours and then stop |
Answer: | I found that over the first year, it could not handle the daylight saving/standard time switch at all. After the first year, it has generally not kept accurate time at all -- started off by being an hour off, but now just random amounts of time off: anywhere form 5 minutes off to 50 minutes off the time. I've pitched mine into the trash and will look for another brand.I believe that almost all the analog clocks sold on Amazon have the same mechanism made in China (the brand like "Lacrosse" or others is just the maker of the external stuff). Generally, they stop working after a year or two. Read all the reviews. I've given up trying to buy a wall clock on Amazon and will get one at a store where returns are easy if there is a problem. |

How do atomic clocks work?
Atomic clock is an extremely accurate timepiece. Most atomic clocks in North America use WWVB's transmissions to set the correct time automatically. They can receive the time signal transmitted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).The NIST broadcasts the time signal (WWVB,60KHz) continuously from Fort Collins, Colorado. It is expected that the signal can reach a distance of over 2,000 miles from the transmitter. This signal can be received anywhere in the continental USA and Canada .
When does the clock automatically receive the time signal?
This atomic digital clock will automatically receive the time signal every day at midnight and makes any required adjustments to the time setting. After an unsuccessful signal reception, the atomic digital clock will search every hour for 7 minutes, up to 3 hours. After successful reception of the time signal you may need to change the time zone or DST setting. The default is Eastern time zone and DST on.
How to confirm the time signal received successfully?
The WAVE OK indicator and the antenna tower icon will appear on the LCD when the time signal is successfully received. In contrast, if the automatic update is unsuccessful, the WAVE and the antenna tower icon will disappear on the LCD.
Important: Do not perform any button or switch operation while a signal reception operation is in progress. You can activate a reception operation manually at any time by pressing the WWVB SEARCH button. Of course, if time signal reception fails, you can also cancel the radio reception and set the time completely manually.
What are the advantages of this atomic digital clock?
As the picture shows, this atomic digital clock not only looks fashionable, but also has multiple functions and display modes. It has the same basic time display (hour, minute, second) as ordinary digital clocks, however, it is an atomic clock too, so it has more accurate time than ordinary digital clocks. In addition, you can check the Calendar and indoor Temperature at any time.At the same time, you can choose the time display in 12/24 hours mode and the temperature display in Fahrenheit/Celsius mode, it depends on your mood. More importantly, according to your actual situation, you can choose the Time Zone (PST, MST, CST, EST) you need and whether to enable Daylight Saving Time. Once you press the DST on, it will adjust to Daylight Saving Time automatically. Last but not least, it's also an Alarm Clock (last for 2 minutes) that we use every day. No matter where you put it, it's all right. Whether in the office, home or any other place, it will bring great convenience to your life.
How to set the time manually?
1. Press and hold the WWVB SEARCH button for 2 seconds until the antenna tower on the screen disappears. Cancel the radio wave receiving function.
2. Press and hold the SET button for 2 seconds, enter the manual setting mode, the current setting position will flicker to remind, select or change the settings through the UP or Down button.
Clear digital display.
This atomic clock features a clear and large 6.6-inch x 3.6-inch LCD display area to meet the visual needs, convenient for the elderly ,children and those with weak eyesight to see the time .Time, date and temperature are displayed accurately and reminded at any time,so it's suitable for travel, study or work schedule.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the clock movement itself be rotated to accommodate world time zones, or the hour hand be moved on its shaft |
Answer: | According to the owners manual The clock can be set to a time zone manually but the clock has 4 USA zones you can set it to as well as daylight time. The radio signal will adjust it daily. To me if you set it to say European Central Time and if your in the USA WWVB will set it back to a US time zone. If you want to set it to say a German time zone then buy a manual clock w/o a radio receiver for WWVB.That way the time zone you manually set will stay on the clock face. |
Question: | How long for it to set the time accurately? I set mine up but it is off a few minutes. Model 3129B |
Answer: | Mine set up accurately within 2 hours. However, I had to indicate the time zone with the slide indicator in the rear of the device. I have 3 other timers utilizing LaCrosse technology and one of them, 5 years old, takes approximately 30 hours or more on occasion. |
Question: | Is second hand sweeping |
Answer: | The “second hand” does not sweep ... it jumps from second to second. |
Question: | Is this clock pretty "silent |
Answer: | Great clock. I never here it and I never worry when the time changes - somehow it will reset the time. |

The movement is nearly silent due to the ultra-lightweight hands. The lightweight hands also extend the battery life, reducing the motor workload.

User questions & answers
Question: | does it make a difference if you put the batteries in the clock before the outside unit |
Answer: | I couldn’t get that part working on mine |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the clock |
Answer: | HI, Thank you for reaching out. The dimensions are 8.75" across x 7.9" tall x .5" wide. Thanks, The Clock Shop |
Question: | Our clock suddenly stopped showing correct outside temperature. Does anyone know how I can fix it |
Answer: | I have the same clock with the same problem. The sensor worked for a couple of weeks and then just stopped. Company has removed the ability to leave a message and does not answer this number. I have not been able to contact them or even find an address, email or physical, to contact them in writing. I contacted Sharp, because their name is on it, and they really don't care or have anything useful to offer other than the same phone number that hasn't been working since at least March 2020 when I first started trying to contact them. Don't waste time or money on the absolute garbage clock from Sharp, Model SPC1107. It's not really a Sharp product , and there's no way to ever get any help WHEN (not if) it fails. The only fix for this junk clock is to simply not own one. |
Question: | Does the time illuminate at night |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for reaching out. The Sharp Model SPC1107, is not backlight and does not illuminate at night. Thanks, The Clock Shop |
