User questions & answers

Question: weird Q: a recent outage trapped elder lady in her power recliner. can this be used
Answer: We have a dual electric recliner sofa. After being temporarily "trapped" during an power outage, we purchased the APC UPS, 600VA BE600M1 APC UPS Battery Backup system. This week we had a 3 day outage, and the UPS worked like a champ. A must have for anybody with electric recliner chair or sofa.
Question: How long will it power my system while the power is off
Answer: I had my desktop computer, 2 monitors, and my modem/router combo plugged into the ups battery power. It lasted less than 20 minutes when the power went out, and there was no additional warning when the battery was about to shut off. It just had this intermittent double beep for about 15- 20 minutes, then bang, everything off. Pretty disappointed. I guess you get what you pay for.
Question: How often does the battery need to be replaced
Answer: I have had APC batteries last 7-8 years, the shortest was 13 months (12-month warranty, figures!). I have bought replacement batteries from other vendors, don't last at all. I had a beautiful APOC SUA1500, Batteries Plus sold me 2 x SLA batteries duct taped together (yes, literally) and they were NOT made for a backup power suppl;y as they stated, leaked, corroded the entire inside of my very expensive unit! I certainly regret that decision! Batteries Plus said they had the APC batteries, but when I got to the store they did not, ordering them, would take a long time, so I tried their option - will NEVER shop at Batteries Plus again! Just yesterday I had one APC battery die. Bought new unit Dec 17, 2017, today is March 31, 2020. Just over 3 years, their average. No complaints.
Question: Does it have ethernet ports
Answer: No, and generally you'll want to avoid surge protectors or UPS's with built in surge protectors that have multiple ports (i.e. coaxial, Ethernet, phone) since these devices turn on at different voltage levels. So once a surge comes in on the LINE (HOT) side of the AC outlet and the voltage has reached a certain level, the surge will be directed to both the NEUTRAL and the SAFETY GROUND, but as soon as that happens, some of the surge makes it's way into the COAX, ETHERNET, and PHONE ports and if you have something plugged into those ports then it goes into the devices. A recent study (see: http://incompliancemag.com/article/lightning-surge-damage-to-ethernet-and-pots-ports-connected-to-inside-wiring/) confirms this. The best place to secure PHONE, and COAX connections is where they enter the house and where they can have a short (less than 10 foot connection to a buried GROUND ROD). If you secure phone & coax at the service entrance and protect your electronics with Type 3 Surge Protectors you won't need to secure the Ethernet connections. Also, it's not a good idea to rely on the Surge Protector inside a UPS as those have a higher clamping voltage generally in the 650-800 Volt range and that means until the voltage reaches 800 volts, your electronics is getting zapped. You can't plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector into an existing MOV based surge protector for compliance (safety) issues, but you can plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector or an MOV surge protector into a Series Mode filter since the filter does not rely on sacrificial MOV's. The Series Mode filter starts to work at 121.4 VAC on a 120 VAC line and it totally eliminates the surge instead of diverting it and hoping the surge can make it's way back through your house wiring to the buried ground rod from the main electrical panel.

User questions & answers

Question: If the input/output voltage for the addon battery pack is 12vdc, could a deep cycle be used by the unit in theory? The packs that power it are simply sealed wet cells anyway
Answer: To a different APC model, I tried 2 deep cycle gel-cells that overloaded the charging unit and resulted in a fire. As FNC said, the inverter cannot handle the load. APC does make devices to which external APC batteries can be added, not cheap though. APC also has a 2200 watt unit that plugs into a normal 15A 110 volt socket.
Question: How long can the battery keep on a 800 watt machine when the power is off
Answer: IT has 2 of 12V batteries hooked in series to make a 24V power supply. If you run using a steady half the rated wattage (433 watts) it will last about 30 minutes. But wattage consumption on most electronics is difficult to measure. A device may pull 40W at one moment and 400W at another. No chart or list will be correct for your equipment. APC also likes to make you think it will last longer by giving you best times possible. You should buy a wattage meter (under $25 generally) and measure the actual equipment you are using. Get the peak VA value used. Double that value and buy a UPS based on that doubled value. If you use a UPS backup regularly at any more than 50% of its rating, you'll have very miniscule times for it to keep things running and will be replacing batteries more frequently. Buy the biggest UPS you can afford if you want more time. Also only with this BR1500G you can add the supplemental pack which adds 4 more batteries to the original 6. The supplemental pack triples your up time. I run about 400W on a computer, 2 monitors, a printer, an LED TV, a high speed modem/router, a TIVO, a DVD player and a small LED light. Using the BR1500G and its supplemental pack, I get about 30-45 minutes with all this stuff running. But note I'm only using about half the rated wattage. I'd only get 1/3rd that amount of time with the BR1500G alone. I have 2 3D printers. Each one has its own APC BR1500G UPS and stays up about 45 minutes when power fails. You can never get too big of a UPS (except maybe for your unit's weight and physical size). Buy as large as you can afford to and you will be less likely to be disappointed. Also never daisy chain them together or use extension cords or plugs without the earth ground 3rd prong. These units will conduct huge amounts of current and will get very warm when discharging or charging. Leave them charging all the time. Don't unplug them or let them discharge often or you'll be replacing batteries more often. These are for short duration power outages. They are not meant to substitute as a generator to power devices. Never hook high wattage appliances like microwaves or refrigerators or washer dryers to them. That will damage your units.
Question: Description says surge protection is rated at 355 joules -- not much protection at that low rate. Is this correct? Thanks
Answer: You are correct. APC's site lists it at 354 joules. That is pretty low compared to a good power strip at nearly 10 times that rating. If you live in an area with surge problems (i.e. lightning), then you could plug the UPS into a good power strip first ... or rely on APC's connected equipment protection warranty.
Question: What kind of audible alarm does this unit have? Is it a simple beep and it over, or is it like a screeching banshee chasing its prey
Answer: It is a simple beep, easily silenced with a touch of a button. I've been using it in a 5th wheel as I travel and has been very reliable, especially in parks where power is not super reliable.

Question: How long does the battery last
Answer: I just purchased mine but from past experiences it should last 5 years and you can use it without a battery but without the software or battery back up.
Question: How long will the 425 model run a 5 watt device
Answer: My UPS 650 software says I have up to 35 minutes when hooked up to a desktop monitor and modem. I would think the 425 would be 20 minutes or less if the same power consumption is demanded. 5 watts isn't much, so it should last longer.
Question: There really has been no direct answer to the question about disabling the alarm (forget installing software). Is there a way by "holding" the button
Answer: If you read the manual they make available on this page for the 600AH batteries and up, you will see that you CAN TURN OFF ALL ALARMS! I would not recommend turning off the LOW BATTERY alarm, but you can turn that off too! Not sure about the 425 though. Though, you can look up the manuals for all of them as the not only make them available but ENCOURAGE you to read them BEFORE you buy them!! Kinda like that kind of information being there.

Manufacturer's Notice

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), American Power Conversion Corporation (APC), of West Kingston, R.I., is voluntarily recalling about 900,000 back-up power supply devices. These devices are primarily used to protect computers in case of a power failure. The power supply device can fail, causing the unit to overheat, which may pose a fire hazard to consumers. APC has received six reports of units overheating resulting in the melting of the unit's outer casing and three reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported. The recalled Back-UPS® CS Uninterruptible Power Supply devices include the Back-UPS CS350 and the Back-UPS CS 500 models. The model number can be found on the front of the unit, along with the words, "Back-UPS CS" and "APC." In addition, one of the following numbers shows up on the bar code label located on the bottom of the unit: BK350, BK500, BK500BLK. The recalled power supply devices also have one of the following serial numbers - AB0048 through AB0251, BB0104 through BB0251, and JB0125 through JB0251 - which can be found on the bottom of the unit. Units with an "R" at the end of the serial number within the above ranges are not part of this recall. Retailers, computer and electrical distributors, and catalogs nationwide sold the power supply devices from November 2000 through December 2002 for between $70 and $130.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with a battery, or do I need to purchase one separately
Answer: Thank you for reaching out to us. All of our UPS systems come with the internal battery. The BK350 does come with the battery.
Question: How long does the power last in hours
Answer: Power longevity is inversely proportional to the load plugged into the "UPS" function of the unit; the more load, computer, light etc the shorter the span of the power provided by the battery in the unit. With a desktop computer, monitor printer typical "life" is 7-10 minutes. this unit is designed to let you save any work being done then shut down your system normally.....................
Question: The device is identified as 350 va; so is it 350 watts? i want to purchase 2, one for each big screen 4k tv. you think it is large enough
Answer: The device is only 250W / 350VA. It's likely too small for a 4K tv.
Question: Always good for computer backup but I have cable phone service. Any issues with using it for phone modem power back up supply
Answer: No this unit should supply enough power to run a standard VOIP modem

User questions & answers

Question: Is this unit wall mountable? Does it have mounting slots on the bottom
Answer: This Unit can be mounted on the wall, the slot is located at the side of the unit
Question: What is the logic for using a nema 1-15 plug (no ground
Answer: Since Modem's, Routers on consumer side usually do no have a ground in the small adapter switched supply. A simple APC or Eaton etc. EMI filter + SurgeSupression power strip (2000J+) prior to this APC BGE70 will do just fine. A lot of older houses, actually before 1996 per NEMA guidelines at the time, 220/240V appliances are three wire, two hot and neutral (serves as Ground), so Gulf Breeze is incorrect. My home is a-typical, we have 4 wire to 208/240V appliances - two hot, neutral and a ground (current NEMA standard), but it is Wye configuration as my home is US 3-Phase, and the meter is 120V. It is not split-phase, the power company just happened to install a 1600KVA Transformer with 3 feed lines at 21KV each. This works great for what is was built for - powering a modem, router - basically that is it. If you want true Sine Wave, AVR (boost/sag) without using battery, surge prepare to shell out several hundred.
Question: Does this (model bge90m) produce a true sine wave output
Answer: No it does not.It produces a Square wave. This is a you get what you pay for. Tune Sine wave output is more expensive. MFG web site is http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-Connect-90-120V-Network-backup-USB-charging-ports/P-BGE90M
Question: When unit goes on battery, does the audible alarm continue to beep until AC power is restored
Answer: Funny how ppl dont get it: this is to be for emergencies, same for the bigger ones. One reasons being that most things like pc power supplies get destroyed (over time) by running on battery. This meant not be for an emergency, not to make up for your ares lack of stable power or your place missing a generator (if outages happen often). Sol to everyone whining about never buying a certain brand, ALL brands do it. and if you know how to use a screw driver it takes 2 min to remove the cover and cut one cable to the speaker.

User questions & answers

Question: What is height of apc ups 1350va
Answer: The dimensions of the unit are: 15.04 x 3.94 x 9.84 in The unit is 3 inches over 1 foot tall.
Question: will this unit help protect computers when you use power form a generator during black out
Answer: So if you are speaking of surge protection, yes. There Are outlets that are surge protection only and outlets that are surge protection plus backup. Once power is restored in any form, be it shore power or a generator the unit goes into surge protection mode only.
Question: does this device ship with a battery? I ass u me it does, but amazon site lists ups + batt when ordering, hence my stupid question
Answer: Yes your APC 1350 UPS comes with a battery installed. You will have to remove the battery to activate.
Question: How long does it last for surface pro
Answer: Too many variables to state exactly. The power supply of the SP4 is rated at 44 watts (per Microsoft). The BX1350M is rated at 67 minutes when producing 81 watts. (81 watts is as low as their graph goes). So I'd guess you'd get AT LEAST one hour and probably closer to two hours. But why? If your intent is to run the SP4 for extended periods without available household electricity, I'd look into an external auxiliary battery for the SP4, like this, or similar. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076P4P93T/ref=sxts_kp_bs_tr_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=8778bc68-27e7-403f-8460-de48b6e788fb&pd_rd_wg=cyIiK&pf_rd_r=XT94JPKRGSSAAA17GF2D&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B076P4P93T&pd_rd_w=mzAqP&pf_rd_i=surface%2Bpro%2B4%2Bexternal%2Bbattery&pd_rd_r=a0ab32b0-edab-4ea9-8db0-e3fe42472e39&ie=UTF8&qid=1541614343&sr=1&th=1#

User questions & answers

Question: what is the purpose of the battery connector
Answer: If you are referring to the triangular battery connector on the back of the unit, it allows you to disconnect the battery without opening the UPS. This should be done when shipping the unit, for example, or when you otherwise wish to prevent it from powering on while unplugged from line power.
Question: Is it too loud for leaving room
Answer: Actually it’s pretty much silent unless the power goes out - then it will beep to let you know it’s running on batteries. So, yes, you can have it in your living room without worry.
Question: Buenos días. me gustaría saber que voltaje de imput tiene.. es 220v o 110v? yo necesito 220v para paraguay
Answer: I don't speak Spanish but it's 110V
Question: Just bought apc 1500va. plugged one thing, a printer into it. upon printing it emits a grumble followed by screach that lasts the entire print time
Answer: You should not plug a laser printer in a UPS for battery backup. Look on the back of the UPS - if there are outlets that provide surge protection only, without battery backup, plug it in there. If no outlets on the UPS indicate that they are surge only, then don't plug it in!

User questions & answers

Question: how to reset it after the surge? it's not conducting power after the very first surge
Answer: Because this is a Z-Wave enabled device, it will add appropriately and can be controlled as a Dimmer by SmartThings, however it is not certified by SmartThings at this time (June 2, 2017). There are community provided device handlers available for most Z-Wave products on SmartThings Community board that will offer advanced functionalities available today, as well, we are currently working with SmartThings to ensure all of our switches and dimmers are certified. We hope to have this fully supported in the near future. You can periodically check the following website: https://www.smartthings.com/products/-/filter/brands/ge for fully certified GE Devices on the SmartThings platform.
Question: What is the measured depth when pluged in
Answer: Yes, this will work with the Wink 2 Hub, however Wink has not integrated the advanced features of the GE 26933 at this time. This means that you will be able to turn the Motion Dimmer on and off, as well as dim remotely, however you cannot adjust the Occupancy/Vacancy settings, timeouts, etc. through the hub. All Advanced functions will have to be adjusted through the button press controls that are detailed in the user manual included with the product.
Question: is this UL certified
Answer: C by GE Smart Switches will work through wifi but will need to be connected to our C by GE app first. The Smart Switches will not work with Smartthings.
Question: Does this surge protector plug in directly into outlet
Answer: The wired switch will control other bulbs besides C by GE, but this switch, because it is wire-free does not have the capability of controlling anything except C by GE lights and light strips and it cannot be added to an outside app, it will only work in the C by GE app.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the smc 1000 power 2 router, 24 port switch, and a watchguard security device and nvr
Answer: There is no fan on my BX1500M. Is quiet on Utility power and only a very low hum on battery power if you place your ear close to it.
Question: Can you use the network connection to have several computers monitor the ups and gracefully shut down? powerchute seems to only use the usb
Answer: The 1500VA/900watt rating has absolutely NOTHING to do with the run time. It is a rating of the maximum output level for a very short period of time. The BX1500M uses a 12 Volt 9 Ampere hour battery that means it stores 108 watt/hours of energy. The inverter (the electronic circuit that converts the stored 12 Volt DC power to 117 Volt AC power) is far from 100% efficient, and will not operate if the battery is near complete discharge, so the actual stored energy output for this device is 68 minutes at a 100 watt load. At the full load output of 900 watts the UPS will provide power for about 5 to 6 minutes before the battery is depleted and it shuts down.
Question: dose va mean volts * amps ? so wattage
Answer: I did the same thing on my first unit, didn't plug in the battery. Went for a long time because the rest of the unit was working ok and I WAS SURE it would work if needed. It never would switch to safe shut down mode. FINALLY I opened the unit and found the battery disconnected ! Will make sure the next unit will have the battery hooked up as per directions.
Question: what is the difference with the SMT1500C model which is more expensive
Answer: It is in between. Though not pure sine wave, it has many little steps, vs Modified (modified square wave) which is simply 0 + 0 - 0 + 0 - 0 +... (3 status levels) A very good explanation and comparison graphs are shown at: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/812247-best-ups/ Hope this helps.
