14 best furnace humidifiers
Furnace humidifiers, also known as whole-house humidifiers or central humidifiers, are devices that are installed as part of a home's HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system to add moisture to the air inside a house. These humidifiers serve to increase indoor humidity levels, which can be beneficial for several reasons. Here's what you should know about furnace humidifiers:
Installation: Furnace humidifiers are typically installed directly into the HVAC system of a home. They are connected to the furnace or air handler, allowing them to distribute moisture throughout the entire house via the ductwork.
Types: There are different types of furnace humidifiers, including flow-through, drum, and steam humidifiers. Each type has its own method of adding moisture to the air.
Flow-Through Humidifiers: These humidifiers use a constant flow of water to saturate a special pad or evaporator pad.Warm air from the furnace blows over the pad, evaporating the water and adding moisture to the air.
Drum Humidifiers: Drum humidifiers use a rotating drum that turns through a water reservoir. The warm air from the furnace passes over the wet drum, causing water to evaporate and humidify the air.
Steam Humidifiers: Steam humidifiers use an electrical heating element to boil water and create steam, which is then introduced into the airflow of the HVAC system to increase humidity levels.
Benefits: Furnace humidifiers offer several benefits:
Improved Comfort: They help maintain optimal indoor humidity levels, preventing dry air that can cause discomfort, such as dry skin, dry throat, and static electricity.
Health Benefits: Proper humidity levels can reduce the risk of respiratory issues and allergies, as dry air can exacerbate these conditions.
Preservation: Furnace humidifiers can help protect wood floors, furniture, and other items in your home from damage caused by excessively dry air.
Energy Efficiency: Maintaining adequate humidity levels can help you feel warmer at lower temperatures, potentially reducing heating costs.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the effective operation of furnace humidifiers. This includes cleaning or replacing humidifier pads or components, checking for mold or mineral buildup, and adjusting settings based on seasonal changes.
Humidistat Control: Many furnace humidifiers are equipped with a humidistat, which is a device that measures the humidity level in your home and adjusts the humidifier's operation accordingly to maintain a desired humidity level.
In conclusion, furnace humidifiers are integral components of HVAC systems that add moisture to indoor air, providing comfort and potential health benefits. They come in various types, offer several advantages, and require regular maintenance to function optimally. Properly maintained furnace humidifiers can help create a more comfortable and healthy indoor environment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with every thing need for a typical installation |
Answer: | are Filters included |
Question: | I have a 2600 sqft home built in 1989, and am considering getting the Aprilaire 500 vs the 600. Is that a wise choice |
Answer: | It has four filters in the bottom of the unit. They do look like “wicks” I don’t see a separate wick of any other kind. |
Question: | can the humidifier bypass duct be on either side ?? The pictures all show it "by passing" to the left - i need it to the right |
Answer: | I am not mamiliarnwith that model |
Question: | How often do you have to buy new parts? Filters? Etc. And what do they run you each year |
Answer: | There should be 4 tabs on each lower housing (the housing that hold the filters), and there should also be 4 corresponding slots on each top filter housing. The lower housing should have two tabs sticking straight up in the front, and two tabs sticking horizontally out the back. The two tabs in the back are just flat tabs, and they are supposed to just slide into the two slots in the back of the top housing. The two front tabs on the lower housing are shaped such that they will "snap" into the two slots in the front of the top housing. The tabs on the back of the lower housing are used to align the top housing with the lower housing, and to help keep it in place. Check to see if the lower housings on your unit have the tabs in the back, and if the top housings have the slots for them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My 360 shuts down, goes off, when I turn the rheostat above 10. I need more humidit. I want about 35%. What is wrong |
Answer: | This is a passive humidifier. That means that it requires the heat generated by the furnace in order to fully vaporize the water. Even so, it isn't very effective at humidifying a home. A huge amount of water goes down the drain in comparison to what goes into the air in the form of humidity. If you want real humidity you should look into an active humidifier...one that generates steam and injects it into the air. |
Question: | Water flowing out of bottom of humidifier, not down tube |
Answer: | Sounds like too much water flow. Drain tube should show a small amount of water flow. Make sure drain tube is not stopped up. Then, You might try throttling down the water valve feeding the unit. |
Question: | Is this he360a the same as the he |
Answer: | I can not be certain what changes were made, other than the name. I received two HE360a devices from Lowe's and each failed within 3 weeks of use. Lowe's graciously accepted them back and I trust returned them to Honeywell. Honeywell 'advanced customer service' had no explanation other than to say my house current must have been causing the failures. I would stay away from the Honeywell product. I will be installing Aprilaire product in the near future. |
Question: | Does this come with a humidistat |
Answer: | Yes. You'll get better results if you mount the humidistat in your living space (usually next to the thermostat) than in the duct. You want to sense the humidity where you are, not in the duct. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I disconnect G from furnace board and plug straight into the model 60 control? Also can I use the transformer already there |
Answer: | Yes, you are partially correct. The actions are thus; Remove the thermostat "G" wire from the furnace terminalstrip and wire it to "G" on the Model 60 control.* Wire "Gf" on the Model 60 to "G" on the furnace terminalstrip. Also, you may use the 24v supply on the furnace control board, if it rated for enough amperage. If not, wire in the external transformer.Check your furnace manual. |
Question: | If I use the wiring schematics listed on the manual, will that turn on the blower and not the furnace? Or what wiring schematic do I need |
Answer: | If you use the schematic listed for "Automatic" operation (i.e. intercept the "G" wire between the thermostat and the furnace, putting the new humidistat in between) then this unit will be able to use the furnace blower without firing the furnace. Tapping into the hot water supply (instead of cold) is recommended if you use this feature. My 700 is installed this way and works very well in this configuration. |
Question: | What effect does the humidifier have on furnace filters when installed on the cold air return? Can you use an electrostatic filter |
Answer: | For any humidifier to work at its best and quickly increase the humidity to desired level, it needs to be on hot air side after your furnace. Hot air captures maximum humidity compared to cold air. |
Question: | exactly how does it work |
Answer: | Imagine a screen door with a breeze blowing through it.Now take a hose and dribble water along the top of the screen. Surface tension will make the water fan out and coat the screen, however some water will find its way to the ground. Now that breeze coming through the screen door will evaporate some of the water and become more humid. Crud is less likely to build up on the screen because it is being constantly washed by he water that makes it to the bottom. So that's "exactly" how this humidifier works. The big advantage is that all the carbonates and fine solids don't build up and clog everything, the disadvantage is that the humidifier wastes water since the excess "wash" water goes down the drain. The humidifier consists of a fan that blows air through a special "screen" over which water is dribbled whenever the furnace is heating and the fan is running. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the 280a be mounted on a 12 inch duct |
Answer: | This will not fit on a 12in duct, product dimensions are 16.25 x 18.5 x 9.75. |
Question: | Is this safe for uv light |
Answer: | I was looking for the answer to that also, I have a home that is almost 100 years old and I just recently updated to the Honeywell Home UV kit on my HVAC with the Honeywell Home T9 thermostat and 4 sensors in my home. I have been thinking of adding this to make the house feel warmer. So any information would be greatly appreciated. |
Question: | I get 36% when I have it set to 60%. Any thoughts of wisdom |
Answer: | The humidity stat setting is when it will turn off not what it will necessarily achieve. If the furnace ran long enough you may be able to get to 60 but as others noted you probably will only achieve more of a differential from outside to inside humidity. |
Question: | Does it require a floor drain |
Answer: | I wouldn't say require, but it needs to drain into something. I know of someone who uses a home Depot bucket and just dumps when needed until they route to there floor drain. But the water needs to go somewhere |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | Mine says "Canada" |
Question: | does the price 630 includes all the price of accessories |
Answer: | Yes everything is included . except 15 amp circuit breaker. 14 ga. Wire. for electric connection . 18 ga. thermostat wire for humidistat (which is included ). If you are mounting the unit farther away than 5' from return duct you will need longer steam hose available through honeywell in 15' piece. |
Question: | Does the unit require 220Vac for the most efficiency or does 110Vac provide the best efficiency |
Answer: | There is a jumper in the unit that allows for either 110 or 220. It's easy to switch. Certainly the unit delivers more steam with 220, but with 110 the unit is way more efficient than the old TruSteam units. I rum my units on 110 and they work very well. |
Question: | What should the normal level of water be in the canister |
Answer: | mine the level varies depending where in the on cycle it is |

User questions & answers
Question: | My thermostat is only used for heating the house and only has 2 wires, a red and white. Can i still use this ecobee |
Answer: | If you have a really old 2-wire system, one that does NOT have modern solid state controls, then Ecobee won't work right off the shelf, even with their 2-3 wire power conversion module. These heating plants predate the 1980s and use "dry contact" thermostats. You can make it work if you install a 24v isolation relay. Ecobee outlines the procedure on their web site, but it takes some basic electrical wiring knowledge. I'm not sure if you can use the 2-wire conversion module with an isolation relay - it should be possible somehow or other. If you have a third wire running to the thermostat (it's often there) then you should use it to run 24V to the Ecobee, and ignore the conversion module. |
Question: | Is there a provision to bypass the 'auto off' motion sensor so that my dogs don't suffer from the heat when I'm out |
Answer: | Yes- you can disable the Smart Home/Away feature under the "Sensors" section of the interface, so that the thermostat will follow only the schedule/preset temperatures. In my case, I disabled it because I wanted the opposite functionality (I didn't want the system turning on if I stopped at home for a hour over lunch). Note that the "Follow Me" feature is a separate setting (found in the Sensors section as well) that allows the system to track where you are in the house and attempt to heat/cool that part of the house closer to your desired setpoint. |
Question: | Does the main thermostat have a sensor for the first floor? Or is the white sensor needed for that floor? Is the black hub a sensor |
Answer: | Main thermostat and white (remote) includes a temperature sensor and a motion sensor. First, you don't have to use the remote sensor. Second, if you use the remote sensor, the main sensor will combine the input of both (main and remote) temperature sensors and based on the amount of time spent in each area using the motion sensor. If motion is detected more near the main and less near the remote (as a %), then the main temperature will weigh heavier than the remote. As well, you do not need to use remotes and can be assigned to work during selected schedules only. It's quite amazing, but I haven't used them on my system yet. I figured I would learn the rest of the system before I introduced them. |
Question: | is this a different model than the ecobee3 that is slightly less expensive? Also if wifi is out can you control it fully manually |
Answer: | Yes, this is a different model then the ecobee3 lite. The ecobee will still be able to function as a thermostat and talk to the sensors, if your wifi goes out. You can still manually control your heating and cooling at your ecobee without wifi. |
Question: | Compatible with alexa? do i have to buy nexia bridge for it to work |
Answer: | For the thermostat alone, no nexia bridge is needed. |
Question: | Can you set Temperature limits on this thermostat |
Answer: | Yes you can. |
Question: | The connection key to setup wifi will not work so i am not able to connect it to wifi. anyone know the fix |
Answer: | Must use your phone and the app. |
Question: | Is this thermostat compatible with the xr624 connection |
Answer: | Yes, it is compatible. The XR724 replaces XL624. |
Product description
Atomizing humidification sprays a fine mist of water directly into the warm air supply duct. The water is evaporated by the warm air from the furnace. The humidistat and built-in temperature switch automatically control the humidifier to ensure that the proper amount of humidity is achieved. The built-in temperature switch prevents operation if the temperature in the warm air duct is not high enough to ensure effective evaporation. The universal humidistat, installed either on the wall or in the cold air return duct, turns on the unit when the humidity level in the home is below the set-point. Air stream. Not recommended for heat pumps or systems where supply air is less than 120°f.
User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this unit to maintain humidity during the summer when we run only the a/c |
Answer: | In summer time you dont need to humidity the air. Please check the humidity records in your area. Most people use dehumidifier to remove humidity from air. |
Question: | I have reverse osmosis tank 50ft away. Would pressure drop of 50ft line make unit not work |
Answer: | I would not recommend R.O. water as a supply. It is know to corrode copper line and brass fittings from the inside out due to the water being so pure it actually leaches minerals out of the metals. Plus the pressure tanks are usually only filled to to 10-12 psi. |
Question: | How much will it boost the humidity |
Answer: | If your furnace runs a lot it should add as much as you want. My house is pretty efficient so I have to go the the larger nozzle. If you know your run time there is a chart in the manual under manufactures web site that says how much it will add based on water pressure and run time. Basically around 3/4 gal per run hour of your furnace while its heating. |
Question: | does it come with the humidistat |
Answer: | Yes it does come with a dial type humidistat it works well with my system |
Product description
Aprilaire introduced the first evaporative humidifier for forced air furnace systems back in 1954. Since that time, Aprilaire continues to lead the industry in whole home humidification systems – including steam humidifiers. Aprilaire steam humidifiers use electrode technology and are simple to install, operate, and maintain. With electrode technology, electrical current flows between submerged electrodes, resistance of the water to the electric current heats the water. The submerged electrodes are found in a replaceable canister. At the end of a humidifier season, the canister – including the electrodes, is replaced. No cleaning, no scrubbing, simply replace the canister and you’re ready for the next humidifier season. Electrode technology requires impurities in the water to promote the transfer of electricity. For this reason, water filtration is not required with electrode technology, minimizing the complexity of the installation and on-going operating costs. This unit will operate with water hardness between 3 and 36 grains – a very wide range. If reverse osmosis or deionized water is present, plumb the steam humidifier to a water line before the water flows through the reverse osmosis or deionization equipment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to run the Humidifier when the furnace fan is in the ON or when the furnace burner is on or not |
Answer: | If properly connected the humidifier will work when furnace is in the heat mode and fan is running. When fan kicks on in heat mode the solenoid opens and allows water to run down the evaporator. |
Question: | when i open my humidifier , i get water on the floor. why |
Answer: | Water enters the top of the humidifier and flows down through the water panel. All residual unvaporated water flows out of the drain hole in the bottom of the humidifier. |
Question: | Does the unit include the evaporator pad |
Answer: | Yes, it does come with a single pad. |
Question: | does this unit come with filter |
Answer: | No filter. It has plates to allow for water to be soaked into and allow the hot air to blow over the plates. Its a good unit depends on how big a home you need to humidify. The plastic label identifying the unit drops out when its been installed for a while and leaves a big hole. A piece of aluminum cut to size and placed in the slots where the plastic label went solves the problem of the hole. Otherwise i'd buy another but would prefer a larger capacity for the same footprint. |

Answer: | Because it is an evaporative humidifier, the air from the top will be cooler than the room air by a degree or two. It should not affect the temperature of the room unless it is very small. |
Question: | Does it cause white dust on furniture |
Answer: | No, never any over-humidification. On rainy days, mine never comes on. Depending on outside temps, my humidity levels are running between 38% and 44%. |
Question: | Does this humidifier have an air or water filter |
Answer: | We live in Southwest Colorado. Our house in the winter is about 23% humidity. When we use our wood burning stove to heat it drops even lower. I have put two of these units in our space which is about 1,600 SF. With both of them on high, we can raise the humidity up to 30% when the wood burning stove is off. With it on, the high 20's. However and it's a big however, on high the noise is loud and you would not want to be in the space, so we only keep it on high if we are out of the house or overnight outside the bedroom. We have one upstairs in the loft and it's okay to keep on medium when you are downstairs. When I am in the same room as the unit, then I prefer low, which does not do very much, but it's better then nothing. Low is quit enough to use in a room you are sleeping in if it's not close and I am a very light sleeper. In our basement which stays more humid and where we use a gas stove only to heat, it is doable to bring up the humidity to 45% if run on high/medium when not in the space. TIP! When sleeping in the same room as the unit, noise occurs when the unit releases air and water "drubs, drubs", into the base (especially in the beginning when the the furniture, carpets, etc. are absorbing the moisture. It make take a bit of time for that to occur and then you may see a spike up, so give it a week to see what happens. Also if you have the windows open, which I suggest you do for air quality at least a couple of hours a day then that will alter humidity as well) . This sound kept me up all night as it happened every 20 minutes or so. The SOLUTION is to fill the base almost to the top, but not quite, so that it does not spill when replacing the tank and then empty the rest of the water out of the tanks and replace. Then put on low and you will get humidity all night without the bubbles sound! This was passed on to me by a friend and it really works. Great unit! |
Question: | Is there a user manual for this item? There was not one in the box |
Answer: | I"ve had one of these for 20+ years. Hard water where I live. So I began simply soaking my filters in hot water in my kitchen sink once per week. That does take some of the hardness from the water out of the filters. That trick allows me to use my filters almost a good 2 months. Once they become too 'hard', they just do not filter the water as they should. Soaking does help, vs buying filters monthly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this unit come with a humidistat |
Answer: | It's been quite a while since I installed, and can't remember if it comes with a humidistat or not. I wired mine into our existing Honeywell smart thermostat, which has accomodations for a humidifier. However, the "includes" statement in the description says it includes a "SK0-0055-001 Manual 24VAC humidistat", and I seem to remember that one was included (but not used). |
Question: | What size home (sqft) is this unit recommended for |
Answer: | Not sure.. but it is doing a good job in a 1500 sq ft house with a finished basement.. |
Question: | can this be installed on the inlet side of a downflow heater? and if so before the filter or after |
Answer: | my unit was set up on the intake sideof the duct before the burner, and the flexible tube was attached to the duct after the burner section. |
Question: | Will this unit will mount into a hole from a skuttle 2001humidifier unit. I’m not super thrilled with what I have hoping this is an upgrade |
Answer: | my experience was replacing a Lennox unit which was dimensionally close in size...had to modify the hole by removing approx. a (1 inch x (6) inch piece of the furnace sheet metal...not to difficult with the correct tool!! Good luck |

This genuine Aprilaire replacement water panel is the backbone of your Aprilaire humidifier. The heavy-duty aluminum mesh frame holds its shape over the life of the water panel as the porous ceramic-type coating absorbs water and maintains the proper level of hydration to support the evaporation process. Water is vaporized as air warmed by the furnace passes over the water panel. The humidified air is carried through the house through the air ducts. Water Panel Evaporators are the heart of your humidifier and the component which generates the important humidity to keep you comfortable during the heating season. The water panel slides into the scale control insert and the water distribution tray sits across the top of the panel.
