Answer:	No, the candles just fit into holes in the tops of the cupcakes (as do a couple of the rubbery pieces) and the other wooden pieces are held in place by the candles. To be honest, I think this is a poorly designed product, as much as I usually like Hape toys. The holes in the cakes are too shallow, so the candles wobble and fall out. Plus I dislike that the pieces aren't all wood.
