14 best tumbling media for rocks
Tumbling media for rocks is an essential component of the rock tumbling process, commonly used in rock tumblers, which are popular tools for hobbyists and educational purposes. Rock tumblers are machines designed to smooth and polish rough stones, turning them into polished gemstones or decorative items.Tumbling media plays a crucial role in achieving the desired results in this process. Here's what you need to know about it:
Purpose: Tumbling media is used in rock tumblers to facilitate the grinding, smoothing, and polishing of rocks. It helps to abrade the rough surfaces of rocks, removing imperfections and creating a shiny, polished finish.
Types of Media: There are different types of tumbling media available, each designed for specific stages of the tumbling process. The most common types include:
- Silicon Carbide Grit: Used for the initial stages of tumbling to shape and smooth rough rocks.
- Ceramic Media: Used for medium stages of tumbling to further refine the surfaces.
- Polishing Powders: Used in the final stages to achieve a high-gloss, polished appearance.
Sizes: Tumbling media comes in various sizes, ranging from coarse to fine grits, and different shapes, such as cones, cylinders, or spheres. The choice of media size depends on the desired finish and the type of rock being tumbled.
Composition: Tumbling media is typically made of abrasive materials like silicon carbide or aluminum oxide. These abrasives help wear down the rough surfaces of rocks and remove imperfections.
Use with Water: To achieve the desired results, tumbling media is used in conjunction with water and the rocks inside the tumbler. The water acts as a lubricant and helps in the grinding and polishing process.
Duration: The tumbling process can take several weeks, with the rocks and media continuously agitated in the tumbler. Over time, the rocks become smoother and more polished with each cycle.
Safety: When using tumbling media, it's essential to follow safety precautions, including wearing protective eyewear and avoiding inhaling any dust generated during the tumbling process.
Maintenance: Tumbling media can wear out over time, so it may need to be replaced periodically. Regularly clean the media to remove debris and maintain its effectiveness.
Variations: There are variations of tumbling media designed for specific purposes, such as pre-polishing or final polishing. These variations may have different grit sizes and compositions to suit particular needs.
Tumbling media for rocks is a fundamental component of the rock tumbling hobby and educational activities, allowing enthusiasts to transform rough, unattractive stones into beautiful, polished gems and decorative items. The choice of media and the tumbling process itself can be a rewarding and educational experience for individuals of all ages.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this grit in my ultra-vibe |
Answer: | The pellets are used for filler in the tumbler so that the tumbling action between the rocks and grit work more effectively. |
Question: | What are the pellets for and how do you use them |
Answer: | Yes it can. Just skip the coarse step as vibratory polishers work much faster than tumblers and will not round the rocks as well as a rotary tumbler. I always do two to 4 weeks of coarse in a rotary then finish in a vibratory. |
Question: | can this be used with viberating rock tumbler |
Answer: | Yes, it does. Use 2 Tbs. grit for every pound of rock for Steps 1 & 2. Use 1 Tbs. grit for every pound of rock for Steps 3 and 4. If you have alot of empty space in the tumbler, use the ceramic cylinders to get the tumbler to about 2/3 full. Instructions are included with the kit. |
Question: | Does this work in hobby rock tumblers? If so, how much grit do you add per cycle |
Answer: | These pins are attracted to magnets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 1.5lbs bag for just one 3lbs barrel or is it enough ceramic material for two 3lbs barrels |
Answer: | I only use this in a rotary tumbler. They do wear, but very slowly. I have about six months of run time on my current set and expect it to outlast my tumbling career. |
Question: | Is it ok to use these with a rotary tumbler |
Answer: | I looked it up. They're made in the USA at Polyplastics in Farmington Hills, Michigan |
Question: | Where are this made |
Answer: | The ceramic is generally used to cushion the stones or glass, in your case, during tumbling. It will have some abrasive action but it is very smooth. You will probably also need some silicone carbide grit along with the ceramic to smooth out the glass. If it is rough, you would start with Stage 1 or Stage 2 grit, then go to Stages 3 or 4. If it is already smooth, you can start with Stage 3 and finish with Stage 4. If you want a rougher frosted look, don't use Step 4. Run the tumbler 2-3 days at each step and check whether you are getting the effect you like. You can use the ceramic during every step. Just rinse it off the grit between stages. Hope that helps. |
Question: | Sea glass artists create by dumping refuse into water ways allowing mother nature to naturally shape/polish glass in a non-gmo organic way. Can this |
Answer: | Yes I guess. They are very tiny pellets and wash up nice for reuse. |

Ceramic Rock Tumbling Media
Our non-abrasive ceramic tumbling media is perfect for protecting and cushioning fragile stones while tumbling. Also, use to fill your barrel to the recommended 2/3 level, carry grit & polish, improve tumbling action and quiet the tumbling process. Recommended over plastic filler media for vibratory tumblers.
Since ceramic rinses clean of grit, you can use the same batch of ceramic through all the stages. Just rinse off between stages, along with the rocks.
Do not use fresh cylinders when polish tumbling in Stages 3 and 4. Run the cylinders in the tumbler with coarser grit for a day or so to smooth off the edges. Preferably, use the fresh cylinders as fill for Stages 1 & 2 so they will have lost their edges by Stage 3.
Polly Plastics offers premium grit and filler materials for rock tumbling enthusiasts.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this 5lb bag fill a 2 liter bottle? I would like to know the volume it takes up |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this media non-abrasive |
Answer: | The large is used as a filler and lasts longer than the small. The small ceramics are used for cushioning and helps improve the tumbling action. If you are looking for the benefits of both, then the mixed is what I would recommend. I typically use whatever I happen to grab - small, large, or mixed and have been happy with the results on the agates I tumble. |
Question: | Is the purpose of using mixed sized media to displace more volume? (Rather than just using all small sized media |
Answer: | Yes, Just wash thoroughly with your rocks between steps to make sure all grit is removed. Some people do have a separate set of ceramic media to use strictly for polishing, but I have not felt there has been a need to this. |
Question: | Can this mixture be used during all stages of tumbling, including polishing, or should plastic pellets be used for the last steps |
Answer: | These are all 304 stainless |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these be used in all 4 stages of rock tumbling |
Answer: | A bit rough for burnishing. Plastic pellets or rouge walnut shells or other plastic media products are better for burnishing. |
Question: | Is this recommended for the burnishing stage for a rotary tumbler |
Answer: | No, you want to use crushed walnut shells for reloading. |
Question: | for reloading |
Answer: | I wouldn't put new ceramic media into the polishing phase because it might scratch the polished rocks. I always keep some ceramic media that has been through a couple of cycles and has all the sharp edges worn down. I can use the worn media in the polishing phase and not have to worry about scratching the polished rocks. |
Question: | Can i use this product in polishing phase only |
Answer: | There is plenty ceramic pellets for 2, 3# barrels. Remember, when you load what ever you're tumbling, the barrels should be about half full. If not, add pellets to make up the difference. Wash and reuse the pellets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these help protect the more fragile stones? Some stones are snall and somewhat thin and have a tendency to splinter or break |
Answer: | Not 100% but they keep the stones from hitting each other real hard. |
Question: | I understand that I use grit with this, but do I still use water? Or does this replace the water allowing for a dry tumble |
Answer: | You still need to use water. |
Question: | Can this be used to give clean, rectangularly cut glass a "seaglass" look? It is a frosted look with edges that have been filed down. Thank you |
Answer: | The pellets will cushion the glass in the tumbling process, but you will need to add grit to help shape and round the edges of the glass. Hope that helps! |
Question: | What is used to give the stones a shiny finish |
Answer: | The shiny finish on stones is done during the polish stage, and the final polish is done during the "burnish" stage. Burnishing is done using, not grit, but soap. |
Product description
As recommended, the same pellets should be used throughout the tumbling process, all stages. That way, the pellet surface gets the same abrasion that the rocks do. If you used new pellets in later stages, they would be more abrasive and could actually work against the tumbling media you are using.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a vibrating polishing tumbler. I want to play/make sea glass. Can you recommend a medium that would be best |
Answer: | What medium is recommended to tumble glass to make sea glass |
Question: | I can't find the instructions? how much do i use and do i use the pellets with the grit |
Answer: | Instructions are included with all our grit kits but here is the recap. Start with Step 1 and proceed through Step 4. Use 2 Tbs. grit for every pound of rock for Steps 1 & 2. Use 1 Tbs. grit for every pound of rock for Steps 3 and 4. If you have alot of empty space in the tumbler, use pellets to get the tumbler to about 2/3 full. Cover the stones, grit and pellets with water. Run each step for 7 days. Rinse off the rocks between each Step. Do not use the plastic pellets in different steps because they can have grit embedded in them. Save them for your next tumble and use them in the same Stage as you did in the previous tumble. |
Question: | Can the plastic pellets be used for burnishing |
Answer: | Yes, I have read where people can use the plastic pellets along with soap and water to burnish tumbled rocks. The main thing about burnishing is the soap which cleans pretty much all the grit from the rocks and gives them a nice shine. The only thing I know about the plastic pellets, however, is that you should use fresh pellets for each phase of your tumbling because the various grits can get stuck in the pellets and end up scratching your finished product. So if you use fresh pellets in the burnishing phase it will help cushion the rocks while the soap cleans them. |
Question: | Approximately how much grit is in each bag? 1 cup |
Answer: | Stage 1 is about 1 cup, Stage 2 is about 1-1/4 cup, Stage 3 is about 3/4 cup and Stage 4 is about 3/4 cup. In addition to the weight differences, the difference in density affects the volume also. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the pellets for and how do you use them |
Answer: | The stones are a mix from all over and of small size and low quality. I suggest a google search of rock for tumbling to get either specific stones or a mix plus instructions on how to get best results. If you are just starting agate and jaspers polish well. |
Question: | What is the abrasive material |
Answer: | To attach a gemstone to the ring and earrings, have an adult help with gluing these accessories. We recommend a hot glue gun or an all-purpose adhesive sealant that can be purchased online or at your local hardware store. |
Question: | Are the rocks included |
Answer: | Is the tumbler broken or are you asking why you can’t set it for more than 10 days? None of the 4 steps take more than 10 days generally speaking. If you happen to be tumbling really hard stuff you can just add days as you go. However. If you are saying the machine stopped working and is broken ~ Return it |
Question: | Are all 5 grits included in this order |
Answer: | 1/2 tablespoon of grit per pound of rock |
- TWO LBS. Clear poly pellets. Use to fill tumbler to improve tumbling action.
- PREMIUM High Impact Polypropylene. Stands up to rough tumbling action. Protect and cushion fragile stones and reduce tumbling noise.
- Non-toxic, non-static and non-residue pellets are dryable and easy to reuse – float to the top for easy cleaning.
- Made in the USA. No scrap, imported or re-processed, used plastic.
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be reused multiple times, or does it break down pretty quickly? Would like to use it for filler with mixed rocks in my rock tumbler |
Answer: | I have successfully reutilized Poly Pellets numerous times. I Make sure to rinse them really well and let them Dry before storing them in a plastic jar marked for that step of tumbling and only reuse the pellets in the same step. Your rock results come out better that way and the pellets seem to hold up longer. Of course the more abrasive the step, the less longer the pellets last. As I rotate my pellets up a step as they begin to shrink in size from use, I always save my new pellets for the fourth and of fifth (burnishing) steps. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Would this polish for Aluminium objects well |
Answer: | The pellets don't actually polish but work as an aid when tumbling with the polishing medium. |
Question: | How many beads do you use with 3 pounds of rocks, also which stage do use them with, 1, 2, 3 and or |
Answer: | Just enough to fill the drum to 3/4 full, rocks and beads. Sometimes I use them on stages 2 3and4. |
Question: | can the pellets be sifted from the media? and reused |
Answer: | I sift out the pellets from each coarseness of medium, rinse them off and save them in a zip lock bag identifying which coarseness they were used with. That way I just find the appropriate bag and reuse them. |
