9 best hobby train sets

Hobby train sets are comprehensive collections of miniature trains, tracks, and accessories designed for enthusiasts and hobbyists who enjoy model railroading. These sets provide a convenient way to start or expand a model train layout. Here's what you need to know about hobby train sets:

  1. Components of Hobby Train Sets:

    • Locomotives: Train sets typically include one or more locomotives, which are the engines that pull the train cars.
    • Train Cars: Sets come with a variety of train cars, such as passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses.
    • Track Sections: These sets include sections of track, which can vary in size and configuration, allowing hobbyists to create different layouts.
    • Power Supply: Most train sets include a power supply or transformer to control the speed and direction of the trains.
    • Controller: A controller or throttle is included to operate the trains.
    • Accessories: Some sets may include miniature buildings, figures, or other scenery elements to enhance the layout.
  2. Scale and Gauge:

    • Hobby train sets come in various scales, which determine the size of the models in relation to real trains. Common scales include HO (1:87), N (1:160), O (1:48), and G (1:22.5), among others.
    • The gauge refers to the distance between the rails. For example, HO scale typically uses a 16.5mm gauge, while N scale uses a 9mm gauge.
  3. Types of Train Sets:

    • Starter Sets: These sets are designed for beginners and provide all the essential components to get started with model railroading.
    • Expansion Sets: Enthusiasts can purchase additional train cars, track sections, and accessories to expand their existing train set.
    • Themed Sets: Some sets are themed around specific eras, railroads, or locations, allowing hobbyists to recreate specific scenes or historical periods.
    • Digital Sets: Advanced sets may include digital command control (DCC) systems, allowing for more precise control of multiple trains on the same track.
  4. Assembly and Layout:

    • Building a model train layout involves laying out the tracks, connecting the power supply, and arranging scenery and accessories.
    • Enthusiasts can customize their layouts to create unique scenes, landscapes, and settings.
  5. Operating Features:

    • Many modern hobby train sets offer realistic features such as working headlights, sound effects, and digital control options.
    • Some sets also include remote control capabilities for added convenience.
  6. Collectibility:

    • Model trains and train sets can be collectible, with enthusiasts often seeking out rare or vintage pieces to add to their collections.
  7. Safety and Maintenance:

    • Hobbyists should be aware of safety precautions when operating model trains, such as keeping small parts away from young children and ensuring proper electrical connections.
    • Regular maintenance, including cleaning tracks and lubricating moving parts, is essential to keep trains running smoothly.

Hobby train sets provide a creative and enjoyable hobby that combines craftsmanship, history, and a love of trains. Whether you're a novice or an experienced enthusiast, these sets offer a wide range of options for creating and customizing miniature worlds on your model railroad layout.

Answer: yes
Question: The age on this is 14 I'm looking for a train set for my 6 year old grandson. Is this really to advanced
Answer: Yes, you can buy curved sections, straight sections, and left and right switches. I bought this set for my granddaughter (and I ) I think I paid $89 for the set and then on eBay bought about $75 of track. We made a really nice big layout with sidings and two loops. I’m very impressed with this set. I may be a little over the top, but I also found a couple of extra rail cars from the John Deere set on eBay to add to her Pennsylvania Flyer.
Question: Is the engine plastic or metal
Answer: There are switches

  4. Terminal/Rerailer
  5. Terminal Wire

  5. Assemble the track by pushing together. Make sure the rail and joiners are seated properly. Be careful that the rail joiners do not slip under the rail without properly connecting. This can cause train derailments and electrical circuit interruptions.
  6. After track is assembled, double-check for joint connection and fit by lightly running your fingers over the top of the rails in both directions.
  7. If you detect bumps or distortion on the track surface, recheck the rail joiner fit.

Power Connections

  1. Power supply and speed control are plug and play; no tools are needed.
  2. Power is supplied to the track and the locomotive by the power supply, speed controller, terminal wire, and E-Z Track terminal/rerailer.
  3. First – turn knob on the speed controller counterclockwise until it stops (all the way to the left).
  4. Next – attach terminal wire to the speed controller by plugging it in where it says 'To Track.'

  9. The speed controller is capable of powering one accessory at a time.

Putting the Train on the Track

  1. Put the locomotive on the track and run the wheels back and forth over the terminal rerailer track.
  2. When the wheels glide smoothly over the track, you know the wheels are all on the track. If your set comes with a tender, attach it to the locomotive.
  3. Add the rest of the cars that come with your set by placing them on the track and running them back and forth over the terminal rerailer until they glide smoothly. Then gently push the cars together – they will engage automatically.
  4. Do not try to connect cars when positioned over an under-track magnet.

How to Use E-Z Mate Couplers (HO and On30 Scale)

  1. Your set may be equipped with E-Z Mate magnetically operated knuckle couplers that let you perform real railroad switching and yard operations.
  2. Coupling two cars with E-Z Mate couplers is as easy as pushing them together when they are not over an under-track magnet.
  3. Uncoupling occurs only when over an under-track magnet and when there is no tension between the cars.
  4. To uncouple E-Z Mate couplers, stop two couplers directly over the under-track magnet. With no tension between the cars, the couplers will open automatically.
  5. If cars will not couple, check to be sure cars are not positioned over the uncoupling magnet or parked on a curve.
  6. If cars will not uncouple, check to be sure the couplers are positioned directly adjacent to the magnet position indicator and that the indicator is placed in line with the center line of the under-track magnet.
  7. Check that the magnet is secured to the underside of the track and fitted with the steel plate provided.

How to Run Your Train

  1. Turn the knob on the speed controller clockwise until it stops (all the way to the left).
  2. Plug in the power supply.
  3. Begin feeding power to the track by slowly turning the knob on the speed controller clockwise.
  4. Observe the direction of your train.
  5. If it moves backwards when the controls indicate forward, stop the train.
  6. Then simply disconnect, flip, and reconnect the terminal wire to the terminal rerailer track.
  7. Remember – never leave your train running unattended!

Action Checklist (Troubleshooting If Your Train Doesn’t Run or Stops Running)

  1. Is the power supply plugged in to a live receptacle?
  2. Are the wheels on the track?
  3. Is the wiring secure?
  4. Is the track properly assembled?
  5. Is the track properly seated in the rail joiner?
  6. If your train stops or fails to start, a short circuit may be indicated. If this is the case, Unplug The Power Supply Immediately.
  7. Common reasons for a short circuit: derailed wheels may cause a short. Check to make sure all wheels are on the track. Also check all connections and make sure there is no metal of any sort across the rails.
  8. After checking everything carefully, resume operation.
  9. Please note, your power supply is protected by a circuit breaker that automatically resets after a short circuit is corrected.

User questions & answers

Question: What size are trains is it HO
Answer: It comes with the lionel fast-track. You can run on o-gauge track. You can buy transition track if you need to merge the two tracks. This or any other TMCC style train requires power to be constantly "on" throughout the track set. And either the hand controller or bluetooth device controls the engine. So you can not run a "conventional engine" with a tmcc or lionchief engine at the same time since the power is "constantly on" when using this engine control. Make sense ?
Question: Can you be used outdoors
Answer: Diecast metal engine with plastic tender and coaches. Metal wheels.
Question: Will this product fit O-gauge tracks
Answer: The end of the lanyard is intended to fit into the audio out port on a phone or computer (so you don't lose the pen). Given the length of this lanyard, that may not be a practical use for this device.
Question: metal or plastic engine
Answer: Honest truth I’m not sure if it work on Dell computers I have an HP computer and it works on that you might want to contact the seller and he’ll let you know or she that’s all I can say sorry

  5. Then – plug terminal wire into the E-Z Track terminal rerailer. Firmly push connector onto the track terminals.
  6. Finally – plug the connecting wire from the power supply into jack on the speed controller labeled 'In.' Then plug power supply into a live wall outlet.
  7. Some sets may come with a speed controller with two push button connectors. These are used to supply AC power to accessories.
  8. To make positive and secure connections to these, push in buttons and insert each of the bare ends of the connection wire from your accessory.

User questions & answers

Question: Hi i have a question, i have one of these 806 models that smokes just like this one, how much smoke oil do i put in?" i dont want to overfill it
Answer: The scale doesn't seem to be listed, and I haven't seen the item in person but sent it to my 9-year-old nephew. I received a picture of him holding it, and I was pleasantly surprised at how large it is. I thought it might be very small, but it was a good size. Hope this helps!
Question: Is this loco the smaller version of the big boy? can this pull half the cars the big boy can pull
Answer: No. There is no base. Just the airplane is all that is in the box.
Question: does it come with smoke
Answer: If the 7 year old is used to building Legos it would take as long as the same size small Lego set.
Question: Is this remote controlled? What would I need to mount it around a wall? Thanks
Answer: Took my 11yo granddaughter less than an hour to build

User questions & answers

Question: Where can I buy an appropriate caboose
Answer: The frame is metal with a plastic shell. This is not a highly detailed model, but rather a nice starter set.
Question: What size is the track assembled
Answer: yes as long as you put the voltage up to 18v then yes
Question: is the engine metal or plastic
Answer: No, the trains are O gauge (bigger than HO).
Question: Can this run on my normal ho track and still. Use remote
Answer: Yes, as a matter of fact I can be used outdoors. I was actually outdoors just a moment ago. This train, on the other hand, isn't made to be kept outdoors. You could set it up and use it outside for a while as long as the weather was nice, but it shouldn't be left outside. Since it isn't waterproof, or even water-resistant, any moisture would ruin the electronic components. I'm nut sure if you were asking me or the train, so I answered for both to be safe. If you were asking the train, then what I'm about to say will probably disappoint you........The Polar Express by Lionel isn't capable of answering you. It is an electronic toy which isn't capable of hearing, thinking, or talking. Sorry to break it to you. I'll give you a moment while you let that sink in. Go ahead, take all the time you need.

User questions & answers

Question: I just bought this but I have no idea what size/scale and where of christmas village should I buy. Does anyone have an idea
Answer: The train set is HO scale.
Question: Is it possible to set the train to start working as soon as it has power or do you need to press a button/turn it on each time to get it working
Answer: Yes, that should be the default setting - you will be able to control the power via the transformer.
Question: Delliver they also to Belgium
Answer: Thanks for visiting our store! Unfortunately, we do not ship internationally at this time and apologize for any disappointment.
Question: Train derailed often
Answer: We struggled for years with the train derailing. This year I decided to do some research. I read that though the track looks perfectly connected the rails may not be perfectly lined up. I checked and three of our connections we're not flush on the top. After I fixed this, we put the train on and now it runs perfectly. So happy.
