12 best co op board games

Co-op board games, short for cooperative board games, are a unique genre of tabletop games where players work together as a team to achieve a common goal rather than competing against each other. These games emphasize teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, making them a popular choice for players who enjoy collaborative gameplay. Here's what you need to know about co-op board games:

  1. Cooperative Gameplay: In co-op board games, all players are on the same team and must cooperate to overcome challenges presented by the game itself. The primary objective is typically to win or achieve a specific goal as a group.

  2. Shared Victory or Defeat: Unlike competitive board games where one player or team emerges as the winner, co-op games have a shared outcome. Players either all win together by accomplishing the game's objectives or lose as a team if they fail to meet certain criteria.

  3. Varied Themes and Genres: Co-op board games cover a wide range of themes and genres, from fantasy and adventure to horror, mystery, and even historical settings. This diversity allows players to find co-op games that match their interests.

  4. Role Specialization: Many co-op board games assign specific roles or abilities to each player, encouraging strategic thinking and coordination. Each player's unique abilities contribute to the team's success.

  5. Communication and Strategy: Effective communication and strategic planning are essential in co-op games. Players must discuss their moves, share information, and make decisions collectively to overcome challenges.

  6. Challenge Levels: Co-op board games come in various difficulty levels, from easy to extremely challenging. This allows players to choose games that suit their experience and preference for challenge.

  7. Popular Co-op Board Games: Some well-known co-op board games include "Pandemic," where players work together to stop the outbreak of diseases, "Forbidden Island," a treasure-hunting adventure, and "Gloomhaven," a fantasy campaign-style game with deep storytelling.

  8. Ages and Player Count: Co-op games are available for a wide range of ages and player counts. There are co-op games suitable for families as well as those designed for more serious gamers.

  9. Expansion Packs: Many co-op games offer expansion packs that add new content, challenges, and replayability to the base game, extending the gaming experience.

  10. Community and Events: Co-op board gaming has a strong community, with events and conventions dedicated to this genre. Players often gather to enjoy these games together.

Co-op board games provide a refreshing alternative to competitive gaming by fostering collaboration and teamwork. They are an excellent choice for friends and family who want to enjoy a shared gaming experience, tackle challenges together, and celebrate victories as a team.

The Legend of the Archeans

This game is centered on the legend of the Archean empire, a civilization that possessed the ability to control the Earth's core elements--fire, wind, water, and earth--through four sacred treasures. These treasures stayed hidden from enemies for years on the Forbidden Island, which was designed to sink if intruders ever attempted to capture them. Set the appropriate water level for your gaming skill, and let the adventures begin!

Capture the Four Sacred Treasures Before the Island Sinks!

Your team of adventurers must work together to keep the Forbidden Island from sinking as you seek the four treasures hidden within. The mission is carried out using different combinations of Flood, Treasure, and Adventurer Cards on the 24 tiles that make up the Forbidden Island. Once you've captured each treasure using the appropriate cards, you must make it to Fools' Landing and escape by helicopter in order to win. If the island sinks before you complete your tasks, the mission ends in defeat.

Use Collaborative Play to Succeed

Each player is dealt an Adventure Card and given a corresponding pawn before the game starts, designating him or her with a certain set of strengths. This game is designed so that instead of competing with other players, you work to find the treasures and find out how to best use each Adventurer's strengths through collaborative play. This stimulates problem-solving and strategy skills.

What's in the Box

Water level marker, water meter, 58 playing cards, 24 island tiles, 6 pawns, 4 treasure figurines, rules of play, Gamewright catalog, and comment card.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this good for children
Answer: I just wipe it down. If you have something that is liquid or sticky, then just use a paper plate, etc. and tare it out.
Question: How would you regard the replay value of this game
Answer: I honestly can't say. I have used it about every other day for a little over a week now for about 20-30 minutes at a time. There is an auto shut off after a minute or so of not using it which saves the battery life. I still have not used up the first battery so I am sorry but I do not know how long it lasts.
Question: Is this a good game for adults
Answer: It's made in China. Don't let that deter you: it seems to be pretty solidly built.
Question: Can anyone recomend games similar to this and Forbidden Desert that work well with just 2 players? Thanks
Answer: Yes, 2 batteries are included.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone know the card sleeve size for the cards? thanks in advance
Answer: No. It gives you the results in grams (141g), ounces (5.0 oz) or a pound/ounce conversion (0 lb 5.0oz). It does not convert to hundredths of a pound (e.g., where 5.0 oz becomes 0.31 pound).
Question: How is "Coup" pronounced? Is it pronounced like 'coo', or 'coop
Answer: It is written on the back of my Escali : Model:P115CHCapacity:5kg./ 175oz.I never test the max. capacity and I can say 175 oz. is really really good enough for everyday use in kitchen and normal small parcel for mailing.
Question: Is this fun to play with only two players
Answer: No it does not beep. And it is amazingly accurate. I tested with nickels which weigh 5 grams each and it consistently showed that amount unlike my two other (Taylor and Kamenstein) scales.
Question: Is this game different enough from Resistance to merit buying both
Answer: The Primo scale will turn off after four minutes of inactivity to help conserve and extend battery life.

Native Islanders, known as the dahan, have learned how to co exist with the spirits, but with a healthy dose of fear and reverence. However, now, the Island has been “discovered” by invaders from a far off land. These would be colonists are taking over the land and upsetting the natural balance, destroying the presence of spirits as they go. As spirits, you must grow in power and work together to drive the invaders from your Island... before it's too late!

  • Suitable for 1 to 4 players
  • Playing time ranges from 90 to 120 minutes
  • Complex and thematic cooperative game

User questions & answers

Question: Who do i contact for replacement peices
Answer: We play with our 8 yo daughter and 6 yo son, starting when he was 5. He's very insightful about good moves and understands entirely what is going on, but we play collaboratively so I don't know whether he would do as well on his own (that is, whether a group of kids would enjoy it as much on their own).
Question: The foldable boards in the kickstarter version don't lay flat properly. Is this problem corrected in the second edition
Answer: There is a lot of replay value. Because of the random game tiles and cards you can get a lot out of it. Plus you can adjust the difficulty of the game for a bigger challenge.
Question: The other day the shipping to australia was $19, in line with listed weight, but today it's $43. What changed
Answer: Yes and no. It is a fun and easy game. The replay value is good because the board and characters change. Unfortunately, most adults will outgrow this game. Since the game mechanics are so easy to learn, it's a great game to get into collaborative gaming or for playing with younger children.
Question: Is this the first or second printing of the game
Answer: Try Castle Panic (with the Wizards Tower expansion is best). It's a fantastic cooperative game and can be played with up to 6 players, but it still fun with just two.

In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing

Spirit Island is a complex and thematic cooperative game about defending your island home from colonizing Invaders. Players are different spirits of the land, each with its own unique elemental powers. Every turn, players simultaneously choose which of their power cards to play, paying energy to do so. Using combinations of power cards that match a spirit's elemental affinities can grant free bonus effects.

Faster powers take effect immediately, before the Invaders spread and ravage, but other magics are slower, requiring forethought and planning to use effectively. In the Spirit phase, spirits gain energy, and choose how / whether to Grow: to reclaim used power cards, to seek for new power, or to spread presence into new areas of the island.

The Invaders expand across the island map in a semi-predictable fashion. Each turn they explore into some lands (portions of the island); the next turn, they build in those lands, forming settlements and cities. The turn after that, they ravage there, bringing blight to the land and attacking any native islanders present.

The islanders fight back against the Invaders when attacked, and lend the spirits some other aid, but may not always do so exactly as you'd hoped. Some Powers work through the islanders, helping them (eg) drive out the Invaders or clean the land of blight.

User questions & answers

Question: Do you need the app to play? I'm looking for games that will also work during a power outage when my phone is for emergencies only
Answer: According to BGG forums: chriswray84 wrote:I'm going to sleeve the cards in my copy of Coup (which hasn't come yet). I've never sleeved a game before. Does anybody know what size of sleeves to order? Any recommended brand? I'm ordering from Cardhaus, if that helps at all. From the "More information" section of the game entry:* 65mm x 100mm (7 Wonders sized sleeves fit perfectly)
Question: Are the campaigns replayable? Will there be more added
Answer: It's a French word commonly used in "coup d'etat." So it's pronounced "coo" not "coop."
Question: So, this is the same game as the original with some enhancements/updates, and not a totally different game, correct
Answer: Coup is fun with 3. Best with 4 or 5, and still not bad with 6 even though the best says up to 5 players. You could still have a great time with 3, but you probably will miss out on some of the deeper strategies that were intended for the game.
Question: Researching before buying - the app says "offers in-app purchases" - Do you have to buy them in order to enjoy the game
Answer: Coup is a better "opener". It's more accessible, less complicated, fewer pieces, takes less time, and works better either for the first game of the night, or for introducing to non-gamers. The Resistance is more of a second game, when everyone is settled.

User questions & answers

Question: Where do I buy the extention for more people to play
Answer: Thanks for asking! We have sold out of the Foodie Expansion but have more on order and they will be for sale exclusively here on Amazon in late December or early January!
Question: I'm 78. can i still play? what about when i turn
Answer: It's definitely for all ages! I love it and I'm 50. My son created it when he was 7 and his grandparents love it and they are in their 80s.
Question: I saw on a youtube video explaining the game of Taco vs Burrito that there is an expansion pack. Where can one buy the expansion pack
Answer: Great Question - The Expansion Pack was for Kickstarter although we may be selling it via Amazon in the coming months. Thanks
Question: Is it made in USA
Answer: Thanks so much for asking! The product is made in China and I'd love to give you a little background that probably is too much information but thought some people might be interested as to how a 7-year-old made manufacturing decisions. There are card game manufactures in the US and most have extremely high minimum order quantities so when Alex (the then 7-year-old inventor) was first starting out with his Kickstarter he couldn't meet their minimum order quantities. We found an amazing company in China (The company's name is Bang Wee - Alex loved the name) who was willing to do smaller quantities and they were super supportive even though they knew he was only 7 years old. Since that initial Kickstarter the game has really taken off and Alex can order the larger quantities that a US manufacturer requires but he would still be a small fish for manufacturers who often work with big toy companies. He also knows that without Bang Wee he might not have ever been able to bring this product to life and they have been so good to him so he's decided to stay with that original manufacturer...although we make a point to review that every year and this year will go back to some US manufacturers to see if we can find a good fit. Also, finding manufacturers who work well with kids will be key (Alex is 9 now) as many people are not used to working with kids in manufacturing and thus Bang Wee has really shined in that regard. Also with the potential tariffs going in effect this month, Alex is learning a ton of about international trade which is such a great experience for him too. I mean how better to understand how tariffs work than to pay them yourself. We will update this Q&A if we do switch to a US Manufacturer.

User questions & answers

Question: can this game be played with
Answer: As other suggested you can use 2 characters per person until the haunt happens and give the survivor player the remaining 3rd character. Alternatively, you could reduce the effectiveness of the haunt. (Halve the number summons, create additional win conditions, or lessen restrictions, etc.)For example, in the Ring of King Solomon haunt you could do one of the following:Summon only the Demon Lord, opposed to the Demon Lord and +1 demon per survivor.Give the survivor a couple item cards from the top of the item deck.Halve the stats of all demons summoned.Although after playing some rounds in normal 2player some haunts are perfectly fine for it by default with only 2 survivors.
Question: Why is this game over
Answer: Supply and demand. Many people desire the game because of the show TableTop and ones that own it will sell for profit knowing the next print run is in August.
Question: Is the 2nd edition identical to the 1st edition but a different box? Or are the stories and room tiles different at all
Answer: The second edition actually fixes some of the random issues with logical inconsistencies (in the first edition you could have a lake on the second floor), and it clarifies some of the scenarios while adding and removing a few of them. You can visit Board Game Geek's forum for more information here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/996123/difference-between-1st-and-2nd-editions-betrayal-h
Question: When is gonna be a restock of this game
Answer: Hi, I'm the designer of the game. I was concerned about all the rumors here, so I checked with the publisher. She told me that 5000 copies of the game had been sent to distributors during Q4, but some of the larger distributors may have sold out theirs already due to the Tabletop coverage. There are more on the way, though, and I suspect that some of the smaller places and local stores may still have copies available, so you shouldn't need to start scavenging quite yet!

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this game play with 2 people
Answer: The publisher. Greater Than Games.
Question: is it realish
Answer: It is still a problem, yes. While it isn't game breaking, and shouldn't prevent you from getting the game if interested (as the game is fantastic), it is off-putting to try to "mold" the boards back into shape to get them to lay flat.
Question: How well does this game work for one player
Answer: Cannot tell from here, but sounds like your shipping address changed or the shipping method you selected changed.. No US retailer can ship a game that heavy to Australia for $19. In fact, even at $43, the retailer would be taking a significant loss. To us, those look like U.S. domestic shipping charges -- $19 for standard shipping and $43 for express or 2 day shipping. Buy, again, I am just guessing since I cannot see your screen. Respectfully, Robert S. They will have to decipher the images to help the ghost remember how he was murdered (who? where? which weapon?). The more they cooperate and guess, well, the easier it will be to the catch the right culprit. This party game is one of the most anticipated games, thanks to innovative, thrilling and immersive features. It offers cooperation and investigation with an asymmetrical gameplay. While playing the ghost or a medium, you will have fun trying to guess what other players have in their minds! So enter in this strange manor and let yourself be led by your intuition.

  • Cooperative investigation, everyone loses or wins
  • Strong and immersive story line
  • Ghostly fun for 2 to 7 players with a high replay value

User questions & answers

Question: What is the replayability of this game? Will people end up developing a "code" for the pre-existing pictures for the same set of possible murder
Answer: It’s pretty similar in that you have a list of statements and need to come up with words that answer it and all start with the same letter. Goes faster. Has some off-color topics and references that have made a couple of moments during family game night with 14 and 16 year olds a bit awkward: words that describe your period (awkward for my son who doesn’t have a period), words that describe your favorite adult toy, words that describe the first time you had sex. Not every round has these, but probably half of the rounds have one of 8 questions like these.
Question: Is the game worth getting if you usually only have 2 players? Our game nights with friends are infrequent. Is it worth it
Answer: The US version is printed in China. The Chinese version is printed in the US. Go figure.
Question: How similar is this to Letters from Whitechapel? The gameplay sounds very similar - I'm wondering if they are different enough to warrant owning both
Answer: Only in so far as you are directly contradicting the declared statement that "0% of this purchase will be donated to the Make-A-Wish foundation", thus bringing us one step closer to the singularity. My theoretical descendants shall rail against their fate and curse your name.
Question: Anything like Clue
Answer: Its a typo. In reality 100% of profits goes to make a wish. However they do not make any profit from the game. They in fact loose $1.68 from each one they sell. In turn they charge make a wish for this loss.

Dead of Winter

Plaid Hat Games

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game, the first game in this series, puts 2-5 players in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity is either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. Each player leads a faction of survivors with dozens of different characters in the game. Dead of Winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition - but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests! Dead of Winter is an experience that can be accomplished only through the medium of tabletop games. It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies and keep the colony's morale up. Dead of Winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

User questions & answers

Question: I like to keep all my cards in clear protective sleeves. What are the dimensions on the playing cards
Answer: Yes, this game needs the app to play. It would be challenging (if not impossible) to play the game otherwise.
Question: A quick question, I see that 2 players can play this game. I'm curious, how is it with 2 players? I've only seen groups of 4 to 5 play
Answer: They are replayable, though I'm not sure to what extent. The game seems to somewhat randomly generate the map as you replay. I've also heard there are alternate story paths and endings. As to more quests, Fantasy Flight has announced two expansions (https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/8/12/a-horror-without-end/) that will include more quests, tiles, and figures, but it's unknown if they'll add more free quests or a quest creator.
Question: How is this game compared to other zombie games? Is there a better zombie survival game out there. Thanks
Answer: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/09/mansions-of-madness-review-let-an-app-be-your-dungeon-master/
Question: I've only played this game once at GenCon and it was a blast! I am worried about replayability however. How does the game hold up after 5, 10 plays
Answer: I would say no, however I'll list what you basically get with and without the extra purchases.Without any purchases you get:-8 characters with different abilities. They're pretty balanced characters.-a large amount of figurines.-a large amount of double-sided map tiles.-4 scenarios. This is the only one that feels like you might want more. I've done multiple play-throughs with different people and it's fun each time. The only downside is you already know the plot. 2 of the 4 scenarios use different map tiles each time, (meaning the layout of the house changes, selecting 1 out of like 4 different pre-constructed maps.) The total amount of hours to complete them all, depending on group size/speed would be around 12-15 hours. Now, the in-app extra content basically adds these perks:-in app purchases cost about $5.00 each and you get a new scenario. They only have 1 scenario like this so far. I'd say it's worth the $4.00, but not necessary to enjoy it.There are also 2 different purchasable extra content packs that are actual physical boxes filled with new stuff. I personally enjoy them a lot, but again, are not necessary for fun. You check a box in the app to say you have each one and it will know to integrate the new content with the old. Here's what they each come with:-8 new characters per extra content pack (bringing the total number of playable characters to 24.) This brings a lot more fun variety and replay ability, but really isn't necessary.-Several new figurines. The monsters you encounter will be more varied. It's a fun but not necessary perk.-Several new map tiles. Not necessary, but will add even more variations of maps for scenarios.-1 new scenario per content pack you purchase. Each scenario specifically making a map around the new tiles. My honest opinion is that everything they add onto the game for you to buy is well done and absolutely adds to the fun, but not necessary to have fun. The base game comes with enough.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the app narration change every play through keeping the game new and fresh? Or is it the same each time
Answer: The game play with two players is just as fun as with 4 or 5. There are small adjustments with more players, such as number of cards in hand for each player. But this game is actually more challenging and more fun with 2 to 3 players. Hope this helps.
Question: Is there an app for the kindle fire
Answer: It's a fantasy game, and is only "realish" within its own terms. However, it definitely makes for interesting and suspenseful games.
Question: Is the app available for the Kindle fire
Answer: This game works perfectly well as a solitaire game. The strategy involved is shallow, but there aren't many choices for 1-player board games either.
Question: Is the app required? Can the game be played without it
Answer: I play this game with four kids ranging in age from 6 to 13. After just a few minutes of playing, my 6yo had the rules down solid. I would say any kid 10+ should be able to pick it up without difficulty, and most kids from 6-7 should be able to figure it out with some help from an adult or older kid.

User questions & answers

Question: As a Co-op game how well does this play solo
Answer: I also keep all my cards sleeved! I used Ultra Pro Standard size sleeves 66mm x 91mm. I recommend using the Pro-matte sleeves.
Question: What was the effect or description of the irrational anger card as this has two identical irrational fears with the same effect
Answer: Me and my girlfriend play co-op 2 player and its still fun in yo play. 4-5 is better though.
Question: Is this good with two players
Answer: I have Zombicide which I haven't opened yet. I've played Zombies!!! I honestly don't think there is a better one out there. Watch the tabletop people play it on youtube. You should get an idea if this game is for you.
Question: Does this version fix the misprint of the counsellor card where there's a science symbol in place of an action symbol
Answer: The game has a high replayability value. Between the scenarios, the hidden goal, the characters, the possibility of a traitor, and most of all the crossroads cards, this game has a great deal of stamina. I think it best compares to Battlestar, which is one of the top two games on my shelf for total number of plays. One group loves battlestar and has played it easily 40 times, another group loves power grid, and that has to be pushing 100 plays. I think Dead of Winter will be a game that sees much replay, drawing in the people who like the idea of battlestar, but don't want to invest 5 or more hours.
