13 best electric tankless water heaters
Electric tankless water heaters are an energy-efficient and space-saving alternative to traditional tank-style water heaters. They provide on-demand hot water without the need for a large storage tank, making them suitable for both residential and commercial applications. Here are some key points about electric tankless water heaters:
How They Work: Electric tankless water heaters heat water directly as it flows through the unit. When you turn on a hot water tap, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit, where it is heated by an electric element. The heated water is then delivered to your faucet or shower. This process eliminates the need for a storage tank, which means you can get hot water instantly without waiting for it to be heated.
Energy Efficiency: Electric tankless water heaters are known for their energy efficiency because they only heat water when it is needed. Traditional tank-style water heaters constantly heat and reheat water in the storage tank, leading to energy waste. In contrast, tankless heaters can be up to 30% more energy-efficient.
Space-Saving: Tankless water heaters are compact and can be installed in various locations, including closets, under sinks, or even outdoors. This flexibility in installation can save valuable space in your home.
Endless Hot Water: With a properly sized electric tankless water heater, you can enjoy a continuous supply of hot water. Since they heat water on demand, you won't run out of hot water even during long showers or when multiple faucets are in use simultaneously.
Maintenance: Electric tankless water heaters typically have fewer maintenance requirements compared to tank-style heaters. However, it's essential to periodically flush the unit to remove mineral deposits and ensure optimal performance.
Initial Cost: While tankless water heaters are more energy-efficient, they can have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional tank-style heaters. The cost may vary based on the unit's size, brand, and installation requirements.
Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the efficient operation of electric tankless water heaters. It's recommended to hire a professional plumber or technician with experience in installing these units.
Sizing: Choosing the right size of tankless water heater is essential to meet your hot water demand. Factors such as the number of bathrooms, appliances, and fixtures in your home should be considered when determining the appropriate unit size.
Voltage Requirements: Electric tankless water heaters come in different voltage options, so it's important to ensure that your home's electrical system can support the unit you choose.
Temperature Rise: The temperature rise, or the increase in water temperature from the incoming cold water, is a critical factor in selecting the right tankless water heater. It depends on your climate and the desired hot water temperature.
In summary, electric tankless water heaters offer a more energy-efficient and space-saving solution for providing hot water on demand. They are suitable for various applications but require proper sizing and installation to ensure optimal performance.

This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 62°F and above. The ECO 18 is capable of heating over 2.5 gallons per minute, which is the equivalent of one water saver shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 62°F, and an output setting of 105° F. Two showers emitting no more than 1.5 gpm each can be run simultaneously when incoming water temperature is above 70° F. Digital temperature control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1°. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. However, when sized properly it will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 18 requires a minimum 150 amp electrical panel for installation with 40 amp double pole breakers connected to sets of #8 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 3/4" NPT. User questions & answers
Question: | How do know which size to buy? We will supply two bathrooms, dish washer, clothes washer. What size should I choose |
Answer: | I noted someone below stating they got the largest one and they can only run one water source at a time. My guess is they installed it wrong by not getting the electric hooked up right, or maybe the unit was just defective, or they live in Alaska. I went under size with an Eco 27 a few years ago because that’s all my electric panel could handle. We have zero issues in the summer. During winter months we can only run one shower at a time and have to slowly fill a tub (maybe 3/4 fill speed). To save as much money as I am on electric bill and have unlimited shower lengths (only 1 person at a time mid-Dec to mid-March) is totally worth it. On here today because I’m thinking of upping my panel size so was thinking of going with a larger one now. Regardless, CCRC’s experience with the largest unit not working is nothing like the experience I’ve had, and again I intentionally undersized mine for the house. The website has a clear chart to explain size you need based on number of water fixtures in your home and ground water temperature. |
Question: | Can this unit supply a 3,700 sq foot home with 3 1/2 baths |
Answer: | In the lower states it can, but in the northern states, multiple simultaneous users, it will be overloaded. If you can afford a 3,700 square foot home, then you can place a unit in each appropriate demand zone and be very glad you did. I love mine, live in KY, get great supply when the water is above 60 degrees, and then it slows the flow as the temperature drops. I have dishwasher, washing machine, garden tube, 2 showers, 3 sinks and 4 people. It is better than great in the summer, okay spring and fall, and we are conservative in the winter. |
Question: | What is the power consumption of this tank-less heater |
Answer: | The instantaneous power consumption while the hot water is running is quite high (up to 18kW or 27kW depending on which model you’re looking at on this page). However, when no hot water is being used, the power consumption is 0 (or a minuscule amount to run an LED light or something). The total power consumption over the course of several days or longer should be much lower than a tank heater but the short term power usage while the heater is making hot water will be much higher than a tank heater. It’s just that the unit sits idle most of the time while a tank heater will use power fairly frequently even when no hot water is needed as the water in the tank cools off over time and needs to be re-heater fairly constantly |
Question: | remote |
Answer: | This unit does not have the ability to have a remote temperature control. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Ours has only been in service for less than a year - will not adjust temperature to anything above 85 Deg. F. What do you think is the problem ? kds |
Answer: | My only guess is that the rheostat (variable resistor) that the temperature adjustment knob is attached to may be faulty. If that isn't it then I don't know. Sorry. |
Question: | The warrenty says that this unit must be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, for them to honor the "life time warrenty." why |
Answer: | Hello Bob, The reason is the same as why an innumerable number of gadgets around the world have that little "warranty void if removed" label. Because getting inside of one requires a certain level of training and expertise. Same with this unit. GadgetsGo is an authorized Ecosmart dealer. Kind regards,HenryGadgetsGo |
Question: | My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion |
Answer: | Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met. |
Question: | what amp breaker is required |
Answer: | The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. |

User questions & answers
Question: | which models are "condensing" units, please |
Answer: | I don’t know. But I suggest u look for a different brand. It already failed twice in less than a year and their warranty is a scam. They provide the parts which are pennies and leave out labor. |
Question: | How does it effect the water pressure, will it change |
Answer: | It does not effect my water pressure at all. I’ve had it for over a year now |
Question: | My existing water heater is located next to and shares a flue with the furnace. Can I hook the same way on this |
Answer: | Hold up there, previous answer, not so fast. It is true that you should not have both the hot water heater and furnace venting directly into the flue, combining the exhaust. However, some people see their vent pipes entering the flue (or chimney wall) and assume they are both releasing the fumes inside the chimney. In some cases, the venting pipes continue separately up the flue. Joseph, if you have two vent pipes entering your flue, there is a chance that both pipes continue separately up the flue and out the top. If that is the case, you may be able to use the existing hot water vent system. When you look at the top of your chimney, do you see two terminations coming out? |
Question: | How does very cold intake water affect performance |
Answer: | Sorry to contradict but the temperature of the water going into the water heater will definitely have an effect on the temperature of the water coming out. the water heater needs to provide enough BTUs to heat the volume of water that you need to the water temperature that you want. If the water starts off at a lower temperature it will take more BTUs to get it to the temperature you want. This unit claims to be able to provide 6.6 gallons of hot water per minute but that assumes the water is startling an average temperature. If you have a modern shower head it will only use about 2.5 GPM but if you have second shower going, a hot water faucet open or a clothes washer filling at the same time you will run out of capacity quickly. Rinnai should have tables on their website that shows the ability of the unit to heat water at a variety of starting temperatures to a range of hot water temperatures at a given flow rate. |

Product description
"The Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Plus Tankless Water Heater features exclusive Advanced Flow Control German patented technology invented by Stiebel Eltron to automatically maintain water temperature for constant comfort. It’ll reduce flow slightly if hot water demand exceeds capacity to ensure that hot showers will never be interrupted. Tempra 24 Plus will typically use 15-20% less energy compared to conventional electric tank water heaters. Although, it’s possible to save significantly more energy depending on personal home usage habits. The difference is that conventional tank water heaters continually store hot water, and as a result, lose 15%-20% of the total energy consumed to the environment around them. This is called standby heat loss. Tank water heaters that use gas or oil are even less efficient, because they also lose heat through their vents to the outdoors. Our tankless water heaters do not need venting, and will not store hot water, waiting for you to use it. They operate on-demand to provide continuous and endless hot water when you need it, and not waste energy when you don’t. CERTIFICATIONS INCLUDE - ANSI/UL Std. 499, CSA Std. User questions & answers
Question: | How can i make tempra trend 24 work with my bosch shx33a05uc/22 dishwasher? the dishwasher will not advance to next cycle. water is not hot enough |
Answer: | This water heater activates at 0.5 GPM and will heat to your set temperature at the correct flow rate for that set temperature. Please call our Technical Department at 1-800-582-8423 Ext 6 with more details so we can help you better. (for example, does the dishwasher have its own heating element, distance between the 2 units, etc...) Thank you. |
Question: | Electric panel is ~50 feet from where i want to install the tempra 29 trend. is this distance ok for #8 thhn wire |
Answer: | The recommended wire is 8/2 and there is not a limit to distance written in the install directions. You need to check with your electrician. Make sure he is state license and insured. We have installed a Tempra 29 and our electrician ran three 8/2's approx. 30' with no question. But check with your electrician and local codes. God bless you and happy New Year. |
Question: | Is there an installation kit available for this? i am installing in a remote location & plumbing parts are not available? water lines are pvc |
Answer: | There is no specific installation kit. However, we suggest using flexible braided hose connections that screw onto the hot and cold water for the first 18" or so. These connections are easy to remove to check a filter screen or if needed to work on the unit in general. The connections are 3/4" NPT. Please feel free to call our Technical Support Department at 1-800-582-8423 ext 6 with any questions. Thank You. |

Question: | Can this directly replace a 40 gal tank heater with a 30A double pole breaker? What are power requrements |
Answer: | No it can't. RTEX-24 requires 3 sets of wire and ground, and it needs 3x 40amp breaker. That's a total of 120amps |
Question: | Can you use the 10/3 for one of the cicuits |
Answer: | No. It requires three legs of 8-2. |
Question: | Can the unit operate as a rtex-18 if i only hook up 2 of the elements? because i only need the 18 specs as of now but would like the option to upgrade |
Answer: | Actually you can do this but you must be careful on which circuits are connected. Rheem says the elements are activated from right to left as power is required. The right most element connection also provides power to the control so this must always be connected. If the very left element is left disconnected, you will only get 2/3 of the rated power on a 3 element unit. |
Question: | Why are 2 answers for the breaker requirements. Is it 3 double 40 or 3 double 60 amp |
Answer: | If the unit draws 40 amp. you need a 2 pole 40 amp breaker 2 #8 wires good for 40 amp and 1 # 10 wire for a bond. Now if the unit draws 60 amps you need 2 # 6's good for 65 amps. A 2 pole 60 amp breaker and 1 # 8 for a bond( ground wire). |

User questions & answers
Question: | What temperature change is achieved at a flow of 2.5 GPM |
Answer: | Water temperature of the mini electric water heater is controlled by the size of water flow. Large water flow results in low temperature, small water flow results in high temperature. |
Question: | Is this unit any good for washing machines |
Answer: | NO |
Question: | Will it freeze if mounted in a shed with no heat? Is there an easy way to drain it between uses |
Answer: | It will freeze. There is no heat on the in-line water heater when it is not in use. Therefore it is nothing more than the pipes into and out of it. It will not be easy to drain it between uses. Draining is would require uninstalling it which will require turning off the water supply and disconnecting the fittings. |
Question: | What size hose is needed for connection |
Answer: | Tankless water heater, both the water inlet and outlet are 20 mm in diameter,International standard quadruple interface |

Minimize Wait Time for Hot Water
Waiting for hot water at a sink located far from a primary heating source can be frustrating. Only having access to cold water from a sink is just not useful, and plumbing a hot water line to every sink in a home or business requires time and money. To get hot water where it’s needed, when it’s needed, a better solution is to use the Tronic 3000 T from Bosch: a point-of-use electric mini-tank heater. This heater can supplement a primary water heating source, or be used under a single sink. In fact, the Bosch Tronic 3000 T can be used for three different applications: as a sole water heating source for a single sink, as a supplement to an existing heater located far from the sink, and as a buffer installed in-line with tankless water heaters that experience intermittent cold water, also known as 'cold water sandwiching'. No matter the configuration, there’s minimal stand-by loss from this premium mini-tank water heater.

User questions & answers
Question: | I understand this unit, the ECO 24, requires 3 - 220 (double) breakers. What amperage for each |
Answer: | 40 amp 240v breakers (2 pole breakers) |
Question: | Will this Eco 24 system work with a dedicated 100A sub-panel off a 200A service panel |
Answer: | I'm not an electrician, but in your situation, all the power is coming from the main service panel. You should consult with an electrician to calculate your maximum load. I've had no issues with my Eco 24 running 3-40 amp breakers off a 200 amp service panel. If you have a heat pump you could be pushing the limit at certain times. Be safe, consult an electrician. |
Question: | will this work to fill up small jacuzzi |
Answer: | Hello Oscar. This unit is not intended for a Jacuzzi due to the flow rate that the Jacuzzi requires. Instead, Ecosmart manufactures a product specifically for this. It is the Smart SPA and we have it for sale on our Amazon store. GadgetsGo is an Authorized Ecosmart Dealer.Kind Regards,Ross GadgetsGo |
Question: | i have 6 bathrooms, 2 laundry rooms will one do the job? or i need two |
Answer: | Hello Raz,Thank you for your question. I am replying in less than one hour, after business hours, to expedite your request.Actually it does not matter how many bathrooms your home has. What matters is how many points of use that you will use at the same time. So to determine whether this or any tankless heater will work, just add up the total water flow rate in gallons per minute ("GPM") of all your points of use. A shower flow rate can range from 1.5 to 2.5 GPM. A bathroom sink: 0.75 GPM. A clothes washer: 3 to 4 GPM.So, if you expect only to have one shower and one sink running at the same time, this will give you at least 105F hot water, if your incoming cold water temp is above about 55F.Please let me know if I can assist you further.Kind Regards,Ross KelsonGadgetsGoP.S. If you have found my answer helpful, please prefer us when you purchase. You will continue to get priceless service after the sale. |

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water
Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.
Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.
Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

User questions & answers
Question: | We have a 500sq' apt. 1 kitchen sink, 1 lav sink and tub/shower. This tankless heats water to both sinks but nothing to the tub/sh. Help |
Answer: | Sinks have aerators to slow down the water where a tub doesn't. It sounds like one possibility is that your exceeding the GPM for this heater. Next possibility, double check an measure your actually getting at least 240v at the heater, I had an issue where my unit was only getting 235v an it was causing a similar issue where only one of the two heating elements was activating. I had it set to 125F but it was coming out 100F. It was warm and without a meter I would of thought it was working correctly until I tried filling a tub. It couldn't even get the water warm. I pulled my wires out an restripped an cut an screwed them in an it fixed my problem, now its measuring around 245v. Make sure there is no copper showing after screwing down your input wires. Now filling the tub I noticed after about 10-15 seconds the water gets too hot to touch. I set it to 135F. |
Question: | Do these tankless water heaters require an overflow line to the outside of the home or a pan like is required on normal water heaters |
Answer: | No tank, so, no overflow line required. It mounts on the wall. A pan is needed if required by building code in your city. |
