12 best screw removers
Screw removers, also known as tap extractors or screw extractors, are tools designed to remove damaged, stripped, or broken screws, bolts, or taps from various materials. They are essential for anyone involved in maintenance, repair work, or DIY projects. Here's what you should know about screw removers:
Types of Screw Removers:
- Screw Extractors: These tools are specifically designed to grip and turn damaged screws or bolts in a counterclockwise direction, allowing you to remove them from the material.
- Tap Extractors: Tap extractors are specialized tools for removing broken taps, which are used for threading holes in metal. They work by biting into the tap and then turning it counterclockwise.
- Stripped Screw Removers: Some screw extractors are designed to remove stripped or rounded-off screw heads. They typically have a different shape, such as a double-ended bit or a spiral design, to grip the screw securely.
How Screw Extractors Work: Screw extractors typically have a tapered, spiral shape with left-hand threads. To use one, you drill a small hole into the center of the damaged screw or tap. Then, you insert the extractor into the hole, and as you turn it counterclockwise, it grips onto the damaged fastener and allows you to unscrew it.
Size and Compatibility: Screw extractors come in various sizes to match different screw or bolt sizes. It's crucial to select the right size extractor for the job to ensure a secure grip and effective extraction.
Materials: Screw extractors are often made of high-strength steel, which ensures durability and the ability to withstand the torque required for removing stubborn fasteners.
Drilling and Tapping: In some cases, you may need to drill a pilot hole before using a screw extractor, especially for larger or more stubborn fasteners. This pilot hole provides a starting point for the extractor. After extraction, you may also need to tap or rethread the hole.
Safety Considerations: When using a screw extractor, take safety precautions such as wearing eye protection and following the manufacturer's instructions.Apply steady, controlled force to avoid damaging the material further.
Maintenance: Keep your screw extractors clean and well-maintained to ensure their effectiveness. Remove any debris or metal shavings from the tool after each use and store them in a dry, rust-free environment.
Alternative Methods: If a screw extractor fails to remove a stubborn fastener, there are alternative methods such as using penetrating lubricants, heat, or pliers to grip and turn the screw. In extreme cases, drilling out the fastener may be necessary, but this can damage the surrounding material.
In summary, screw removers, including screw extractors and tap extractors, are indispensable tools for dealing with damaged or broken fasteners. Proper selection, careful use, and maintenance are essential for successful extraction, making these tools valuable additions to any toolbox for maintenance and repair tasks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this bit fit a screwdriver? And do you think I can remove a laptop screw in this manner |
Answer: | it depends on how crafty you are using similar tools. I used to replace a star screw on a thin RAZER 15" laptop. I placed some pads between the table and the laptop, I didn't push too hard to press the extractor in to the screw so I didn't break the screen. also I would recommend to use very low revolutions in your drill otherwise this thing will perforate the screw and the hole in no time. If you are careful I think you can use it almost anywhere. |
Question: | What is the smallest size bolt that can be removed with this extractor |
Answer: | It's made in China. I couldn't find one made in the US. |
Question: | Does anyone know if these will work on the tiny screws holding an rmr optic baseplate on the slide of a handgun? thanks in advance |
Answer: | You should choose a size smaller than the screw hole, or you can watch the tutorial with a YouTube video |
Question: | Is it safe use on a laptop |
Answer: | Yes. I followed the directions that either came with the remover -- or I looked up on youtube. I can't remember. You may have to experiment with which size you use. I know the first one didn't work, but the second one was right. They did work o.k. with my problem. |

This makes them unique in the market and "World's Best Pliers" |
Question: | Does anyone know if these will work for screws where the head got torn off (only body of screw left |
Answer: | They absolutely will work on screws with the head torn off. However, there must be a sufficient amount of shaft left for them to grip. If there is enough shaft left for a good grip, vice grips are an even better alternative if the screw is tightly stuck. You can even grip the exposed shaft with the Vampliers, which have superior grip due to the vertical teeth, and then clamp a large pair of vice grips onto the Vampliers' jaws for greater leverage and grip if the broken screw warrants such extreme measures. |

Product description
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact Jellas first when you decided to purchase. We will tell if this product suits or not. Another important thing is that you should be careful of the working speed of the electric drill, and should keep the speed under 200 rpm, as the bit may break for high speed use. Also you can use a wrench to extractor. The lower speed, the better, which will also help you not make the frictional locking force out of control and protect the screw extractors not breaking.
- [Technology-Leading] - Jellas 22pcs damaged screw extractor set made by HSS material can create more extraction possibilities for broken screws or bolts of different sizes (2-12mm) and can work on irregular and jagged irregular cuts; Extra gift of 2 common sizes (#3 & #6) enhances the longer service life of the product

JELLAS Damaged Screw Extractor
Designed Tools seed New Stories
If you forget the pilot hole or drive a screw too quickly, a power screwdriver can spin its bit fast enough to strip away the cross or other shape in a screw. Once that’s gone, the screw can’t be driven deeper or backed out. For screws where the stripped screw head rests flush with the wood (and you don’t want to risk damage to your project), then you may need a screw extractor.
Jellas 22 pieces extractor screws to extract screws made of advanced High Speed steel (H.S.S), twice tempered for extra hardness and is up to 64-65HRC; It can extract screws from 2 to 12 mm. Our screw extractor set works with any drill and any size of screw or bolt, great for those stubborn, broken, blocked or damaged and also for simple removal of screws, Jellas Screw extractors are designed to help you with that.
Attentions
The screw extractor is to keep the frictional locking force between the #drill/#extr bits and the damaged screws under control which will take a few more times if you are a new user.
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact out seller center first when you decided to purchase.
Instructions for Use
Drilling the Screw
Step1, It is better to use a drill rather than a screwdriver.
Step2, Please press the reverse button on the drill to prepare the electric drill for use.(Don’t need to reset the reverse button the whole process.)
Step3, Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw. Hold the drill bits up to the screw or fastener you need to remove. The right one will be slightly less wide than the screw head. When you find the right one, attach it to your drill.
Step 4, Line the drill bit up with the center of the screw. Place the drill bit in the divot you created earlier. Move slowly as you begin to drill. Too much force will damage the screw. Focus on holding the drill bit steady so it drills straight down into the screw head.
Step5, Drill a hole for the extractor. You will need to drill somewhere between 1⁄8 inch (3.2 mm) and 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) into the screw head. The depth depends on the screw extractor you have. Hold up the extractor to compare it to the hole you drilled. If the extractor doesn’t fit, keep drilling to widen the hole.
Pulling out the Screw
Step1, Insert the extractor into the drilled hole. The spiral end of the extractor goes into the hole. You can tap it with a hammer to make sure it’s in there, but don’t force it. The loose end should have a tap handle, which looks like a T, for you to hold onto. Twist the extractor counterclockwise until you can’t turn it anymore.
Step2, Twist the extractor with a wrench or drill. Grip the top of the extractor with a wrench. Continue to twist it counterclockwise until the screw pops free. Many extractors are designed to work with drills. Attach the free end of the extractor to the drill and turn on the drill to turn the screw counterclockwise. It’ll come out without much resistance.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi I need extractors that can work on small screws such as 2mm-6mm will this set do it or is there another |
Answer: | the manufacturers site has the sizes of screws for these. I think these will work but check the site |
Question: | The head of a 1/8" screw broke off when trying to drill the screw in Drywall. Will this work to remove the broken screw thats stuck inside my drywall |
Answer: | I wouldn't recommend it. The Grabit is designed to remove a screw (in your case a drywall screw), where the slots in the head of the screw have been worn or damaged to the extent that the driver can't get enough "bite" to turn it. The Grabit drills into the head of the screw to the depth and width that allows the reverse-threaded extractor to get enough "bite" to turn and back out the damaged screw. In your case I assume that the head of the screw broke-off, so there's an insufficient metal surface for the Grabit to do its job. If the screw stem extends out beyond the surface of the drywall, I'd suggest grabbing it with a pair of vise-grips and turning it back out. But, use care as drywall crumbles like a stale cookie. Now, if the screw shaft is below the surface of the drywall, then spackling and a putty knife will do the trick. |

Stripped and Damaged Screw Extractor Set
The must have tool for any handyman, car or boat mechanic, contractor, carpenter, woodworker, or anyone who constantly works with screws and bolts. You know how frustrating it can be to try to remove a broken or snapped screw head, stripped bolt, painted over deck screws and much more.
Easily removes screw and bolt head types from flat head, phillips, hex, allen, torx, square, round and any other type of stripped screw or bolt you encounter.
Quick and Easy to Use:
First you want ensure that you are using a bit that is SMALLER than the screw you are trying to remove. That way it has enough room to drill a proper sized hole to extract.
Slowly start to drill a hole into the screw head or bolt with the cutting size. This creates a cone shaped hole that makes it easy for the extractor head to grab onto.
Flip the drill bit to the extractor side. Reverse your drill and start slow to allow the threads to catch. Continue to screw or drill until the bolt or screw is fully removed.
And thatâ€s it! Within a matter of seconds you easily removed that broken screw without damaging any of your other tools or bits. The high strength steel bit does all the work for you.
