14 best quick release vises
A quick-release vise, also known as a quick-action vise or rapid-action vise, is a type of bench vise designed for fast and efficient clamping of workpieces in various woodworking, metalworking, and DIY applications. These vises are commonly used by craftsmen, woodworkers, metalworkers, and other professionals who require a secure and quick means of holding workpieces in place during tasks like sawing, drilling, milling, or filing. Here are some key features and information about quick-release vises:
Quick Release Mechanism: The defining feature of a quick-release vise is its rapid clamping and releasing mechanism. Traditional vises require the user to turn a handle several times to tighten or release the jaws, which can be time-consuming. Quick-release vises, on the other hand, allow you to quickly open or close the jaws with a single lever or handle, reducing setup and teardown time.
Versatile Jaws: Quick-release vises typically have replaceable or interchangeable jaws that can be customized to suit the specific needs of the task. These jaws come in various shapes and materials, such as wood, metal, or rubber, depending on the type of workpiece and the desired grip.
Sturdy Construction: To ensure stability and durability, quick-release vises are typically constructed from high-quality materials such as cast iron or steel. This robust construction helps prevent flexing and ensures a secure hold on the workpiece.
Mounting Options: Quick-release vises can be mounted to a workbench or a dedicated vise stand. The choice of mounting depends on the user's workspace and preferences.
Quick Adjustments: The rapid-action mechanism makes it easy to make fine adjustments to the clamping pressure. This is particularly useful when working on delicate materials or when a secure but not overly tight grip is required.
Safety Features: Many quick-release vises are equipped with safety features such as an anti-pinch mechanism to prevent accidental injuries when closing the jaws.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and lubrication, is essential to ensure the smooth operation of the quick-release mechanism and the longevity of the vise.
Quick-release vises are invaluable tools for professionals and hobbyists alike, as they save time and effort during various woodworking and metalworking tasks. They provide a reliable and efficient way to hold workpieces securely, making them a popular choice in workshops and home improvement projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of the Mounting plate, vertical and horizontal |
Answer: | Not real sure. Didn't see anything on the vise but if I rember right, the box said "China". Probably did, everything is nowadays. |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | The approximate dimensions of this vice are: Jaw width, 7 inches; height, 6.5 inches; and depth, 14 inches (with jaws closed). The jaws have a max opening span of 7-7/8 inches. The shipping weight of the vise is 22 pounds. |
Question: | Can the vise be disassemble so as to bury the rear jaw behind the bench apron |
Answer: | If I understand your question, I would think a simple solution would be to install two wood faces inside your vice and mount them level with the bench surface. The wood faces inside the vise will also protect your work from the steel jaws. |
Question: | Noticed that my vice is closing on the left side before the right side clamps down. Thinking it due to the screw design... this normal |
Answer: | Without using a force gauge I can't specifically say, however I can confidently say it's we'll in excess of 1000 lbs. I've used it to lock 8/4 red oak boards 55" × 14" for hand planing and it locks them in without any shifting. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the $60 regular version and the $112 “improved version” that justifies double the price |
Answer: | 71/4 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches high. I lowered it 2 inches and added some 3/4 Baltic birch ply wood faces and expanded the vise to 10 1/2 wide and 5 1/2 high. Works great that way. |
Question: | What size handle does this take |
Answer: | It is made by an American company, but could not find a "made in" stamp anywhere visible after I installed it. Good vice, probably assembled in the states from foreign made parts. |
Question: | I see that the Length and Width are 9 1/4” x4 1/4” . What is the height or vertical clearance required |
Answer: | Yes, I did that to mine and it worked out great. I built my own 4x8 workbench with 2x4's., butcher block style. I left out about 2' where I was going to attach the vise. I took 2 pieces of 1x oak I had hanging around the shop and cut out a sort of upside down U into the oak with about an inch left up top , same shape I scribed from the backside of the vise. I attached the vise to my table, slipped the cut-out piece I cut from the oak over it so you didnt see the top metal part of the vise and a second piece of the oak over that covering the face of the rear part of the vice. I slipped the screw part of the front back in then...screwed two pieces of 1x oak to the inside of the front . Looks and works amazing now! I'd add a photo but dont see that feature for these posts...sorry. |
Question: | Would the 10" version be suitable as an end vise |
Answer: | When you close your vise When it is new it will close evenly across the jaws, However after some use they will "rack". This is caused by clamping things to one side of the jaws and not providing an even distribution of the clamping pressure. Also excessive pressure will cause racking. This is pretty normal on most vises, as most woodworkers do not use a second spacer to even out the clamping pressure. In a perfect world we would always clamp in the center of the jaws, and only use enough pressure to hold the work piece, and never hammer on our woodworking vise. But this is not a perfect world is it? |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of thread is on the vise screw? The original Record vise had a buttress thread. Are these square, buttress or acme |
Answer: | I looked into it a little further. The $69 one is sold by Amazon, which means they either buy them from Yost for resale, or more probably just place an order to Yost for drop-ship to the customer. The $115 ones (almost twice as much) are sold by a 3rd party, and are not Prime. The seller is located in Romania. Which means they are buying from Yost, doubling the price, and selling them as an "improved" version. It also means that it will probably take a long time to get them. It is also important to note that this vise is $66 if you order it directly from Yost, so *they* obviously don't have an improved version with over a hundred dollars. |
Question: | what kind of wood should the jaw faces be made of |
Answer: | This particular model has an I.D. of 0.925" so a 1" dowel will not fit, a 7/8" will fit with enough clearance to easily slide back and forth |
Question: | what is overall length of vise |
Answer: | The Vice Face mount (the part that the Vise Face will anchor to) is little under 2 1/2" inches tall and the Vise Plate mount (the part that anchors to your workbench) is about 2 1/4" tall. Those are rough measurements, but should help you get an idea of the size. Just measured mine with a caliper... The Vice Face mount is 2.417" tall and the Vise Plate mount is 2.14". Hope this helps! |
Question: | What is the width (the distance between the outermost edges) of the rods that go under the tabletop? And that piece holding them together? Thanks |
Answer: | Personal choice. It's entirely up to the user. |

Question: | My top is 2" thick. Would making a new wood piece for it be okay so it is flush with the top |
Answer: | Ian, did the research then when and looked at my vise which is the Fox D4327 and the threads are definitely buttress. |
Question: | does it have a quick release |
Answer: | We recommend you use a moderate to hard wood. Oak would make a good option for the jaw face plate. |
Question: | Does this vise include the wooden jaw face and the handle |
Answer: | I've got 2 inches of wood jaws and the overall length is right about 16", so I'd say 16-18". |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the bracket that mounts under the bench, (just the metal bracket |
Answer: | On mine, I measure a bit over 4-1/16" between outer extremities of the guide rods; the width of the plate and bracket that bolts to the face / underside of the bench I measure just about over 7-1/8" wide. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 30855 jorgensen bench vice. when i open it, it unwinds, but i have to manually open it. you have drawings that show it's inner workings |
Answer: | I do mill with it. The issue is that the thing was ground in with a belt sander. Mine was 0.080 out. Took 3 hours with a grinder to make it useable. |
Question: | I purchased this vise and the end caps of the handle don't fit at all, they're way too loose to stay on. Am I missing something? Do I need to glue them on |
Answer: | Yes, it does rack but that is inherent in any such vise. I have been very pleased with mine. If I clamp something on one side I use a board of similar size on the other side. |
Question: | does the jorgensen fit the wolfcraft workbench |
Answer: | After 3 years I can say that it’s held up quite well for me. |
Question: | How much depth is required to mount this vise in the closed position? The reviews say that you need about 9 in. of width but nothing about depth |
Answer: | The dog is iron as is the handle for the dog |

User questions & answers
Question: | how do you put it to a table |
Answer: | Assuming I understand the question correctly, these woodworkers vises are sometimes referred to as a "speed vise". The term aptly describes the feature that allows the user to quickly slide the vise open to the appropriate position. When turning the handle counter clockwise approximately one-half turn, there is a gravity-activated mechanism that disengages from the threaded bar, allowing the vise to slide open by pulling on the handle or outboard jaw. Provided you don't turn the handle clockwise, your vise should freely slide in and out to open and/or close snug to the work piece. Once you turn the handle clockwise, the mechanism reengages with the threaded bar, now requiring you to continue turning the handle to clamp down on the work piece. |
Question: | I do a lot of laminating operations that can weigh up to 200lbs. Can this vise take the weight? My last two have made it over 30yrs |
Answer: | Yes. I glued them with wood glue and predrilled and countersunk for a small screw in each end. Another alternative would be get a 12" black iron pipe and two end caps and get rid of the wooden handle provided. This would give you more leverage but you really don't need that much. Besides, if your shop is cold the pipe will be cold to the touch also. Your choice. |
Question: | What is the ideal bench top thickness so that the top edge of the jaws is flush with the bench top |
Answer: | The key dimension is the thickness of your top, as well as the area you need below it. It will fit one that is 2 1/4 thick. If you have a thinner top, you will need to glue a piece of wood to the underside so it is 2 1/4" thick. I have a 1 1/2 inch top and had to glue a 3/4" piece of wood to it. You also need to ensure you have an area under the bench that is free of supports and aprons at least 9 1/2" that you can mount it to. |
Question: | How deep/far back does the screw and cover extend under the bench surface? Where I want to place it I only have 10" from the front edge of the bench |
Answer: | 7 1/4" minimum in width. 13" minimum depth. I just went down and measured my vice. I love the vice. You need to mount it near the front edge of your bench to get the best use out of it. Left or right side, your choice. I also put 1x6x12" oak facing in the vice and it works great. |

Question: | Nice vise. How wide will the jaws open? thank you, gg |
Answer: | Sorry it took so long to reply, this is a really nice vise. To answer your question, it opens comfortably to 5 inches, but you can get it to 5 1/8. I wouldn't push it past that or the side alignment pieces may come out of their housings. Hope this helps! Have fun! |
