12 best garage floor paints
Garage floor paints are a type of coating specifically designed for garage floors. They are part of the category of interior and exterior house paints, falling under the broader spectrum of paint and wall treatments supplies used in home improvement projects. Here's what you need to know about garage floor paints:
Purpose: Garage floor paints are primarily used to protect and enhance the appearance of concrete garage floors. They serve as a barrier against moisture, stains, and chemicals while improving the overall aesthetics of the garage space.
Types: There are different types of garage floor paints available, with epoxy and latex paints being the most common options.
- Epoxy Paint: Epoxy garage floor paint is highly durable and resistant to chemicals and abrasion. It forms a tough, glossy surface that's easy to clean and provides excellent protection.
- Latex Paint: Latex-based garage floor paints are easier to apply and are more forgiving for DIY projects. They provide a less glossy finish but still offer some protection.
Application: Applying garage floor paint involves several steps:
- Surface Preparation: Proper surface preparation is crucial. This includes cleaning the floor thoroughly, repairing any cracks or imperfections, and possibly etching the surface to ensure good adhesion.
- Primer: Some garage floor paints may require a primer coat for better adhesion and performance.
- Paint Application: The paint is applied in multiple coats, allowing each coat to dry before adding the next. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific product.
Benefits:
- Protection: Garage floor paints create a protective barrier against moisture, stains, and chemicals, extending the life of the concrete floor.
- Aesthetics: They come in various colors and finishes, allowing homeowners to customize the look of their garage.
- Ease of Maintenance: Painted garage floors are easier to clean and maintain, making spills and stains less of a concern.
- Safety: Some garage floor paints can include additives to improve traction and reduce slipperiness.
Cost: The cost of garage floor paints varies depending on the type of paint, the size of the garage, and whether you choose a DIY or professional installation. Epoxy paints are typically more expensive than latex-based options.
DIY vs. Professional Installation: While garage floor painting can be a DIY project, professional installation is recommended for epoxy coatings, as they require more precise surface preparation and application techniques.
Maintenance: To keep a garage floor paint job looking its best, regular cleaning and occasional recoating may be necessary, especially in high-traffic areas.
Longevity: Well-maintained garage floor paints can last for several years, providing an affordable way to enhance the functionality and appearance of a garage.
In conclusion, garage floor paints are a practical solution for homeowners looking to protect and beautify their garage floors. They come in different types, each with its own advantages, and the key to a successful paint job is proper surface preparation and application techniques.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this on a front porch that is concrete but previously painted? The existing paint is perling |
Answer: | You mean peeling,no this product is for garage floors out of the sun, you’re going to have to scrape off all the loose paint, clean it real good and then they have exterior concrete primers for that you’re going to need and then the best patio paint they have two coats of the paint. |
Question: | Do i need to buy concrere etch separately |
Answer: | Acid etch is included in the kit. If your garage floor has oil stains, make sure you buy some degreaser and use it prior to etching. |
Question: | Has anyone applied this paint over a cement garage floor with a sealer coating without doing all the recommended acid treatment. How did it turnout |
Answer: | Not well. My contractor said he didn't need to do anything but scrub. But I did an acid wash the day prior, though probably not a perfect job. I stayed off for a week. Still peeled off where the tires sat. |
Question: | Is this floor slick when it is dry |
Answer: | It can be if it's not relatively clean. I've accidentally let some WD40 overspray get on the floor, and then later almost slipped and fell on my head! So - yes, certain spills can make it slippery. HOWEVER - it is NOT slippery if the surface is dry and relatively clean. Heck, WD40 or oil spills can make anything slippery. Just use your head and don't land on it! This coating is awesome - mine has been perfect for about 13 years now. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried to paint just the tire peeling area where Rust Oleum Epoxy shield has chipped away from the tire heat, using just a basic concrete paint |
Answer: | It won't work. Just like the epoxy. .. The surface needs a deep etching before painting. Otherwise it will just peel off. Plus the epoxy is stronger than the paint. So putting a weaker product in a high wear area will fail even faster. The solution is using the high mileage epoxy clear coat over the standard epoxy. Then it won't peel under the tires |
Question: | I have a work shop with a wood floor, would this stuff work using it on wood floor |
Answer: | I used it in my brand new 10x12 wood shed with wood floor. Worked great! Strengthened the CDX plywood. I park two motorcycles in the shed and so far have no issues in the two months since I put it down. I stirred in the grit and spread the paint chips. Put a layer on a wood shelf and work bench. Very happy. |
Question: | Can extra chips be added to this to give it a "granite" look |
Answer: | I added more chips but didn't give a granite look but still looked nice. Just need to do the clear coat on top when you use more chip, that locks all the chips in. |
Question: | is this enought for 2 car garage |
Answer: | No. I had very little left over after doing my one car garage. Also, i would look to another product, as this stuff is garbage. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My basement floor has some 1/2" cracks that are filled with self leveling caulk. Do I just paint over them |
Answer: | In general, wood that has been treated with pre-stain will absorb the stain more uniformly. More porous areas of the wood surface will absorb less stain and, overall, the stained wood may look lighter in color. However, the benefit is that the overall grain pattern of the wood will remain more visually apparent and overly-dark areas (splotchy areas) will be avoided. If you want a darker color after staining the wood once, wait 24 hours (this wait is important) and apply the stain a second time, following the instructions on how long to wait before wiping-off any excess stain. |
Question: | what is the voc content |
Answer: | No it will not. |
Question: | I put an epoxy paint on my garage floor about 20 years ago with no pealing. Can I apply this over the old epoxy paint without problems |
Answer: | No brush streaks after wiping. |
Question: | Is this the kit with the pouches or actual paint cans? Ive been told the pouches don’t yield as much paint |
Answer: | No, oil based stains...... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello. i have a different color of the same product already applied 2 years ago. can i apply the same product but a different color right in top of it |
Answer: | Definitely not, you should remove the caulk completely then using a hand held sander go over the areas were the caulk was, then using hydraulic cement fill in the cracks and with a trowel smooth them over. If the floor was never etched etch the entire area to be finished, before you use the hydraulic cement. |
Question: | Can i use this over the rustoleum epoxy shield i put down 8 years ago |
Answer: | Unknown about the CONTENT. . simply follow the directions. . .use some common sense and plenty of ventilation. |
Question: | Can this go directly over a painted garage floor after i use the "cleaner/etcher" from rust-oleum |
Answer: | check out this link and yes it would be best if you rent a floor sander with a Medium Grit do the whole floor lightly, this will insure proper adhesion, if you notice any of the previous finish breaking, popping up use a scraper and then sand feathering it to the old finish then use a suitable rusto-oelum primer specifically for use with this product. If you can give me you Zip Code perhaps I can lower the price if the shipping is much less then anticipated. https://www.rustoleum.com/homeowner/faqs/epoxyshield-garage-floor-coating-faqs/?page=2 |
Question: | Minimum temperature of aplication |
Answer: | I've done 2 garage floors, 4 years apart. First time it came with cans you had to mix but the one I did this year came with pouches. Pouches worked better, press hard and center divider opens and then knead until it is mixed. Cut off a corner and pour into the paint tray. |

Answer: | Depends on how much flake appearance you want? I like a lot of flake personally. I bought two lbs on top of what comes with the three floor kits. I ended up using only two kits worth of epoxy, and all five bags of flakes on a 900+sqft garage. |
Question: | Can you use the Rustoleum Anti-Skid along with these |
Answer: | I used the anti-skid after the chips and it did great. I didn't mix the anti-skid in the paint as suggested, I put it on top with the chips and it works great, |
Question: | I have a counter top pait set that I'm going to be using to paint my bathrooms. Could I mix this in with that to add some sparkle to my counter tops |
Answer: | Yea you can use it with about anything try it on a small piece see if you like it.. I just used in in my garage floor |

Question: | What percent of solids have |
Answer: | Thank you for reaching out! Insl-X Hot Trax is a satin finish. If wet, it will be slippery. Please reach out to us at inslx. reivews @ gmail. com, if you have any additional questions. |
Question: | will it work on a fiberglass boat floor |
Answer: | Hi, thanks for your question. Apply a thin even coat using 3/8” nap roller cover or a nylon/polyester brush. Allow the first coat to dry 24 hours before applying a second coat. Apply the second coat in a cross direction of the first coat to achieve uniform coverage. Always apply two finish coats for proper performance. |
Question: | How thick of coverage does this provide |
Answer: | Thanks for the question! Hot Trax is recommended for interior and exterior use on concrete floors, basement floors, garage floors, driveways, walkways, patios and pavers. Also can be used on masonry, stucco, block and brick. Please refer to the Technical Data Sheet on the Insl-x website for more information regarding specific substrates. |
Question: | This rustoleum product for 1 gallon is only the base? So you need to purchase the hardener separate? Or is this premixed |
Answer: | Hydrostatic pressure, which is what you are experiencing in your garage, is not something that can be stopped by any coating. Eventually, enough pressure will build up and cause dampness on the floor or push the coating away from the concrete. If using any coating, it must be understood that it will fail in a much shorter time if you have high levels of hydrostatic pressure. |
