Polyurethane Finishes:
- Polyurethane is a synthetic resin that forms a protective film when applied to surfaces. It is commonly used as a wood finish due to its excellent durability and resistance to wear, moisture, and chemicals.

Shellac Varnish:
- Shellac is another type of finish, derived from the resin secreted by the lac bug. It is often used as a wood varnish. While polyurethane provides a more robust and durable finish, shellac is appreciated for its traditional and warm appearance.
Finishes, Sealers, Stains:
- In addition to polyurethane and shellac, there are various other finishes, sealers, and stains available for different purposes. Finishes protect the surface, sealers provide additional protection, and stains alter the color of the material.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used on hardwood floor to make minor repairs |
Answer: | sorry I used it on bamboo sticks. it is more like a poly coat |
Question: | Can this be used over oil based paint |
Answer: | Yes, but it seems redundant. Most oil based paints would not need a polyurethane topcoat. But it would work. Beware the poly may add a yellowish cast to the paint due to its pale amber color, depending on the color of paint over which you apply it. |
Question: | What is the difference between the satin and the gloss and which is better for redoing a farmhouse dining set that will be stained a dark walnut |
Answer: | The gloss is almost always gonna give you a thicker coat. That means more protection for the wood. HOWEVER, I believe the satin finish is much “richer” .... and not as FLASHY as the gloss. With your dark walnut, I think it deserves the satin treatment.... but it’s easy to recommend ANYTHING when IT’S NOT MY TABLE!!! Regardless of what you choose, I hope you enjoy your your “new” furniture! |
Question: | Can i use a brush to apply it? i'm worried about lint from rags. the brush on poly says it is fast drying and i don't want it drying before i'm done |
Answer: | Wipe On Poly is designed to eliminate brush application. I use a small square of old tee shirt gathered around several cotton balls and tied with a twist tie. Wear a nitrile glove and hold the "daubber" in your had, dip it into a small qty. of the poly and proceed to wipe the surface. Watch the reflection on the surface as you apply the poly to ensure complete coverage. Allow to dry. Lightly sand with 320 grit and reapply. Repeat until you have the desired result. |
Question: | What's the difference between this and their other polycrylic "fast drying" - in the blue-green can |
Answer: | I think the blue can is water based. I buy the silver can in Clear Gloss and use it on 2 benches I have on my porch for over 10 years. |
Question: | Can this gloss polyurethane be used as a top coat for items painted with acrylic paint |
Answer: | YES—LIGHTLY SAND SURFACE BEFORE APPLICATION—400 —600 GRIT SANDPAPER |
Question: | Can you use this to repair a broken solar panel |
Answer: | I don't think so .This product is a clear protective coating for paint or stain on wood surfaces. |
Question: | Can this be us for an automotive clear top coat over a candy color enamel |
Answer: | I have used this product on motorcycle gas tank and plastics with great results. 6-8 coats works best, apply about 10-15 minutes after you spray your base coat and 10 minutes between coats with the polyurethane. You will get slight orange peel, just wet sand after several days and buff. |

User questions & answers
Question: | hello.. I have a trellis that is old that I want to protect, before my new wisteria grows over it.. will it work well on old redwood trellis |
Answer: | Don’t see why it wouldn’t. I used it on Outside wood pieces. |
Question: | Can i use this on my outdoor ornaments like gnomes, and resin fountains |
Answer: | This coating is for interior use. Polyurethane will yellow if exposed to direct sun light. Spar varnish, which is used to finish wood on boats would be a better option for outdoor use. |
Question: | Does this product react with white paint like some other products do |
Answer: | Generally speaking, you can apply polyurethane over most types of paint regardless of color. However, the paint MUST be fully cured, and the prep-work that you do with the painted surface (sanding or scuffing, etc) before applying is crucial for good adhesion. Normal polyurethane will probably give the white paint a yellow tint. A water-based poly or polycrylic would be better as there is no yellowing effect after applying it. |
Question: | What temperature can this stand up to or withstand |
Answer: | I have table tops in my house finished with polyurethane where I routinely do not use coasters for hot cups of coffee and tea and have done no harm to the finish. I would not put a casserole dish straight from the oven on the table, however; you are only asking for trouble. |

Question: | Does this product yellow over time |
Answer: | I used it on butcher block that was treated several times with mineral oil it came out perfect..they advise to sand down the wood if it's pretreated. So I'd sand it, and use the waterlox. Ps.... the waterlox IMO works 10000 times better than the mineral oil..I should have started with it |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be used outdoors on a deck railing that has varnish on it |
Answer: | I have used it on a kitchen table that was chalk painted and it dried clear and is very durable. I did 3 light coats but be sure each coat is dry before applying the next coat. |
Question: | Would this work to coat kitchen counters after painted |
Answer: | My wife works with polymer clay. Gloss gives depth and extra dimension to the projects. It also enhances metallic clays, such as gold and silver. She would never use satin or semi-gloss over metallics, because all they do is to dull the shine. Satin and semi-gloss are great for projects where a rough, unpolished, or "natural" look is desired, such as Steampunk projects. Hope this helps and best of luck with your creations! |
Question: | Can this polyurethane be used on kitchen counter tops? I am planning on painting mine. Feedback please |
Answer: | For my dresser, yes it turned it yellow. I used 4 thin layers of rustoleum linen white chalk paint after lightly sanding with no primer. I think the yellow somehow came through from the previous topcoat/stain because the areas that I sanded more thoroughly had less yellowing. I wonder if I had used a primer, if it would have blocked any bleed through from the previous finish. I’m still so surprised it got pulled up through 4 layers of chalk paint. |
Question: | Can it be used over Oil polyurethane |
Answer: | "Wiped on" is the only way I use Varathane now. I take a paper towel, dab it into the can, and carefully rub it onto the wood. I just did this with some repurposed cigar boxes the other night - came out beautiful. The finish seams to be a little more satiny than when you brush on the Varathane - the first project I did, I brushed on many coats and the pieces were a bit shiny. I prefer the wiped finish, it looks great on both of the Cigar Box Guitars that I've built and, as I mentioned, the two cigar boxes I just redid. You want to avoid putting on very thick layers, as well as leaving any gobs or lines of the finish, just like with anything else you're putting on wood. General rule of thumb with this stuff - if it looks white or creamy on the wood, it's too thick. Be careful sanding between layers, since the wiped on finish, for me, is often thinner than brushed on finish. Side note - The guitars only have Varathane on the neck. The wood for the necks came from an old dining room table, it's heavy and dense. The wood was stripped of finish, painted with a variety of colors and chemicals to reach a certain patina, and then I wiped on the Varathane. Came out beautiful, and the finish is holding up really well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used on top of chalk painted table and chairs |
Answer: | No, it’s an interior finish. Use marine varnish for anything subjected to weather and sunlight. |
Question: | Will this work well on a wooden gazebo to protect from weather and cracking |
Answer: | This is to use on wood. Is your counter wood? If it is & you're painting, not staining, not sure. But I think it should. I would try a small amount somewhere in a corner or some place where wouldn't be seen if didn't work well. |
Question: | I am trying to finish some carved spindles. Is this a better product than the usual fast drying paint on kind of the same make |
Answer: | I painted my bathroom counter tops and used this to seal them with. |
Question: | Why does the quart (2 pints) cost more than 2 individual pints? Shouldn't be the other way around? Just wondering |
Answer: | As long as the oil poly is fully cured (3 weeks or older). Just sand the oil with 220 grit and your good to go. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this yellow overtime with light colored surfaces |
Answer: | It is better to experiment first rather than ruin a good piece. Use chalk paint painted on a piece of discard wood to see how it works. It probably will work, but always experiment first. |
Question: | Viable for art layering or varnish |
Answer: | I would not recommend this for that .... first it would take a larg amount of polyurethane, second, not sure if it was for weather protection outside.... a better option might be to get a sealant like Thompson sealant... |
Question: | Can this be applied to photograph picture |
Answer: | I don't know what paint you are referring to. However, I would recommend using Minwax wipe on poly. I found that it works very well. It goes on easily, dries fast and leaves a smooth appearance. Just follow directions. |
Question: | Can I use this to touch up a very small patch on my bamboo floors where I accidentally removed the original water-based poly with acetone |
Answer: | buy the two pints, I have been doing that for a while, it is the same product |

Question: | Will this (9131 clear satin) be fine to apply to an old wood table without changing the color of the wood and yet seal it from moisture |

Question: | Can I use this over another stain if its dry and oil based |
Answer: | HelloIf you take sheen on a scale of 1-100, the flat will have a sheen of 10, versus the satin, that has a sheen of 35.Have a great dayWoodworkers Hardware |
Question: | Is this easy to apply to a wall ( vertically?) does this feel plasticy? Did you sand |

Question: | I'm at the end of a gallon of varathane 9132 satin. is this stuff the same product and use guide including 350 voc that i have been using |
Answer: | I have used it on unfinished wood, stained wood and wood painted a light color so that it wouldn't yellow and it would be protected from spills and stains. You most certainly could use it on a painted cabinet door. I would do 2 to 3 coats, with a very, very light sanding with 320 between coats. Do not sand the cabinet door before you put on the first coat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do you have to wait between coats |
Answer: | polyurethane seal on top of paint?I am not entirely sure if would work. Is the paint oil based? It also would depend on the bond between the surface and the paint. A general tip would be use a de-waxed shellac (sanding sealer) between the paint and the polyurethane. |
Question: | can this be applied to bare wood? Others have mentioned it's for painted surfaces |
Answer: | I used it on some shelves in some kitchen cabinets that were pressed wood. So far, it has done well. |
Question: | How can i prevent yellowing on white paint |
Answer: | Polyurethane is Polyurethane or if not then it's false marketing/advertising ! So yes you can use this on many different applications but also this stuff is usually very thick so test it on something other to get use to its texture. Rick |
Question: | What type of brush should I use for best application |
Answer: | Just plain old mineral spirits. Works beautifully. |

Question: | Can this be used over chalkboard paint |
Answer: | The label has precise instructions, but I believe it said that you can do coats Ina time window of 30 min-2 hours otherwise you need to wait 24 hours and do a light sanding between coats |
Question: | Can you use on fake flowers |
Answer: | Yes, Polyurethan can be applied to bare wood. I just finished butcher block counters with Poly. 6 coats (5 coats of gloss, 1 coat of semi-gloss for a stain finish) with sanding between each coat. |
Question: | what is minimum temperature to use successfully |
Answer: | I have not had this yellow on me yet. It usually only happens when in direct sunlight and have more than maybe 3 thick coats. Also, don't go heavy on coats. You don't want to leave white streaks when allowing it to dry. The white may not go away after drying and then may yellow over time. So do a couple thin coats and you will be fine. |
Question: | can this be used for lightly rusted metal |
Answer: | This is a very forgiving medium. Any brush will do. Just put a coat down quickly and don't worry about ridges, they will dissipate. The key is don't fuss and try to make a smooth surface, you''ll lose time. Very important to get the coat down evenly and quickly. Do not try to work back over a partially dry coat, or work back into your previous pass, it will ball up terribly. If you have a large surface, use a large brush. Work horizontally if at all possible. Vertically, use HVLP with a varnish tip. Move quickly and don't hesitate in your stroke to avoid 'sagging'. |
