12 best squares
Squares in the context of carpentry and measuring layout tools are essential instruments used for ensuring accurate and precise measurements and right angles in woodworking and various construction tasks. Here's what you need to know about squares:
Carpentry Squares: Carpentry squares come in various types, each serving a specific purpose:
a. Try Square: This square has a right-angled handle and a straight-edged blade, forming a perfect 90-degree angle. Carpenters use it to check and mark squareness and to make perpendicular cuts.
b. Carpenter's Square (Framing Square): A framing square is an L-shaped tool with a long blade and a shorter tongue. It's used primarily in framing and carpentry for measuring and marking angles and checking the squareness of corners.
c. Combination Square: This versatile tool combines a ruler with a sliding, interchangeable head that can be used as a square, miter square, depth gauge, or a marking gauge. It's handy for both layout and measurement tasks.
d. Speed Square (Rafter Square): A speed square is triangular in shape and often used in roofing and framing. It's designed to quickly and accurately measure and mark angles, especially for cutting rafters and roof pitches.
Material: Squares can be made from various materials, including steel, aluminum, or plastic. Steel squares are durable and provide precise measurements, while aluminum and plastic squares are lighter and more portable.
Measurement Units: Squares typically have measurements in both inches and centimeters, allowing for flexibility in various projects.
Accuracy: The accuracy of a square is crucial for ensuring precise cuts and angles. Quality squares are machined to high tolerances to maintain accuracy.
Maintenance: Keeping your squares clean and free from rust is essential to maintain their accuracy. Regularly check for squareness by testing against known straight edges.
Common Uses: Carpenters and woodworkers use squares for a wide range of tasks, such as marking out cutting lines, checking the squareness of joints, aligning pieces, and ensuring accurate angles.
Square Set: Many carpenters and woodworkers own a set of squares to cover various measurement and marking needs. This set may include a try square, framing square, and combination square.
Availability: Squares are readily available at hardware stores and online retailers, and they come in a range of sizes to suit different projects.
In conclusion, squares, whether it's a try square, framing square, combination square, or speed square, are indispensable tools in carpentry and woodworking. They help ensure accuracy, right angles, and precise measurements, making them essential for anyone working in these fields or involved in DIY home improvement projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | I just bought the 12" speed square, The slot that is supposed to hold the rise portion is way to large for the supplied 1/4" bolt? anyone else |
Answer: | Hi Tomer, Great question! This Speed Square, our model # S0101, does not include metric units of measurement. Our Metric Speed Square, model # NA202 (and available on Amazon.com) does have metric units of measurement. Hope that helps! The Swanson Team |
Question: | How can I request the EA 202 instruction book in German |
Answer: | Typically a framing square would be the most helpful with a roofing project. But if I had to choose one or the other, I guess the 12. While 7 is standard, it will not span the short dimension of the shingle. |
Question: | I am not a pro, I just want to do some wood working around the house here and there. Will this tool benefit me more than the 7inch version |
Answer: | Hi Henry, Absolutely, you can mark 45-degree cuts with our famous Speed Square! We manufactured it as a right triangle with that use in mind - its hypotenuse (the long side of the triangle) is an exact 45-degree angle. Thanks for your interest in our square! The Swnason Team |
Question: | Where is this square made |
Answer: | We proudly make all of our Swanson Speed Squares here in the United States. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone know the difference of this na202 and the eu202? they appear identical |
Answer: | Hi Rhona, Great question! We apologize for the confusion - these 2 metric squares are the same, and both come with our famous Blue Book (English only). The difference between the two is the information on the "card" (packaging) they ship with. Both include English and Spanish; the EU202 includes German and the NA202 includes Spanish. EU202 – English, German, French NA202 – English, Spanish , French We hope that helps! Thanks, The Swanson Team |
Question: | Are the degrees metric or just the linear rule |
Answer: | Hi Windell, There are "degrees common" that are just degrees and are outside hypotenuse. The next scale moving inward shows the degrees Hip-Val and are used when working in degrees for hip and valley rafters. The next scale is the metric common rafter scale followed by the hip-valley metric scale. Hope that helps! The Swanson Team |
Question: | How much does this thing weigh? 21 or 2.1 pounds? may there are mistake |
Answer: | Hi Alexey, Sorry for the confusion! A single unit of our Metric Speed Square officially weighs 1.03 pounds. Sometimes, we see resellers on Amazon who offer multi-packs of each item. That may be where you saw 21 pounds... Hope that helps! The Swanson Team |
Question: | How can I request the EA 202 instruction book in German |
Answer: | I can't help you with that but I can offer an alternative. Here is a PDF of the booklet http://www.oaklawnlibrary.org/documents/SpeedSquareInstructionBook2.pdf You can copy/paste whatever you need into a an online translator and make a printout. |

Question: | do these have measurements on them, sae or metric |
Answer: | There are no measurements on these squares |
Question: | Has anyone qualifed these for accuracy |

Question: | Are they square enough or not |
Answer: | Yes. I checked them with some precision squares at work and I would say are within 0.01° of 90°. |
Question: | So are these now stainless or what? Some past reviews suggest that they haven't always been |
Answer: | NOT stainless. Woodstock International (Andrew C, Sr Tech Support Rep, EN#981247) sent me an email on 10/31/17 stating "Our squares are made of ground mild steel". My box even said stainless which is why I asked the manufacturer |

Question: | How can one be $6.75 and a 2-pack is $49.90? Thanks, but if you are that careless I'll take my business elsewhere |
Answer: | Made in China. |
Question: | The head machined, but is the blade machined as well? Or just stamped with rough edges |
Answer: | I have both this combination square and a Starrett. The Starrett is, of course, much more expensive; however, the Starrett is more accurate and better made. For woodworking, there are some things for which accuracy is very important. The Irwin square I have is out of square by about 1/128" over its length. If I use this to set the angle of my table saw or to make sure my miter gauge is true. 1/128" over 12 inches may not seem like much but it's enough to cause parts I cut to not fit, particularly cutting a wide board. The Starrett combination square is one of the few tools that I use every day in my shop. I expect the Starrett to last my lifetime. In fact, I have a Starrett protractor head and rule that I inherited. It's decades old, but it's completely serviceable and a pleasure to use. |
