User questions & answers

Question: Would this meter NCV feature be useful at tracing a bad bulb in a garland
Answer: Agreed - Model 410 is shown as averaging and 430 is true RMS. For general use an averaging meter will usually suffice.
Question: Is anyone having trouble with the sensivity of the ncv? i have tried two of these meters and neither function as well as a stand alone ncv
Answer: When I bought it, I receive the EX 410 as the title suggests.
Question: What is the sensitivity of the device in sensing ac voltage? can one confirm the presence of 120, 208, 277, 480v 1p or 3p grounded emt, rigid, or pvc
Answer: It'll go up to 1382F degrees so that's more than enough to safely check the oven. I wouldn't leave the probe in the oven for a long period of time; just long enough to get a reading.
Question: So omni- if you don't have to pierce the wire to sense dc voltage- how close does the probe need to be? touching the wire insulation
Answer: I don't know about the packaging-it was a plastic blister pack with a fairly thick instruction book (sorry it's been a couple of years now I think since I got it)-but the meter itself, with leads, and battery, weighs 15 oz. by my scale. I think that's fairly consistent with the other answer listed here. Bueno suerte.

Extech EX430 11 Function True RMS Professional MultiMeter

Performs 11 basic and advanced measurements with +/-0.5 percent basic accuracy. View larger.
11 Functions in One Convenient Meter

This tool offers multiple functions that allows the professional worker to carry one meter into the field instead of several. The autoranging EX430 measures AC/DC voltage, AC/DC current, resistance, diode, continuity, capacitance, and frequency, all with +/-0.5 percent basic accuracy. This unit has a low current capability, measuring down to 0.1uA, and features input fuse protection and mis-connection warnings. A Type K thermometer is built in for surface or air temperature measurements.

CAT III test leads are included. And for greater convenience, the unit comes with a multi-position tilt stand, a Velcro strap for hanging, and a protective holster with handy test lead holder.

True RMS Prevents Distortion from Electronic Devices

It can be very difficult to make accurate current and voltage readings in industrial and commercial applications when electronic devices are present. Fluorescent lights, motor drives, computer power supplies, and other electronic systems can distort the AC waveform, making it hard for averaging meters to get an accurate read. True RMS uses a more advanced formula to compensate for this kind of distortion.

Large, Backlit LCD Screen For Easy Reading

Readings on the EX430 are displayed on large, backlit LCD screen with easy-to-read, 1-inch-tall digits. The 2,000-count screen offers high resolution over wide ranges, and features data hold. To preserve your batteries, the unit has auto power-off.

Compact, Ergonomic Design for Comfortable Handling

The EX430 is ergonomically designed and weighs less than 1 pound, so it offers a comfortable grip for one-handed operation. It measures a slim 7-2/5 by 3-1/5 by 2 inches (H x W x D), and uses one 9-volt battery.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the weight of the product, including the packaging
Answer: Auto ranging meters are usually expensive ones, with more functions like capacitance and temperature testing. So I think, its just a starter kit for basic functions/utilities. Hope it will help.
Question: This ex430a has only one selector dial setting for voltage (v) so how do you let it know whether you want to measure dc volts or ac volts
Answer: Take the caps off the ends of the leads. Plug the black lead into the "COM" port in the middle of the meter. Plug the red lead into either the "10A" or the "V ohm mA" port. Normally you would use the "COM" and the ""V ohm mA" ports. Only use the "10A" port when you are testing high current.
Question: This ex430a has only one selector dial setting for voltage (v) so how do you let it know whether you want to measure dc volts or ac volts
Answer: This will test the voltage at the receptacle, and the 'Test' button built into the GFCI will test it for tripping. To see if the GFCI (or any regular receptacle) is wired correctly, set the meter selector to the range higher that what you're testing, so the 200V AC scale (with the squiggly line above the 200) for checking 120V AC, and put one lead (either color) in the hot side of the receptacle (smaller slot) and the other test lead in the Neutral side (longer slot) and read 110 to 120 Volts, and then check Hot to Ground (rounded hole) and read 120V. Neutral to Ground should be zero unless the receptacle is wired backwards. Some receptacle testers used for checking for proper wiring of a receptacle by checking the three lights also have a button to push to check the trip of the GFCI which works the same as the 'Test' button on the GFCI receptacle, but is easier to push, plus also checks receptacles "downstream" of the GFCI to make sure that they are indeed wired properly to the load side of the GFCI and are therefore protected. The analog coil-type voltage tester or "Wiggys" can trip a GFCI by testing from the 'hot' side of the receptacle (smaller slot) to ground (rounded slot), but the electronic or analog multimeters don't draw enough current to trip the GFCI safety circuitry.
Question: Does anyone know where this meter is manufactured? What Country? Thanks much
Answer: Plug the black cord into the COM plug. Plug the red meter into the V mA plug. Set the rotary dial to 9V BAT (since we’re testing a 3V battery, should use 9V NOT 1.5V setting). Hold the red test pin to the + side of the 2032 battery.

Product features

Professional MultiMeter

The EX430 accurately performs 11 basic and advanced measurements allowing the user to carry one meter into the field instead of several.

Low Current Capable

This device comes equipped with low current capability, able to measure microamperes as low as 0.1uA.

Easy to Operate

The EX430 is lightweight and ergonomically designed for comfortable one-handed operation. The multi-position tilt stand and hanging Velcro strap allow the user to work with both hands free.

Accurate Readings

The EX430’s True RMS feature uses a more advanced formula to compensate for the kind of electronic interference commonly caused by fluorescent lights, motor drives, computer power supplies, and other electronic systems making it ideal for a variety of commercial or industrial applications.

User questions & answers

Question: I need to get alligator clips to use with this. Can you specify which alligator clips I can get that will fit? Thanks in advance
Answer: Hi P. Larsen,The range is 0.1 Ohm (min) to 40M Ohm (max).
Question: Will this read the voltage on a 24 volt thermostat
Answer: Yes the Ex330 comes with a temperature (k probe) Included along with the meter probes. This meter is very good for the price best bang for the buck if you do not need a true RMS meter.(You can watch a you tube video eevblog by dave jones meter shoot out it will be very helpfull) So Good Luck !!
Question: Does this MultiMeter actually measure AC . If so, How do you convert from DC to AC
Answer: I tested it with my 200Mhz Arb. Gen.- At 10Vpp sine and square it seems to max out at ~33Mhz. - At 5Vpp it maxes out at ~23Mhz.- At 2.5Vpp it maxes out at ~13Mhz.My Arb. Gen. Maxes out at 10Vpp. The EX330 may go up to 40Mhz, but it is going to need a signal at more than 10Vpp so I'm not sure how useful this meter would be.
Question: Can this test all household batteries; A, AAA, C, D, etc
Answer: I am not certain what you mean by grounding your bed? What it the grounding point? Is it a copper ground rod driven to an appropriate depth. Or are you grounding to some other ground plane. But checking continuity of the ground wire to the grounding point is about all you can do with that meter.
