14 best energy monitors
Energy monitors, also known as electricity monitors or power monitors, are devices used to measure and track the consumption of electrical energy in a residential or commercial setting. These devices provide valuable information about how much electricity is being used, when it is being used, and how it contributes to energy costs. Here's what you need to know about energy monitors:
Purpose: The primary purpose of an energy monitor is to help users understand their electricity consumption patterns. By monitoring electricity usage in real-time or over specific time periods, individuals and businesses can make informed decisions to reduce energy consumption and save on utility bills.
Real-Time Data: Many energy monitors provide real-time data on electricity usage. They connect to a home's electrical system and display information on a digital screen or through a mobile app, allowing users to see how much electricity is currently being used.
Historical Data: In addition to real-time data, energy monitors often store historical usage data, which enables users to track energy consumption patterns over time. This data can help identify trends and make adjustments to reduce energy waste.
Cost Tracking: Some energy monitors estimate the cost of electricity usage in real-time or over a billing cycle. This feature helps users understand the financial impact of their energy consumption and make cost-saving decisions.
Energy Efficiency: Energy monitors can highlight areas where energy efficiency improvements can be made. Users can identify energy-intensive appliances or behaviors and take steps to reduce energy waste.
Alerts: Many modern energy monitors offer customizable alerts. For example, users can set up notifications to alert them when energy usage exceeds a certain threshold, helping them manage their consumption.
Types: There are different types of energy monitors, including plug-in monitors that connect to individual appliances or outlets, whole-home monitors that measure the electricity usage of an entire residence or building, and smart meters that communicate usage data directly to utility companies.
Installation: The installation of energy monitors varies depending on the type and model. Plug-in monitors are typically easy to install, while whole-home monitors may require professional installation if they are integrated into the electrical panel.
Data Access: Many energy monitors allow users to access their data remotely through smartphone apps or web portals. This remote access makes it convenient to monitor energy usage even when away from home or the workplace.
Energy Conservation: Energy monitors can serve as valuable tools to promote energy conservation and sustainability. By providing awareness and insights into electricity usage, they encourage individuals and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint.
Energy monitors are useful tools for promoting energy awareness, reducing energy consumption, and ultimately lowering electricity bills. They empower users to make informed decisions about their energy usage and can contribute to a more energy-efficient and sustainable future.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be set up to use and view on a desktop computer or does a person have to have a cellphone |
Answer: | You need to add some info about your spa before you can get an absolute answer. But according to the rating tag on this unit it can handle 15 amps input and 15 amps output. That means it can handle a load of 15 amps at 120 VAC. If your spa is over 15 amps, the answer is no. 15 amps at 120 VAC = 1800 watts. If you spa is at or above 15 amps, or 1800 watts, don't us it on the spa. To be safe and 100% accurate, refer to the spa user manual. |
Question: | Does this work with a 240 line |
Answer: | It's not made for plugging into the grid in the manner you describe. Its design is intended to measure consumption of individual appliances up the monitor's maximum current/power rating. I have used such a device on a power strip to measure multiple appliances at once, but kept total draw of loads within the monitor's limits. |
Question: | Any monthly app fees |
Answer: | Don't need a pen pushing where it says reset |
Question: | Is there a subscription needed |
Answer: | I recommend that you call the company to confirm your question. |

Turning Power Into Knowledge
Emporia has developed the next generation of the Vue Energy Monitor. Committed to bringing the best value as affordable possible, the Vue provides everything you need to monitor your entire home's energy usage in real time. See how much electricity your home is using anywhere, anytime.
Monitor Individual Circuits without the Guesswork
Add individual 50A sensors to your Vue to monitor up to 16 individual circuits — providing accurate energy use for the appliances and equipment that is important to you. No guesswork. No trying to discern energy signals from background noise. Just simple, easy, and accurate insight into your home. 50A sensors are sold separately and also sold in bundles with the Vue.
Measure Solar Net Metering without Extra Hardware
Solar net metering is built right into the Emporia Vue. The simple Emporia iOS and Android app will show when and how much electricity you are consuming and when and how much excess energy you are producing back to the grid — giving you keen insight into the impact of your solar panels as they relate to your energy use.
Installs in the Electrical Circuit Panel of your Home
The Gen 2 Vue installs in your home's electrical panel using CT sensor clamps that go around your mains and the other circuits you wish to monitor. DIY instructions included, but a professional electrician is recommended. The Vue system is designed for field installation in a switch enclosure as per 312.8(B) of the 2017 NEC regarding Power Monitoring Equipment.
Do You have Metal Bus Bar Mains in Your Panel?
Our Flexible Current Sensor solution is now available on the EmporiaEnergy website. These current sensors are meant to replace the 200A main sensors that ship with Gen 2 Vues. They employ a bendable Rogowski coil with a 1.4” (36mm) opening that can fit around most bus bars or into tight spaces where a standard current sensors clamp cannot fit. Installing the Flexible Current Sensors is still dangerous, and Emporia highly recommends that installation be performed by a licensed electrician or other qualified professional.
Add Emporia Smart Plugs to Your Vue
Emporia Smart Plugs (sold separately) can be added to your Vue system to help you to not only monitor the energy of lighting and small appliances, but to also set timers, schedules, and turn them on and off from anywhere, any time with the Emporia app.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the app on my wife ios phone and my android phone be simultaneously logged in to the app |
Answer: | Yes it will that is what I use mine for. It gives me an AC reading right between the Grid Ready inverter and the power grid. |
Question: | Does the app function when outside the home? Ie. Will I be able to see real-time data for my home while away at work |
Answer: | The P4400-vp can be shipped on international orders. Great Britain and France, even the Island of St. Martin Dutch side (120VAC) and St. Maartin French side (240VAC). have significantly different power from the US. The French and Great Britain use power 240VAC "Phase/ or live leg to ground" instead of the US "live leg to live leg" for 240VAC. Even though this unit is not usable for 240volt it is cleared for international use since the unit tests on phase to ground 120VAC and this is what we use in the US. It would appear that this has to do with the way the ground (round plug) and neutral are utilized in the device. |
Question: | does it sum up power usage for a period of time, like every month |
Answer: | What I understand of resolution on this context is: the increment steps of the measure. A 10 resolution will measure either 0, 10, 20, 30 .... but never a number in between. |
Question: | Is it truly worth 300 bucks |
Answer: | Not really. If you are sure which range is best you should start high and work your way down until you get the accuracy you need. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does sense work on 3-phase 220v outside us |
Answer: | I haven't tried it myself, but the manual says:Resetting the self-learning operation (cancel all pairings between outlets and remotes)To cancel all pairings of the outlet so that no remote or button will control it, please follow these instructions:1) Remove the outlet from the wall/power socket2) Press and hold the Learning button3) Place the outlet back into the wall/power socket while still holding the Learning button4) Hold the button for 5 seconds or until the light begins to flash5) You will see the red light flash rapidly a few times and then stop signifying the outlet has been resetSo it looks like you clear the wall outlet and not the remote - hope it works. |
Question: | I have 400A split-service (2 200A panels) and a generator. Can I place 1 set of ct’s on the 400a main in the meter box, and 1 ct set on the generator |
Answer: | I don't think so. The remote that comes with them works well, though. If your phone has an IR blaster, there might be some way to get it to work. |
Question: | Can this be used offline, i.e. with no internet connection |
Answer: | It just means you pushed the button and it is working correctly. |
Question: | What is the difference between sense flex home energy monitor package and sense energy monitor with solar package |
Answer: | Although it says it is rated at 16amps, I personally would not put a motor on it that is rated at 26 amps because: 1. There is no reserve so I would be concerned about it holding up, and 2. Most/many motors draw more current starting up than they do while running and might therefore cause it to exceed the 16amp rating an fail. That's my opinion. |

The SmartShunt is an all in one battery monitor, only without a display. Your phone acts as the display. The SmartShunt connects via Bluetooth to the VictronConnect App on your phone (or tablet) and you can conveniently read out all monitored battery parameters, like state of charge, time to go, historical information and much more. Alternatively the SmartShunt can be connected and be read by a GX device. Connection to the SmartShunt is made via a VE.Direct cable. The SmartShunt is a good alternative for a BMV battery monitor, especially for systems where battery monitoring is needed but less wiring and clutter is wanted. The SmartShunt is equipped with Bluetooth, a VE.Direct port and a connection that can be used for: monitoring a second battery, midpoint monitoring or a temperature sensor. The SmartShunt is available in 500A. The 1000A and 2000A will follow later this year.

User questions & answers
Question: | If I have two batteries in parallel can this still monitor both |
Answer: | It is possible to connect more SmartShunts to the Cerbos GX. But in the settings, there is only one “Master-SmartShunt” and the VRM-Dashboard can only show this one. The second one you can only see in the device list, remote console or extended View. To calibrate the SmartShunt you have to make this local via victron connect (Bluetooth) For now you have to read the system via the battery voltage. Kind regards Mathias Perseis / Technik Offgridtec GmbH |
Question: | How much shunt for three 100ah batteries in parallel - 500amp, 1000amp, what size |
Answer: | Don't confuse 500-amp shunt capacity with battery amp-hours; they are different units of measure. Shunt capacity means it can handle 500 amps at one time. Battery amp-hours means that it can deliver 100 amps for one hour before it is 100% used up... or it can also mean that it can deliver 200 amps for a half hour before it is used up. So, which shunt you buy is not driven by the amp-hour rating of your batteries, but by the amount of amps you are going to draw at any one time, and that depends on *your* electrical usage. |
Question: | Does this remain powered on at all times, stealing power from batteries, in order to power the BlueTooth capability |
Answer: | The shunt stays on to monitor the battery continuously. I don’t have the spec sheet with me to check how much it draws. All I know is that it is hardly noticeable for my setup. Might be less than 100mA. |
Question: | I have this Installed on my car, but it seems to die every hour or so. Is there a shut off or vibration problem |
Answer: | I have installed this in my RV and have had no issues. Perhaps your connections are vibrating loose. |
- Electricity usage monitor: Monitor is the killer of the high-cost energy appliance, helping you lower power consumption and save money.

Question: | Will this meter read the wattage im putting back into the grid |
Answer: | No. |
Question: | How do you reset the usage? I don't need to reset the cost Kw/h, just the running totals |
Answer: | Hello, this usage will be reset all, and then you could set the cost again, if you have any problem when reset, please tell us the details, you could send the email to [email protected], we will be surely responsible to this problem. thanks |
Question: | Does it for remote by a computer or cell phone?will it work with 220v |
Answer: | Negative. Most of these devices are rated up to 1875 watts. That's 125 volts times 15 amps. If your electrical service panel is up to code, the 15 amp breakers in it should flip off at 1440 watts. That's 80% of 1800 watts (120 volts times 15 amps). I have one window unit wired for 20 amps...that's 1920 watts safely. I have used these devices with my 20 amp outlets and but please don't make a habit of using it continuously, it will get hot and potentially start a fire. There are 220V meters out there but I'm not familiar with any of them. Take care! |
Question: | Is this model 220v (Non US) AC compatible? If not, which model is? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | This is a 120-volt meter. I recommend that if you want a plugin meter than can handle 240 volts you look one for the appropriate electrical receptacle on the front. This one clearly has a standard 120-vold outlet receptacle. |
Question: | does this work on 220v 60hz house outlet |
Answer: | According to product specifications Line Frequency range is 47.0 - 63 HZ. If your outlet is configured to accept the P4460 you should be able to use it. Before you buy you may want to ask the manufacturer this question. |
Question: | Can it be set for a period of time (such as 24 hours) and record usage only then |
Answer: | Yes, this records the total power used by the device whether it is on or off or any mix. You just need to go to the screen kwh used. record the beginning # and at the end of time period (say 24 hours) record the end #. that is how many kwh it used. I used several of these for months to record the A/C use in our shared apt and paid the landlord for the a/c used so they don't complain about my electricity used. great device. now however, my apt has a 20a a/c wall unit. while you could get converter to regular 3 prong, not sure if this unit will go to 20 amps.Others who said no are simply ignorant of this devices menu. It ALSo shows, when on watts menu, the watts used when a device is running, or is off. so you can see how much your a/c or toaster oven or giant screen tv uses when on, or off.It also keeps the power kilowatt hours used even if unplugged or power goes out in its internal memory. so you can simply record the kilowatt hours at the begin of a month, then at the end of the month, subtract and multiply by your cost of electricity for the total $ / month the device uses. The dork who was our landlord at the time thought his electric water heater for tea was less expensive to use than nuking a cup of water for a minute to heat it up in the microwave. popped this device on it and they were almost identical in total power used to heat a cup of water. The same idiot who was complaining about this left his rear projection tv on when he wasn't around, and they use alot more electricity than today's flat panel screens. If you want to record the power usage of some device over time, you'll want to plug this device into a short extension cord. if you plug it directly into the wall then you have to lie down on the floor to read the kilowatt readings. I just put the readings into a spreadsheet when I was recording monthly electricity usage. |
Question: | To how many decimal places does this one display for Watts |
Answer: | This EZ model does NOT display how many Watts you device is pulling... It displays how may kwh have been used thus far, to the 1/10th decimal place. So, when you first plug something in is shows ZERO, since not enough time has passed to show kwh used yet. This is a HUGE feature left off this device. For me, I want to plug something in to a meter like this and be able to instantly see how many Watts the device uses, and this EZ meter version does not do that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | For homes with Solar, does it show how much the solar is generating or just the direction |
Answer: | Yes, it will show the watts or kW and the amperage. On solar it will be displayed as a negative number and it will also provide a Balance number showing the difference between produced kW and and kW being currently used. |
Question: | Does this work for houses with solar |
Answer: | Yup, it goes from blue to green indicating sending back to the grid instead of consuming, and accordingly the amount of kWh goes from a positive number to a minus number. |
Question: | How close to the electric meter does the device need to be |
Answer: | Relatively close. I originally plugged into an outlet in our master bedroom, well within 25ft of the meter, but it couldn’t connect. I moved it to my garage just on the other side of the wall from the meter and it works great. |
Question: | Will this work with pge gas |
Answer: | NO it only senses your electric smart meter |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it mearsure watts |
Answer: | Time/Watts/Cost Time/Volts/Cost Time/Current/Power Plus two more modes |
Question: | How do I install batteries and what size battery |
Answer: | No visible battery door, hatch. Since it plugs into power when in use, if there is a battery, it's charging when being used. |
Question: | Is this rated for 15a/1800w continuous? in other words, what happens if you connect it to an ev charger, which will draw 15a all the time |
Answer: | Yes, rated15A continuous. Only draws about 1 watt (0.008 amps) by itself. Basically, it will draw what the EV charger draws. If you get one, you will see that the EV charger draws max load early, then power draw dwindles as the car gets closer to full charge. It will not draw 15A continuously. You will also be able to measure the watt-hour capacity of your electric vehicle's battery storage. Plus it makes you cool without smoking cigarettes. Very cool. |
Question: | Having an issue with 2 outlets in my house and I need to track the power at them. When they lose power and when it came back.Do these keep history |
Answer: | I dont think these are what your looking for. They do a great job tracking power used, but there isn't a function for testing outlets. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why won't my plug connect to Alexa |
Answer: | This version is meant for heavier loads. The round version is meant to handle a load of 800 watts, where this version is 1500 watts. The heavier loads are common in things with a heating element. Like space heaters, hair dryers, and cooking appliances. The round ones are fine for lighting and most electronics. This version also has a built in nightlight feature that can be controlled independently from the plug. |
Question: | Monitor ongoing wattage? not just monthly but actively |
Answer: | No.. you do not. After setting them up the first time you can unplug them and move them anywhere. I never had to reprogram any of them even with a power failure. Very stable and reliable. |
Question: | Is there an example online of what data can be exported from the app and in what format |
Answer: | Yes, internet is only required for remote control. There is a manual button on the unit as well. |
Question: | Whats the difference between gold and silver and the regular package? I'm assuming gold would handle more voltage |
Answer: | Yes. This also allows moving to a different outlet without re-establishing the connection to the wireless network. Another brand I have requires re-connecting whenever power is lost. |
