11 best gas propane heaters

Gas propane heaters are a type of heating system commonly used in residential and commercial settings. They are designed to provide warmth and comfort by burning propane gas to produce heat. These heaters are often used as supplementary heating sources or as the primary source of heat in certain applications. Here are some key points about gas propane heaters and their accessories:

  1. Fuel Source: Gas propane heaters use propane as their primary fuel source. Propane is a clean-burning and efficient fuel that is stored in tanks and delivered to the heater through pipes or hoses.

  2. Types of Gas Propane Heaters: There are several types of gas propane heaters available, including wall-mounted heaters, freestanding heaters, radiant heaters, and forced-air heaters. The choice of heater type depends on the specific heating needs and the space where it will be used.

  3. Heating Capacity: Gas propane heaters come in various heating capacities, measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). The heating capacity you need will depend on the size of the area you want to heat.

  4. Safety Features: Safety is a top priority with gas propane heaters. They are equipped with safety features such as oxygen depletion sensors (ODS) that automatically shut off the heater if oxygen levels in the room drop below a safe threshold. Some models also have tip-over switches to prevent accidents if the heater is knocked over.

  5. Ventilation: Proper ventilation is essential when using gas propane heaters indoors. Inadequate ventilation can lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide, which can be dangerous or even lethal. It's important to follow manufacturer recommendations for ventilation and placement.

  6. Thermostat and Controls: Many gas propane heaters come with built-in thermostats and controls, allowing users to set the desired temperature and maintain a comfortable environment.

  7. Accessories: Various accessories are available for gas propane heaters, including propane tanks, hoses, regulators, and outdoor covers for protecting heaters when not in use. It's important to use compatible accessories and follow safety guidelines when connecting and using these components.

  8. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient operation of gas propane heaters. This may include cleaning the burner and pilot assembly, checking for gas leaks, and inspecting the ignition system.

  9. Energy Efficiency: Gas propane heaters are generally considered energy-efficient and cost-effective heating options. However, their efficiency can vary based on factors such as the heater's design, insulation in the space being heated, and the quality of propane used.

  10. Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the safe and effective operation of gas propane heaters. It is often recommended to have a qualified HVAC technician or gas service professional install the unit.

Gas propane heaters provide a reliable and versatile heating solution for a wide range of applications, including homes, workshops, garages, warehouses, and outdoor spaces. When used correctly and maintained properly, they can offer efficient and comfortable heating during cold weather.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i hook up to my unvented propane log gas heater
Answer: Yes, you can use this to hook up your log gas heater. GlobalTowne is an authorized Mr. Heater distributor.
Question: Can we use this hook up for propane
Answer: Mr. Heater F271239 One-Stop Universal Gas-Appliance Hook-Up Kit is a suave kit designed to give the consumer any possible gas connection, and has several different sized gas fittings. You should be able to connect directly to your propane supply line with ease.
Question: my gas heater will light but will only stay lit for a short time. I've cleaned. the apiture. with alcohol. but that doednt seem to help. long term
Answer: The oxygen sensor may be turning it off. Make sure there is airflow around the unit. At altitudes of approx. 4500+ it may shut off for much the same reason. Blow out the Aperture with air. There is a little hole down on the gas nozzle for that purpose. Canned air is best. A compressor may break something. I had a friend who just blew it out with his breath and it worked better. Clean the entire unit of dust and debris. Check the gas debris pipe and empty the sediment. Check your bottle, it may be near empty, or the control valve may be partially closed.
Question: Is the valve 1/2" FIP to 1/2" flare? Is the connector 1/2" ID? What are the EXACT specifications on each of the adapters? Shocked it sells W/ no info
Answer: The description says 3/8 and 3/8 but the one I got was 1/2 x 1/2 with adapters. It says universal but for me probably not since I actually needed 3/8 female and this only comes with 3/8 male so I will have to spend more money to make this work.
Question: Can you HANG this from something
Answer: YES you can hang this heater. It's been done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZsVX6mh8O4
Question: Does anybody have trouble lighting this heater? Seems I need to hold the ignition button in for a minute and it really hurts my thumb
Answer: Hey Spike, I agree with Thomas W. Mine wouldn't start on the first try either. You have to hold the ignition button down, wait a few seconds, then depress again. It's kind of a pain, but it works. A more annoying issue for me was wanting to use it in my golf cart, but with every tiny bump, the safety feature kicked in and off it went. So, it is safer for home use. For the cart, I bought the Coleman Catalytic Heater with the special holder that fits in the cup holders. It's more quiet too. Stay warm!
Question: With an adapter hose can it be used with a large propane cylinder
Answer: Not a problem. Make a 10"x10" box. Nail 2x6 together in the shape of a U. Then put 3/8" inch plywood on top and bottom (3/8" a must on top). Then make a 2 1/4" hole in the center of the top plywood. Next screw the main heater assembly into the filter with the top plywood in between (the two should come together snug leaving a very small separation which will allow the heater to rotate with no chance of a leak but still be secure). Then attach the hose and tank. This box allows for a large tank to be attached, the heater can rotate and the tipsy problem is gone.. Just remember to turn off the tank first to burn up the gas in the line before turning off the heater.
Question: Has anyone used it tent camping? I'm afraid of fire and fumes, but the cub scouts insist in camping in sub freezing temps
Answer: I used it last summer (2017), at night We went to bed late around 1:00 am, and usually by 5:00 am the 1lb tank is already empty and it's went the temp is the lowest, I spent about a tank per night, kept our 8 person tent warm, we have ventilation at the top and all the heat went up but I rather have ventilation that non at all, I'll probably wake up at 5 and replace the propane tank. We camped I bigbear, CA and it was cold at night, I might try an electric heater plugged into my Honda but still you have Carbon monoxide coming from the generator.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers
Answer: For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired)
Question: can i hook a large propane tank to his
Answer: Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port).
Question: How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister
Answer: Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty.
Question: Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning
Answer: As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this item be returned
Answer: I'm sure it can be.
Question: does it work in a box deer stand
Answer: I am sure it will. I use mine in a moving golf cart with a cover on it, and it works great. You need some ventilation though. The box deer stand shouldn't be airtight.
Question: Can you use a 16 oz cylinder
Answer: 14.1 oz or 16 oz ... “Take your pick”... [have a photo here to ‘add’ to that, but can’t seem to find a way to upload it...]
Question: New unit and new propane tank. Unit ignites but does not catch and stay lit, any suggestions
Answer: I have different model from Texsport. On mine the instructions say to turn the heat to high while holding in the red button. It would probably work on a lower setting, but would take longer to warm the bulb.

User questions & answers

Question: if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought
Answer: I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater.
Question: I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know
Answer: The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place.
Question: Would this heater work in a 2 car garage
Answer: In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet.
Question: Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time
Answer: It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on.
Question: I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this
Answer: You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts
Question: Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower
Answer: The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT
Question: Will this work with a 20 pound tank
Answer: Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety
Question: So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work
Answer: It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual.

Radiant Vent Free Heaters

Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.

Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.

There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.

The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.

Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers

Question: Hi , does it come with the tank
Answer: That depends first I have no idea what a "Supermarket propane Tank" is, if it is a standard 20lb propane tank which you see on every gas grill and on this illustration then I can answer that question. 1 gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds, a 20 pound tank weighs 17 lbs empty and 37 lbs with 20 lbs of propane in it, a "full" 20 lb cylinder should have 4.7 gallons or propane in it.Now we have to discuss this model of Mr. heater which has two burners, you can run it on one or both and you can set it for low medium or high which is many differentt total burn times, I will assume either one or both with no mixture of settings.Single burner approx. operating hr.: 52/Low 37/Med 30/HighBTU output: 8,000 12,000 14,000Double burner approx. operating hr.: 25/Low 18/Med 15/HighBTU output: 16,000 24,000 28,000
Question: Can the 2 heating heads be rotated and if so, independently of each other
Answer: No propane tank included.
Question: do you need electric to ignite
Answer: If I were you, I would open the box in the kitchen or living room, Inventory the parts, to see if anything is broken, then close the box, tape it up and put it together in the spring. The only breakable part is the glass tube, and mine was well protected in the box. If a part is broken, now would be the time to get it replaced-before you start putting it together and discover it three months from now!
Question: The burners light but switch off after i release the safety shut off valve plunger, no matter how long i keep it pushed in. it should stay lit
Answer: Very easy. May have taken 30 min at most. instructions were very good. Parts laid out in an easy to use fashion and well labeled
Question: How long does a normal supermarket propane tank last with this unit
Answer: The heater is 88" tall, the heat reflector is 18" square and the base is 19" square. The Hiland Heavy Duty Waterproof Heater cover fits it perfectly. No Muss, No Fuss in covering the heater. The cover is very sturdy and looks great in Mocha color. I hope this helps!

User questions & answers

Question: can this convert from 1lb to 40lb tank
Answer: Should be a standard size fitting.
Question: Can you use this for refilling the 1lb propane canisters with the bigger 20lb propane tanks
Answer: Rusty, This hose will work. The size is correct. However, I purchased this hose: Gas One 4 ft High Pressure Propane 0-20 PSI Adjustable Regulator with QCC-1 type Hose - Works With Newer U.S. Propane Tanks. I had to return two of the hoses you are asking about, because I could not control the flames. With the new hose, the grill works perfectly again. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Question: Will it fit on a liquid propane tank to weber 50060001 q1000 liquid propane grill
Answer: Approximately 27 inches of water column
Question: Mine leaks where it connects to the propane tank. Should there be a gasket or something in the connector to form a seal
Answer: I used it on my Weber Genesis 310 grill, and the flames were insane, had to go out and by a Weber brand regulator to get proper flames.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a warranty
Answer: Hello, Both devices operate utilizing standard AA alkaline batteries. If you have any other questions, please contact the AcuRite Loyalty Team at 262-729-4850. We are happy to assist you. Thank you. Have a great day, Jeff AcuRite Loyalty Team
Question: How many hours will one full tank run with this unit on medium setting
Answer: Whatever, the one I have is very dim and I can only view it by holding it. The thing says it has backlight, the manual says it, but it's not a feature. It also has a button "Signal" on the back that is not explained anywhere. It seems to work well enough, but it's impossible to read the screen in most places I have put it or hung it up.
Question: can this be used on a covered porch or screen porch
Answer: The manual suggests that the sensor can be out in the weather, as long as it isn't in the pouring rain. AcuRite sells a protective unit, here on Amazon, for a reasonable price to protect the sensor from full sun and rain and snow. Use Lithium batteries if you have it out in weather colder than 40 degrees (F). Right now it's 44 degrees on my patio in southern California.
Question: I admire everyone who has been able to get this thing started. The unit doesn't allow you to push in the knob once it hits Hi. Help please
Answer: Yes, the back is flat and it has a recessed hole in the back so it can be hung on a nail or screw. Once hung, it sits perfectly flat against the wall.

User questions & answers

Question: can a thermostat or external termocouple be adapted for control
Answer: This product does not have a pilot. So putting a thermostat would not work to regulate heat in the area do you desire
Question: Is this natural gas or propane gas
Answer: This is a propane heater
Question: Is this heater strong enough to keep people warm on a small outdoor deck space
Answer: I don't recommend using this heater outdoors for warmth for obvious reasons. I use this in my garage when I'm woodworking with the garage door cracked. When the outside temp is 25-30 degrees, my garage heats up to around 70 within 20 minutes. This is my opinion.
Question: Does propane continue to flow when the switch is turned off
Answer: The switch operates the fan only. Propane stops flowing when you turn the knob to off on the propane tank.
