14 best floating floor underlayments
Floating floor underlayments are essential components of many flooring installations, particularly for laminate, engineered wood, and some types of luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or tile (LVT) flooring. These underlayments serve several important purposes:
Moisture Barrier: Many underlayments include a moisture barrier layer to protect the flooring from moisture that might seep up from the subfloor. This is especially important in areas like basements or bathrooms where moisture is a concern.
Sound Absorption: Underlayments help reduce noise transmission between floors by dampening sound. This is especially important in multi-story buildings or apartments to minimize sound disturbance.
Subfloor Imperfection Compensation: They provide a cushioning effect that can help compensate for minor imperfections in the subfloor. This results in a smoother and more comfortable surface for walking.
Insulation: Some underlayments have insulating properties that help regulate temperature, making the floor feel warmer and more comfortable underfoot. This is particularly beneficial in colder climates.
Durability: Underlayments can extend the lifespan of the flooring above by acting as a buffer and preventing excessive wear and tear.
Ease of Installation: They often have features that make the flooring installation process easier, such as built-in adhesive strips or overlapping seams.
There are various types of underlayments available, including foam, rubber, cork, and combination underlayments, each with specific qualities suited for different applications. The choice of underlayment depends on factors like the type of flooring, the subfloor material, and the specific needs of the installation.
Before purchasing an underlayment, it's important to consider factors like the flooring manufacturer's recommendations and local building codes. Additionally, installation instructions provided by the flooring and underlayment manufacturers should be followed carefully to ensure proper performance and warranty coverage.
When installing a floating floor, selecting the appropriate underlayment and installing it correctly can significantly impact the overall quality and longevity of the flooring installation.

Question: | I plan to staple down 3/8" engineered flooring in the upstairs of a home over vinyl flooring. Will this underlayment work underneath |
Answer: | If your floor is level, just pull up the old vinyl, put down this underlayment, and float the floor. There were a few areas where I had to staple to the subfloor over this underlayment, and it worked just fine. It's not that difficult, and I am certainly not a pro. |
Question: | How is it different than roberts 70-193 super felt underlayment 360-feet square roll for sound reducing and absorbing ? Is it just bigger role |
Answer: | Hi There! The felt is going to have an stc rating of 66, will be 3mm thick and will be made of felt with the built in vapor barrier. The Roberts First Step underlayment is going to also be 3mm thick, with a stc rating of 67. This underlayment will be made up of two sheets of plastic with polypropylene foam beads in between those. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this "safe," are there chemicals on it, would it cause allergy, is it ok to be in the same room with it uncovered for extended time period, etc |
Answer: | Not sure why you would have it uncovered for extended period. We are just now installing for first time. Previous underpayment had no odor and once covered no odor year later. I think we will be just as happy with this brand |
Question: | If installing laminate on this, do you also need to use 6 mil plastic over the concrete before this |
Answer: | Yes- there is a vapor barrier element to this, but not like 6 mil plastic. Still need the vapor barrier. |
Question: | I have joint problems does this provide good cushioing or would i be better with a rubber underlayment |
Answer: | Yes underlayment provides great cushioning also provides a vapor and moisture barrior |
Question: | would this be good to use under 14.3mm thick laminate that already has the padding attached? laminate is being laid over vinyl floor |
Answer: | Since your laminate already has attached pad there is no need to provide an extra layer of underlay cushioning . However if moisture coming from your concrete subfloor is an issue then a standard vapor barrier plastic should be used (plastic sheeting without any foam underlay) |
Question: | Can any one please tell me how wide is this material |
Answer: | About 44” for the foam portion. There is excess plastic and adhesive to connect strips. |
Question: | can this be used under vinyl plank luxurious flooring |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used under the solid hardwood flooring, installed on top on vinyl floor? In other word, can this be put in the middle of vinyl and hardwood |
Answer: | there is a high chance that the vinyl becomes slippery due to the finished aluminum |
Question: | Can you hear the floor system russle when walking on it |
Answer: | Not at all. I've used various types of underlayment and this is by far my favorite. No noise, great insulation, and comfortable to walk on. |
Question: | Any reason not to use this with lvp with a pad already on the bottom of the plank |
Answer: | LVP tends to be very thin, with a very tiny click lock mechanism. I'd be concerned that too much padding may allow the planks to separate. It might be worth trying, though. While LVP walks a little quieter than Pergo, both products tend to walk a lot noisier than hardwood. A quality pad like this makes all the difference with Pergo. It makes the floor sound more solid, and a lot quieter. It should help out with LVP, as well. |
Question: | I am on the second floor and need quiet foot traffic. Will this help with that |
Answer: | Yes, the IIC rating is what most condo complexes now require to minimize noise transfer. Used it on several condo projects. Great pad. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this behind garage door panels for sound barrier |
Answer: | I used the ultraseal underlayment beneath a 1/2" hickory and nailed down the floor. Nailing through the underlayment obviously would eliminate the moisture barrier properties but it works great for sound absorption and provides a slight cushion. We used this converting an upstairs bedroom to a home gym so we wanted the cushioning and sound absorption only. |
Question: | Can this be used under vinyl peel and stick tiles |
Answer: | I wouldn't. Its an underlayment/moisture barrier to be placed between concrete sub-floor and laminate wood flooring |
Question: | Could I use this behind the foam insulation on my garage doors for a sound barrier |
Answer: | I doubt it but I'm not sure this is what you need. This underlayment is essentially foam that rips pretty easily. It likely won't last very long. |
Question: | Since this has the adhesive tape on it does the opposite edge has additional foil material to stick to the adhesive tape to seal seams |
Answer: | Floormuffler Ultraseal is not recommended for porcelain tile installations. It is recommended for laminate, hardwood and engineered wood flooring installations. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to buy a thermostat to control it? Or can it be connected to a switch? Just on and off |
Answer: | You need a thermostat to install it properly - SAFELY. The mats are standard 110 / 120 volt hot & neutral. You could wire it to a switch and the mats will not care. The Tstat's most important role is turning the mats OFF, not on. Without a stat the mats are just going to keep making heat until you turn them off, maybe after the house burns down, maybe not. No switch, timer, photocell...whatever you employ to control the mats is going to take the place of a thermostat for a proper and safe installation. Anything else would be reckless. |
Question: | What underlayment is recommended for this heating film |
Answer: | I laid it right on the tile. Works great. |
Question: | Can these be cut and wired in a series to one thermostat |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Planning 1 mat 1.5x5 = 90 watts. Can I use this w/o thermostat? Just on a gfci protected circuit w/ off/on switch |
Answer: | Yes. I did this and it works just fine. I could not find an inexpensive thermostat that would operate properly on such a low load / resistance so I just hard wired with a cut off switch. No problems so far and installed about 6 months? |

Question: | do you have to buy a seprate moisture barrier with this product |
Answer: | Not that i have read or informed myself about |
Question: | Will this work for hardwood floor installations |
Answer: | Yes, this can be used for hardwood flooring installations. |
Question: | Is this just a pad or moisture barrier as well |
Answer: | Hi there! This is going to be a 2mm thick pad that will have your vapor barrier also. Its going to also provide you with excellent sound dampening, and will be mold and mildew resistant. This underlayment is also able to correct any minor subfloor imperfections your subfloor may have. If you have any other questions for me please don't hesitate to let me know! Have a great day! Question: | Is this also a vapor barrier? And do we need a special tape to tape the ends together so that vapor can not leak up between once floor is laid |
Answer: | I used a layer of plastic below this as a vapor barrier (I've laid about 7 floors, and have done this each time). You will need to tape the plastic together at the seams, but this foam has an adhesive strip. At least it did when I bought it. You can tape it with any tape really, as it only holds the plastic and/or foam in place until the flooring is laid. Good luck! |
