14 best stirrup irons
Stirrup irons are a crucial component of equestrian equipment used in horseback riding. They are part of the saddle and tack ensemble, serving as a platform for the rider's feet. Here's what you should know about stirrup irons:
Design and Construction: Stirrup irons are typically made of metal, with variations in materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, or composite materials. They have a flat base where the rider's foot rests and a footplate where the rider places their boot.
Purpose: Stirrup irons serve several essential functions in horseback riding:
- Foot Support: They provide a stable platform for the rider's feet, helping to distribute the rider's weight evenly.
- Safety: Stirrup irons are designed with release mechanisms that allow the rider's foot to come out of the stirrup in case of a fall, reducing the risk of being dragged by the horse.
- Balance and Stability: Properly adjusted stirrups assist the rider in maintaining balance and stability while riding.
Sizing: Stirrup irons come in various sizes to accommodate different riders and riding disciplines. The size is typically measured by the width of the stirrup iron and the height of the footplate. Riders often choose stirrup sizes based on their boot size and personal comfort preferences.
Styles: There are different styles of stirrup irons available, including:
- Traditional Fillis Irons: These are the most common type, featuring a simple, classic design with a curved footplate.
- Safety Stirrups: Some stirrups are designed with safety mechanisms to prevent the foot from getting trapped during a fall.
- Jointed or Offset Stirrups: These designs offer added comfort and flexibility to the rider's leg and ankle.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of stirrup irons is essential to ensure safety and longevity. This includes regular cleaning, checking for any signs of wear or damage, and ensuring that the stirrup leather is securely attached.
Stirrup Leathers: Stirrup irons are connected to the saddle via stirrup leathers or stirrup straps. These leather straps are adjustable to accommodate the rider's leg length and position.
Riding Discipline: The type of stirrup iron used can vary depending on the riding discipline. For example, some disciplines may require specialized stirrups designed for specific purposes, such as dressage or jumping.
Safety Considerations: Riders should always ensure that stirrup irons are properly adjusted and that their feet are correctly placed in the stirrups to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries.
Stirrup irons are an integral part of horseback riding gear, contributing to rider comfort, safety, and performance. Riders should choose stirrup irons that are appropriate for their riding style, size, and individual preferences to ensure a safe and enjoyable riding experience.

User questions & answers
Question: | What part of them flexes? I don’t see any joints |
Answer: | I feed to a mini, so the dose is much smaller. I think this should last quite a long time, and well worth the price. Cleared my boy right up. I keep him on it all the time now. |
Question: | Feels like a dumb question.... but are they sold as a pair |
Answer: | I've been using this for 3 weeks now and I can tell a difference in my barrel horse. He is an older guy at 20 and I haven't had him scoped for ulcers. He used to get very prancy and nervous especially sitting close to the alleyway. I've noticed in the past week when I took him, he was way different. He wasn't as nervous and not nearly as prancy. And he will sit directly behind the alleyway now calm as can be. I think he was getting nervous and causing issues with his gut. I'm using it for him and also for a colt to prevent ulcers. I used the powder at first and my young one seems to not care, but my barrel horse won't eat the grain with the powder, I've seen such a difference in him in just a couple of weeks that I'm going to continue to use it, just switch to the pellets. |
Question: | How wide is the area to attach the stirrup leathers |
Answer: | It would be best to ask your vet. |
Question: | I understand the width is 4.75"... what is the toe depth? Thanks |
Answer: | This is a hard shell bug, some say yes others no. I know folks who use it for ticks, bed bugs, and flees though. You look on YouTube for vid on how to spread for bugs and go at it, and you can pray that the Good Lord will bless His ways..why use man's chemicals? |
Product description
During the last decade a revolution of sorts has occurred in the design of English stirrups. Riders are no longer restricted to the rigid stainless steel “fillis” style of irons. Many of today’s English riders, especially those who ride over jumps, prefer flexible irons. Flex stirrups provide a certain sense of freedom and mobility in the saddle. They’re crafted so that the branch of the stirrup iron bends in response to pressure or movement from the rider’s foot. Anecdotally, flexible stirrups seem to alleviate some of the stress exerted on a rider’s knees and ankles, a plus for equestrians with chronically stiff or painful joints. Though traditionally shaped, flex stirrups feature a rubberized covering over the top of the bendable areas, giving them a sort of New Age appearance.Flexible stirrup irons are legal for hunter and jumper competition, however, check your specific breed or discipline rules to make sure they’re considered proper equipment. The flexible nature of these stirrups may also be a safety feature: In case of a fall, they’ll twist with the rider’s foot, allowing the boot to come free of the stirrup

- Dress up your saddle with these Beautiful Stirrups
- The outside of the stirrup is longer than the inside to relieve pressure from your knees with your feet parallel to the ground.

Question: | Sold as a set |
Answer: | For your reference, our sizing are: Small Pony: 150-300 lbs; Pony: 300-600 lbs; Cob: 600-800 lbs; Full: 800-1,100 lbs; X Full:1,100+ lbs Please check if your mini fits our small pony size in 150-300 lbs |
Question: | How long do they take to arrive |
Answer: | i would think small horse |
Question: | How do you determine the size needed |
Answer: | I leave mine on my mare 24/7 in the summer because she won't tolerate being locked in a stall and it doesn't bother her. |
Question: | Are the foot pads removable |
Answer: | I use this product with my Andalusian, who has the same cob head size. I use the "horse" size. If anything, the sized run a bit smaller than expected. I had to return 1 in the past because I ordered it too small and had no troubles. I personally think this is a great product and have used it for years on several different horses. Because of heavy use, I usually get 2 per year per horse. It is a lot cheaper than a vet bill! |

Question: | How do you attach these? Do you use them over existing pads |
