14 best folding anchors
Folding anchors, also known as collapsible anchors or grapnel anchors, are a type of anchor commonly used in boating and watercraft activities. These anchors are designed for their portability and ease of storage, making them a popular choice for small boats, kayaks, canoes, and other watercraft. Here are some key features and information about folding anchors:
Design: Folding anchors typically consist of multiple flukes or tines that fold inward, allowing for compact storage when not in use. These flukes can be unfolded when needed to secure the boat to the bottom of the waterbody.
Materials: They are often constructed from materials such as galvanized steel, stainless steel, or aluminum to resist corrosion and provide durability in a marine environment.
Weight: Folding anchors come in various sizes and weights, with options suitable for different boat sizes and types. The weight of the anchor is essential for its effectiveness in holding the boat in place.
Versatility: They are versatile and can be used in a variety of water conditions, including lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. However, they are generally best suited for calm or light current conditions.
Deployment: To use a folding anchor, boaters simply need to lower it over the side of the boat and allow it to sink to the bottom. The flukes should then dig into the sediment or underwater structure, providing a secure anchor point.
Storage: Folding anchors are popular among boaters who have limited storage space, as they can be collapsed into a small, flat shape that can be easily stowed away when not in use.
Retrieval: Retrieving a folding anchor is typically straightforward. Boaters can pull up on the anchor line to release it from the bottom. The flukes will fold inwards, making it easier to bring aboard.
Use Cases: Folding anchors are commonly used for fishing, recreational boating, and activities like kayaking and canoeing. They are ideal for situations where temporary anchoring is needed, such as stopping to fish in a quiet cove or enjoying a picnic on the water.
Anchor Line: It's essential to use an appropriate anchor line (rope or chain) of sufficient length and strength to provide a secure hold. The choice of anchor line material can also affect the anchor's performance.
Safety Precautions: Boaters should always be cautious when anchoring and ensure that the anchor is properly set to prevent the boat from drifting. Checking the weather conditions and depth of the water is also essential for safe anchoring.
Folding anchors are a practical choice for boaters looking for a compact and portable anchoring solution. However, it's crucial to select the right size and type of anchor for your specific watercraft and boating conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness.

More Than an Anchor
Identifying the proper anchor size for a boat is not a perfect science. Boat type, boating conditions, amount of rode and rope used, among other factors, all contribute to the ideal anchor for a given situation. An anchor is but one part of an anchoring system.
The Anchor Line
The anchor line, also known as the anchor rode, is a crucial part of the system. Its stretchy, elastic characteristics prevent any destructive jerking from damaging the anchor system when waves push or pull on your boat. Both 3-strand twisted and braided nylon ropes do a great job.
The Lead Chain
The lead chain is also an important part of the anchoring system because it adds weight to the shank of the anchor, providing a better dig or bite into the bottom. These lead chains usually come in galvanized steel or stainless steel, but can also come coated to prevent damaging your vessel.
Shackles & Swivels
Other anchoring accessories can also support the system. Shackles allow the anchor system to take on more loads from a variety of directions. They are composed of sturdy materials like galvanized steel. Swivels alleviate the potential damage of twisting and turning from the boat's movement.
Choosing an Anchor: Water Conditions
Water conditions are a big factor in how you anchor your boat. Coastal and open waters leave your vessel subject to wind, waves, and currents - requiring a more substantial anchor and rode. Anchoring for rivers and smaller lakes tends to be less critical since the boat is rarely subject to strong winds or currents.
Choosing an Anchor: Boat Length
Boat Length is another factor to consider when selecting an anchor. It is a reference point for selecting the ideal size anchor for your vessel. However, keep in mind that the recommended sizes are typically meant for ideal conditions. Consider the boat's weight and external factors like the wind when selecting an anchor's size or weight.
Choosing an Anchor: Bottom Type
When selecting an anchor, it's important to consider the bottom types that you will encounter. Whether it's grass, weeds, mud, rocks or sand, make sure your anchor will perform adequately. If you expect to run into multiple bottom types, versatile plow or scoop-style anchors are an excellent all-around choice.
Choosing an Anchor: Anchor Type
Identifying the proper anchor size for a boat is not a perfect science. Many factors contribute to the ideal anchor for a given situation. An anchor is but one part of an anchoring system. We show anchor boat sizes that are appropriate for most boats under normal, safe boating conditions, when used in conjunction with the other anchoring elements as are generally recommended for proper anchoring.

User questions & answers
Question: | I just received mine. the tabs on the shaft impede easy opening of the anchor and when it's open I can't turn the ring around enough to get it to lock |
Answer: | I have not used in the ocean but I live on the Carolina Coast and think the five pound weight is too light to overcome the strength of the near shore waves. |
Question: | Is the float PVC (as described) or styrofoam as shown in pictures |
Answer: | I don’t know what you mean by river style but we use about 10 of these in a river to anchor buoys to keep boats out of our swimming area. We also use then to anchor a swimming raft. They are light enough to lift and move when needed but don’t get washed down river by a medium strength river current. |
Question: | Would this work for a jet ski at the sandbar ? Also, how rust resistant? We go out every weekend in the summer and saltwater can be harsh |
Answer: | For an anchor wizard yes. Too big for a kayak though. |
Question: | Is this anchor able to go on a 2000 pound boat |
Answer: | Made in China. |

Answer: | 1/4", but I replaced it with paracord. |
Question: | Is the buoy foam or pvc plastic |
Answer: | It's foam, I returned mine because they only sent me 1 anchor and it's suppose to be a 2 pack meaning 2 anchors. I ended up getting one from Extreme Max 3006.6548 BoatTector. This was a better made anchor with a PVC bouy ! I bought 2 and it was only 3 dollars more than the Olivia & Aiden one. |
