User questions & answers
Question: | What is the recommended weight for this item |
Answer: | I don’t know the recommended weight, but I use it for my 4 year old daughter and she weighs 36 pounds. The legs feel sturdy enough to hold her. I hope my comment helps. |
Question: | Is there a weight limit when you use it on top of toilet seats |
Answer: | It doesn’t seem to list an official weight limit, but it’s a sturdy plastic, so within reason of not being able to use a regular seat, I would think it should be ok. |
Question: | Will this potty support a child over 16kg |
Answer: | Yes my daughter is close to that and it supports her just fine |
Question: | Can i use this one with plastic bags |
Answer: | You can use this with plastic grocery sacks. But in my opinion, I don't think you should. For all the times I've had holes in grocery sacks, buying the bags is well worth the money when you consider what you're holding. And of course that it prevents me from having to clean up such a mess in my car... |

Question: | I am converting a shed into living space. Could I use this vs. installing a septic system |
Answer: | A composting toilets is $1000. This is $70. I lived in my Airstream and this was my toilet.( Only #1 went in the holding tank for #2 put a grocery sack over the bowl ) I used it probably 5 times a day. After three months the rubber gasket got worn out on the flusher. Rigged it for a month .the remaining 5 months I just used my shower head sprayer which was a foot away. I am now ordering #2. I can buy this 14 times for the cost of a composting toilet..that plus my #2 go in the trash every day usually within 10 minutes of the bootycakes arrival..they don't compost inside my tiny space |
Question: | Can this be emptied into your residential toilet? I had one in a popup camper that you could empty the cassette in a regular toilet |
Answer: | You can as long as it is not overloaded with toilet paper & other solids. |
Question: | How much water per flush is recommended? How many days of one person using it for mostly "solids" would it work for |
Answer: | Well this unit holds about 5 gallons of water, each flush is less then quater of gallon depending how many times you pump to dispose the waste. 1 to 3 flushes should do it. It has a decent pressure, not like a real toilet but enough to clean the bowl. I took it with me camping and I had three females ranging from 7 and 34 years, of age. Believe it or not I only had to dispose the waste every two to three days depending on use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where do you dispose of the bag |
Answer: | Two part answer: I put toilet paper in a separate little baggy. That makes it easier to drain the potty bag. I take the potty bag to a toilet in a rest stop or gas station and dump the contents, wad the bag and depositnin a trash bin. A couple of practice runs at home with water will help. |
Question: | Can it stay together if filled with water that is in a plastic bag |
Answer: | There is no reason that it wouldn’t. The body of the toilet is one piece made of interlocking heavy plastic which folds in a particular manner for stowing. |
Question: | If the bag leaks, would the contents be contained within the outer plastic bucket part? Or would they leak through onto the floor? Thanks |
Answer: | The contents would not be contained. The outer bucket and bottom board are made to fit together to hold the toilet in place but do not provide a seal for inner contents. |
Question: | How tall when fully |
Answer: | About a foot tall |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a way to take apart the bottom half in order to clean it? Waste builds up on any toilet and needs to be scrubbed, not just rinsed |
Answer: | I carry the bottom waste tank to the campground toilet along with two gallon jugs of treated water. I dump the waste first. Then I pour in 1/3 to 1/2 a gallon of treated water. Swish around and drain into the camp toilet. Check to see how clean it is or if there's an area that needs extra effort. Usually not. And then use the gallon up in 1 to 2 more rinses and swishes and draining. I use the very same products that they recommend to keep a toilet like this to not smell and develop problems with the waste and helps to break up and sanitize the waste too. I find this has worked well with no ill effects to me or my portable loo itself. Now I hate this loo since it's battery power flusher arrived busted and I did not realize it was broken until the wires themselves also broke off since it just dangled under the screw cap. That is another issue and trying to find a replacement import to fix it or switch it to a manual loo. I recommend looking for a different model or buying the manual flush version not this one. The company does not support it in the USA only in Europe under a different name. |
Question: | I love the toilet but I have noticed that pressure builds up in the tank and if a user opens the gate valve with the seat/lid up it is enough to cause them to get a faceful of poop spray. I did not have this problem with an earlier model Thetford and am puzzled as to what the cause might be. Permanent mount in sailboat |
Answer: | Yes I noticed this also the reason is this toilet has bigger tanks then my older one and the larger the tank the more air pressure can build inside of it the easy fix for this is before you use the toilet wad a few squares of toilet paper and set it directly over the hole and then close the lid and open the slide on the toilet slowly and that will let the pressure out and You won’t get splash in the face then you’re good to go and you might want to do that every time if it’s going to be hot where you’re at or if you’ve changed altitude. |
Question: | How or where do you empty this toilet? Can it be emptied in a cabin toilet? Is it nasty to empty |
Answer: | Susan - the toilet separates with a latch into top and bottom halves. The bottom half iss the waste tank. When you separate the halves you will see a tube with a screw cap that swivels out to the side. This will serve as the spout to enable you to pour the waste into any flush toilet. By "cabin toilet", I assume you mean a normal toilet with plumbing. If so, yes. If you mean a compost toilet, then you can empty the waste into it, but keep in mind that it will be up to 5 gallons, which could overload a small compost toilet. It's not particularly nasty to empty, especially if you press the small relief valve button before opening the cap on the waste spout. This will prevent splashback. When you pour the waste out, just do it slowly and gently to prevent "glugging" and splash. After the waste is emptied, just run some water back onto the pour spout, replace the cap, and slosh around a bit to rinse clean. Then empty the rinse water into the toilet as well. Make sure to replace the deodorant liquid before storing to eliminate odor. The Thetford site has some pretty good into on the emptying process at http://www.thetford.com/HOME/PRODUCTS/PortableToilets/ThetfordPortableToiletVideos/tabid/871/Default.aspx. Also, check out the YouTube demo at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwNFB6NVGf4. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can this also be manually flushed in case your batteries are dead |
Answer: | This is a REALLY sore subject with this model toilet. The battery-powered flushing mechanism is short-lived, where it will suddenly and inexplicably break. Added to this is that Thetford doesn't offer a reasonable replacement for the flush mechanism in the U.S., they want to charge almost as much as the entire toilet unit! So if your flush mechanism breaks (and it will), then A) you can't flush the toiler from the toilet's reservoir water anymore, and B) you can't buy a replacement pump for less than the cost of a whole toilet. In the 1-star review section of this product I found that this same toilet is sold under a different name in Europe, and that replacement parts are actually available for it, so I was able to completely get rid of the battery pump and replace it with a manual one:Piston pump: 92401111 (Signal white) 9240166 (Light ivory) 92401130 (Ruby red)Electric pump: 92402135 (Light grey granite) 9240207 (Traffic grey)Hope this helps someone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these portable toilets be connected to the sewer pipe (black water hose) at campgrounds |
Answer: | No. The bottom portion that stores the waste water has to be deprecated and dumped. |
Question: | How much water is released when pump os operated |
Answer: | If I were to guess I'd say 1-2 cups, roughly 240-475 ml |
Question: | Is the center hole 8 x 9 like most others |
Answer: | You're correct. It's 9 in. front to back and 8 1/4 in. wide. You made me curious, so I measured my bathroom toilet. It's considered a long bowl and measures 10 in. front to back and the same 8 1/4 in. wide. Thank you for helping me learn something new. If I'm ever confronted by a mugger who says "tell me how big your toilet is or I'll blow your head off" I now know the answer. You may have saved my life! |
Question: | What happens after 50 flushes? Is there a battery and is it replaceable? Not enthusiastic about purchasing a new one every 50 flushes |
Answer: | There are two halves, top half has a cap to fill clean water and a plunger to push the clean water into the tank. The bottom half is for the waste which needs to be empty. There is an indicator in the front to let you know when it's due. I empty it about 3/4 full. I made the mistake once when the level was all red, DON'T DO THAT! 3/4 is best. To break down the waste, I use Walex Bio-Pak (for breaking down waste) and Porta-Pak (deodorizer), one each. I put them after setting it up and after each cleaning. It almost completely turns it into liquid. Fresh scent porta-pak seems to smell better (blue package) than lavender (purple package), however bio-back (green package) IS DEFINITELY NEEDED to break down waste. After the bottom tank gets full, (more like 40 flushes than fifty) it needs to be emptied, rinsed out with clean water and set back up. After its set up put in one bio-pak and one porta-pak. You can order through Amazon for those. The water tank, upper portion holds about 2.5 gallons (about 9.5 liters), I don't pull the plunger all the way up, only about half way or as needed. This way it conserves on water. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you buy replacement parts for thetford products |
Answer: | Not to my knowledge. My wife and I are truck drivers and we use this model on a daily basis and they wear every couple years and have never looked for replacement parts. What we found that wore out is the seal. I broke the handle off once by stepping on it while it was pulled out and didn’t see any way to replace it. The way I looked at it we more than got our monies worth out of it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Traveling overseas and will be in a very remote location for about a week. Will this fit in my suitcase? It appears to be lightweight enough to pack |
Answer: | It is very light. Whether it fits or not would depend on the size of your suitcase. It has a hard frame so may make packing around it difficult. Finding a tree may be easier. |
Question: | Do you have to change bag with each use |
Answer: | It doesn't come with bags, you use your own. You can change bags as often as you want. I use a small bathroom trash can with small trash bags in it. It helps if you use a little bit of cat litter at the bottom of the bag to absorb urine. |
Question: | What is the weight tolerance |
Answer: | 250 pounds |
Question: | Would a five gallon bucket fit under this |
Answer: | The picture shows most 2 gallon buckets on the market will fit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the best deodorizer etc. to use in this toilet that is safe for septic tanks |
Answer: | That question should probably be answered by those who specialize in septic fields. I would not rely on a layman’s opinion if the incorrect answer could cause thousands to repair your septic system. Or contact the deodorizer manufacturer for accurate information. |
Question: | Is this just for urine? I don’t see any info on emptying BM |
Answer: | It is for #2 also...just a little stingier emptying it. |
Question: | Is there a warranty? A piece fell out of the tank when we emptied it today |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | How many oz of toilet chemical is recommended for this toilet? The owner's manual does not address this |
Answer: | The stuff comes in 8 oz bottles. Use half for the waste tank with a little bit of water. FYI, I camped with this toilet in January for 7 days and only just got the red flag warning that the tank was getting fullish. That was me by myself, I hasten to add. YMMV. Pro tip: practice taking it apart and also make sure that the cap is on the waste tank pour spout. When I went to dump mine I discovered what I thought was an extra cap belonged there! Even so, absolutely no smell from this toilet and I was camping in a 6 x 12 enclosed cargo trailer. |

Question: | is it "comfortable enough" to sit on for an hour |
Answer: | I have been using my Vivohome 5.3 on 3 camping trips. The unit is a I expected. No oders when the lid is closed. I do both #1 & #2 no smells unless the flush handle is open.
