You can use it alone or you can slip your sleeping bag into it because it is resistant to water. It folds up into the small bag which fits in your hand. I guess you could use it like a poncho or tent by unsealing the seam.

Answer:	No. Heat will still escape from the head of the bag. Also, it is not a perfect insulator. A FLIR will still pick it up against a "cold by contrast " background.

Answer:	Yes, I have used the TWFRIC emergency Sleeping bag for that purpose, just in keep mind the emergency bag will keep in the moisture from your body as well as the heat, anything you have in the bag with you will be wet in the morning.
