14 best tent waterproofing product
Tent waterproofing products are essential for outdoor enthusiasts and campers who want to ensure their tents remain dry and comfortable during rainy or wet conditions. These products are designed to provide an extra layer of protection to your tent fabric, helping to keep moisture out and maintain a dry interior. Here are some key aspects of tent waterproofing products:
Waterproofing Sprays: Waterproofing sprays are one of the most common and accessible products for waterproofing tents. They typically come in aerosol cans and can be applied directly to the tent fabric. These sprays create a waterproof barrier on the fabric's surface, preventing water from seeping through.
Seam Sealers: Seam sealers are specifically designed to seal the seams of your tent, which are often the weakest points for water infiltration. They come in liquid or gel form and are applied to the seams to prevent leaks.
Tent Sealant: Tent sealants are similar to seam sealers but can be used to reinforce the entire tent fabric. They are particularly useful for older tents or those with worn-out waterproof coatings.
Durable Water Repellent (DWR) Treatment: Some tents come with a DWR treatment that can wear off over time. You can reapply DWR treatments to restore the water-repellent properties of the fabric. These treatments are often available in spray or wash-in forms.
Silicone-based Waterproofing: Silicone-based waterproofing products are known for their effectiveness in creating a durable waterproof barrier. They are often used for reproofing tent rainflys and tarps.
Tent Footprints and Groundsheets: While not a direct waterproofing product, using a tent footprint or groundsheet can help protect the tent floor from moisture seeping through from the ground.
Ultraviolet (UV) Protection: Some tent waterproofing products also offer UV protection, which can extend the life of your tent fabric by shielding it from the sun's harmful rays.
Maintenance and Cleaning: Regular maintenance and cleaning of your tent can also contribute to its waterproofing. Keep zippers clean and lubricated, remove dirt and debris from the fabric, and store your tent properly when not in use.
Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that the waterproofing product you choose is compatible with the material of your tent. Different tents may have different fabric compositions, and using the wrong product can potentially damage the fabric.
Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when applying any waterproofing product. Proper application ensures that the product works effectively.
Remember that even with the best waterproofing products, no tent is entirely waterproof in extreme conditions. It's essential to set up your tent correctly, choose a suitable campsite, and use rainflys and tarps when necessary to maximize protection during adverse weather conditions. Regular maintenance and reproofing will help extend the life of your tent and keep you dry during your outdoor adventures.

Question: | What if you used this on canvas shoes? Is there a residue? Will it collect dust and pet hair like NeverWet does |
Answer: | I have used it on rain coat, two pair UGG boots, isotoner gloves and a pair of UGG suede slippers that I always run outside in. Of course first 24 hours, AFTER bringing in house from spraying you will notice smell and may even feel a slightly different texture to your material items. After about 48 hours it's as if you never sprayed anything on them at all. Regarding dogs, I have a 215lb English Cream, Golden Retriever. Smartest dog I have ever known but I have to vac 2x a day just to keep up. Hair is not attracted to sprayed items at all. Enjoy your day. Bj |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this product on upholstery in a new car? How does it compare with the Honda's "deal" of around $400-$450 for Fabri-Gard treatment by them |
Answer: | Always Spot Test the fabric. I have used 303 Fabric Guard on canvas, boat carpet, indoor carpet, fabric and directly applied it to foam with no problems. Excellent water repellent. Recommended for use by & on Sunbrella Material. A pleasant smelling light oily clear fluid that dries with no odor and no oily feel. Can be sprayed, brushed, rolled and/or saturated. I suggest buying the gallon size. Not familiar with Honda's Fabric-Gard but For $400-$450 you could have a car seat or two recovered or replaced. Good Luck! |
Question: | How does this work on personal items? Like a wool coat? I've heard rumors that it works, but I would love some first-hand accounts |
Answer: | I have not tried it on anything except my soft top convertable, I would think it would work just find, it does not leave any residue once it dries, it will smell for a day or so, but most repellents do. |
Question: | If a fabric convertible top treated with 303 Fabric Guard is washed with 303 Cleaner or standard car shampoo, is the effective protection reduced |
Answer: | 303 Fabric Guard works best on untreated, not washed with fabric softener (Downey), tightly woven cotton fabric. It will soak into the cotton and resist some detergent washing. Your convertible top and Sunbrella fabric are already treated and this stuff will just sit on top and will wash away pretty easily. 303 works great on my Filson dry finish canvas jacket but washes off my Sunbrella outdoor seat cushions. Any water repellant finish is ruined by fabric softener which persists in the fabric even after repeated rinsing so just hose off your outdoor seat cushions. |
Question: | How much coverage per ounce |
Answer: | According to the label, it covers 75-100 sq. ft. per 16-oz bottle, NOT 100 sq. ft. per ounce. Also, that is for LIGHTER fabrics; for heavier fabrics the label states 45-75 sq. ft. per 16-oz. bottle. |

Answer: | I did a large 6 person tent and have about 1/3 of the bottle left. |
Question: | will it work on canvas tent? thank you in advance |
Answer: | Thegearhunt.com did a review on this and rated it highly and it is for all natural and synthetic fabrics. I like it better than the nikwax. Have a lint free absorbent cloth handy to wipe and spread the excess. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it have any fire retardant properties ? can it be used first then a fire retardant layer on top? To be used on Burlap |
Answer: | Highly doubtful. I would not use this as it would probably repel the fire retardant. |
Question: | Can this be use on a Tent |
Answer: | I would think it could as long as the fabric on the tent isn't affected by it. I used it on Sunbrella on my boat and it worked very well. The Sunbrella had aged and lost its water-proofing to the point that it "rained" inside the bimini whenever we got a heavy rain. I used two coats on the bimini and it is now watertight. I would think it would have the same effect on the canvas of a tent. |
Question: | What kind of coverage will a gallon supply on a comercial grade carpet? Rough estimate will do. Thanks |
Answer: | i did a boat cover with 1 gallon that was 12' x 30'. i probably went a little too heavy, but it really works great!! the rain just races off it. |
Question: | Is this product UV protective too |
Answer: | This does not have UV protectant in it. I purchased a separate product called Force Field UV protection. I am going to put that one on first and then let it cure for 24 hours . Then I will spray this product on top of the UV protectant. |

Sno-Seal Original Beeswax Waterproofing protects leather from rain, sun, snow, and salt. Sno-Seal is also great for waxed cotton and tent seams. The beeswax formula dries to a solid wax that "stays put" in the surface of the leather so it lasts longer. Our competitors' greases, oil, and animal products are able to migrate through the leather till they clog all the pores. These waterproofing products fill the natural spaces that are supposed to absorb perspiration and insulate. In addition, animal fats weaken and rot leather. The tannery worked hard to remove the fats and preserve the leather, so it's hard to imagine why you'd put it back on. Sno-Seal will help you feel more comfortable in Gore-Tex fabric lined boots because it allows the Gore-Tex absorbed perspiration to escape out of the leather. Not only will Sno-Seal keep you warm and dry, it will also help you from getting tired. A typical leather boot can soak up to a pound of water. That means you lift an additional 2,212 lbs. to walk one mile. Sno-Seal keeps the whole boot dry, warm and light.
- Leather
- Made in the USA
- Made from Bee's Wax, not Grease, Oil or some other Animal Product.
- Dries to a Solid Wax that Stays Put on the Surface so it Lasts Longer.
- Lubricates and Conditions Leather Without Softening
- Maintains Flexibility in Freezing Temperatures
- Does Not Interfere with the Natural Breathability of Leather

Question: | How do I clean up my sprayer after using |
Answer: | I don't know I had to throw mine away as it ruined it couldn't get it unpluged. I should of cleaned it right away but I still had product left in the sprayer. |
Question: | can we mixture the content of the can with any other chemical to extend pain coverage of the silicone water guard liquid |
Answer: | I wouldn’t dilute it. That could easily compromise its effectiveness. A better idea would be to spray multiple thin coats to make it go farther. Small, refillable, hand sprayers are the way to go. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on my olefin outdoor cushions. They are supposed to be water resistant but really aren’t |
Answer: | I would not think that would be a good idea the mask is so pose to be breathable that I feel would prevent it . Also I dont think it would be wise to breath in the fumes after the fact . Just my opinion. |
Question: | can i use this on cotton face masks? will fumes after drying be harmful |
Answer: | Hello - This product is not designed for indoor use. We would not recommend using it on carpet for your application. For carpet we would recommend using the Scotchgard Rug & Carpet Protector. |
Question: | will this work on indoor carpet for pet pee and other pet accidents |
Answer: | It might! My wife uses this all the time on her job sites. She says certain white rubbers will yellow after some prolonged sunlight exposure. Best to test it and leave in the sun to make sure it won't yellow. |
Question: | Would this stain white tennis shoes |
Answer: | Yes. The only type of leather this would not work on is raw (or untreated) leather and suede. Our only advice is to apply a light coating, preferably with a microfiber cloth. This allows for less product to be used and prevents overspray. Then wipe off any excess completely. If the leather is heavily soiled, a second treatment may be required. Hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a big agnes q core sleeping pad |
Answer: | No, its permanent. |
Question: | seam seal needs to be removed from time to time and replaced. Can this product be removed later |
Answer: | The problem is, although Seam Grip Sealer does waterproof seams, it NEVER dries! It remains sticky FOREVER! It's a failed product that apparently gets positive feedback from people who are delusional or in some way connected with marketing it. Harsh words, but I've tried it, and & I'm still hurtin' from having to go back over all my hard seam sealing work with a product that DOES dry so I didn't have a sticky mess in my packs, stuff sacks & tents. I'm not connected with ANY product & my advice is DON'T USE IT. E6000 is THE product for waterproofing seams - it not only waterproofs the seams, but also creates a tough layer that protects them, yet stays flexible; it costs half as much as Seam Grip Sealer & you get twice as much. And, It COMPLETELY dries in only a few minutes and you'll be able to apply any water proofing product over it with no problems. Seam Grip Sealer recommends sprinkling baby powder on the seams after application to help it dry - BABY POWDER EVERYWHERE? SERIOUSLY?! You WON'T be able to spray waterproofing on fabric covered with baby powder unless you want a sticky, useless mess! Another plus for E6000 is that its readily available in the hardware or automotive sections of all dept. stores. The only negatives are that it has a funky chemical smell that takes several weeks to go away completely & you have to work quickly smoothing it on the seams cause it dries FAST. |
Question: | will this work on the seams of canvas popup camper. Then be able to spray with water repellant after the sealant dries |
Answer: | I've done a lot of waterproofing (jackets, backpacks, tents, shoes) & I've tried Seam Grip Sealer & I HATE IT WITH A PASSION! It just never dries; after months & months it's still sticky (the company admits it's difficult to cure & recommends sprinkling baby powder on it to help it dry - BABY POWDER?! Who wants baby powder all over everything?!). And when it comes in contact with itself on a seam it sticks & when you try to pull it apart it rips away the sealer. Seam sealing is time consuming & I've wasted mucho time tearing off the sticky Seam Sealer mess & using much better products: For heavy materials I like E6000; it costs 1/2 as much for twice as much sealer, drys fast, stays flexible but is tuff & protects the seams. Because it does dry fast, be ready to work quick to spread it out & the funky chemical smell will go away in a couple of weeks. For lighter materials such as coats, I like Coghlan's Seam Sealer; it's easy to use, seals the seam well, drys quick & a 2 oz tube goes a long way, and again, is much cheaper than Seam Grip. If you want to glue two pieces of nylon together, I'd recommend Beacon Fabri-Tac - it bonds quickly & permanently, dries clear & is washable. It's not cheap, but makes a super bond & a 4 oz bottle will do a lot of projects. |
Question: | Does it stick nylon to nylon fabric for my waterproof jacket |
Answer: | It takes about 24 hours to dry completely , then add a second coat and let that dry completely . |
