12 best horse treats
Horse treats are special snacks or rewards given to horses as a form of positive reinforcement, for training purposes, or simply to bond with and pamper the animal. Here's what you should know about horse treats:
Purpose of Horse Treats: Horse treats serve various purposes, including rewarding good behavior during training, building trust and a strong bond with the horse, and providing occasional indulgence. They are not meant to replace a horse's regular diet, which primarily consists of hay, grains, and pasture.
Types of Horse Treats: There are several types of horse treats available, including:
- Carrot and Apple Treats: These are popular choices, as many horses enjoy the natural sweetness of carrots and apples.
- Molasses-Based Treats: These treats are often sweetened with molasses and can be shaped into various forms, like cookies or bars.
- Peppermint or Mint Treats: Horses often like the refreshing taste of peppermint-flavored treats.
- Grain-Based Treats: These may contain grains like oats, wheat, or barley and are formulated to be safe and tasty for horses.
- Commercial Horse Treats: Many pet supply stores sell specially designed horse treats that are nutritionally balanced and safe for equine consumption.
Homemade Treats: Some horse owners prefer to make their own treats using simple ingredients like oats, bran, carrots, apples, or molasses. Homemade treats allow for customization and can be a cost-effective option.
Moderation: It's important to give horse treats in moderation. Overfeeding treats can lead to weight gain and digestive issues. Treats should be considered a supplement to the horse's regular diet, not a primary source of nutrition.
Training and Bonding: Treats can be used as a positive reinforcement tool during training sessions. Horses quickly learn to associate good behavior with a reward, making training more effective. Additionally, offering treats can help build trust and strengthen the bond between the horse and the handler.
Safety: When giving treats to horses, it's crucial to ensure they are safe for equine consumption. Avoid feeding them items that are toxic to horses, such as chocolate, onions, or any food with small bones. Always check the ingredients of commercial treats to ensure they are suitable for horses.
Storage: Store horse treats in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage. Proper storage helps ensure that the treats remain appetizing and safe for your horse.
Variety: Some horses have specific preferences, so it's a good idea to try different types of treats to see what your horse enjoys the most. This can make treat time more enjoyable for both you and your horse.
Remember that while horse treats can be a valuable tool for training and bonding, they should be used responsibly and in conjunction with a balanced equine diet to maintain your horse's health and well-being.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this come in the plastic bucket that is pictured |
Answer: | It had a safety seal on the one I received fresh |
Question: | Are these individually wrapped |
Answer: | No, these cookies are NOT soft and chewy. They are hard and crunchy. The horses LOVE them, but I don't think they are what you are looking for. Have you tried molasses to help your horse take Previcox? That worked very well with my guy who didn't want to take his medicine. Mrs. Pasture's cookies are really a great treat for the horses, but they would not be what you are looking for. |
Question: | Does anyone know the approximate number of treats in the 6 pound bag |
Answer: | Yes. It seals after opening and the cookies stay fresh. |
Question: | can dried out muffins be rehydrated |
Answer: | A 40 lb. bag lasts 1,000 lb. horse 80 days. If you fed just over 2 scoops, the bag would last around 165-170 days give or take. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where are these made |
Answer: | Here are instructions from the manufacturer's website: Top dress feed grain or hay with 4 ounce per 500 lb body weight per day. 4 ounce scoop included. A 1,000 lb horse will receive two full scoops. Feed consistently, no matter what the activity level of the horse is. |
Question: | These came in a hard plastic container. There was no safety or fresh seal to remove. Do they usually have one or both |
Answer: | Yes, you will need to adjust how much you feed. The average dose is 8 oz. per 1,000 lb horse. Feel free to email our equine nutritionist with any further questions at [email protected] |
Question: | Are these cookies soft & chewy? Need to trick my elderly horse into taking her Previcox again |
Answer: | A 10lb bag last 1 1,000lb horse 20 days. So 4 horses would be 5 days each. Though, please remember this product is the equivalent of feeding four supplements. A hoof and hair supplement, joint supplement, digestive supplement and a vitamin and mineral supplement. Thank you! |
Question: | Do these have a safety/fresh seal |
Answer: | Yes. I use it for my lactating does because our Michigan soil is severely deficient. It's surprisingly hard to OD goats with selenium on Michigan soil. I give mine two or three scoops a day during lactation |
