12 best fish foods
Fish food is a specialized type of pet food designed specifically for aquatic animals kept in aquariums. The nutritional needs of fish vary depending on their species, size, age, and other factors. Here are some key points about fish food:
Types of Fish Food:
- Flakes: These are one of the most common types of fish food. They usually float on the water surface, making them suitable for both surface-feeding and mid-water fish.
- Pellets/Granules: Available in various sizes, these sink to different depths in the water, catering to fish that prefer feeding at various levels.
- Freeze-Dried: This type of food undergoes a freeze-drying process to preserve nutrients. It often includes a variety of organisms like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
- Live and Frozen Foods: Some fish, especially carnivorous species, benefit from live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and small fish.
Nutritional Content:
- A well-balanced fish diet typically includes proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.
- Different fish species have varied dietary requirements. For instance, herbivorous fish might need more plant-based food, while carnivorous species require a diet rich in animal proteins.
Specialized Diets:
- There are specialized diets for specific purposes, such as enhancing color, promoting growth, or catering to the needs of certain species.
- Some fish keepers also supplement their fish's diet with vegetables or homemade gel foods.
Feeding Frequency:
- Fish should generally be fed in small amounts multiple times a day.
- Overfeeding can lead to water quality issues, so it's crucial to follow recommended feeding guidelines.
Seasonal Considerations:
- Fish may have different dietary needs depending on the season or their breeding status. Some fish require specialized food during breeding seasons.
Water Type:
- The type of water (freshwater or saltwater) influences the choice of fish food. Some fish require specific mineral content or salinity in their diets.
Storage and Shelf Life:
- Proper storage is essential to maintain the nutritional value of fish food. It's often recommended to keep it in a cool, dry place and to use it within a certain period after opening.
When selecting fish food, it's essential to consider the specific requirements of the fish in your aquarium and choose a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Additionally, observing your fish's behavior and adjusting their diet accordingly can contribute to their overall health and well-being.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can betta fish eat this |
Answer: | Yes, betta fish are a tropical fish and can eat any type of flake or granule food intended for tropical fish, including this one. |
Question: | I want to buy 2 containers of 7.06 oz for a small tank for my sister from another country. Can you let me know the expiration date before I buy them |
Answer: | The recent 7.06 oz container I recently purchased from Amazon had an expiration date of 08/20. |
Question: | Can goldfish eat these |
Answer: | Yes, they can eat them, although they would not meet their nutritional needs, properly. We would recommend TetraFin, our diet for goldfish. |
Question: | Is any one else having issues with this new clean and clear water fish food? The food that isn't eaten blows up into spoiled messes in the water |
Answer: | Just like everyone else said, regardless of the food you use you should not overfeed. This is a common issue because many don't know how to feed their fish properly. I often give them a VERY small amount and watch how the consume the food. I then add a bit more once or twice. They do just fine being a bit hungry. Also, I don't feed them more than once per day and I feed in quantities so that very little of the food hits the bottom of the tank. They need to be eager to eat to avoid water pollution. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the expiration date |
Answer: | Mine is good till 2020, the expiration date is on the back in the lower left hand corner. |
Question: | how many times a day should I feed my fish? How many fish should I put in a 29 gallon |
Answer: | This assumes that we are talking about guppies. If so, I feed mine once a day. As for the quantity of fish, the rough ratio is 1 one-inch fish per 3 to 5 gallons, so a 29 gallon take should take 6 to 10 guppies. Keep in mind that if you have both male and female guppies, you will probably get babies as well. |
Question: | How long doesfish food stay fresh |
Answer: | I use it to feed my guppies so I dont use a lot at a time. It stayed good for several weeks for me. |
Question: | My water became very cloudy after feeding this food. I’ve been using a water softner that is supposed to be really good. What am i doing wrong |
Answer: | Water softener removes calcium and magnesium which fish and plants need and replaces with salt. This isn't ideal in regards to pH stability for buffering needs. I have used this food for a few years and never had it cause cloudy water (Hikari for over 10 years no problem). Cloudiness can be due to a bacteria bloom. Learn about the nitrification cycle and it could be what allows a successful tank. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hello! I am a bit new to keeping bettas, so I would just like to know if these should be fed only as a treat for bettas |
Answer: | Thank you for your interest in this product, Montana L.! We recommend this to be used as a treat only, a couple of times a week. |
Question: | How much should I get for a betta fish |
Answer: | Just poke a small hole in the foil and 1-2 taps is all you need. I have tropical flakes that I give mine in the morning and this at night. One bottle will easily last 3+ months with one betta. They will only eat a few worms and leave the rest to sink to bottom of tank. So, don't give them as much as you would with flakes...Unless you like cleaning the tank more often. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the size (mm) of these pellets |
Answer: | 2 mm long and 1-2 mm in diameter. |
Question: | will these work for gold fish |
Answer: | Hi Mark, As Tamara stated, bettas require a higher protein and different nutrition than goldfish. So it is okay to feed betta food as a treat or a temporary diet, but ideally, you want a goldfish diet. We recommend http://a.co/4KsGtmg. |
Question: | Will this keep my goodish beta healthy without a plant |
Answer: | I don’t see why not but this won’t make your betta happier like a plant will. I have 2 bettas eating this currently one is in a planted 20 community tank while the other is in a 10 with a few feeder guppies. Both are doing very well and are happy. I have “floaters” on the surface for my betta with no plants and she likes to “hide” under them. Maybe a floating decoration would help to make your betta happier. |
Question: | This food turned my white/opal betta fish into a pink colored fish. Anyone can reckoned a non-color boosting food betta food |
Answer: | Maybe it has the marble/koi gene. They change colors on their own regardless of food. |
