9 best broan nutone roof vents

Broan NuTone is a well-known brand that specializes in ventilation products, including roof vents. Here's some information about Broan NuTone roof vents:

  1. Ventilation Purpose:

    • Broan NuTone roof vents are designed to facilitate the proper flow of air in and out of a building, particularly in the context of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems.
  2. Types of Roof Vents:

    • Static Roof Vents: These vents are non-motorized and rely on natural convection currents to draw air in and out.
    • Powered Roof Vents: These vents are equipped with a motorized fan that actively pulls air in or expels it out. They are particularly useful for more efficient ventilation in larger spaces or areas with poor natural airflow.
  3. Materials and Durability:

    • Broan NuTone roof vents are typically constructed from durable materials such as galvanized steel or high-impact resin. This ensures longevity and resistance to the elements.
  4. Installation and Ducting:

    • Proper installation is crucial for effective ventilation. Roof vents need to be strategically placed to ensure optimal airflow. They are often connected to ducting that directs air where it's needed.
  5. Size and Capacity:

    • The size and capacity of a roof vent are important considerations. Larger vents can move more air, which is especially crucial for larger buildings or areas with high ventilation requirements.
  6. Energy Efficiency:

    • Some Broan NuTone roof vents are designed with energy-efficient features, such as variable-speed motors or thermal switches that activate the fan based on temperature.
  7. Weather Resistance:

    • Roof vents are exposed to the elements, so they need to be weather-resistant to prevent damage from rain, snow, and UV radiation.
  8. Noise Level:

    • Powered roof vents with motors produce some level of noise. Broan NuTone typically designs their products with noise reduction features to minimize disruption.
  9. Maintenance:

    • Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to ensure that the vent operates at its optimal capacity. This includes clearing debris and ensuring the motor and fan are functioning correctly.
  10. Compliance and Codes:

    • It's important to ensure that the roof vent and its installation comply with local building codes and regulations. This may include requirements for fire safety, ventilation rates, and more.

Remember that proper ventilation is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality and ensuring the effectiveness of HVAC systems.Consulting with a professional or referring to the manufacturer's guidelines is recommended to make sure the roof vent is selected and installed correctly for your specific needs.

User questions & answers

Question: pulled flapper, replaced cheesy strip at front of flap and added to other three sides with 3/16 thick, 3/8 wide foam weather strip. is this ok
Answer: No
Question: What is the function of a roof vent cap? Does it keep rain water out of house, or just keep animals out
Answer: I used one for my dryer venting through the roof and one for my bathroom fan vent. It is designed to keep the rain out and of course animals. This particular one is the "vent cap only", you really need to buy the same cap with the vent pipe or you will wind up having to buy the vent cap separately.
Question: Can the damper get frozen shut in the winter
Answer: It's possible, but not too likely. And even if it does, when the bath fan is turned on there will probably be enough air leakage that it would thaw the flap in a minute or two.
Question: I have a 12 in wide metal roof and I need to put a vent to vent out heat from the roof . Would the brown 636 work to do this
Answer: It could probably be made to work, but that's not what this vent cap was intended for. It has a flap in it that is normally closed, that would have to be removed. (This vent cap is normally used for a bathroom vent fan that will push the flap open when the fan is running.) Depending upon the style of metal roof you have, it may be difficult to get this vent cap sealed properly. This one is designed to have its upper flashing edge under shingles. If your "12 in wide metal" is in horizontal rows, that may work. Also, this vent cap is significantly smaller than what it normally used for roof vents. It will probably take three times as many of these as regular roof vents, to vent a given area of roof. In short, yes it probably could be used for a roof vent, but it would not be ideal.

User questions & answers

Question: I is said to keep out birds, does it have a screen that would keep out yellow jacket
Answer: Not really but a shelf or cabinet would be nice
Question: Does the wind cause it to chatter
Answer: Yes! The model number for the white is 403601.
Question: Can this be used to vent a cooktop hood
Answer: I had to return this item as the photo shows a 7" round outlet for exhaust on top but the item had no such outlet. I purchased the correct unit from another source and it has the outlet, round 7"
Question: Can this be installed on a new residential steel roof
Answer: No, it does not require a power cord. You have to wire it in to the existing connections.

User questions & answers

Question: what size hole saw do i need to install this
Answer: 1/8" to 1/4".....larger than the typical 4" or 6" pipe collar to be installed, well seated & sealed .
Question: Could someone be specific about how to screw this into the roof vent? I tried and failed to get this into a 4.0 inch vent hole
Answer: The lip of the Duct collar twists onto the bottom of the roof vent cap. So you’re not screwing it in with a screwdriver. You have to get it aligned and then twist it to lock it in.
Question: Hi folks. can i install the collar after installing the 636 vent cap? or do i have to attach this collar first then install the vent cap? thanks
Answer: I can't speak specifically to the 636 cap, as I've been unable to verify that the 636 requires a duct collar. If you've already determined that the 636 needs the collar, then you can definitely attach it after installing the vent cap. The only thing to be (very, very!) careful of is that you match the hole in the vent cap with the hole in the roof so that the duct collar can slide through the hole in the roof cleanly and meet up with the threaded hole on the bottom of the vent cap. My vent cap was installed by roofers who didn't make sure the holes were lined up, so I had to ask them to come back out and move the vent cap before I could attach the duct collar from inside the attic. Hope this helps!
Question: Ok lame question. Just trying to picture the installation: which side of this collar attaches to the 636 vent? The "finished" or "serrated
Answer: Your duct attaches to the corrugated , or crimped side. On the "finished side there is a lip with a slice and you screw it on to the roof vent till the whole lip is in

  • Duct conforms to UL181 Class 1 air connector requirements

User questions & answers

Question: Can I purchase only the metal duct connector
Answer: Sorry, I misread your question a few minutes ago. It is the connector, not the tubing you are asking about. I still do not know of any single-item availability from the kit, although you might have luck contacting Broan and asking. If you mean the clamp, search for a 4 inch clamp from hose clamp sellers. They should be readily available in the HVAC world, and used with clothes dryers. If you mean the actual 4 inch diameter sheet metal extension under the hood that the hose connects to, your best bet is probably to take it to a sheet metal shop and have them install one. You may, also, rig one up by attaching a piece of 4 inch cylinder using L-brackets and screws to hold the cylinder in place. Be sure to seal the interface with a long-lasting sealant, such as silicone caulking.
Question: Has anyone had issues with snow piling up too high and blocking the vent? it seems to have a low profile. i live in new england with low pitched roof
Answer: If you use it regularly the warm house air will melt any snow. The flap is protected by the top so even if covered the warm air would escape and melt the snow.
Question: Has anyone experienced problems with this vent leaking in heavy rain? Big box retailer reviews report that
Answer: We bought 2 of these exact kits from a big box retailer and after 2 years both have rusted near the base and one of them started leaking in a recent heavy rain storm. Looking to replace both of mine with galvanized vents.
Question: Is this cap made of aluminum or galvanized steel
Answer: It is not aluminum. I put a magnet on it and It did stick so it could be steel. It is painted so I don't know if it is galvanized.

User questions & answers

Question: Why is my fan so noisy
Answer: 120 VOLTS - 8 AMPS
Question: Is the included thermostat switch at the fan unit or something that can be installed remoted, for adjustments without climbing on a ladder to change
Answer: 960 watts, 1 year limited warranty, roof hole size is 14-3/8" diameter.
Question: What is the temperature range for the unit, aka what is the lowest temp at which the fan can turn on
Answer: I think you have one of two choices. Live with it, or install a smaller CFM unit. Personally, I'd learn to live with the noise. You could always add more insulation to the attic...
Question: Temperature control included
Answer: The 356BK is not designed to be used with a speed control. By using a speed control the motor will get very hot and will probably burn out prematurely.

User questions & answers

Question: so without the thermostat, does this fan run all the time while it is light out
Answer: Yes, it runs continuously when it receives light. You may purchase a Broan thermoswitch which will shut it off if the temp is less than 50 deg F (which means it'll basicaly run all the time). I purchased the thermoswitch for the Natural Light brand because it turns on at 80 and off at 70 (added benefit: it's cheaper). For my climate in Los Angeles, that range is preferable (I would think the same in other climates, too). To install, just clip off the black male spade connector of the Broan and replace it with a female and reconnect with the switch in series. The wiring that comes with the switch is not used. It's easy and it works!
Question: Can this fan sustain hurricane winds
Answer: Our unit is located on the Ocean and we have had storms but no hurricanes since it was installed.
Question: Can this be installed on a Terracotta tiled roof
Answer: Only if the tiles are relatively flat. Broan's website indicates the fan is designed for a "shingled" roof. Not much clearance between the base and the fan housing, but it woks great.
Question: Will these keep the dampness out of a shed? Shed is only 140 square feet
Answer: This fan is designed for spaces of 3200 cubic feet. We would not recommend using this fan in a small space. Please contact our Technical Support Department at 800-637-1453 for assistance in determining the best fan for your needs.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it thermostatically controlled
Answer: If you mean is it easy to see the positive & negative wires going directly into the fan, cut & splice your own switch in, bypassing thermostat.... yes it is easy to do.
Question: is the fan on the roof line or deeper
Answer: I think sealed, I don't remember any zerk fittings or oil holes to use. Mine has been in my house two years and there are no problems. I by passed the thermocouple and have it on a switch. I put one in my daughters house and used the thermocouple because she and her husband are gone quite a bit and not at home to turn it on. No issues after 18 months. Quiet because I used rubber padding between the fan and board it is connected to. It keep our upstairs a lot cooler. No issues with bearings yet, and I don't really expect any.
Question: Can this be install to an indoor patio? I have a room where the ceiling is essentially a shingled roof with no insulation or space inbetween
Answer: The thermostat is inside the fan--look at the picture, it is the little box in the lower left corner where the electrical wire is running into the fan. You can take the thermostat out as it is only attached with a couple of screws. Mounting it a few feet away from the fan is easily doable.
Question: I just installed this attic fan in my Florida which is in path of hurricane Irma. What should I expect
Answer: The fan is fairly quiet inside the house compared to others I have installed, however outside at the gable vent you can hear it very well, this fans moves a lot of air,

User questions & answers

Question: Do any of the vents have a built in flapper to keep wind from entering
Answer: This cover fits over my 14"x 14" bathroom vent. I believe the vent is a standard size. I have two other vents this size (14"x14") in my 5th wheel trailer. I can crank the vent in our bathroom about 3/4 of the way open. The vent opens and closes normally in all respects. The Camco vent cover comes with stainless steel brackets and screws to attach it to the vent. It is fairly easy to install. Dave
Question: Do any of the vents have a built in flapper to keep wind from entering
Answer: yes, it comes with brackets and screws. You will need a drill to mount the brackets to the aluminum frame of the vent, hand tighten everything, then snug them down with small wrench, screwdriver.
Question: Is the finish painted black (as shown in picture) or is it natural aluminum finish? I suspect this is aluminum with no paint
