Calibration
Accurate measurement based on carefully calibration, please calibrate the refractometer before your first use. The calibration is very easy, the product comes with a detailed operation manual, which will show you how to calibrate and operate it exactly. During normal temperature (50℉ to 86℉), you don't have to calibrate it frequently, once every a few months is OK, but during temperature below 50℉ or higher than 86℉, we still recommend you recalibrate it before use to make sure the best accuracy.
Brief Operation Step
After calibration, clean the prism with soft cloth, and then place 2-3 drops of the liquid sample to be tested on the prism, then close the cover plate and make sure the sample spreads across the prism without air bubbles or dry spots. Wait for about 30 seconds to let the reading to stabilize. Align the prism assembly with the light source, look into the eyepiece and you can get the reading.

In my saltwater tank, when my refractometer says 1.025, this checker will read 1.023. It's very handy and easy to use, plus confirms my tank temperature, so I use it often, realizing it won't read the same as my refractometer. I don't know or care which one is actually correct, the tank is fine at whatever level this actually is. |

Answer: | You still want to wait for suspended salt to dissolve, salt goes though a chemical reaction while it’s mixing with water and during that reaction it’s harmful to any aquatic life in contact. So wait till it’s fully dissolved, example if I put 1 cup of my mix in 2 gallons of water mix it up and than test while salt isn’t dissolved I’ll get a reading of 17PPT, if I wait 10min while the power head stirs it up longer as it dissolves at 75f the salinity reading changes to close to 35PPT ether 1-2 ppt over depending kn how much salt I added. Ie how much unser a cup or slightly over a cup. Temperature plays a key role to, warmer water can hold more salt |

Answer: | Yes, you can easily measure 2500 ppm. In fact one can measure ppm of 9000 easily. I was able to measure ppm of about 9500. But once the ppm of the salt solution exceeds 10,000, the salinity checker display went blank and was not able to read anything. Note that the instrument is rated to measure a ppm of 9999. |

Answer: | We sell typically sell our 250 ml bottle of AccuBrate to calibrate a hydrometer. If you click on our 250 ml bottle description you will see information about calibrating a hydrometer. The exact steps are on the back of our 250 ml bottle. Basically you shake the AccuBrate, rinse the hydrometer, slowly pour AccuBrate into the hydrometer to avoid bubbles, gently tap the hydrometer to release any bubbles attached to the swingarm. Now read the hydrometer. The salinity should read 1.026. If it reads 1.024 then you know your hydrometer is off by .002. Answer: | Since your reading is at 1.022 you need to re-calibrate your refractometer. It is best to follow the operations manual that came with your refractometer or if you can find your model's manual online. If you do not have a manual here is how I calibrate my refractometer. 1. Make sure your glass prism slide and cover flap are clean. Use distilled water when cleaning. Use a soft clean cloth to completely dry glass prism and cover flap. 2. Add 2 to 3 drops of fluid on your refractometer's prism slide and let it sit for about 60 seconds. This allows the sample to adjust to the temperature of your refractometer. 3. Look into the eyepiece and turn the Calibration Screw with your small screw driver that came with your refractometer. The calibration screw is typically located on the top of the refractometer. Slightly turn the screw until the scale reads 1.026 or 35 ppt 4. Your refractometer is now calibrated and ready to test your aquarium. Your hydrometer reading 1.024 means it is reading a few points low. We typically take a black sharpie and write on our hydrometer plus .002. Answer: | First, you would have to define “easily readable”. I have terrible eyesight and bifocals. I need my son to read the numbers because they are so tiny through the eyepiece. It measures quiet accurately and is the gold standard for saltwater aquariums. However, I don’t know if it would work quite as well on a ppt scale. The device measures in specific gravity numbers and ppt. It does read to 0 on the ppt side, but I can’t be sure if it will be that specific for you. You may want to start with the cheaper hydrometer or a more expensive electronic reader. Check out WikiHow’s How to measure salinity. It gives directions on 3 different ways. |

Calibration: Place a few drops of distilled water on the prism and use the screwdriver to adjust the calibration screw untill the reading is"0".

After calibration, place a few drops of solution you want to test on the prism.

Close the daylight plate and hold it under a light source, then look through the eyepiece, you can get the reading.

Clean the instrument with a soft cloth after use, and put it into the storage case.
