The projections inside the bowl prevent the dog from sticking his whole snout inside the bowl, and that would work for water too as long as the bowl was the proper size for the size of the dog-notice that the bowl does come in different sizes. |

My friend's puppy still uses his (he is 5 months old and about 40 pounds) without a problem. |
