12 best flea treatments for cats

Flea treatments for cats are essential for protecting your feline companion from flea infestations, which can cause discomfort and potential health issues. Here's what you need to know about flea treatments for cats, including flea drops:

  1. Flea Drops (Topical Treatments): Flea drops, also known as topical flea treatments, are liquid medications applied directly to your cat's skin, usually at the base of the neck or between the shoulder blades. These drops are absorbed into the skin and provide long-lasting protection against fleas.

  2. Active Ingredients: The active ingredients in flea drops vary depending on the brand and product. Common active ingredients include fipronil, imidacloprid, selamectin, and pyrethroids. These substances target adult fleas, preventing them from biting and reproducing.

  3. Mode of Action: Flea drops work by spreading through your cat's skin oils, creating a barrier that kills and repels fleas. Some products also provide protection against ticks and other parasites.

  4. Duration of Effectiveness: The duration of protection provided by flea drops can range from one to several months, depending on the specific product. Some are designed to be applied monthly, while others offer longer-lasting coverage.

  5. Prescription vs. Over-the-Counter: Many flea drops for cats are available over-the-counter, while others may require a prescription from a veterinarian. Prescription products may offer broader protection or be recommended for specific cases, such as severe flea infestations.

  6. Safety Considerations: Flea drops are generally safe when used as directed. However, it's crucial to select a product appropriate for your cat's age, weight, and health status. Always follow the dosing instructions carefully to avoid overdosing. If you have multiple pets, be cautious about allowing them to groom each other immediately after application, as some products can be toxic if ingested.

  7. Complementary Products: In addition to flea drops, there are other flea control products available for cats, such as flea collars, oral medications, and shampoos. Some cat owners choose to use a combination of these products for comprehensive flea control, depending on their cat's needs and preferences.

  8. Regular Application: Consistency is key to effective flea control. Most flea drops require monthly application to maintain protection. Missing a dose can leave your cat vulnerable to flea infestations.

  9. Consultation with a Veterinarian: Before choosing a flea treatment for your cat, it's advisable to consult with a veterinarian. They can recommend the most suitable product based on your cat's health, lifestyle, and potential exposure to fleas.

Flea treatments are essential for keeping your cat healthy and comfortable. Fleas can not only cause itching and skin irritation but can also transmit diseases. Regular flea prevention and maintenance are crucial to ensure the well-being of your feline friend and to prevent fleas from becoming a problem in your home.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this 6 month supply a 6 pack of tubes
Answer: Hi Doreen... Actually, I bought the 4 pack because I have four cats. I had earlier in the month bought a 4 pack someplace else, so I had two treatments for each cat. I did the treatments three weeks apart (the instructions say it is OK to do if you wait seven days). I bought the 9+ lb. package as three of the cats are well over that weight. One cat is a bit smaller and I didn't use quite all of the tube on her. None of the cats had any bad reactions, and it worked well for three of them. The other cat (partial Maine Coon) had some results, but not so good.
Question: Does this kill ticks? If not, what do people recommend for ticks
Answer: To get rid of fleas and ticks use Frontline Plus. I started to use it on mine a year ago it killed the ticks and fleas. I reapply it every other month and I haven’t seen one since.
Question: When using this medicine, do I also need to flea bomb or spray the apartment ? Or will the medicine kill all fleas in the apartment, as well
Answer: VACUUM EVERY DAY. Or at least every other day. You will NEVER get rid of all the fleas if you don't treat the environment as well as the animal(s). In addition to the Advantage II, I used Knockout spray and also shampooed my cat. She has now had two doses of the Advantage and I have been spraying and vacuuming every other day and I finally feel like I have the upper hand! Even when you think they are gone, keep treating your cat and house. All it takes is one flea to start an infestation.
Question: Why is the item called "Bayer K9 Advantix II Flea and Tick Control Treatment for Cats"? The Bayer K9 is, of course, for dogs
Answer: Please be sure to use ONLY Feline Advantage on cats and use ONLY the dog Advantage on dogs! The use of canine Advantage on cats WILL kill them giving them severe neurological damage! I wish that Advantage would make the packaging TOTALLY different for cats and dogs, it would help. Especially with people who may not see the difference at first glance. My elderly mom accidentally applied the large dog Advantage to her cat and it had to be put down. Mom has felt horrible about it. Awful experience. Also about dosing, I have a 19 year old cat and I have used feline Advantage on him every summer for about 3 months for well over 17 years. It works wonderfully for him. I have always used the large cat product but since he has lost some weight this year I called Bayer and asked if I should use a smaller dose. The person at Bayer explained that Advantage works on body AREA as well as weight. So even though my cat has lost some weight (he's 9 pounds) his body AREA is still the same (loose skin) and so I have been applying the large cat dose and it has worked well for him this summer with no ill effects. I cannot speak to the authenticity of this Amazon product as I purchase my Advantage from the local pet store.

User questions & answers

Question: Has product been updated to 2019? Also....dumb question, but how do you use it
Answer: Yes it has . I put it directly on my cats back of the neck on the skin . It works great I have no fleas on all 3 of my cats . I highly recommend this product.
Question: What is the difference between Advantage II and Advantage 9 Topical Solution
Answer: The Advantage II which I use is only for fleas not ticks. It comes in a tube and you apply it between the shoulder blades. As for Advantage 9, I have never heard of it. But I can tell you that neither my dog or my cat has had fleas with this product.
Question: LICE
Answer: It worked on lice for the cats I put it on. One of them had a bad infestation. She’ll need more applied again. The life cycle is 3-4 weeks of a louse.
Question: How do you get the packaging open from Walmart? It is in a hard plastic case. Cannot open
Answer: Did you steal this? The hard case is for anti theft. The product is taken out of the case at checkout. Take your receipt back to Walmart and have them take it out of the case!

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a smell - chopped it up put in wet food cat would not touch it
Answer: No it does not smell. Do not chop it up . Take a little bit of the cat food and roll the pill in it. Then place the pill covered in cat food on top of the rest of the cat food. Make sure your cat is hungry, like the first thing in the morning.
Question: Can this be given in addition to a topical flea solution
Answer: A vet tech told me it is ok , but I play it safe and apply the topical (Advantage) 24 hours after the Capstar.
Question: Is this the medicine that makes the cat act nervous like something is biting it after about 20 minutes giving the pill
Answer: Capstar affect the nervous system of the fleas and they get spastic. The fleas get into a frenzy and squirm around on the cat. All that movement on the cats skin drive them a little crazy for 30-60 minutes.
Question: What is the difference between this and blue label Capstar
Answer: I would call the company, and see if they say, "We can get double our money for anyone with a small dog AND a cat." Many do not like cats as well as dogs and if the designers of this drug are members of those who like one species of pets, they may not care if your cat gets poisoned. and there are many foods that cats or dogs find poisonous, and for many who have indoor cats, the pills may expire before needing to use more.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on kittens
Answer: Cheristin products do not have an expiration date on them. This is because they are controlled by the EPA, not the FDA. The EPA says that because these products are produced with 5 years of shelf life and that they are packaged in either 1 packs or 6 packs, it is reasonable to assume that they will be used within 2 years and therefore no expiration date on the packaging is required.
Question: Do I need to separate other pets
Answer: Not that I have noticed, but I have sinus issues so may not be as sensitive to smell!
Question: i couldn't find the product for kitten less than 1 pound (about 4 month). can this one work
Answer: No. Cheristin is for cats only.
Question: Does this come in 4 dose
Answer: Yes rhis one is only a single dose however you can get 6 pack doses as well usually around 70 to 80 bucks but its well worth the money.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product also kill ear mites and mosquitoes as Revolution does? Thank you
Answer: This doesn't even kill fleas.
Question: I accidentally bought the the 5-9 lb. size for my cat that weighs 13 pounds. Should I use 2 tubes instead of one
Answer: No, just use one. You may have to re-apply after 2-3 weeks but that is perfectly safe according to my vet.
Question: Expiration dates
Answer: No exp date since there is no heartworm prevention in this there is no need for an exp date and as long as you follow the recommendations for temperatures to store it in it should be good and effective indefinitely
Question: hi, is anyone that uses this actually seeing the dead fleas on their floors? like advantage 2? thanks need 2 no
Answer: Its kept my dog flea free. Best yet, she's deathly allergic to Fipronil flea meds suddenly as a senior. Advantage and this generic have produced zero side effects in her, although I was terrified to use anything after a terrible reaction to her usual flea products last summer. With a new puppy, a 1 year old, and 2 cats, skipping flea prevention wasn't an option. So far, this has been wonderful. By the way, if your pets show any signs of an immediate reaction to any flea products, immediately bathe them in blue Dawn dishwashing liquid. I'd changed vets and the new vet failed to tell me all the regular shampoos weren't helping because flea meds are oil based. Only Dawn will get it off, hopefully before it's been absorbed in the bloodstream. Dawn and 2 weeks of subQ fluids even 4 days later saved my dog's life.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the ingredients
Answer: Under "Important Information" it states: "Active Ingredients: Peppermint Oil...0.20%, Eugenol (from Clove plants)...0.46%, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (plant-derived)...1.78%, Inert Ingredients* ...97.56%, *Water, Sodium Benzoate (preservative widely used in foods)." I believe the ingredient list given by "anonymous da" is for the dog version (https://www.amazon.com/Vets-Best-Natural-Flea-Spray/dp/B003PRI6OC). I haven't purchased either, just going by the information given on the product pages.
Question: Would this work for rabbits
Answer: I am not sure I would call your vet, just on a side note this did not work on my cats.
Question: I read that pepperment oil is harmful to cats-what is everyone's take on this
Answer: Most essential oils are toxic to cats. Normally we, and other animals, have an enzyme in our liver to break down the components of essential oils. However, cats do not have this enzyme. So, the toxic components of the oils biomagnify (build up) over time, and cause severe liver damage, neurological issues, immune system failure, and eventually death. Think of it this way, dogs cannot have too much chocolate for a very similar reason. Their bodies were not designed to digest and break down cacao like ours is. Eventually, too much chocolate will kill them.
Question: What is the difference between this product (for cats) vs the same home spray marketed toward dogs? And why is this one so much more expensive
Answer: Brittany's answer is not exactly correct. Close, though. The "cat" version simply reduces the amount of clove oil (eugenol) and the surfactant, sodium lauryl sulfate. Thank you to Vet's Best for being on top of that. The "cat" version will work just fine on dogs and as a spray for bedding and carpet. It is cedar oil that is toxic to cats (and who else?) and this product does not contain that.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the expiration date on these & the 6 pack
Answer: Not sur but check to see date
Question: Does this have an aroma
Answer: I'm not sure why, but the manufacturer instructions indicate not to bath your dog for 48 hours before the application.
Question: Are there Cheristin for dogs
Answer: Yes it does come with the application point. It also comes with a push down and screw method to release the treatment.
Question: Is this I piece a pack? Thank you
Answer: I live in upstate NY on 15 acres of pines , ticks are very nasty this year along with mosquitos , before we put on are dog we had found a few ticks just from walking trails, (normal) but since then it's been almost a month his Drops are due Thursday again and he hasn't had a single ticket or flea or bug bits . I've used other more costly drops but this brand has always been the best for my dog (go figure a mutt needs cheaper things than a purebred)

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this product with a flea collar
Answer: No, one or the other
Question: Why is there no review
Answer: We've switched over to this product almost a year ago from the much more expensive PetArmor Plus and AdvectaII brands and have notice zero difference (probably because they all contain the SAME active ingredients!). I'm very happy with paying less with the Amazon brand and getting the same thing. I've been lazy to write a review but I'll do it now.
Question: Will this work for ear mites
Answer: I'm not sure but one way to check is to find a few ear mites meds and compare their active ingredient(s) with what's found in this product (Fipronil 9.8%, methoprene 11.8%). You might also ask your local vet office/clinic or maybe a helpful clerk at a pet supply store.
Question: Have 11 lb cat, will this work
Answer: Yes it did works, my cat runs around 10 to 12 pounds as well. I didn’t see any fleas after 1 to 2 days

Hartz

Based on 8 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Tell pesky parasites to ‘bug off’ with the Hartz UltraGuard Flea & Tick Treatment for Cats and Kittens. Each convenient and easy to apply, single dose tube kills fleas and deer ticks. Also repels mosquitos. Use only on cats and kittens 12 weeks and older weighing 5 pounds and over. Package contains three treatments —a three-month supply.

Directions: Remove one applicator tube from package and hold in an upright position away from your face. Pull off cap. Turn the cap around and place on top of tube. Simply press cap down to break the seal of the tube and remove cap carefully. Position the tip of the tube at the base of the pet's back between the shoulder blades and squeeze out the entire contents of the tube to form a stripe as you move from the shoulder blades along the back to the base of the tail. The treated area may appear oily after application. Repeat every month. Consult a veterinarian before using this product on debilitated, aged or medicated pets. If signs of sensitivity occur, bathe your pet with mild soap and rinse with large amount of water. If signs continue, consult a veterinarian immediately.

  • Topical drop formula kills fleas and deer ticks
  • Includes 3 monthly treatments in easy to apply, single dose tubes
  • Repels mosquitoes for 18 days
  • For use on cats and kittens 12 weeks and older weighing 5 pounds and over

User questions & answers

Question: Shelf life of the product
Answer: Yes, they do.
Question: why not bathe the dog prior to application
Answer: My one cat is very fussy about drops. This one actually seemed to bother him less. Hopefully it works as well as Frontline!
Question: Does it come with the pointy application tip? The picture on the box here does not show the tip type that we buy at the store
Answer: No issue with skin burns. But here in California the product did not appear to be very effective. The vet says local fleas have become resistant to the ingredients.
Question: we don't have a flea problem in my area, but need a good tick and mosquito prevention for the pups. Does this product work well for that
Answer: If the scabs are in the spot where you put the medicine I would not. I would assume my cat was having a bad reaction to Pet Armour and switch to something else. I used Advantage on my cat and he was scratching so much he had hair loss and it scabbed for several weeks. I switched to Pet Armor and he doesn't seem to have a a bad reaction. I think you need to find what will work best for your cat. Make sure you wait at least 2 weeks before trying something new and don't put it on the scabbed spot. Consult your vet if your having problems.
