13 best pond de icers
A pond de-icer is a device used to prevent the water in outdoor ponds, water gardens, and other water features from freezing during cold weather. These devices are commonly used in regions with harsh winters to protect fish and aquatic plants in the pond. Here are some key points about pond de-icers:
Function: Pond de-icers work by keeping a small area of the pond's surface ice-free. They typically consist of a heating element or a submersible heater that generates heat to melt the ice around it. This opening allows for the exchange of gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide, which is essential for the survival of fish and other aquatic life.
Types: There are different types of pond de-icers available on the market. The most common types include floating de-icers and submersible de-icers. Floating de-icers float on the water's surface, while submersible de-icers are placed underwater to heat the water from below.
Energy Source: Pond de-icers can be powered by electricity, propane, or solar energy, depending on the model. Electric de-icers are plugged into an electrical outlet, while propane de-icers use propane tanks. Solar de-icers use solar panels to harness energy from the sun.
Size and Wattage: The size and wattage of a pond de-icer should be chosen based on the size and depth of your pond. Larger and deeper ponds may require more powerful de-icers to keep the ice at bay effectively.
Safety: When using electric pond de-icers, it's important to follow safety guidelines to prevent electrical hazards. Ensure that the de-icer is properly grounded and placed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Installation: Installing a pond de-icer is relatively straightforward. Floating de-icers are placed on the surface of the water, while submersible de-icers are positioned underwater. Proper positioning is essential to create an ice-free area.
Winter Pond Care: In addition to using a pond de-icer, it's important to prepare your pond for winter by removing debris and reducing the amount of organic matter in the water. This helps maintain water quality during the colder months.
Maintenance: Regularly check and clean your pond de-icer to ensure it functions efficiently. Remove any debris or ice buildup that may hinder its performance.
Benefits: Using a pond de-icer helps prevent the formation of ice dams, which can cause damage to the pond and harm aquatic life. It also ensures a continuous supply of oxygen to fish and other organisms in the pond.
Overall, a pond de-icer is a valuable tool for pond owners in cold climates, as it helps maintain a healthy and habitable environment for aquatic life during the winter months. Proper selection and maintenance of a pond de-icer are crucial for its effective operation.

Question: | I have a small pumphouse...pump not below frostline...is set in the hole will it keep area from freezing |
Answer: | The Farm Innovators Floating Pond De Icer is designed to keep your decorative water garden free of potentially harmful surface forming ice in cold climates. A virtually indestructible cast aluminum body houses the powerful 1,250 watt heating element which quickly opens a hole in the surface of your pond allowing harmful gases to escape. The Farm Innovators Floating Pond Deicer is thermostatically controlled and turns on only when temperatures drop below 35°F. The Farm Innovators Floating Pond De-Icer comes with a 10' power cord and is safe for rubber and plastic liners. |
Question: | does it float |
Answer: | The bottom of the heater gets hot however it does not sit fully flat due to the power cable entering thru the bottom. If your crock does not have water in it and the temp goes below 35 degress it will remain on so keep that in consideration. It gets hot enough that it does melt ice. However depending on the width and depth of your crock it may not unfreeze it now or keep it totally unfrozen. I have it at the edge of my pond which is about 6 inches deep and right now with the below zero weather we have been having it is keeping a hole about 1 foot in diameter. Warmer temps in the 20's or so it keeps a larger area unfrozen. |
Question: | The ice has already frozen. Can I put the rock on the ice while plugged in and wait for it to melt though |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have a fish pond, some 500 gal, with mollies, goldfish and pictus catfish. Can the thermostat setting be chg'd to come on, at say 40 deg |
Answer: | Yes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have 5000 gallons pond which one i need |
Answer: | Its just designed to keep a hole in the ice for gasses to escape, not to heat the pond. you could go with any of them to keep the water open. I would probably get the larger one for that big of a pond |
Question: | Heating 55 gallon barrel. Is 1500 watts enough? Too much? Should we go with |
Answer: | To determine the proper wattage for your tank size and climate, please consult our Stock Tank Zone Chart. You can find it here: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/aplusautomation/vendorimages/eb9166e6-c667-48fc-9e90-cc782ea08e66.jpg._CB291565557_.jpg |
Question: | Is tnhis thefmostastically controlled |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Why would air bubbles be completely covering the interior water surface of the flotation device? I don’t remember this happening with the other model |
Answer: | The difference in temperature between the water inside the ring of the K&H Perfect Climate Deluxe Pond De-icer and the water outside the ring can create foam. The foam is harmless and completely normal for this product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this cord have a two- or three-prong plug |
Answer: | This item is only 100 watts and only 'turns on' when temperatures are around 32 degrees. Its operating cost would be minimal. |
Question: | Can you us an extension cord with this? My pond is not that close to the house |
Answer: | We have a pond that is around 800 gallon. It works in ours. This heater is only made to keep a hole in the ice so all the gasses from decaying stuff under the ice don't kill the fish. Hope this helps. Richard |
Question: | How do you turn it on |
Answer: | Although I have not measured it, I'd guess it is at least 10 feet. Very long, but it tends to "remember" the coil shape. I put rocks on the cord to keep it from pulling the unit towards shore. I would highly recommend this product for keeping a hole in the ice over the winter. I've bought 2 in the last 7 years and the only reason for the second one was that I dropped the first one and cracked it, rendering it useless. I've also discovered that when the temps get close to or fall below zero, placing a black plastic tarp over the unit will help keep it from freezing up. I have seen it melt and maintain a hole through 6-9 inches of ice. Another thing to remember that once the ice forms and you place it, future snow falls will encase the cord in ice and you will not be able to move it. Allow additional cord so it cal maintain contact with the water. |
Question: | Is it 120 watts or 12 watts? what does "12 watts of heating power" mean |
Answer: | The unit is a de-icer. Is your pond cover with ice? This is my second unit, the first one lasted 10 years with no problems. I have a Koi pond that is 3,000 gallons and 4 foot deep in the center and the pond with this cold weather is covered with ice 12 inches thick. If your pond is ice covered they suggest you drill a hole thru the ice and place the unit over the hole, it will eventually melt the ice surrounding it, just as mine did. My unit keeps a hole in the 12 inch ice as big as the entire unit. Again this is not a pond heater, it is used to keep an open hole in the ice so the gases that are harmful to the fish can escape. The unit doesn't make any noise and it only gets warm on the bottom when the thermostat calls for heat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the average monthly cost to run this heater? I have heard that 1,500 watt heaters can cost up to 75$ a month to run |
Answer: | How much of an area it will keep open depends on the size of the pond and the outside temperature. It's purpose is to keep a hole in the surface, for gas exchange. I've used it in a very large pond and found it kept a sizable area open though, unless extremely cold temps last for days. |
Question: | Our pond is only 55 gal. Is this heater ok to use? Or do you know a model that would work |
Answer: | Thanks for asking! Yes, this product floats. For more help contact TetraPond at [email protected]. We are happy to help! |
Question: | How long is the power cord |
Answer: | No. I have had customers try this. It does not work. Boil some water on the stove and pour onto the ice until you melt a hole to float the heater in. |
Question: | I just bought this and had it in my pond for a day & noticed no change. How do I know if its working? It makes no noise & doesn't seem to get warm |
Answer: | As the customers stated, no, you cannot set this like a heater. Your mollies and pictus cannot be housed outdoors over winter, although the goldfish can be. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with solar power |
Answer: | Solar power doesn’t have a steady current (it fluctuates) and therefore it will not work properly. |
Question: | Wish you would sell me one of these without the thermostat control... any chance |
Answer: | I am not aware of any products from this company that are not thermostatically controlled. |
Question: | Does this have an internal thermostat to turn the heater off when "its warm"? If so, what is the turn off temperature |
Answer: | Adding one comment to the earlier answer. If your water level gets low (this is a fairly tall heater so you should never go below about 6" of water) and the outside temp is low, there is no safety turnoff. So if it's 30 out and the livestock drink the tank down to a couple inches of water, the heater will glow red until you add water. Not a problem with the product since it can't tell if it is surrounded by cold water or air, just a tip to keep the water at a minimum depth so you don't waste power. |
Question: | We bought to and ran them to the tanks on heavy duty extension cords-neither will turn on. What could be the issue |
Answer: | I don't know what kind of breaker you're on. If you're on a 10 or 20 amp breaker, it all depends on what else you've got on that circuit. If you're on 120 volt AC current and you add two 750 watt tank heaters, you've added a 25 amp load to your breaker, and it kicked off. I'd advise putting each heater on separate breakers. They may be simply overloading it. Despite my glowing review, which was based on last year's mild winter, this year we have more sub-zero weather. The 750 watt heater in a 75 gallon tank crapped out on me at -10F and so did a separate 40 gallon tank with the 500 watt heater. I then used an old 1,000 watt floater I had around, and that died last night. I had to get two submersible 1500 watt heaters at the local feed & grain. As I type this, it's going down to -12F and I just blew the house breaker I have one of the tank heaters plugged into. It's a 1902 house that got electricity in 1931 and an oddly configured 1964 upgrade. The parlor lights, porch light, and outside outlet are all on one 20 amp circuit as well as pet heaters for two outside cats, and a heated water dish. I'm on my way out to unplug the cord, dig 50 feet of it out of the snow, and try plugging it into a 20 amp plug in my shop in the barn - have to make sure the other heater, which is plugged into a barn outlet, isn't on the same breaker. Trouble is, if it goes out in the night, I won't know it. Well, good luck to us all. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for a 5, 000 gallon Koi pond? Getting ready to set a pond up and want to make sure i have the right things for a under ground pond |
Answer: | I purchased this for my chicken waterer that I made from a 35 gallon square trash can with horizontal nipples on three sides. It works awesomely! I was worried the 250w heater was not going to be warm enough, so I went with this 500w heater. I have it floating. My nipples are less than twelve inches from the ground. When the garbage can was full of water a few days ago and temperatures dropped to -3 F degrees, the water was nice and warm compared to the outside temps. This heater exceeded my expectations!! Based on my experience, I would purchase only one 750w for your 55 gallon drum. I know you were asking in July, but my experience is based on this winter. Perhaps this will help others. I hope you made the right decision. |
Question: | What is the warranty on the pond deicer Aquascape |
Answer: | Solar power doesn’t have a steady current (it fluctuates) and therefore it will not work properly. |
Question: | Does it help to keep water in the pond between 60 to 68 degree F |

If your water level gets low (this is a fairly tall heater so you should never go below about 6" of water) and the outside temp is low, there is no safety turnoff. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this up your electric bill alot |
Answer: | Didnt seem to use much electric. I leave mine in a 55 gallon plastic barrel of water for rabbits all winter and I dont notice it on the bill |
Question: | Will this melt the pond liner |
Answer: | It is made to NOT melt a plastic tank, but if it were to drift to the edge of a "beach" area where the water is shallow, it's hard to know if the pond liner could withstand the heat. Make an anchor (e.g. concrete block) and tie the power cord (at the point where it enters the heater body) to the anchor so it holds itself in position in the center of the pond. That will leave the power cord free to connect to your extension cord. |
Question: | what size gfi shouldi use |
Answer: | We use a 20 amp and have never had any trouble. |
Question: | Would this work in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket for chicken water through the winter |
Answer: | It would, but it’s a bit aggressive of a heater for that size. Mine is for a 400 gallon little duck pond (8x4x2’) and it works great! For a bucket I’d go smaller tho. |

Question: | If using vertical to move floating weeds what is the minimum water depth need to be |
Answer: | About 8’ |
Question: | Can you this's with some type of speed control or rhesotat |
Answer: | No. Well, you could and for a short time it might even operate. However in short order it will burn out. So, as they say, dont try this at home. And, dont be that guy. Thanks for asking! Water Land and Home |
Question: | How many hp (1/2 or 3/4) for indiana winter 60-acre lake. Dock is 17' with pontoon boat. Is kasco deicer a good product |
Answer: | YES - the motor will operate in 2ft of water however it will not be very efficient at all. It relies on the movement of water as well as drawing water from the lowest level closest to the lake bed. Its hard to make a prediction but in Indiana with 2ft of water you may only keep a 10ft area open. IF you were to proceed, you should have one on the front and one on the back of the boat to make sure it keeps the area open. Also, because you are now adding cost because of the 2nd unit, its a good time to consider a thermostatic timer so that they both arent running when the temps are warmer. IF you do go with 2, a 1/2 hp would be fine for this application. if u have additional questions, give me a call at 877 224 4899 Bruce, Water Land and Home |
Question: | How many amps do these units require |
Answer: | 6.7 amps - let us know if you need any further info - we have em ready to ship - thanks! Water Land & Home (our Amazon store) |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much does it rust |
Answer: | It’ll rust a little but not enough to interfere with its function. |
Question: | I have a 210-gallon hot tub; will it keep it from freezing in a power outage with temps close to zero |
Answer: | No it will not keep the complete tub from freezing. |
Question: | Using to keep ice bath from freezing outside, will it still work if its sitting sorta tilted & not flat |
Answer: | I don’t know what an ice bth is.This heater drops to the bottom.. I don’t see any reason why it would matter if it isn’t a flat bottom or if the heater is at an angle as long as the water space is large enough for the heater to be submerged. But I don’t actually understand your situation. Sorry I can’t be any more helpful. |
Question: | Can this be used in a pond that has turtles in it |
Answer: | Yes. I have used them for years in a250 gallon plastic turtle pond over the water pump bottom filter. They only last about 1-2 years though. My turtles sometimes huddle around it. Chicken wire cage is probably a good idea though. But won't burn them under that much water. Don't heat it for very long out of water. Only use with a GFI outlet. |
