13 best rv solar kit

An RV solar kit is a specialized setup designed to harness solar energy to power various electrical systems and appliances in recreational vehicles (RVs). These kits are particularly popular among RV enthusiasts who want to reduce their reliance on traditional power sources, such as generators or campground hookups, and enjoy the benefits of clean, renewable energy while on the road. Here are some key features and information about RV solar kits:

  1. Solar Panels: The core component of an RV solar kit is the solar panels. These panels are typically made of photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity. The size and capacity of the solar panels in the kit determine how much energy can be generated.

  2. Charge Controller: RV solar kits often include a charge controller. This device regulates the power generated by the solar panels and ensures that the RV's batteries are charged safely and efficiently. It prevents overcharging and damage to the battery bank.

  3. Battery Bank: To store the electricity generated by the solar panels, RVs are equipped with a battery bank. These deep-cycle batteries store excess energy for use during periods of low sunlight or at night when the solar panels are not actively generating power.

  4. Inverter: An inverter is an essential component that converts the DC (direct current) electricity stored in the battery bank into AC (alternating current) electricity, which is used to power most RV appliances and devices.

  5. Mounting Hardware: RV solar kits typically include the necessary mounting hardware for securing the solar panels to the RV's roof or another suitable location. Proper installation is crucial for optimizing energy capture.

  6. Wiring and Cables: The kit also includes wiring and cables to connect the solar panels, charge controller, battery bank, and inverter. These components ensure that electricity flows efficiently and safely throughout the RV's electrical system.

  7. Monitoring System: Some RV solar kits come with a monitoring system that allows users to track the performance of the solar panels and the state of charge of the batteries. This information helps users manage their energy usage effectively.

  8. Expandability: RV solar kits can often be expanded by adding more solar panels and batteries to increase the system's capacity. This flexibility allows users to customize their setup based on their energy needs.

  9. Environmental Benefits: RV solar kits are eco-friendly as they reduce the need for fossil fuel generators and decrease the carbon footprint associated with RV travel. They provide a clean and sustainable source of energy.

In summary, an RV solar kit is a comprehensive solution for RV owners looking to harness solar energy to power their vehicles and appliances. These kits provide the necessary components, including solar panels, charge controllers, battery banks, and inverters, to create an efficient and eco-friendly power generation and storage system for RVs, enabling more self-sufficiency and freedom while on the road.

User questions & answers

Question: dimensions of the panel
Answer: Why is there 4 answers for a physical dimension? The picture shows one, a customer measured his about that, but the spec sheet and seller say a much different number. Please check again.
Question: Can this kit be upgraded to the better controller
Answer: this kit CAN BE upgraded, by buying a different brand. the charge controller is junk. it will not charge my battery that is less that 10% drained.
Question: Looking to get a solar option for charging laptops and small electronics in my van (vandweller). Would this work? or need x
Answer: this kit will work way beyond that as long as you have enough batteries to hook it up to.it can charge your van battery and run 12 volt appliances through your cigarette lighter or run 120 volt appliances with an inverter that can handle the amount of watts you want to use.be careful of sensitive electronics while using a cheap inverter.you may need a sine wave inverter.i would highly recommend a good group of deep cycle batteries.the more batteries the more you can run.check out youtube for lots of answers.hope I was able to help
Question: How many amps are charging the battery while inuse, on a sunny day
Answer: I purchased this system to act as a 'test bed' prior to buying my main dual-axis 2 panel system (Two 250W, 24V 8A panels). It's a monocrystilline 100w panel stated to output 5 amps, 12volts. I see consistent 13~14 volts at 4 amps, and have hit 5 amps on really good days (but 4A are more realistic). As a test item, I had it charging a 73AH Deep Cycle Gel battery from West Marine (the panel came with a 30A PWM charge controller). It worked fine and charged the battery in a matter of short hours ( I have both an amp meter and a volt meter connected to track its output). Previously, I was using two 45W amorphous panels (Harbor Freight) that took up to 4 days to do what this one panel can do in 4 hours. Buy with confidence.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this power a small shed with light and small power tools
Answer: The solar panel is used to charge a 12 volt deep cycle battery. The battery is then connected to an inverter power supply that converts 12 volts dc to 120 volts ac. The answer to your question is no it will not power the shed by itself. The more batteries you use the more power you can store. One battery and a 1000 watt inverter should power a light and small power tools.
Question: I need help configuring a run of 40ft from my solar panels to my greenhouse to run air circulating fans. Do I keep the controller and battery close
Answer: Keep the solar panel controller and Battery as close as possible then run your 40 feet to the fan motor from the battery. You can keep the solar panel up to 20 feet away from the controller with no problem
Question: Do I need blocking diodes
Answer: No
Question: What does the set button do on the controller
Answer: Turn the USB port on and off also set the voltage at which it will automatically turn off if it goes below a certain voltage that you said like 11 or 12 volts so you don't run the battery down

Question: Do I need to ground all negative terminals (solar panel, controller, inverter, and battery) to a standard 8ft. grounding rod driven into the Earth
Answer: Hello, you just need to ground the inverter.
Question: What plug type is required on the ac output of the inverter? it’s not a standard 110-120vac receptacle
Answer: Hello, the plug of the inverter is an American universal plug, can be used for American equipment.
Question: This is where I'm seeing about a Cable."You only need one battery cable, and this solar panel kit includes all cables except the battery cable
Answer: The seller makes this very confusing in the description. Our order arrived with a battery cable with two ring terminals for the (+) and (-) side of the battery. It's about 10 feet long with Chinese only writing on the jacket with no indication of gauge. However, since you need to wire up the two batteries in parallel, you'll need to cut part of the cable and crimp on your own ring terminals to make the connection between the two batteries. So in a way, yes, you do need a battery cable but only between the two batteries to wire them in parallel and there is plenty of extra with the supplied cable. Hope that helps!

User questions & answers

Question: CE marking on this product
Answer: 70% real world output is about average output. So you can expect about 11a total output from a 200w panel.
Question: how many amps does the load connection have. I want to run a 5 amp fan
Answer: With all solar panels you do not hook the panel directly to the battery you have to have a charge controller. I use mine every day to charge my jump box and batteries for my solar generator. Works very well. I do recommend opening the black box and making sure all you tabs are connected well, before installing.
Question: Can I pair mor then the 2 solar panels? I want to put a total of
Answer: In Full sun light it can produce 4-5 amps at about 18-20 volts. Doing the math 4x18=72 watts. I did measure under ideal conditions 20V and about 5A. Doing the math 5x20=100 watts. But But realistically under most conditions the average out put on a give full Sun cloudless day it is more like 4A and 19 volts. 4x19=76watts. Every installation and location is efferent, but this is a rough theoretical estimation. I fireguard on the slightly lower side as dust on the panels and in the air, haze and clouds (often there are high thin clouds that are not easily seen on a bright day). Also remember if you use a charge controller made for solar panels, like I do( Amazon has some $20 dollar ones for small arrays liket I use), The controller will very the charging current as needed to charge the battery. So when you install the panels place them so you get the most Sun Light for the longest time in both summer and winter. The angle of the Sun on the panel can vary greatly if the panel is mounted in a fixed position. This is the easiest mounting method and the most common method. It is less expensive and low maintenance as there are no motors or moving parts. Figure about a 20-23 degree angle of the panel to the Sun as the earth is tilted about that much. This change through the year, but is a good rough guide to start. You may want to do something different at your location. I use two of them and charge two 146 amp hour deep cycle batteries and my panels are not tilted as I live in an apartment and cant mount them like I would like to do. On Sunny days the two panels can take two to four days to fully charge the TWO Batteries depending how much I use the during any given day. But remember my Installation the panels are in a sheltered place and NOT Tilted. So I think if the two panels were mounted like they need to be( As I suggested above) they would work better. Hope this helps. As you can tell it is not a fixed answer as there are many thing that govern the output of the solar panel(s).
Question: Will this work with an agm battery
Answer: hello, 47.6(Length) x 21.3(Width) x 1.2(Height) inch is the size for unpacked panel, and 55(L) x 23.3(W) x 1.4(H) inch is packing size. Hope it will solve your problem. Thank you.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this 400w 40a system be safely plugged into an rv solar ready 10a outside connection
Answer: The "40 amps" is just the maximum that the controller can provide to the batteries. With this kit, you'll never get close to that number, even if you wired all four panels in parallel (which I wouldn't do). If you wire all four panels in series, as you should do, then a 10-amp connection will be fine.
Question: Is it ok to hook up the solar panels to my batteries and charge them at the same my time my rv is charging them
Answer: Yes, the Renogy 400 Watt Kit can charge the batteries by the included Renogy Charge Controller and at the same time the RV can charge the batteries with the Renogy DC to DC charge controller when there is no sun light on the panels.
Question: Can this power an ac and refrigerator on a class a motorhome
Answer: It would depend on your battery bank and inverter. Not so much the solar kit. How large of a ac and fridge and how often will they be ran? For me I run my fridge on propane. I try not to run the ac to much. For some basic info, I have 4 12v 100 ah agm in parallel. This gives me 800 ah. I run a couple of essentials 24/7. They do not exceed 1.8 amps. Ever. By batteries charge Fully off this system almost daily. They battery bank never never drops below 12.4 volts. I can run a 1500 watt fridge or ac about 5.5 hours. I’d you know the wattage of your appliances apply the following: Usage Hours = AH/(wattage/0.85/volts)
Question: What other equipment will I need to add more solar panels and what is the max wattage for this charge controller
Answer: this is a great start solar package. this is what i had. Rover 40Amp will allow approx. 6-7 100 watt solar panel. Each 100 watt solar panel at max will produce around 5 amps. So 6x5=30 amps; 7x5=35 amps, so these numbers of solar panels will NOT exceed or damage the Rover 40A (amp) MPPT solar charger. if you plan on expanding your solar array, buy more brackets and wiring (especially if you are doing parallel wiring) and more quality batteries (rec AGM or Lithium ion); buy Will Prose IV book on amazon! great resource.

User questions & answers

Question: My house battery is too hard to get to for alligator clips. What would I need to hard wire this system to my battery
Answer: I got this extension cable: https://www.amazon.com/Go-Power-GP-PSK-X30-Expansion-Accessory/dp/B00FYV4DU8 And I got this accessory: https://www.amazon.com/Go-Power-Trailer-Accessory-Portable/dp/B00FYUCQXK, to which I added the appropriate quick-connector. The 30’ cable coils up inside the back of one panel when folded, I keep the 7-way hookup accessory in a little bag with other accessories. I simply set up the panel somewhere within 30’ of the front of my trailer and plug it into the 7-way coming from the trailer. Works like a dream to keep my LiFePO4 battery charged up, even on less than perfectly sunny days! No need to alligator-clip it to battery under the couch in my trailer. I did get a charge controller from Zamp Solar, because Renogy’s did not support lithium batteries at the time.
Question: Can i add more pannesls
Answer: I assume you are asking if the included charge controller can manage additional panels? If you are looking to add panels in parallel (maintaining the nominal 12V output while increasing amperage), my answer would be, "not recommended." This controller is rated at 10 amps. At full 100 watt output, it is operating at around 7 amps, so there's not much additional capacity. If you plan to add panels, I would suggest ordering the kit without the controller, then add a higher capacity controller such as this 30 amp model...http://www.amazon.com/RENOGY%C2%AE-ViewStar-Negative-grounded-Controller/dp/B00LG0DAQO/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1428654662&sr=1-2&keywords=viewstar It will require some know-how and additional wiring to properly set up.
Question: Anybody know how long you can run the batter/power cable...? I'm thinking from the top of an RV to the ground +/- 12-15'. Thank you in advance
Answer: With 10AWG wire between your controller and battery, 30' of wire will give you 3% drop. Only 15' of wire could be used if you add a panel and have 200W of PV power. That's not the best practice though. Best would be to use an MPPT controller connected as close to the battery as possible. You would then be able to use 55' of 10 guage wire between the controller and panel, or 110' if you double your voltage by adding another 100 watt panel in series.
Question: What is a good extension cord to buy with this for more mobility from my RV
Answer: There is a lot of wrong and misleading info you're getting here... It primarily depends on your controller. If you have a garbage (PWM) controller, then 25' of 10AWG wire is your max. That puts you at 3% voltage drop. If you have an MPPT controller, you can go 55' with 10AWG wire. Now, here's the kicker, and the reason nobody should be buying these crappy PWM controllers; If you add another 100W panel in series to your MPPT controller, you can now use 110 feet of wire, and your voltage drop will still be 3% because you're doubling your voltage. If you add a panel to a PWM controller, you'll have to cut your wire length in half. DO NOT BUY PWM controllers!!!

How to properly set up a basic system

First, the battery should be hooked up to the charge controller. You could use our tray cable or any general stranded copper core wire to connect the two. Make sure that you lead the wire into the battery terminal of the charge controller and match the + and – to the battery + and -. Make sure to screw in the exposed wire tightly inside the controller terminal. Then screw on the battery rings to the battery.

Second, then connect your solar panel to your charge controller. We recommend that you connect the adapter kit to your panel first, then follow the + or – sign coming off of the leads of the panels and match it with the + and – sign on the charge controller. Be careful at this step, because if the panel is inserted incorrectly, you can have reverse polarity and short the system causing damage to the panels or controllers.

Lastly, you can hook up your inverter to your battery by using battery ring cables and by matching the + to + and – to -.

User questions & answers

Question: If I only want to use one deep cell battery, what Ah would you recommend? For a gable fan and lighting
Answer: It should with no problem. It comes with all of the mounting hardware, so as long as you have about 2'x4' of roof space, as most class C's do, you shouldn't have a problem.
Question: What shipping method/company do you use for this kit
Answer: Thank you for the question! The max output on the load terminal will be 10a. Thank you, M.S.
Question: Does this kit have an upgrade for an mppt controller
Answer: As others have said, you would need an appropriate sized battery based on the wattage of the light set. You don't say what type of lights you are running other than that they are LED. I run a set of LED lights along the top of my van (set of 50 feet, holiday lights). The string is made with a DC plug. So I do not need an inverter. Plugs into the DC female connector on my solar set up. If your lights have an AC plug, you will need the inverter.
Question: Does the charge controller have different charge profiles for different battery types
Answer: It does not curve. It has an aluminum frame. I mounted mine to the roof rack of my econoline...very very sturdy but no curve

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use the charge controller in this kitt for 800 watts
Answer: Hi, thanks for your question. The LED light can be last about 8-10 hours after fully charged. There's a on/off button on the switch box and you can choose to turn it ON or OFF manually.
Question: What are the dimensions of your 100 watt panel
Answer: I think it would work for anything - it’s basically just a strip of LED’s with a solar powered source attached to it. We put ours on a regular basketball hoop however, and it broke in the middle of the strip. The company exchanged it for a new one though.
Question: Would you recommend this set for full time rv living
Answer: I just received this product and see that there is no sensor box in the package. The seller answers this question and states that there is not a sensor light and it does not come with a senor box, but the product clearly states that it has a sensor box. I am posting below the exact verbage included in the package I received. In 5 different places it mentions the sensor box. In the description, the features and in installation instructions. the description of the product says "LED Basket Hoop Solar Light Basketball Hoop Sensor-Activated LED Solar Strip LIght. Sensor Activated means that a sensor should be incuded with this product. In the Manual it says Features 1. LED Basketball Hoop LIghts-It lights up the rim of your basketball hoop every time you score, with up to one hundred unique light patterns. 2. Glowin-the-Dark Basketball Rim - This is the world's very first sensor activated LED strip designed to attached to any basketball hoop. 4. Unique Basketball Entertainment Product - It accurately provides exciting and vibrant instant-feedback to players when they score a basket. 5. Velcro the sensor box underneathe the rim (which will detect your baskets made) in the manual under "How to Install" it says to velcro the senor box underneath the rim If the sensor box is important to you, buy another product. I would not buy again from a seller who misrepresents their products.
Question: Could this be used for home use such as running fans and maybe a fridge during a hurricane or blackout? Also how easy is it install
Answer: The hook and loop is refering to the velcro included to secure the power box (battery panel)

User questions & answers

Question: Is this 100w panel mono or polycrystaline
Answer: Polycrystaline
Question: how do you attach a 4-8gauge wire from the controller to the battery. The connection screws look very small on the controller
Answer: Attach the wires before you mount the controller.
Question: Not mechanically inclined beyond reading good directions. i want a solar kit to run a small fan, or recharge phone or computer. what do i need
Answer: This is not the unit for you as you would need to add a battery and inverter to do what you want to. There are several smaller kits out there that include a small battery pack and inverter in one. Most of these kits produce 12V dc power and you are looking for 115V ac power for your devices, that is why you need the inverter unless you find a 12v fan and use a car charger for your phone. You would still have to add a battery to store the power. Good luck and Merry Christmas.
Question: Will this unit protect itself when the camper is hooked up to AC power? Will it also protect itself when the camper is plugged into a pickup
Answer: The solar system will be connected in parallel to the battery bank and whatever charger is also connected to the battery. If the shore power is charging the battery, there is no issue but if the shore power is powering the camper, a transfer switch should be installed
