12 best quietest portable generator
The quietest portable generators are designed to provide reliable power while minimizing noise levels. These generators are particularly popular for camping, outdoor events, and other situations where quiet operation is essential. Here are some key features and models known for their quietness in the market:
Inverter Generators: Inverter generators are known for their quiet operation. They use advanced technology to produce a consistent flow of electricity, resulting in less noise compared to traditional generators. Brands like Honda, Yamaha, and Champion produce some of the quietest inverter generators.
Decibel Ratings: When looking for a quiet portable generator, pay attention to the decibel (dB) rating. Lower dB ratings indicate quieter operation. Some of the quietest models produce noise levels in the 50-60 dB range, which is similar to the noise of a normal conversation.
Honda EU2200i: The Honda EU2200i is a highly regarded portable inverter generator known for its quiet operation. It produces around 48-57 dB of noise, making it suitable for various outdoor activities and sensitive environments.
Yamaha EF2000iSv2: Yamaha's EF2000iSv2 is another popular inverter generator known for its low noise levels, typically around 51-61 dB. It is compact and easy to transport, making it a great choice for camping and tailgating.
Champion 73536i: Champion also offers quiet inverter generators, such as the 73536i, which produces noise levels between 53-58 dB. It features a parallel capability, allowing you to connect two generators for increased power.
Noise-Reducing Enclosures: Some portable generators come with noise-reducing enclosures or soundproofing features to further minimize noise levels. These features can help maintain a peaceful environment when using the generator.
Eco-Throttle Technology: Many quiet generators are equipped with eco-throttle technology, which adjusts the engine speed to match the electrical load. This not only conserves fuel but also reduces noise when the generator is operating at a lower load.
When choosing the quietest portable generator for your needs, consider factors such as the power output, runtime, and additional features like multiple outlets and fuel efficiency.Reading user reviews and conducting thorough research can help you find the best option to suit your specific requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any generators comparable in price and amenities (quiet, light) that runs on propane |
Answer: | One commenter wrote “I then converted it to tri-fuel (gasoline/propane/natural gas) using a kit from US Carburetion (kit MSK3202).” Using the MSK3202 to switch from gas to propane could result in a large THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) since “One can typically expect to get around 10 – 15 % less power from a propane generator compared an equivalent gas generator.” chainsawjournal Or using the MSK3202 to switch from gas to propane could result in an unknown THD plus 10 – 15 % less power. |
Question: | Will this run out of the box? Does it include oil |
Answer: | No Oil! Comes with the funnel to fill the oil. Once oil and gasoline are added it fires right up. |
Question: | What are the true differences between this model and the 56200i which is more money, but seems to offer less features?? thanks |
Answer: | I have both, the 56200i is heaver and slightly larger, it also has a fuel gauge. The 56203i is noticeably quieter and puts out slightly more wattage. You won't be disappointed with either of them. |
Question: | Who makes the Engine |
Answer: | Its made in China, its a copy of the Yamaha 79cc engine. Very reliable if you take care to service it properly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long will a tank last when only using the 12 volt plug |
Answer: | The generator will run for about 3.6 hours at full 1600 watt load, the 12V output max output is 100 watts. Probably over 24 hours. I don't think the load on the 12V plug would not make much difference from just letting it idle with not load. 100watts is about 1/8HP and it has a 2HP engine. |
Question: | Is this the proper oil? http://amzn.to/2l17UZs |
Answer: | I personally would use Shell Rotella. I burned up a couple of Built-rite 4 stroke weed eater motors on Mobil 1 within a year. I am now on year 5 on the 3rd one I bought with Rotellla oil. Run it in my 4 stroke motorized bicycle too. Still runs like new with 15,000 miles on it. I think some those synthetics have high heat problems when these air cooled motors are shrouded. Rotella had better specs, that's why I switched. |
Question: | Will this run an 8000btu window air conditioner (best I found online is the ac is around 7amps), a 19" tv, and a dvd player |
Answer: | I have the 1700/2000 watt Wen 56203i inverter generator and it runs my 5000 Btu window AC at my cabin just fine MOST of the time. The AC pulls 500-600 watts when running, but startup is quite a bit higher. When I'm running your standard Walmart box fan, 32inch LCD TV, a laptop charger and a few led lights at the same time, I've had the generator overload a few times when the AC has cycled off and then starts back up. That tells me that I'm right at it's surge capacity with the other devices running. In 200+ generator hours of running the AC last summer and early fall, this happened 4-5 times. It just required shutting off the ac and fan, and pushing the reset on the gen, then turning them on one at a time. It seems like most of these comments are based on: A) starting watts from a generator sizing worksheet (where the answer is "no"), or B) from a calculation using only "running watts" and ignoring startup, where the answer is "yes". I'd lean towards an answer from someone who's tried it with the setup you want. As I mentioned, my 1700 running/2000surge inverter works for my 5000btu fine MOST of the time. It's a new AC and moderately efficient, but imagine older ACs will have a higher starting watts, and would kick off mine more frequently if it could start the AC at all. |
Question: | Is this quiet enough to keep me from getting kicked out of a campground that prohibits generators (due to noise |
Answer: | This thing is far too loud for any campground. I also have a Honda 2000. If they are running side-by-side, the only thing you can here running is the Wen, you can't even tell the Honda is running at all. If you want to camp at a CG that says, "No generators", you may find yourself kicked out if you run ANY generator. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this generator be hooked up to a larger (100+ gallon) propane tank, with some type of adapter |
Answer: | You need a POL to QCC1 adapter like this or similar. ( SHINESTAR Propane Tank Gauge and Hoses https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M0ILKIJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_dmVNBbFV8KWDT) Just bought one of these generators for my in laws and a new 100# tank right before hurricane Florence. |
Question: | Can I run a fridge and a freezer |
Answer: | Definitely. I ran my furnace, fridge, heater for the fish tank, a bunch of lights and phone chargers. Just remember to start the generator first, let it warm up some, pull one thing it at a time and you'll be fine. |
Question: | What is the decibel noise rating |
Answer: | Remember folks that this is a air cooled engine which are notoriously noisy engines by design. The engine does have a large muffler which helps a lot with exhaust noise but this generator has a open cabinet and doesn’t have an enclosed cabinet so all the machinery noise from the engine and generator goes everywhere. Noise is relative to different people. If a rattling noise is what bothers you but low sounds don’t bother you, you might consider a more expensive model that is enclosed. If rattles don’t bother you but low sounds do, then this is a good product for you. Personaly I knew what I was buying. An open generator that is going to make some sort of racket so I made a very nice enclosure and mine produces 65db at 5 feet. All generators of this price that are air cooled and not enclosed make a lot of noise. It’s more of a matter of what you or your neighbors can tolerate. |
Question: | if battery goes dead can it be started manually |
Answer: | yes, but only if using propane as a fuel source. if using gasoline then the recoil start won't work without a charged battery attached. I have tried it, and Champion customer service confirmed this. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long can i keep the generator running continuously? (westinghouse wgen |
Answer: | If you are referring to "continuous duty cycle" which means runs 24/7? No, this is not rated for that, Continuous duty generators cost $15K and up, run on diesel fuel or natural gas, engine operates at 1800 RPM, (4 pole generator). basically out of most peoples price range, and unless you have natural gas to the residence? |
Question: | Why oh why can't this be shipped to alaska? we're the ones that need generators |
Answer: | You're too close to Russia. We don't want them falling into the wrong hands. 😂 |
Question: | Is the 50 amp 120/240V 14–50r transfer switch capable or can you only use the 30r? It says 50 amp transfer switch ready on the brochure |
Answer: | The 240 volt outlet plug on the generator is a 30 amp style; not 50 amp. Most economical and safe whole home installation is a sliding plate on distribution panel, 30 amp “back feed” breaker, outdoor 30 amp plung-in box, 10 gauge wire (in conduit if exposed and susceptible to damage), 25 ft 240 volt generator connector cable, all for about $200 for DIY’s. DO NOT DEPEND ON ALWAYS REMEMBERING TO TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKER!!!!! |
Question: | Prende aires acondicionados?

User questions & answers
Question: | would like to adapt to another gererator. can someone tell me the actual axel length/wheel base measurment |
Answer: | axel length is 19 inches long, wheel base is 8 inches wide. |
Question: | Ran gen and turned off petcock till unit died. Why is gas still getting into carb/air cleaner assembly |
Answer: | It seems that if you overfill the fuel tank, the gas makes it's way into the vent and and then drains thru the hose back into the air cleaner assembly. Not the greatest design, but I drained some fuel from the tank and now the problem is solved.. Thanks for you input anyhow. |
Question: | can you plug a power strip into the outlet and run lamps, refrigerator and sump pump all at the same time |
Answer: | Yes - as long as the wattage doesn't exceed the rated capacity. We've used ours to run two refrigerators, two fans and our water well without any issues. |
Question: | Can somone explain the difference between surge watts and running watts |
Answer: | Think of the running watts as the generator stabilizing its power output & staying level. When you plug another item into it that means it has to do more or output more power for a few seconds it amps up to compensate for the new item plugged in. A quick surge in watts happens & eventually levels out back to the running watts. If it happens to go over the max surge watts too far it'll shut off. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I run my AC |
Answer: | Air conditioners require a certain amount of power (watts, which equals voltage [120 for plug-in, 240 for most central units] multiplied times current draw in amperes ["amps"]. and that's the running power it needs. But when it starts up, for a brief time is pulls more power to start, and for air conditioners the starting power required is more than for a lighter, easier spinning load like a window fan, so you need to identify the starting power draw. Generator ratings show a running power level and a starting power, compare to ensure you get a sufficiently powerful generator, and include all other loads that will connect to it (lighting, refrigerator, etc.), even though they will be less than most air conditioners, it all adds up. |
Question: | is this rating "this inverter operates at 64 dBA from 23 feet" at peak draw, or idle |
Answer: | The industry standard for measuring inverter output is 25% load. |
Question: | I know the product dimensions are listed but they don't specify which is height, length and width. Can anyone please help me with that? Thanks |
Answer: | I went out to measure and my approximate measurements are quite different than what's listed. I measured roughly 18inW x 20.5inL x 17.5inHWide I measured across top, front to backLength I measured across front from side to sideHeight I measured from ground to top, including height of gas cap. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What makes this a hybrid generator? Is it an inverter generator, or something else |
Answer: | We are using the term hybrid in the sense that we have taken a traditionally fully enclosed inverter style generator and put it on an open frame like a traditionally non-inverter style generator. This allows us to use a larger engine and increase output power while decreasing cost. The trade off is that this machine will be slightly louder than fully enclosed style inverters. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use the pull start because it looks like the metal panel is in the way according to the picture |
Answer: | The design is not optimal. The panel is in the way to pull the cord straight out. You pull it at a 90 degree angle, outward toward the handles. Mine starts pretty easily, usually one pull and it's not a hard pull. The cord housing is rounded, so the cord won't fray when pulled at 90 degrees. |
Question: | What is the noise level |
Answer: | To me, the noise seems low/reasonable. It has a large automotive style muffler (not a small lawn mower type). The generator mechanism itself also makes some noise, but not too loud. Actually, i thought this cheaper generator would be louder so I'm very pleased with the noise level. In fact, everything about this generator works well and seems to be high quality especially for the low price. I've not needed it for an actual outage yet, but I've run several tests through my transfer panel with various load levels for 15-20 mins at a time with perfect operation. |
Question: | What type of gas should be used? Or does it even matter |
Answer: | Alcohol free if possible. If not add a little Ethynol remover to the gas. Also if this has a fuel shutoff valve you should close the valve and let the engine use all the gas in the carburetor so it won't get all gummed up from the alcohol in the gas. I have a 6500 watt I have been using regularly since 2005 and keep it running great this way. |
Question: | Can someone confirm if this (gas only) unit has an automatic choke? I'm seeing no reference to a choke lever/switch on pics or video |
Answer: | Yes it’s a choke lever it’s hard to see , but it has sticker pointing it out , This generator is a beast had mine for 5 yrs just used it for first time 8/11/20 had gas in it & everything started up & ran like a champ , had 2 full size fridges , sump pump , injection pump & 65 gallon fish plugged up didn’t budge 👍🏾 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Since this is not listed as an inverter generator I am concerned about interference with computers and televisions. Is this safe to run these |
Answer: | I run my oxygen concentrator, fridge, fan, and tv and computer with no problem. |
Question: | If it doesn't have a pull start, how do you start it if it has been stored and the battery is dead? You can't "plug it in" to charge it. No power |
Answer: | You can jump start it from a car or jump box. |
Question: | How many hours does it run on a full tank |
Answer: | I was able to get 9 hours on a tank of fuel |
Question: | What is the thd for the champion 12,000-watt (model 100111?) also...can it be converted to propane |
Answer: | These generators will put out the standard THD rating of 15% or less unless otherwise noted. They will produce a sine wave, not a modified or square wave. This is perfectly acceptable for running common commodities found in your home such as TVs, computers, your appliances, etc. THD is a measure of the deviation of a sine wave from a "perfect" sine wave. All electricity, including line electricity, has measurable THD. If you have a specific item that requires less than 5% THD such as a UPS style battery back up, a pellet stove or high efficiency furnace control board, we recommend the use of a line conditioner for these items. This machine is designed to run on gasoline only. We cannot recommend or encourage the modification of the generator in this fashion as it will void your emissions warranty. We have been advised by environmental agencies that unless we have certified the emissions after conversion with them, we can no longer make the recommendation. The conversion company will have this responsibility. We are very sorry as we understand how common of a request this is. Unfortunately, ever changing environmental restrictions are being placed on manufacturers and our hands are tied. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If ran through either a 120v plug or a 30 amp adapter plug to 1 outlet in the house, is there a limit on how much you can power from one outlet |
Answer: | definately restricted by the particular wiring in your home to that outlet 15 or 20 amp MAX. Unless your an electircian and know what, when , how, and why, you should not even be thinking about doing this ,and if your were, you would already know what your limits are and if you can do it. SO NO, dont do it!!! |
Question: | How much oil shoud I put in it. I received the unit but no documentations on the first time oil fill up. Thanks to any and everyone |
Answer: | 20oz. This is in the supplied manual. Recommended oil is 10W30 for most climates. |
Question: | What is the decibel level of this generator? I can't find it listed. Thanks |
Answer: | 69-decibels. generatorfactoryoutlet-dot-com. About like your typical lawn mower. When you have no commercial electricity, it will be the sweetest sound ever. |
Question: | Is this big enough to power a small house in an outage of several days to a week (I know nothing about electricity and generators). Thanks |
Answer: | It cannot run your entire house. We typically run a full-size freezer, refrigerator, several lights, and our internet router. I have run this generator for up to 48 hours, but most of our outages are in the 8-12 hour duration. I run this unit 2-3 times per year. I run drop cords from the unit to my critical stuff. It starts easily, and runs 8+ hours on a tank of gas under our load. When the power goes out, it takes me about 10 minutes to roll it out, start it, and get everything plugged in. It has never let me down, would definitely purchase again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the dB rating on this unit |
Answer: | 50 dB at 1/2”. That is what the manufacturer is saying. Without a standard it is worthless information. I can claim mine is 47 dB but that measurement is at 30’ from the quietest side another claims 57dB but that is at 10’ Reporting the max reading from any side. Guess which one is quieter? Every generator is 0dB if you stand far enough away. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Most of Generac’s products—like the XC Series portable generators—are built right here in Wisconsin. However, the iQ3500 is manufactured to our specifications by a partner overseas. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Same as my DuroMax XP2000iS. These are all Yamaha clones. I paid $450 for mine. Same exact generator, just blue instead of orange. Also, the Pulsar PG2300iS at $429. |
Question: | Generac 30 A for RV |
Answer: | I have a Rockwood 233s travel trailer with a 15k air conditioning unit. This runs the whole unit, lights, fridge, water pump fans and AC no problem. |
