9 best lawn grass seed
Lawn grass seed is a crucial component for establishing and maintaining a healthy, lush lawn. It plays a significant role in the overall appearance and health of your lawn. Here's what you should know about lawn grass seed:
Grass Varieties: There are various types of grasses suitable for lawns, and the choice depends on factors like climate, soil type, and personal preferences. Common grass types for lawns include Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass, Bermuda grass, and Zoysia grass, among others.
Cool-Season vs. Warm-Season Grasses: Grasses are categorized as either cool-season or warm-season. Cool-season grasses thrive in cooler climates and are typically found in northern regions, while warm-season grasses are better suited for hot and humid climates, commonly found in the southern United States.
Seed Mixtures and Blends: Some lawn grass seed products are sold as mixtures or blends that combine different grass species. These mixtures aim to provide a balance of attributes such as color, texture, and durability.
Grass Seed Labels: When purchasing grass seed, you'll find labels that provide important information, including the grass species, percentage of each species in the blend, germination rate, and any additional coatings or treatments.
Germination Rate: The germination rate indicates the percentage of seeds that can be expected to sprout and grow into grass plants under ideal conditions. Higher germination rates are generally preferred.
Site Preparation: Before sowing grass seed, it's essential to prepare the planting site properly. This involves removing weeds, debris, and rocks, as well as leveling the soil and ensuring good soil-to-seed contact.
Sowing: Grass seed can be sown manually by broadcasting it evenly over the soil or using a seed spreader for larger areas. The recommended seeding rate varies depending on the grass species and intended use (e.g., overseeding an existing lawn or establishing a new one).
Watering: Adequate and consistent watering is crucial to promote germination and establishment of grass seedlings. New seedings may require frequent, light watering to keep the soil consistently moist.
Maintenance: Once grass seedlings have emerged, ongoing lawn care practices such as mowing, fertilizing, and pest control are necessary to maintain a healthy and attractive lawn.
Overseeding: Over time, lawns can become thin or develop bare spots due to factors like foot traffic or disease.Overseeding involves spreading grass seed over an existing lawn to thicken it and improve its overall health.
Seasonal Considerations: The timing of seeding is important. Cool-season grasses are typically seeded in the fall, while warm-season grasses are best seeded in the late spring or early summer.
Weed Control: Weeds can compete with grass seedlings for nutrients and space. It's important to address weed issues through pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control methods as needed.
In summary, selecting the right lawn grass seed and properly caring for your lawn during the establishment phase are essential steps in achieving a beautiful and healthy lawn. Understanding the specific requirements of your grass type and local climate is crucial for successful lawn care.

Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these phytosanitary certified |
Answer: | The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified. |
Question: | will it grow in shade in ok |
Answer: | No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate. |
Question: | Can I use it up north |
Answer: | Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer. |
Question: | How many square feet will this cover |
Answer: | A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this just 1 considering on TV or as seen on TV same 100 sq ft product is almost 1/2 this price |
Answer: | It's almost half the price until they charge you extra shipping. I purchased the double offer as on TV for $19.95 from the website. Many pages of "please buy more", and the web version of "but wait!", they added $7.95 shipping. "Because they care about the environment", we received what amounted to be the size of a quart Ziploc bag 3/4 full of seed. On the invoice, they informed us also that the double offer was in one bag. :/ |
Question: | what type of grass seed is this, rye, st. augustine, etc |
Answer: | Its a blended seed mixture including Perennial Rye, Kentucky Blue, Tall Fescue & Fine Fesuce seed |
Question: | Can I use my own seed |
Answer: | I think the reason this "sticks" to any surface is that the seeds are part of a "mousse" mixture. If you are adding your own seeds to the mixture, then you could, but if you want to reuse the device just to spread your own seeds, then I don't think they will stick to surfaces. This product did an ok job and grass did grow on some slopes where seeds wouldn't stick before, but the grass is not very "sturdy" and seems to not have deep roots. |
Question: | Is it the right time now to apply this product before snow falls or wait before spring time I need to know the effective results or outcome |
Answer: | Fall is always a good time to plant grass.....However, i would not purchase this product. It took 7 weeks for delivery. Mine came incomplete, and it comes with with very little grass seed. I got a credit from Amazon, but never heard from the vendor. I still have the product because I have never received a return label. I should have read the reviews on this product before I ordered it. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the same st augustine as grown in south Florida |
Answer: | The product listed is "Tall Fescue" which is a cool-season grass, not meant for south Florida. |
Question: | Grass seeds is not growing |
Answer: | Don't overwater, just mist it daily to keep the seeds moist. Also you should put a little soil over the seed or scratch them into the soil otherwise they wont grow if just laying on top of the soil. |
Question: | Will this grow in the fall |
Answer: | I am not sure but I am planning to toss some more out over the few bare batches I have remaining within the next couple of weeks. I don't know where you live so I guess it depends on the weather. I live in Clovis, CA and it is supposed to be 87 degrees today with the temperature in the next week or so being 89, 92, 85, 83, and then mid to upper 70's for a while. If you live in a similar area, you are probably safe to plant. I think with temps in the 70's and good watering, the grass should get off to a good start. As far as growing in the Fall, our lawn stayed green all Winter. We had very few freezes last year and none of the grass died. Good luck. |
Question: | Is this grass perennial and grows back yearly |
Answer: | If you're using perennial grass Stop! Also I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as perennial grass anyway. I mean who's gonna buy grass that dies every year and also disappears? |
