9 best heating plate for chicks

Heating plates for chicks are essential tools in poultry farming, providing a warm environment for newly hatched chicks. These plates are designed to mimic the natural warmth provided by a mother hen, creating a cozy and safe space for the chicks to thrive.

The heating plate typically consists of a flat surface with an integrated heating element. The height of the plate can be adjusted to accommodate the growing chicks. The chicks gather under the plate to regulate their body temperature and stay warm. Unlike traditional heat lamps, heating plates offer a more natural and energy-efficient way to keep chicks warm.

One advantage of heating plates is that they reduce the risk of fire associated with heat lamps. Additionally, they encourage healthier growth and development in chicks by allowing them to self-regulate their temperature. Chicks can move in and out from under the plate as needed, promoting natural behavior and reducing stress.

When setting up a brooding area for chicks, it's important to place the heating plate in a draft-free space and provide enough room for the chicks to move freely. Monitoring the temperature is crucial, and adjustments can be made by changing the height of the heating plate.

These heating plates are commonly used in backyard poultry setups as well as larger commercial poultry farms. They contribute to the overall well-being and successful raising of chicks, ensuring they have a comfortable and secure environment for their early days.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the plate underneath supposed to get so hot, that i cannot keep my fingers on it? Won't it burn the chickens? Is the plate I received broken
Answer: It’s not suppose to burn. It just suppose to be hot enough that it feels slighty uncomfortable for the hand because they can handle it. Mine was just warm. I think its fine that you cant keep your fingers on it, the heat has to travel through the feathers.
Question: Can you use in plastic totes
Answer: It doesnt get super hot, it mostly just warms underneath the plate. I can't see this melting plastic or setting anything on fire.
Question: What temperature is this? Or is the temperature adjustable? If so, what's the temp range
Answer: I used a Black & Decker thermal leak detector to measure the bottom plate surface after it had been on for an hour. The temperature was a little under 105ºF. The temperature is constant and not adjustable, but the height of the plate is adjustable. That effectively lets you change the temp underneath the plate due to more airflow.
Question: Is there a minimum temperature that the air must be for this to work? We are putting the chicks in our garage in March when the low is still cold
Answer: It needs to be warm enough for them to be able to get out from under the incubator and get to the feed and water without getting cold quickly. We estimate this is around 50 degrees. Another point is that we once accidentally left the door open to the chick room in our house and the temperature that night was 20 degrees. All 10 chicks were just fine in the morning even though the water 1 ft from their heater plate was frozen solid. The temperature can be down to 20 degrees around the brooder and the chicks will be fine but they probably won't be comfortable enough to get out from under the plate. User questions & answers

Question: What is the lowest temp the barn can go to and this still be effective
Answer: Yes it can work on 220v with the correct adapter
Question: Do you have it 220 v
Answer: I can't think of any reason why not.
Question: will this keep baby chicks warm inside of a small coop outside
Answer: Leave it plugged up over night in the brooder. I have mine (I have two brooders set up) elevated at one end so the chicks can find their own comfort zone. If the heater still is barely warm, it's possibly defective and might need to be returned. It won't get as hot as a heat lamp but it should be warmer than being able to put it right onto your face.
Question: Could this be made solar power compatible for off grid
Answer: 17" long x 12" wide x 9" high

Titan 30x30cm Brooder Hen

- The Titan Brooder Hen is ideal for rearing up to 25 poultry or waterfowl chicks at a time.

- By far the safest and easiest way to keep your newly hatched chicks warm.

- The flat design of the heating element maximises the area the heat reaches and our unique heat-diffuser plate emulates a mother hen, with the centre being the warmest area and cooling down towards the outside edges. This gives the chicks the freedom to move away from the strongest heat, while still staying warm.

- The Brooder Hen can also be used to provide underfloor heat for parrot-type birds by inverting the heating plate.

Setting up your Brooder Hen

1. Plug in your Brooder Hen and allow it to heat up (this may take approx. 30-60 mins as a result of our unique heating method for the heat-diffuser plate). Once warm the heat emitted by the plate will be consistent.

2. Set the brooder down on a flat surface and introduce the chicks to the plate

3. Ensure that the plate barely touches their feathers/fluff. Their natural instinct to keep warm will kick in and they will likely snuggle together.

4. Be sure to check on your chicks daily to ensure the height of the Brooder Hen is correct and adjust manually as needed.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on its side for older chicks that won’t go under it anymore
Answer: Yes probably but by the time that the can no longer fit under it, they probably don't need it...unless of course you are up north in the middle of the winter and the chicks are outside. Then probably I would just get them a coop with a heater.
Question: I have 16x16..can i put One chick under it? It would burn chick extremely hot. How high up should i set it for first time under
Answer: 1 chick is fine. They should be able to just get under it. If you see them stretching to get their backs closer to it, it is too high. Set the rear legs 1” shorter than the front. It will have no problem finding the perfect spot.
Question: New to this..can one baby chick that has hatched from incubator be successfully raised
Answer: Yes, this is an amazing heating plate. You,re chick will do better and develope quicker, It is a successful artificial mother.I highly recomend this product,
Question: how high for new born chick moving from incubator? to hot if touched would burn chick
Answer: Just watch what your chicks are doing under the warmer. If they are standing all the time, it is too high. If they immediately lay down and stay down all the time under there, it is too low. If they won't get under it at all, it is probably too low. It is okay if it touches their head when they walk in, but they should be able to walk around under there without it touching their body.

User questions & answers

Question: I have read in some reviews that a few customers recommend a thermostat to go with this product, but i dont see one available. can you recommend
Answer: It doesn’t turn off and on. You keeping low when the chicks are small and raise it up as they grow. If they are huddled under in and don’t leave then you room is too cold. They should come out eat drink then take naps under it and around it. They will need room to choose how close or far then need to be to keep warm.
Question: How many amps does it use
Answer: I’m not sure but before I purchased I read somewhere that it was like half of what heat lamp uses.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: Made in the USA--it is worth every single penny!! My only suggestion is get the largest one and the cone top to go with it! I loved them so much that I purchased 3 last year. You will rarely hear a peep out of the chicks.
Question: my chicks love their brooder. However, even at it's tallest, my turkey and goose chicks are too tall. Do you have longer legs available
Answer: No we do not

User questions & answers

Question: Whats the voltage range? Can it run on 220 volts
Answer: Regular outlet.
Question: were is it made
Answer: In the USA
Question: What's the temp supposed to be below it? Thermometer is reading a steady 84 degrees two inches from the surface
Answer: Not sure, but you want to keep it low enough to the ground that the chick’s back will touch it when seated underneath. You don’t want a lot of room between their back and the heat plate, as you’ll lose heat. They’ll cuddle together too, under it, so they’ll be fine. As they grow, you raise the plate along the four pillars to make it higher. It was routinely in the 50s in my house when I woke up last fall, and my chicks were all fine. This is a fabulous product, just make sure you get one rated for the number of chicks you’ll get. I had 16 chicks and used the 20 chick size. As a word of caution, they love to jump up on top, which is totally fine. I’d either cover the top with cling wrap or just deal with all the poop on top. I opted not to buy the pyramid shaped top so the chicks could jump on top and play. I’d 100% recommend this product.
Question: How tall are the posts
Answer: The posts are exactly 9" tall. The heating plate itself has 25 adjustable heights and can be adjusted to a max clearance height of 7"

User questions & answers

Question: I just brought my chicks home. How high should the heater be above them? Should they kind of crawl under it or be able to just walk under it
Answer: It should be as high as their backs. They will duck their heads to get under it. I love this plate rather than having the heat lamp. Enjoy your chicks.
Question: how does a heat plate work
Answer: Radiant heat projecting downwards. On mine the actual plate temp underneath was 125. But that's only on the surface. It doesn't warm the surrounding area much at all. First time user, chicks are 5 weeks old now and so far it's been terrific.
Question: How long is the power cord
Answer: Keep in mind that I measured with 29 chicks trying to stop me. My cord is 70 inches.
Question: Does this one come with the no roost cover? I’m looking at the 16x16inch
Answer: The one that is shown is WITH the no roost cover (which is a must to have). It says kit, so I suppose it includes the cover. It is an awesome heating plate too. You can adjust how far the heat is away from the chicks. You can move it up as the chicks grow. Also I suggest putting 2 legs lower so the babies can get warm with being able to move away to get less heat.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the best way to clean the brooder
Answer: This is not a brooder! It’s a heating plate for chicken to gather under to stay warm and you can adjust the height as they get larger. It’s safer than a heating lamp!
Question: Can this be used to hatch eggs under? It mimics a mother hen, so why wouldn’t it
Answer: We recommend always using a dedicated incubator for hatching eggs. Please reach out with any other questions and we'll be happy to help! Sincerely, The RentACoop Team
Question: Is there a temperature controller sold separately for this unit
Answer: The heating plate has an electric cord to turn the heat on. There is no temp control but you can tell when the heat is right. If the chicks move away from the heating plate, then they're too warm so you raise the plate up on the adjustable legs. If they huddle underneath and won't stop peeping, then it's not warm enough and you can move the plate down on the legs for more warmth. I raised one side higher than the other so they could decide where they wanted to go. This plate is a good size and I didn't worry about it falling into the pine shavings and catching on fire like a heat lamp. Bonus is there isn't an annoying red heat lamp light at all hours.
Question: How many quail per chick rating
Answer: It adjusts by height, but you could probably fit 30 or more quail in the space.
Question: Can i use this in a 110 outlet
Answer: If you had it shipped to a US address they attach a 110 v cord to it automatically.
Question: Can this be used in a cold garage and still keep chicks warm enough
Answer: I used this in my garage, with temps still dropping into the high 30’s to upper 50’s at night. I had 11 standard size chicks using it with ample space remaining and they would snuggle together, or move to the edges. I had a brooder pen at first (the red one), with a giant piece of cardboard on the floor. I put paper towels over the cardboard, and then hay on top of the paper towels. The set up was great. I later went to a big bunny pen with a top when they started flying. They eventually stopped going under the brooder plate and I removed it. All eleven are still happy and healthy. I have used an infrared heat lamp and it was MUCH harder to get the temperature balanced in the brooder. I highly recommend this.
Question: Is premier 1 now affiliated with rent a coop
Answer: I have no idea Call customer service
Question: What is the lowest outdoor temp this heating plate could be used? I'm looking to warm adult quail in outdoor cage with wood sleeping box
Answer: The bottom side of the heating plate reaches approximately 125 degrees. However, we are unable to say what the lowest outdoor temp could be for its use because of the different environmental possibilities such as amount of wind exposure, size of enclosure, etc.

User questions & answers

Question: My brooder is in the barn where it can get cold twenty degrees, will this product work there
Answer: Obviously, you need electricity for starters.. I guess how drafty it is could be an issue. If it wasn't drafty, I would say it would be successful if you set it up correctly. The plate is what gets warm, so they gather under and above it. The area surrounding the plate does not get particularly warm. I would say 20-30 chicks would be the most I would do per heating plate, if they were in a barn. I went from a heating lamp to this, and plan to do my next batch in the barn after using this. (We usually raise them inside our house when we start them out.) It does get very cold where I live.
Question: This looks exactly like the Premier1 heating plate - is it the same product
Answer: I don't think so. Premier1 website says there are counterfeit products for sale on Amazon. So at the very least, this may be a Premier1 product, but Premier1 does not authorize the sale or guarantee the quality of this product. That being said, I bought one a few weeks ago and I am happy with the purchase.
Question: Is this indoor/outdoor
Answer: I used this when we had chicks in a kid’s plastic swimming pool in our house. It worked great!
Question: Would this work as a heat source for baby chicks in an enclosed house that is outside in a pen
Answer: Yes that is how I use it

User questions & answers

Question: How tall is the chick brooder with anti-roost cover on
Answer: It's adjustable. I use mine up to the highest setting inside a large guinea pig cage .(That's what I use as a brooder.)
Question: If I put it in the coop, do I have to worry about fire
Answer: I bought this specifically because my home burned down due to a heating lamp so if your comparing it to something like that no I do not worry about this warmer and the babies love it. I also have 2 of the larger warmers because this small one is only for 15 or less no question.
Question: Can this be used inside a plastic tote
Answer: Yes, I have used this in a plastic tote, a guinea pig cage and also a pack n' play. You just have to make sure there is enough clearance between the heat plate and the bedding so the chicks can slip under easily.
Question: How long to take to warm up. Had it installed in 92 degree F garage and still hasn’t gotten above 93 degrees under the plate
Answer: I believe the plate only gets up to 93/94 degrees. You don’t want to burn the chicks.. Check the paperwork. The plate holds the temp at a consistent degree - temp does NOT go up & down. Are you using it for something other than a chicken brooder? Hope this helps.

Every RentACoop heater plate has 25 adjustable height settings. Adjust by as little as 1/4" !

Find the perfect height for your chicks to keep them at the perfect temperature and growing strong.

The No-Roost Cover + Comfort Feathers Are Available

This cover prevents your chicks from roosting on top of the heater plate, and we all know where chicks roost, chicks poop. This means no poop on top of your heater plate, which means no need to clean your heater plate. It's just one less chore you have to worry about thanks to the innovative Anti-roosting cone.

The 10"x10" RentACoop Heater Plate also has a "Comfort Feathers" option (Pictured left) .

These feathers completely change the demeanor of your chicks. Try your heater plate with and without the feathers and you'll see a huge difference in the temperament of your babies.
