10 best digital scanners
Digital scanners are electronic devices designed to convert physical documents, photographs, slides, negatives, and other printed materials into digital images or files. They are widely used in both professional and personal settings for various purposes, including document archiving, image preservation, and sharing. Here are some key aspects of digital scanners, with a focus on slide and negative scanners:
Types of Scanners:
Flatbed Scanners: These are versatile scanners commonly used for scanning documents and photographs. Some flatbed scanners come with transparency units that allow for scanning slides and negatives.
Slide and Negative Scanners: These scanners are specifically designed for converting slides and film negatives into digital images. They typically provide higher-resolution scans suitable for preserving and enhancing old photographic materials.
Resolution: Scanners are rated by their optical resolution, which is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Higher resolution scanners capture more detail in scanned images. For slides and negatives, a resolution of 2400 dpi or higher is often preferred for high-quality results.
Color Depth: Color depth, expressed in bits, determines the range of colors a scanner can capture. A higher bit depth (e.g., 48-bit) allows for more accurate color representation in scanned images.
Automatic Document Feeder (ADF): Some scanners, particularly flatbed models, come with an ADF for scanning multiple pages in a stack automatically. This feature is useful for digitizing multi-page documents.
Transparency Units: Slide and negative scanners have built-in transparency units with light sources to illuminate the slides or negatives during scanning. This ensures accurate and well-exposed scans.
Scan Speed: Scan speed varies among different scanner models. Faster scanners are more efficient for high-volume scanning tasks, while slower ones may provide higher image quality.
Software and Drivers: Scanners come with accompanying software that allows users to control scanning settings, adjust image quality, and save scanned files in various formats (e.g., JPEG, TIFF, PDF). Drivers are necessary for the scanner to communicate with the computer.
Connectivity: Scanners typically connect to computers via USB, but some models offer wireless connectivity options for added convenience.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Many scanners come with OCR software that can convert scanned text into editable and searchable digital text, making them valuable for document digitization.
Calibration: Periodic calibration may be required to maintain accurate and consistent scan results, especially for professional use.
Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of the scanner's glass and other components are essential to ensure the quality of scans.
Compatibility: Scanners should be compatible with the operating system of the user's computer, and drivers and software should be available for that platform.
Digital scanners, including slide and negative scanners, are valuable tools for preserving memories, digitizing important documents, and enhancing image quality. When choosing a scanner, it's important to consider factors like resolution, color depth, and features to meet your specific scanning needs.

The WS1040 is a handheld digital trunking scanner with Motorola P25 Phase I capabilities. The WS1040 features Object Oriented programming which has often been regarded by users as easy to program and use. Virtual Scanner mode stores 21 various scanner configurations for a total storage capacity of over 38,000 scannable objects. Just as their lower end brother models, this offers a dedicated Skywarn button and Spectrum Sweeper - Quickly sweeps the scanner’s frequency ranges for transmissions from nearby sources. Lock out found frequencies and continue searching in the same band. Free-Form Memory Organization - Allocation of memory dynamically and efficiently as it is needed. This differs from low cost and older scanners that had memory organized in rigid and wasteful memory banks
- Menu Driven Programming with Context Sensitive Help - Each menu item provides a few lines of help text that provide assistance with programming and using the scanner
- Scan List-functionality allows you to arrange, group and scan objects according to your preference;Lock-out Function
- Skywarn Storm Spotter Functionality - Instant access to frequencies used by storm spotter networks
- Digital AGC - Instantly compensates for low user audio levels that are common on digital systems

Question: | Is this model preprogamed |
Answer: | This uniden BCD996P2 Digital scanner is not preprogrammed, you have to program it your self, Note: it takes a little while to program ,but it can be done, I would recommend theses scanners that are already preprogrammed simply by entering your zip code and they are the Whistler WS1095 digital scanner - Uniden Home Patrol 2 scanner and the Uniden BCD 536HP. I live in Raynham,Bristol, Massachusetts and why do I get , in my car a frequency of a city over 20 miles . I want to set the GPS only to 5 miles. You have to pressure Paul from Uniden to update the Bios that you may see in looking for Bios for the 996P2 |

User questions & answers
Question: | If I order this now, will I receive a new unit that does not have the bug where it has to be returned to Uniden to fix |
Answer: | *IF* the seller returned his stock as they were instructed to, all current stock should be fixed. Only the seller would know that. You would have to contact them directly before purchase. I would *think* all the old stock with the bug has been sold by now, as everyone was sold out for a few weeks during the recall. Id think its safe now. Even if you got the old version, Uniden will swap it with a new unit, and give you a 3 year extended warranty for your trouble. Not to shabby. Since I see the seller answered already, just disregard my comments and grab one! |
Question: | can you power this unit from the usb cable in the car |
Answer: | The Unit cannot be powered from the USB cable the scanner comes with a cigarette lighter adapter and hardwire cable to connect to a car battery. You can use either one of those cables to power the unit but the USB cable is for data transfer only for this scanner. |
Question: | i had read that all you have to do is put your zip code in and your good to go is that true or not |
Answer: | Yes that is true but I also use program ARC536PRO to help me monitor what I receive. This receiver is great. The Zip code is all you need to get started. I learned a lot from YouTube video's. Have fun :-) |
Question: | Has Uniden fixed the WiFi dongle or Add the siren app yet? It has been a year since this thing came to market and still no updates |
Answer: | I purchased the BCD536HP scanner and the BC-GPSK antenna. From my view point this is nothing but a big fat lie from Dan M.This App was a MAJOR selling point of this unit; the scanner even comes with the Wi-Fi dongle; the package even shows the Wi-Fi dongle on it!It's been over a year? REALLY?!? .....REALLY?!?!I would recommend no one buy ANYTHING from Uniden until they keep their promise on the MOST expensive scanner system they have ever sold. I know I'm over $600 into it and it still isn't complete. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |

Answer: | You can download your slides on a SD card and then view and save on your computer. If there was another way to view on the computer we did not find it! However, if you are serious about saving slides to your computer or have a great many of them, I would recommend a more advanced slide viewer with better options. This device works but is laborious to some extent especially if your your slides are old or worn. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work |
Answer: | U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner |
Question: | Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer |
Answer: | Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way |
Question: | Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to |
Answer: | There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well. |
Question: | The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct |
Answer: | I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in! |
