14 best convert cassette tapes to mp3s
Converting cassette tapes to MP3s is a process that involves transferring the audio content from analog cassette tapes to digital MP3 format. This conversion can be achieved using various methods and equipment. Here's what you need to know:
Equipment Needed:
- Cassette Player: You'll need a cassette player or cassette deck to play the tapes. This can be a standalone cassette player or a component of a stereo system.
- Computer: A computer with audio input capabilities (usually a microphone or line-in port) is necessary for recording and saving the audio in MP3 format.
- Cassette-to-USB Converter: To simplify the process, you can use a cassette-to-USB converter device. These devices connect to your cassette player and your computer via USB and often come with software for recording and encoding audio.
Software:
- You'll need audio recording and encoding software on your computer to capture the audio from the cassette player and save it as MP3 files. Popular software options include Audacity (free and open-source), Adobe Audition, or various commercial audio recording applications.
Process:
- Connect the cassette player to your computer using the cassette-to-USB converter or by connecting the audio output of the cassette player to the computer's audio input.
- Install and configure the audio recording software to record from the appropriate input source (usually the line-in or microphone input).
- Start playing the cassette tape and simultaneously start the recording software to capture the audio.
- Monitor the recording to ensure the levels are set correctly and there is no distortion.
- When the cassette has finished playing, stop the recording and save the audio in MP3 format.
- Edit the recorded MP3 files if needed, such as removing gaps or enhancing audio quality.
- Organize and store the MP3 files on your computer or transfer them to a portable media player or digital library.
Quality Considerations:
- The quality of the final MP3 files depends on the condition of the cassette tapes, the playback equipment, and the recording settings. Cleaning old tapes and using a high-quality cassette player can help improve the results.
- You can choose the MP3 encoding settings (bitrate) based on your preferences for file size and audio quality. Higher bitrates result in better audio quality but larger file sizes.
Backup and Preservation:
- After converting cassette tapes to MP3s, it's advisable to keep a backup of the digital files to prevent loss or deterioration of the original analog tapes.
Converting cassette tapes to MP3s is a practical way to preserve and digitize your audio cassette collection. It allows you to enjoy your old music or recordings on modern digital devices and ensures that the audio content is preserved for future generations.

User questions & answers
Question: | Once you download mp3 to your computer, can you then burn a CD to use in your car |
Answer: | Yes. Depending on the software you use,.... It comes with Audacity and you can also download Audacity online. I already had it so.... Using Audacity to record, it saves as an Audacity file. Again, using Audacity, you can then convert to wav, mp3, or other formats. It does not automatically record to mp3, it records as a digital file, not mp3. So to answer your question, once recorded as a digital file, you can convert to mp3, yes. |
Question: | is it compatible with windows |
Answer: | Audacity is awesome software. I use it on Windows 10 all day. Make sure you get the latest version. It is free, btw. |
Question: | how can I download the software |
Answer: | There is apparently not a special software for this device. If you have Audacity or GarageBand on your computer (or download Audacity using the included disc/suggested link) you should be able to plug in this device and record your own MP3's from it. |
Question: | Will this also just play cassettes |
Answer: | Ok-just read the answer from a question in 2016! --YES it can! |

How To Convert Your Old Cassette Tapes?
Connect the recorder to your laptop using the USB cable. And plug in the headphone so that you don't have to hear 2 volumes: one from the tape and the other from the laptop. All audio sounds goes from the recorder directly to the laptop if (for the microphone option), you use the USB option. Therefore, if you make a lot of noise at your desk, none of the sounds will be capture in the WAV file. By controlling the volume on the recorder, you directly influence the loudness of the recording.
While you are recording, don’t put anything electronic near the player (cell phone, tv remote, game controller, etc) or it will make a buzzing noise on your recording and you will have to start over.
How to have the best sound quality?
- use an outside wall charger (not included) or 2 AA batteries to power the cassette player while recording. Be sure to keep it away from your computer monitor or other electronics while you are using it. If it's turned a certain way near a monitor, noise will come through on your transfer. By moving 4-5 ft away from PC area the issue cleared completely.
- Depending on the age and quality of your cassette tape, you may hear background air or something that sounds like a hum. The reason is the actual "tape" is magnetic and looses it's strength over time. This does not mean the cassette player is faulty. But, with Audacity you can remove background noise and that's a major plus.
- Use the option in Audacity to monitor audio as it's playing, and experiment with volume setting. If you set the volume on max on the player, it will introduce more noise. Lower it until the loudest sound only reaches about 75% in the wavelength window. That's a good audio setting for mastering in a studio, and the same applies here
- Cassette player runs on battery or USB power.
- Converting tapes to digital files – converting them to MP3 format via a USB cable is a new innovation that can digitize these old tapes. It can also be used in the CD burner of a notebook computer.
- Supports 3.5mm AUX jack – works perfectly with any standard 3.5mm AUX jack, which means you can play and stream music anywhere.
- CLEAR SOUND QUALITY – By transferring your cassettes to MP3s in a quiet room, you can enjoy crystal clear sound quality with even the oldest bands.

Do you have valued records and tapes that you would like to preserve? Converting them to CDs is easy and inexpensive- if you know how!
We have a solution. Director Alan Jeffries has created a video, based on our excellent online tutorial on converting tapes and records into CDs, that gives full details and step by step instructions. It covers connections, proper recording, editing, removing pops and clicks, burning the final CD, and even adds sections on using the XP201 preamp and Maya EX.You can use the same techniques with any software and hardware that has equivalent capabilities.
From the Contributor
Director Alan Jeffries found making this video to be particularly satisfying. "Many people are intimidated by the process- recording, editing, burning a CD", he said. "It was both challenging and rewarding finding clear ways to express all this information in a 22 minute video presentation. This video is going to enable people to preserve precious, irreplaceable tapes and records that would otherwise never be used."

User questions & answers
Question: | I need just a simple playing cassette player we are teaching our grandson hooked on phonics |
Answer: | I would buy a normal cassette player rather than this one. There are several inexpensive ones that have a built in speaker or headphone plug. I would only get this one if you are trying to convert your cassette tapes to mp3 files. |
Question: | how can i get my tape to mp3 converter to work |
Answer: | Don't use the CassetteMare software. It doesn't work. Use the Audacity software that's also provided on the CD in the package, then follow the instructions provided with the Audacity software, not the Audacity instructions in the manual provided in the package. That manual is useless. With a little effort, you can convert tapes to mp3s using Audacity. |
Question: | Is this product MAC compatible |
Answer: | The cassette player itself is MAC compatible. The software that comes with it is not. You will need to use a free program called Audacity to use the cassette recorder with your MAC. After you import using Audacity, you can then either keep using Audacity, or you can use various MAC audio tools to edit the .mp3. |
Question: | I assume after casette tape is transferred I can burn CD |
Answer: | You can transfer only one song at a time. Then you can burn a CD with as many transferred songs as your CD can hold. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it comfortable |
Answer: | It depends. It isn’t designed to plug into all holes on the human body. |
Question: | Does this product work with Mac OS X Version |
Answer: | I don't know. Only used it with OSX 10.7.5 |
Question: | Does it work with Yosemite |
Answer: | I just bought this yesterday. I am running the latest OS X Yosemite 10.11.2 and it works *but only if you plug in the device to the USB port AFTER launching the application*. If the device is already plugged in then it does not record any sound. |
Question: | Compatible with OS X Yosemite |
Answer: | The mixed answers here might be because of the following behavior: You have to plug the device into the usb port *AFTER* launching the application. If the device is already plugged in then it does not record any sound. However if you plug in the device after the app is running and asking you to plug it in it does record sound and works just fine. I am running OS X Yosemite 10.11.2. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this record family talking on cassette |
Answer: | This rug pad works great for me. I have it under a fairly thick wool area rug in our living room. It is thin and I think it would work fine on the lower pile rug. We spend a lot of time on the floor and I find it comfortable and it doesn't slip at all, unlike our last pad. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will this do any length tapes? 60 min 90 min 100 min |
Answer: | Yes, it could. May i suggest some velcro tape on the bottom of the door stop and top of the door itself. I bet that holds it in place. This door stop comes with sewn in strap, but it only holds the inside corner in place when used on the bottom. |
Question: | Does it rewind cassettes |
Answer: | Yes, it can be trimmed to fit the door. |
Question: | Does it use regular size cassettes |
Answer: | Never |

Question: | Is there any way to tell if it is recording? i have tried fat32 usbs (as cust svc indicated) and an sd card-nothing. i don't know if it is recording |
Answer: | I wondered the same thing. I haven't used it lately, but I remember a blinking icon when it was recording. I'll set mine up and look again. |
Question: | does this convert cassette to mp3 files |
Answer: | Hi, it could convert cassette tape to mp3 file. |
Question: | can you record from the tape |
Answer: | Yes, you can play your favorite cassettes and record them to a USB/FlashDrive. Note, if you want to have separate tracks, you will need to press record before and after each song; otherwise you will just have 1 long track that includes all songs on one side of the tape. Hopefully that answers your question! You can do the same to record to flashdrive from the radio or vinyl record. I have not tried recording from bluetooth or AUX to a flashdrive, but I imagine the process would be about the same. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug |
Answer: | While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine. |
Question: | Can this scan 120 film |
Answer: | With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer. |
Question: | Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement |
Answer: | I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative. |
Question: | Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card |
Answer: | Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product. |
