12 best 35mm negatives scanners

A 35mm negatives scanner is a type of scanning device designed specifically for digitizing 35mm film negatives and slides. These scanners are commonly used in the field of photography and are related to office electronics and office products. Here's what you should know about them:

  1. Purpose: 35mm negative scanners are designed to convert traditional 35mm film negatives and slides into digital formats. This allows you to preserve and share your old film-based photos in a more convenient and modern digital form.

  2. Types: There are various types of 35mm film scanners available, including flatbed scanners with specialized film scanning attachments, dedicated film scanners, and even some film scanner attachments for DSLR cameras.

  3. Resolution: The quality of the scanned images largely depends on the scanner's resolution.Look for scanners with high optical resolution, typically measured in DPI (dots per inch), for sharper and more detailed digitized images.

  4. Color Depth: The color depth determines the range of colors the scanner can capture. Higher color depth (e.g., 48-bit) scanners can reproduce more accurate and vibrant colors.

  5. Film Compatibility: Make sure the scanner is compatible with 35mm film negatives and slides, as well as any other film formats you may want to digitize, such as 120mm or 110mm film.

  6. Scanning Speed: Scanning speed can vary between different models. Faster scanners are more efficient for digitizing a large number of film frames.

  7. Software: Many 35mm negative scanners come with dedicated software for image editing and color correction. This software can be helpful for enhancing and retouching scanned images.

  8. Connectivity: Check the scanner's connectivity options. Some scanners connect directly to a computer via USB, while others may have wireless capabilities or memory card slots for storing scanned images.

  9. Batch Scanning: Some models support batch scanning, allowing you to scan multiple film frames in a single operation, which can save time when digitizing large collections.

  10. Dust and Scratch Removal: Many scanners offer features for automatic dust and scratch removal to improve the quality of scanned images.

  11. Price Range: The cost of 35mm negative scanners can vary widely depending on their features and capabilities. Entry-level models are more affordable, while professional-grade scanners with advanced features tend to be more expensive.

  12. Brand and Reviews: Research different brands and read customer reviews to determine the reliability and performance of a specific 35mm negative scanner before making a purchase.

  13. Archiving and Sharing: Once your film negatives are digitized, you can easily archive and share them digitally with friends and family or use them for various creative projects.

35mm negative scanners are valuable tools for photographers, hobbyists, and anyone looking to preserve and digitize their film-based memories. When choosing a scanner, consider your specific needs, the quality of digitization you require, and your budget.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: My old Minolta 'spy' type camera took 8mm slides mounted on standard 35mm (2x2) mounts. Any problems I should anticipate other than smaller images
Answer: Right -- In addition, I had to have my computer tech make a house call because I couldn't make it happen though I was connected to the internet. Turned out, since I had been working with Windows 7 I had to upgrade to 10. This printer also turns out poor color quality compared to my old Canon.
Question: What is the internal memory of the magnasonic fs71 35mm film scanner? some product descriptions say 128mb, but a customer service rep said 64mb
Answer: Go to the actual Canon site and look or type in downloads/drivers you can then pick your model and it is a breeze from there, the info that actually came with the printer to go to a special download site was not working. At least not for me.
Question: Does it scan black and white film
Answer: No, the TR8620 does not have that feature. Other Canon printers do such as the PIXMA TS9020 which supports printing on multiple media types such as CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs.
Question: Does this model cover the full area of 35mm film/slide? Earlier scanners (by Kodak or Magnasonic) crop only about 90% or less on 35mm
Answer: I never owned a TS9520, however, I did a TS8520 and I find that my new TR8620 shoots out the copies at a more rapid rate than the slower rate of the TS8520. Know that different ink cartridges are used for the TR8620 which are not the same as those used in the TS8520.

User questions & answers

Question: I have tons of photos I want to digitally convert onto my computer.I'm using my hp printer's scanner, however it takes forever. Is this any faster
Answer: I used a HP scanner before and was not happy. This scanner works very quickly. The quality of the scans are excellent. I hope this helps. I just finished scanning over 30 yrs. worth of pictures.
Question: Can you use this scanner independently of a computer? Does it have a memory chip slot
Answer: There is no memory slot. There is one usb port on the back which connects to my computer. Try http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=139863 or Go to Epson.com, select scanners and follow the prompts (drivers and support / scanners/) , then Search for "V600". When the search responds , click Epson Perfection V600 and it will take you to the manuals. I hope you can get your answer there.
Question: How long does it take to scan 35mm negatives at maximum resolution
Answer: I'm using it right now, and it takes about 3-4min per 35mm frame at 2400 DPI with Digital ICE enabled. For 10 frames at this setting, it takes about 20 minutes. This does not include the time it takes to preview the images first, then customize the exposure settings for each one to maximize the output; that usually takes me an extra 5-15min. The scanner can only hold two 6-frame sections of 35mm film at a time. All told, it takes me about 1-2 hours to process and scan each roll of 35mm film with this scanner. If you just want quick images and don't want to adjust anything, it can scan 10 frames in about 8 minutes at 300DPI with full auto settings and no ICE.
Question: Will this scanner convert negatives to prints
Answer: It is part of a solution which can do that, but it will not do so on its own. You need a computer, a photo-grade printer (with appropriate photo paper in whatever sizes you want to print), of course ink for the printer... and software which runs on your computer to do the task. By default, when scanning negatives, the color is inverted on the scanner, while when doing slides, it is not. The scanned images are provided to your computer for further tweaking, and then saving and/or printing. You can do low-res images, suitable for on-screen display (usually 24-bit jpg files at screen resolution) or high-res, deep-color images (usually 48-bit tif files in the 4k x 3k resolution range), suitable for poster-size prints. What this won't do is do all the intermediate steps for you. Some work on your end will be required...

User questions & answers

Question: Do you install driver software first, then connect and power up scanner or other way around
Answer: I use the Godox Xpro-S. I love the Godox products.
Question: What is the best THIRD PARTY (not bundled SilverFast) scanning software to use, that uses the Infrared scanning feature for dust and scratch removal
Answer: Hello, yes it is Imaging Edge, you can download it for free from our website. It comes with three pieces of software, Remote to shoot tethered or wireless depending on your camera model. Edit, to develop your RAW images, combine pixel shift pictures and View to review and organize your pictures.
Question: Will it work with mac's new os, high sierra
Answer: Yup, really nice to not have 4K limitations time limitation. Wish it would be possible with the A7R III with firmware
Question: There are so many bad reviews for this product. What's a better alternative at this price range
Answer: a7R3 with MC-11 adapter for Canon lenses "hunts" a LOT and for me was not acceptable except to use on manual for macro work. Thus, I expect the adapters will not work for the R4 either. You would not want to buy this great camera and then use Canon lenses. Besides the functionality questions, from a business perspective, Canon and Nikon are getting so far behind Sony and are way undercapitalized compared to Sony, I see their problem getting worse and Sony continuing to rapidly gain market share. The value of my Canon lenses dropped dramatically in the time it took me to bite the bullet and sell all my Canon equipment.

All in all, with the top-version SilverFast software, it helps make a difference to the scanning results and ensures to archive the film in an optimal way.

Remark: The Expert Mode could be enabled by clicking on the small icon which is a doctor's hat as the button on each of the software features.

Powerful Color Management System

Accurate color is the basis for those who want to make sure the colors are exactly as they want because one image might look different when it is viewed in a light booth, viewed on different monitors, or even printed on different printers. The color difference leads to confusion and feelings. Therefore, color management is an important topic for those who are very serious about their photography and artworks. Color management is the process of controlling the way colors are represented across various devices.

OpticFilm 8200i Ai gives the best solution for calibrating the color and easy workflow. With the 35mm IT8 target and the auto IT8 calibration tool of SilverFast Ai Studio, color calibrates the film scanner in just two mouse click and 2 minutes. It can analyze the scanned file to characterize the specific color reading capabilities and compares the measuring table, which is built per under the ISO-Norm 12641, to a reference file associated with your color target. The difference between the two is mapped into and generates its unique color profile. The calibration and characterization of image devices help ensure that during the production process, an image is reproduced as accurately as possible.

iSRD - a highly reliable and comprehensive solution for infrared-based dust and scratch removal.

Slides and negatives always have small dust particles and tiny scratches on them, even when handled very carefully. Removing them one-by-one takes a tremendous amount of time, since often hundreds or thousands of small defects (dust grains or lint) are found on the original image, which only becomes visible after digitization. PlustekOpticFilm has a reliable solution to this problem.

The OpticFilm 8200i scanner has an infrared channel that finds all the the dust and scratches on the film surface. The infrared light has a very wide wave-length, which allows it to pass through film emulsion of negatives and slides without resistance, as opposed to scratches and dust particles that reflect it.

iSRD utilizes this behavior as follows (Automatic)

  • Step 1 : Use white light for regular RGB scan.
  • Step 2 : Use infrared scan that captures defects like dust and scratches only.
  • Step 3 : Maker the dust and scratch on image.
  • Step 4 : Calculative dust and scratch removal takes effect, only where the infrared channel has detected any defects without losing any important details.

In conclusion, OpticFilm 8200i Series can automatically remove the dust and scratches from the scanned image.

Dust and scratches are removed during the scanning process, eliminating the need for post-process removal.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i purchase the slide viewer on the $45 film slide scanner eparately? i have lost mine
Answer: Not sure. I went through the manual and found no reference to 127. I only used it for 35mm slide format which also included 126 film cut into a 35mm slide. I will try to convert some photos when I can get some. Could not have been more pleased with ease of operation or results.
Question: Is the software 64-bit? macs with catalina os will not run 32-bit programs. thanks
Answer: I don’t know I returned it as I wasn’t happy with it. Couldn’t get it to work properly.
Question: will this accept 2 5/8 size slides
Answer: Which/what mode?
Question: can I scan aps (Advantix) film cannisters
Answer: This might indicate a need to format your sd card. This can be done easily in a digital camera that accepts one. You need to find that function in the camera's menu. It can also be done in a computer. Google the procedure for your particular operating system.

User questions & answers

Question: Which button do I push to actually save the image
Answer: See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides).
Question: Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air
Answer: I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer.
Question: Does this work with 16mm reels
Answer: If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie.
Question: My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner
Answer: I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine.
Question: So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files
Answer: You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well.
Question: how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans
Answer: I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners.
Question: How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you
Answer: I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan.
Question: Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience
Answer: Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia

User questions & answers

Question: Did you try scanning negatives? I am wondering if it scans the full negative area? Or does it crop (cut off) part of the negative image
Answer: I don't use negative film, but from the look of the negative carrier, it will not do any cropping. The scanner scans the full 35mm area of a slide, so it should do the same for a negative.
Question: Is it compatible with Windows
Answer: i TRIED BUT IT WOULD NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS 10
Question: Does I do black and white negatives
Answer: Yup. You select the type of film you're going to scan on the unit. It does slides, black & white negatives, and color negatives. It comes with two slide in holders, one for slides and the other for negative strips. I scanned both color slides and color negatives and it worked great.
Question: Is 35mm the only negative size supported
Answer: The two film/slide holders provided with the scanner are for 35 mm.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone else have the same problem as I have with this device? It crops 35mm slide severely - the portrait I want has no upper third face
Answer: I believe you’re using the wrong size setting for film. I would try using a different size millimeter of film and see if that changes the amount of picture you get. Or you might be using the wrong insert when you put the slide in to the black plate
Question: How do you advance the film? The only way I could find was to pull on the other end, but then you miss the first frame
Answer: It’s a tedious process. I start by centering the first frame in the tray window, scanning it, then pushing the negative through until it appears on the other side. Then I pull it through for the rest of the strip. I recommend wearing powder-free nitrile gloves when working to avoid damaging the film with fingerprints...
Question: Does the device automatically feed the film for viewing
Answer: No, you must manually feed the film. Same for all of these scanners.
Question: how is the interface with macOS Big Sur v
Answer: never connected

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

If the negative was good and in focus, I believe you could make a 8 x 10 in without a problem.

I used Photoshop to clean up some minor issues, like dust I failed to get off of the negative. I was very pleased with the old family photo's. This isn't a commercial unit, which might cost $2,500-$4,000.

User questions & answers

Question: will this scan 126 and 110 film
Answer: No. Scans 35mm film only.
Question: Dose it scan full frame or cropped
Answer: It scans full frame.
Question: Can it scan 35mm panoramas
Answer: Yes, it can scan a few types of panoramas including Horizon 24x58, Widelux 24x59, and XPan 24x65. For Panramas, it scan scan a maximum of 3 frames per strip, which is about the same as 6 frames for normal 135.
Question: Will this scan an entire roll of uncut 35mm film at one time
Answer: No it won’t. The machine does it by 6 negatives per “slide”. Once the slide is done it’ll eject the film it scanned and on to the next one. You will have to cut the roll into strips of 6 for it to work the best, but strips of 4 will work well too. However the company advertises only being able to scan a batch of 10 strips, and I was able to reliably scan about 15 with no issues.
